I haven't been into Lego for almost ten years now. But when I took a look into the Lego store for the hell of it, I couldn't help but leave with this set. Now I cannot stop buying Lego!
Honestly after having it since launch, I think it's well worth the 400. There's a lot of parts like the cloth flags/cape, the mini trees, printed shields, large green pieces.. that aren't really comparable to something like City Gardens that has tons of clear and blue pieces for the water. My friend came over with his kid last weekend and the kid was absolutely taken by the playability features and overall design. Lots of 'oh cool' when he found out he could sneak a forestman from under the front gate into the hideout, or escape from the prison. Regardless of people's stance on price, it's brilliantly designed. There's not a lot of wasted space, and there's a good 5 or so hidden areas you wouldn't know about unless you were the one that built it. I think between this set, the blacksmith, the GWP, Creator 3 in 1, and Castle in the Forest, we're at a really good place with castle already.
Love this set!! My family and I were planning on traveling for Labor Day - which was uber expensive - we had to cancel at the last second so I got this for my son and we spent 4 glorious days together as a family putting this together. Best $400 I could have spent
I think the right rock that slides left is meant more as an escape from the second dungeon cell, rather than an entrance to the forest guardians’ hideout. The rock on the left that slide right is just a secret place for their gear. The actual hideout can be “accessed” in two ways. The first is by going underneath the bridge past the bats. The second is by the secret path underneath the food stall section on the second building you featured.
This seems much more likely. That is a fantastic escape from the dungeon cell. The problem that arises, is that any escapee inadvertently exposes the other hideout immediately to the left anytime they attempt an escape. Calling it a secret entrance into the castle addresses that problem.
Yep! Dude missed that, and also totally missed the bathroom and _"functional"_ toilet with the turd (literally a brown frog) on the ground as well as the golden frog secret room being closed by opening up the left half. This set is incredible, and the price is fair.
The only miss in my book was not including a king. For a set that large with a figure spread that expansive, it's a noticeable exclusion. I might've liked to see a siege engine like a trebuchet included as well.
king needs an escape ship, even a small 20 piece thing would do. but does it need a king? perhaps its a knights outpost and the kings castle is elsewhere? hm.... or give us an expansion!
One small gripe I have with it aswell is the generic city faces used on alot of figures. And one other funny thing I realized is the queen's head and hair are the EXACT same pieces used for the wife figure in the medieval blacksmith set, there's even a slot in her hair to attach a crown piece onto 🤣 wish they atleast went with an exclusive head print and hair for the freaking queen
It is a top-notch build, and the playability and amount of minifigs really helped me at least feel I got a solid value with my purchase. Was a big buy for me, but I was so happy building that beauty!
Absolutely worth $400. The one thing I think could be argued is that this set needs some sort of villain or besieging force, perhaps comprised of 3-4 more dragon minifigs and a trebuchet or battering ram of some sort.
The figures, animals, and animal accessories like the horse bardings are worth over half the price of the entire set (200-250$) if you were to sell them individually on bricklink. Then you have a roughly 4300 piece castle build for 150-200$. Crazy good deal imo
Beautiful! The black and white walls (at 16:40) are half-timbered walls, the black being timbers and the white being plaster or wattle and daub. Very common in medieval construction. It is a very nice and accurate detail. Burg Castle near Solingen Germany has some nice examples of this architechture.
Oh, it's beautiful. I plan to populate it with some previous CMF series medieval minifigs like the King, Queen, Princess, Wizard, Heroic Knight, Jester, etc. Just waiting for a double VIP Points or decent GWP promotion before picking up this set (ironically, the Forestmen's Hideout GWP sold out just days before the Lion's Knight Castle was even released).
@@DuckBricks THAT SET IS AMAZING! I love the detail and the effort put into that set, just the interior is crazy! Do you think you could share my recent community post? Its a ninjago collab
On the first section of the castle above the armory there are working machicolations to drop the LEGO cylinders on the stairs. One of my favorite attentions to details they added.
This is precisely why I haven't bought it yet (Australia). As a lifetime castle fan, extremely happy with the gargantuan scale of the set, all the minifigres etc. Missed out on the forest hideout GWP, so waiting for double VIP or another good GWP
I thought the whole build was very enjoyable, full of nostalgia, and a lot of fun for $400. I love your analysis and agree with you 100% that it's a little overpriced, but I have no regrets on my purchase. ....though I was definitely regretting City Gardens half way through that build😅
A lot of people compare it to the city gardens, so I had a look at it, its really cool for what it is, but its no where near this castle. This is a timeless classic theme, as an outsider I do not understand the city gardens or the story. I also looked at the minis and most of them look like city minis and missing the animals and accessories. So for me the playability and fun, and stories lines that can be creates from a castle is unparalleled. Also I noted was tons of stickers, which the castle has none and am greatful for that. if they had cut the castle in half, they would not have gotten a 40 year old to buy a lego set after decades of not. If anything I would want it more decked out and larger, or other expansion sets. Though I was shocked at the price of Lego these days I am greatful for it, and looking at the state of the world if I have to save a little more to pay for something that is still a huge luxury its ok. As far as value, I do not get why this one has gotten so much scrutiny, yet other reviewers review even more expensive "orb battles" sets that are basically a big ship with like 4 minis. I think this is Legos greatest creation in balanced terms of beauty, fun, appeal to theme, size etc...
