  • Gundam Age is by far the most unpopular Gundam entry in the Gundam franchise. But why? A professor tries to dissect why it failed and a discussion started on the Yaraon Blog about it.

G Reconguista was complete shit, the storytelling was garbage. AGE was watchable after hearing that the maker took other gundam storylines and mobile suit designs and combined them known as AGE.

I liked Age because of the idea of going through a family tree and seeing a Gundam evolve over time. The writing was lacking in some places, and the last arc was bad. Space Pirate Dad tried to save it with mid-life angst, but to no avail.

I gave up on build fighters, am I crazy because of that? I know its everywhere right now and been polupar for the past few years, but I was bored to tears trying to pay attention to the god awful pacing and lack of real stakes, and there was that ace with zero social skills who is inexplicably from another universe, I honestly got more of a kick out of frame arms girl, which basically just plagiarised the battle concept

Gundam Age was NOT kid friendly at all. the entire show centered around the first main character trying to commit genocide the entire time. The literal hero of the show's entire reason for fighting went from "save everyone cause my mom died, and i helped build the gundam" to "you killed the girl i liked, now i will kill you're entire goddamn race". The show's main themes were genocide, and "it's ok to hate people that are different than you are", until the third main character, in which we got your typical "I'mma a pacifist, but will fight to make you stop fighting but wont kill you" character.
The show was VERY dark for something that looked so kid friendly, and while the whole idea of splitting the show into 3 stories about members of a family through the years was a neat concept, it needed far more than the standard 50 or so episodes to play out such a story. It was slow, it went very fast, you never actually had an opportunity to become attached to any characters, and there was just so much else wrong with it.

K, based on your reply, I am certain you didnt pay attention to the story. No, Flit didnt go on to kill the entire civilisation of the Vagan army because his girlfriend was friggin cannon fodder, rather it was because he did not see the Vagan as a "human" anymore. They use people for their own survival, even if it means killing them off. Flit's personality took a turn since he realised what the Vagan truly was. Yeah true, his girlfriend died, but imagine if you took someone else and put him/her in the Farsia (the machine Flit's GF was piloting, also im very lazy to type out the full spelling of "girlfriend") he, would frankly, turn into the same personality that he is right now. Speaking of which, when you say DARK, you are only referring to Flit. That part of the AGE series was dark since they made Flit into a friggin psychopath that would eat your eyes out if you behaved improperly. But look at the other 2 people, Asemu and Kio. They were only fighting under the leadership of Flit. Kio is the best example. Shanalua told him that keeping himself alive out in the field is top priority since she learnt that Kio was adapting an offensive fighting style, and who was it that taught him that? Flit. Gundam AGE may look like a dark anime, but thats only because of the character Flit. Everyone keeps their own personality, even if they were to be under the leadership of Flit. Kio keeps his pacifist personality despite his grandfather telling him to kill everyone he sees. Thats the beauty of Gundam AGE, they manage to keep each character's personality untouched and unchaged throughout the series, and bump it up a little only when there is an emotional event. So, saying Gundam AGE is dark is almost entirely wrong.

Honestly Gundam AGE failed because it wasn't marketed properly.
The series was created to get a younger generation of children around ages 6-12 into Gundam by competing with pokemon, digimon and yokai watch, this is why AGE was created in collaboration with level-5 who developed the Gundam AGE rpg.
However AGE was barely marketed as a kid's show and so the only ones who were watching attention were Gundam fans, most of which are anywhere from late teens to early forties.
I honestly think a lot of the hate the show got was unwarranted and
due to it being apart of the Gundam franchise a different age group latched onto it and hated the show because it wasn't the "serious war drama" Gundam they wanted.
Imo I thought it was alright for what it was, but if Bandai ever tries something like this again (which they kinda did with build fighters but I digress) they need to really make it clear to their consumers who their demographic is going to be.

Underrated coment. Your comment holds more weight compared to the channel's undeniably biased opinion. Sourcing Yaraon of all places, where the articles are click bait isn't exactly doing the world a favor. This is by no means something that is "Trending in Japan" and is simply an Internet farce that's used to deliver opinionated driven news. IBO which was and is one of the heavily marketed series didn't fair well and has had viewerships comparable to Age.
Considering the Quality of both plamo and TV show of IBO, Banrise did well to undermine it's potential. It also led to one of the Animation director to leave. That's more of news than this, but still isn't an actual trend.

