      John Kay It will a money pit buy the time you buy one. Just remember only the motor drive units and battery pack is covered under the 8 year warranty. The rest of the car is only covered under the 4 year 50k miles warranty, which ever comes first. So if it's past 50k miles, will there goes your warranty coverage on very very expensive, brakes, Media Control Unit, Suspension, $4k 17 screen, $1,000 door handles, an all the Electronic gizmos prone to failure.

    BUYING THE CHEAPEST CARS has been Hoovie's claim to fame since day one. When he strays from that format, I think his videos suffer. I love his reviews and comments on the weird, unusual and cheapest cars he can find, and then spend his good money on them. He takes the risks and we get to vicariously enjoy his cars without it costing us a cent!

    Don't LS swap it. Put in an old school SBC with a blower through the hood, tub the rear wheels like a 72 Camaro, drag bars... maybe curb feelers. Turn it into everything the Tesla crowd hates.

    • @LitheApo

      Theres no transmission tunnel, a Lot of the car is aluminum, meaning its pretty hard to weld and fabricate, and the battery pack is part of the rigidity for the frame.
      Plus it would be slower...

      one of the things about the torque of electric motors: they are tamed/toned down otherwise they could actually twist the driveshafts they produce so much torque. There's videos of electric cars at the drag strip doing that constantly......
      I drove a VERY early model back in the 90's and it was in an exhibition hall with polished concrete floors. It spun the tires so easily it was almost undriveable.....

      There's a thought. I wonder how much weight you will save with the LS swap. I mean really! It's an aluminum engine, so the LS swap would make that car a lot lighter. I bet the lighter weight of the LS engine easily offset the torque/horsepower deficit(can't believe I just typed LS engine and power deficit in the same sentence). Plus you can boost the LS and really deliver the goods. 3-5 minutes at the gas pump and a 400 mile range, or 25-30 minute quick charge and a 200-250 range. I think we know which is the better option.

      Svein Hanssen lol those drive unit motors are notorious for failing on the model S after One Tesla owner going through 4 of them. 3 of them were covered under the warranty and 4th out of pocket. Each drive unit replacement was $6,000 bring the total cost of $24,000 worth motor replacements. Ouch! That's equivalent to 4 engine replacements in a single car. Thats considered a lemon straight from the factory.

    85kWh for 33k is ~39ct/Wh, that's pretty close to the market value of lithium batteries alone.
    So it is a good deal, because you get a huge pile of expensive Tesla spare parts for free on top of the batteries.

      And battery is ~$12k anyway, motor can be fixed by replacing 2 bearings - it's those "whine/milling noise" problem with discharge pitting in bearing's races... (google VFD bearing)

    • @captaincrunch3892
      @captaincrunch3892 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, $13K isn't $20K, and second of all, a single case of anything doesn't prove any kind of trend. Just look up any car close to $100K, and you will find a couple of cases of someone where something expensive failed.
      This applies to Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Maserati, etc. etc.
      Ever heard of the Porsche race bearing issue? Ever heard of the BMW VANOS problems? Ever heard of Mercedes SLS AMG, the oil change alone is $1200? I know of a Mercedes GL owner that had close to $30k in repairs in about 5 years, around $16K was covered by Mercedes, he had to cover the other $14K.

      Captain Crunch I know the battery lose distance but I’m thinking the motor will be fine

    • @captaincrunch3892
      @captaincrunch3892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, the batteries will slowly lose capacity as the car ages. But the motor will not have any issues. They designed them to last 1 Million miles, the early motors had a batch of defective bearings which was fixed with later updates.
      The capacity loss is around 1% for every 30.000 miles or so. So he should be able to drive it around 600k miles or more before the batteries become an issue.

    • @Sirricardo6
      @Sirricardo6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Voltage sag under load will definitely increase with age so I would expect it would have worst acceleration.

    • @captaincrunch3892
      @captaincrunch3892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is not voltage sag. The voltage is regulated by the cars inverter and inverters have a wide input range. The only limitation will be current, but Lithium Ion batteries have no issues with keeping current stable even at lower voltages.
      So, if the battery is anywhere close to being charged, the performance decrease will be exactly zero.