Infinite view, Exactly. They managed to pull off GBF by marketing it for what it was, a fighting tournament toy show, putting it on a platform that gets a lot of traction from their target audience, TH-cam, and sticking to their premise like glue. I showed GBF to a pre-teen boy who never heard of Gundam nor watched much anime, and he was hooked and asking his mom for Gunpla within a couple weeks. That's how you target a show.
Age never felt like it knew exactly who it was trying to target and kept trying to be things it wasn't.

japzone Don't forget that GBF has large amount of fan-service... Not just the MILFs, boobs and ass type of fan-service... What made GBF a slight success to me is that they put characters from other main gundam series like Quatro bajeena, ramba ral, domon kasshu and many more! And people even call GBF gundam valhalla because some dead gundam characters appear in the series...

Gundam Age follows the 'All Out Faction War' formula we've seen in previous Gundam titles. Such as Gundam 0079, Seed and Seed Destiny but there was just something off about it. The enemy faction, which I can't seem to remember much about them other than they're from Mars, wasn't that interesting. Interesting premise but just bad execution. The characters were meh and nothing TOO memorable. I think AGE is the reason we haven't had another 'All Out Faction War' type Gundam series in a while. I was never a big fan of what IBO was, which is basically Young teenagers fighting against the establishment (Wing, 00, War in Pocket). I hope the next Gundam iteration is all out war again with some good story and pacing. AGE was just...meh. I only finished it because there were times where it actually looked like it was starting to get good.

Reconguista in G confused me and I never finished it. But, I can see that Gundam Age shows respect to the original series. Age-1 was model after the RX-72 Gundam, Age-2 was after Zeta Gundam , Age-3 was after ZZ Gundam and Age-FX was after Amuro’s Nu Gundam. The story branch out well, and they didn’t push on forcing to make multiple other Gundams.

i like the overal design of the units, what i wasnt as much fan of, was the gimmicks they went for this time around. there are too many face palming "kits" in age that you have to stop and think who in their right mind would pilot/design this abomination?
they were too preocupied with themes instead of functions, that meant lack of personality, and closer to "mobile suits cosplaying".
on a side note, thats also the reason im not a fan of crossbone, however, there we at least functional suits(well so long we dont count those 3 abominations of super hero cliche we got, but i digress).

while I don;t like all the designs some of my favorites are from AGE,
the Gundam AGE-1 full glansa and AGE-2 double bullet are beautiful.
I can see why it's not that popular but I did enjoy watching Gundam Age,

Not my favorite Gundam but still one I loved when I finished it: it told three Gundam stories with in one series, didn't have a lot of what could be considered padding and I enjoyed seeing the evolution aspect in the series as the Gundam updated for each generation in the series. I thought it was very nice overall. Shame to hear it didn't do so hot.

I'd say IBO had the right setting. Orphaned kids fighting to survive in a cruel and unforgiving world ruled by corrupt and greedy scum bags. There is no war involved, compared to other series, the ones in IBO would be dwarfed as skirmishes, plus the one sided nature of said skirmishes. It's just a shame that the execution was done poorly.

IBO was nowhere near perfect in tone and design. It failed horribly in execution and its tone made no sense in context.
And are we going to ignore the fact that Age had a lot pretty mature themes about it that was handled relatively well. Flit was basically genocidal; there was the theme of regressing genetically for more combat power at the cost of basically not advancing the human race; an entire race of people was basically forgotten in the anals of history until they reemerged.

"A Gundam is an advanced, high performance mobile suit, often constructed to be much more powerful than the standard production mobile suits. They are generally equipped with the latest experimental technology available at the time of their construction. The definition of a Gundam varies from one timeline to another." A Gundam should look unique because they are models or rather a representative figure of their timeline or Era.

I feel that people didn't like AGE for one simple reason: mecha fans are super allergic to being thought of as immature. I think that's why Danball Senki got ignored, too, at least over here (and isn't it dead now?). Sure, anime fans in general are like this, but mecha fans seem to be particularly bad about it.
It sucks, too, 'cause the merch for AGE was amazing, and could have led to some really cool stuff if it had been even remotely popular. Action figures where you can mix-and-match parts, then take it to an arcade and scan it in and fight your buddy's custom MS. Can't make it to the arcade? No problem, grab an AGE Device, and maybe also the interactive Haro; they both can scan your figures (and also your Advanced Grade model kits) and let you play mini games to level them up and stuff. Also, seeing as it was produced by Level 5 (just like Danball), there's a FANTASTIC game (also like Danball, which actually has a handful of fun games), an action RPG for PSP that also lets you mix-and-match parts to make custom MS, and then level them up and whatnot, like a prototypical Gundam Breaker.
At least the Try Age arcade/card game survived, I can only assume because it plays down the AGE part and has MS and characters from all of the Gundam AUs.

Gundam Age did pretty good if you ask me in my opinion and the Gundam design's and are really cool and you shouldn't judge the series by just looking at the art design but i do agree that it was rushed by Kio's arc and it's actually quite dark that a lot of people didn't notice like Flit lost a lot of people he cared about before losing himself to get revenge on the Vagan. This series deserves more credit than it should have

  • @NicholsToys

The people who skipped AGE because of the designs missed out on what I believe is one of the greatest Gundam story concepts in history. It wasn't perfect but I think they delivered if you look at the big picture.
Sadly, we can't blame humanity for always just taking things at face value.
Anyway I think AGE should've had more episodes per arc. They could've fixed its problems with a higher budget.
In terms of marketing, AGE wasn't very successful (because of the conflicting audience targets) but I think it was still a very good experiment. Heck, I think we wouldn't have the highly successful Build Fighters if it weren't for the lessons learned from AGE.

Age was supposed to be a game, and somewhere along the line they decided to go anime with it. There are apparently a lot of glaring issues that usually come with such drastic media transitions. It's been years since I dug into this so that's a grotesque simplification and one reason it didn't do well.

IMO, what ruined AGE besides the writing is the fact that we saw the other two protagonist before their arcs which threw the surprise elements away. I loved the first arc as a throwback of sorts to MSG, but it got worse and worse. I wish it was way better, but oh well.

    • @AlongCameASpider
      @AlongCameASpider 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Gundam is a coming of age story, it was always about teens, or boys, coming to realize that the world they live in ain't so small. You see it happen with Amuro, Kamille, Judau, Kou, the kid from war in the pocket who got caught in between the crossfire, Kou, Banagher, Kira (yes I'm using seed), Setsuna and so many other pilots. It's about waking up to the real world, however terrible it might be, and brave the eventual storm by getting to understand OTHER people. You might call these pilots EMO but they are just kids trying to adjust to the world they don't fully understand (the brutality of war more specifically).
Thunderbolt is a great series, but I think it's what happens when two sides abandon empathy. Io is a great pilot (one of the better non-new type federation pilots), but he doesn't understand his opponent, and that's why he never truly defeats Darryl. Char's counter attack is one of the greatest animated stories of Gundam history, but even through all the fighting, the characters always strived to understand the enemy.
So ¯\_ツ_/¯ I like EMO teens as pilots because of their naive nature -refusing to kill a lot of the times- and their ability to extend empathy towards others -and thus becoming new-types-.

    • @Errorcutive
      @Errorcutive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Unlimited Phantasy sorry but im not fuckin american, and second dont you all even get annoyed by the endless crying bout and bullshit, Tomino wanted to make a war story in 0079 but the emo bs part got in too much imo, how can you relate to war time condition when all your time watching is spend on emo bs.
Truth be told, having adult protagonist helped focus the story on their suffering due to the war NOT their puberty bs.

    • @AlongCameASpider
      @AlongCameASpider 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I don't get tired of watching the struggles of people trying to understand each other on the battlefield with cool mobile suits warfare mixed in between if that's what you are asking. Mind you Gundam was one of the darkest animes to come out at its time, unlike anime of today where every other season we would get a gore fest or two. As for relating to war time conditions through the eyes of a new partaker in the war, it's one of the oldest narrative tools available to writers. By having a character as young as the main targeted audience, the character can grow with the viewers and thus have greater impact when a particular character is killed off. RIP KAMILE'S Mind.
I understand where you are coming from. Little boys are whiny, ok. I think though, it's just real life (minus the giant mech suit part)
You say Thunderbolt has adult characters, but Daryl is most likely below or just about 20 years of age. As recruitment age is usually 18+1 year of infantry combat. Io also is probably not even in his 30. These two would be considered as kids by actual adults with 30+ years of experience under their belt. They both are absolutely haunted by CHILDhood memories. However you might say it, these 'adult' characters are still shaped by the experiences they had as a child (which all ties back into the coming of age theme).

I didn't think that Age was all THAT bad. It wasn't as good as preceding series 00, but it had its moments. It was definitely better than the second half of SEED Destiny and G Reconguista, but that's not a high bar to achieve. I didn't like the character designs, I didn't like how it was basically 3 series + movie crammed into 50 episodes (the parallels between MSG, Z, ZZ, and CCA are way too obvious). The technology didn't really seem to make much sense and it seemed to devolve into "magic, but in space" with a few of the suits (like with energy Bits, fram farsia's beam ribbon, etc.) The only arc that was worth watching was Asemu's arc, and I think the folks in charge knew that since they made a movie dedicated just to Asemu / Zehart. It's disappointing that so much focus was on side characters that ultimately didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things (Obright, Captain Milas in the third arc, a few of the villains), but not enough on other characters like Desil, Zehart, or even Flit. I wanted someone call out Flit for his douchebaggery, but no one would until the self-righteous Kio did it, and he only did it because his Grandpa was about to commit genocide. But other than that stuff? It was decent, just not as deep or interesting as other Gundam series. But then again, it was riding off the coat tails of Gundam 00 which, in my mind, is one of the best gundam series especially given that it's tackling post-9/11 settings and themes.

I'm glad that you titled this "Why Gundam Age Failed" because while it failed, it wasn't bad by any means. It took quite a different approach in many respects that clearly didn't pay off but it wasn't bad. In fact, I liked the concept of the entire thing and watching it play out was a good time.
But things like the story beginning to pick up, designs, etc. are subjective and it's unfortunate that it suffered because people couldn't get past the fact that it strayed from what they're used to. Gundam IS what it is and while you can't deviate too far from the original design, AGE didn't really do that. It just looked different from its predecessors but it's not so different that I wouldn't consider it good.
SD Gundam is the type of overly dynamic take on Gundam that's just too different for words... and it's not good.

Didn't got a chance to actually watched Gundam Age, bit what is circulation in the fandom is that the story and character arcs are too compressed and didn't got the time to flourished due to the 50 episode limit of the series. BUT. The kits from the Age series are one of the best kits from any line. the kits looked almost exactly to the animation counterparts, have good articulations and color separations. HG Age FX and HG/MG Age 2 line is my favorite.

Plus the Gundams have more cooler variant that didn't appear in both anime and manga but it did in the PSP game. I believe Level 5's interference for making it "child friendly" compressed this series and turning it into shit. Thus it failed in 2 ways; 1. It fails for younger audience for having dark plot and death scenes 2. It fails the older audiences (us) for failing to show the hidden plot holes and widening of the story (have you seen the teen Flit and his badass AGE-1 Razor, it only appeared in the game and NEVER on the series itself) which makes the characters and their development horrible.

I respectfully disagree with the "designed for kids thus adults don´t like it" statement.
While not false, shows like Teen Titans, Kim Possible and My little Pony - Friendship is Magic all were designed for kids yet had their largest fanbase among adults.
And those are just 3 shows that came to mind right now.

It was more due to a series of unfortunate events that I didn't get to watch AGE. The three-generation storyline was interesting on paper, but I understand it was also pivotal to the plot not being built up enough. There just wasn't enough time to do so given how ambitious the target was.
Out of the mecha designs, the AGE-2 Normal and Dark Hound appealed to me the most. Such a shame they didn't work so well in plastic model kit form.
I'm still trying to find ways of watching AGE...which is more than what I can say for Reconguista in G. Regardless of Tomino's involvement, I was just indifferent to that series. Looks like my indifference was justified.

I literally loved most mecha design in Gundam Age, they made it to target a younger audience and get them into the Gundam universe but it wasn't marketed properly as it was going up against Pokemon/digimon/etc. The G Bouncer is prolly one of my favorite mecha designs ever.

i liked gundam age and watched it all the way through, but it did have problems; it was WAY to ambitious with its story from underdeveloped story to characters. memory of eden was released to fill in some gaps but by that point it was to little to late. one of my biggest gripes with the anime was the female leads in each arc; you knew exactly what they were there for (love interests) and that was really it. also, devoting an entire episode near the end of the series to a character (spriggen) that gets killed off when they shouldve just spent that time developing the story and characters already there. they made some bad choices but i loved the premise they were going for in that it was introducing 3 heroes and asemus gundam age-2 and arc are still my favorite from the series. i just wish they spent more time developing the story and characters.

I watched a few episodes a couple years ago. That said I haven't gone back too finish and I also wondered why this Gundam series wasn't as popular? Until I came across videos such as these. 👍🏻

I loved AGE, most people just hated it because of it's design ( and kio asuno ) but ironnicaly it's one of the most interresting gundam ever, you have one of the best character devellopment ( not some dumb like hero or setsuna " i'm going to destroy the target " only mindset ) and for once an interresting story because or once we didn't just get the " we are the nice guys and we must stop the bad guys ", in fact even the vagan aren't bad, they just want to create an eden where their is no war or sickness, sadly the way they tried to do it put the humanity at war and our 3 heroes tries to put a end to that.
In fact AGE wasn't kid friendly at all, it was a lot about mass genocide and importante character dying... i mean... it's nearly the game of thrones of gundam with the number of character dying lol
Fun fact about the desing, even if it's indeed "toyish" it's acceptable because of it's graphism, you can't have highly detailed MS with that kind of graphism, in fact in that regard 00 is the real toyish one, despit having some incredible graphism their is nothing realistic about all the GN suit and gundams, it was like some HD toy.
If people want reallistic MS just go for SEED or iron blooded orphan.
Spoiler : a lot of people hated kio asuno for beeing to nice like kira yamato from SEED in worst but when you really analyse AGE you see it had to be that way since the real MC is flit asuno, since that one became more and more angry against the vagan he needed a grand child like kio to call back he's good side to let him finnaly became the savior he tried to be since the start of AGE.

I actually really enjoyed Age. I did find it more effort to like, initially, but the series has a lot to like about it. There's also a lot of nostalgia bait for older viewers in there. The more kid-friendly approach meant that main characters weren't dropping like flies, or dying of severe cases of not wearing their helmets on the bridge of a ship in battle (lookin' at you, Zeta Gundam!), but when those few deaths did happen, they hit hard because I'd been lulled into thinking everyone had plot armour. Also, despite teh kiddy animation style, Flit is undeniably one of the more badass Gundam protagonists. I mean, jumping from the cockpit of one mobile suit to another, in a hard vacuum, with no space suit? Fucking ballsy move. I think that was the moment I decided I really liked the show.
It even has a good internal consistency. In other seires, one might wonder why experienced military engineers are making machines that look like they're out of kids' stories. In Age, it holds up. There are all of these romanticised stories about the old White Mobilesuit, the Gundam,. If we buy the conceit that Flit is a child genius mobile suit designer, then of COURSE he's going to fully buy into the notion of the Gundam, like a child.
Basically, I consider Gundam Age to be a lot of effort, but WORTH the effort. It deserves props for being the first main series to take us beyond the Earth Sphere as a main setting, too. Previous series obviously had characters who had returned from Jupiter, but even those in which Jupiter featured heavily still occurred ONLY around the Earth Sphere. Gundam 00's alien life were from another place entirely, and the series' movie ended with them. It didn't really do anything more with the idea.

I watched all of it! I liked it way better than G Reco, but I can see why people skipped it. Age had "entry level Gundam" all over it, and that's before the Level 5 aesthetic. The designs looked more fitting for LBX/Danball Senki, which is why it turned hardcore fans off.

Iron Blooded Orphans went the extreme direction, and it did not exactly pay off big time. Look at the toys and merchandise by Bandai, they're still going with Gundam Wing, Seed, 00 (00 even gets a new movie). Veeeery quiet for IBO stuff.

    • @mlo009

Personally, I hated the ending (main characters and Gundams got wiped out like punks). But there are many other people that supported it and said it's refreshing. I couldn't be bothered arguing with them. Sales is all that mattered and the bottom line. So if IBO toys are not selling, then they won't try to do that dumb sh*t again.