In The Netherlands the forestmen GWP was actually featured for the second time, so we did actually get it with the castle :) I'd say that set is worth about 30 dollar/euro, so that would close the gap from 350 to 400 basically. Also, building it was great fun! Basically no repetition in the build at all, a bunch of nice building techniques, and a bunch of nice "hidden" features which you wouldn't spot easily if you weren't the one building it. I've had friends over who are amazed by the detail of the set, and I still had to point out a lot of smaller details they had not even spotted yet like the brown "frog", the hidden golden frog, the bats etc. All in all considering the quantity and quality of the pieces and the amazing design, I think it is definitely worth the 400 bucks. Maybe we should consider the price per kilo instead of price per piece, to compensate for smaller pieces in some sets ;-) Also, hoping for more castle sets. Preferably cheaper to make it more accessible. Like in the 80's and 90's, when you could buy wall sections, siege engines, smaller castles etc. Maybe an extension even?
I just realize about the forestman, however honestly the forestman set is not really that good. Especially the tree house because when you place the mini figure in, the head is blocked by the window frame, it’s like not as well thought as the lion castle
@rochelimit's hangout yes that was something I noticed too. It's easily modifiable but annoying that out of the box that window in the tree house is useless
Love your review Ducksbricks!!! Always very thorough and detailed!!! Set is totally worth it especially if your a castle fan! Converted mine into Black Falcon Knight’s Castle since I have way more black falcons than crusaders! Also you have an amazing Lego collection!!!
Chris, Thanks for another highly entertaining and informative review! In your retrospective at the beginning, you forgot last year’s (2021) 3-in-1 Creator Castle.
Actually, the Death Star is $500 and the UCS MF is $850, so people would have to spend quite a bit more to get those instead. I think the price of the castle is fair.
You should put your all Lego Castle sets together and do a video about it! It would be so nice to see, especially now when I am thinking where (to Castle Theme) to spend some money onto. I also just ordered Vladek's Dark Fortress (2005) from Bricklink yesterday. I hope it's a good set...
After watching and reading several reviews for this and being a huge classic castle fan, I'm looking forward to this build experience even as far as the box itself!
Great review. The play value looks insane high to me. Multiple disciplines of minifigs, a castle that can split up and open. Looks like a great basis for kids, perfect for expanding with smaller sets of forest men or knigts. Love the set.
I agree. I was completely on board when I thought we were getting a $300 set. When I found out it was $400 I decided not to purchase it. It’s gorgeous and I would still like to have it someday, but not for that price. 😭😭
It's honestly worth the price. The piece count is high, the build is huge, all printed pieces, and it includes a whopping 22 minifigures, including 9+1 completely exclusive and remastered crusader/lion knights soldier figures + a unique queen variant of it, 3 forestmen (adult woman, adult man, child girl), and 3 black falcon soldiers. You also get 2 horses with exclusive armor pieces for them, and a cow figure among others. If you were to try to create a castle moc of similar size out of for example the 3 in 1 creator castle, you'd need to combine about 4 of them, which will run you nearly 400$ for all of the sets. And with those 4 sets you only reach 12 figures, 8 black falcons and 4 blacksmiths. No molded animal figures are included at all, no exclusive fabric cape/flag pieces, no exclusive or rare printed pieces/minifigure pieces either. To put it in perspective, the average price for each of those lion knight soldier figures go for 10-15$ each, the queen figure goes for 25-30$, the peasants and horses go for 7-8$ each, and the 2 horse bardings go for 20-25$ each on bricklink
Here in Canada the castle is $499 and Ninjago city is $449 so still a $50 difference but mos eislie canteena is the same price as the castle and roughly the same size so for me the price is expected. It would be nice if it was a bit cheaper but unfortunately it's not. When it comes to me looking at your example of the castle vs the millennium falcon I'd hands down choose the castle. I have the force awakens one from a while ago and even in comparison to the $200 one available now I'd much rather get the smaller one as it's easier to display and play with. For big $300+ sets I only ever buy them if they are a building as that is the only time it feels worth it to me
This set is amazing. My absolute favorite part of this set is the “royal turd” as I’ve dubbed it. I thought it was weird how they used a brown frog & then while building the toilet I was like “oh…OH!” 😂
I think you’re right about the price. I do want this set but I still can’t bring myself to spend that much on it, and it’s still in stock on their website.
I just purchased it. There was a $30 VIP discount for 100 VIP points, so that made it $370. I got Optimus Prime earlier so I could get the Forestmen Hideout. Will probably be picking up the Medieval Blacksmith next month.
I think the one at the side of the castle is a hideaway for the forest men but the other is a secret way out of the castle should it ever fall in battle.
Personally i think 400$ isnt bad for this set. While marketed as 18+, it does fit as a childrens toy as well as a display piece. Personally, i got it brand new for 330$ so im not complaining 😊
Great review! I really appreciate your level-headed view outlook on this amazing set. I'm in the boat of people who would have probably been swayed at $350, unquestionably at $300. Now I, like many others, am waiting for double VIP points and/or GWP... which sadly lines up with a lot of other new Lego sets. I love the new Lighthouse, but $300 is just too much for me to grab it without some kind of solid bonus or discount. Thankfully the one of the bunch that's the most important to me, the Galaxy Explorer, turned out to be both an amazing build and a good deal. Keep up the great content!
Ido like this set I don’t have it yet though I plan too. With so many sets at that point what one do I get? There is the Lighthouse and the new UCS Razor Crest too. I think like the Modulars the should release a classic castle style set once a year at the modular price point. A space set a year could be nice too.
@@piotr78 Ah yes sorry about that. Indeed Pirates had some nice sets back in the day. And that Imperial Flagship from a few years back was pretty awesome. Thats only 3 sets too with those 3 themes I think it could be done.
AwesomE review!!👍🏼 This set totally worth the price specially if comparing to the new $350 Black Panther bust (les than 3000 pieces, 0 minifigures... Now that's an stupid price🤣)
It's a nice castle and I want it but I won't pay $400 for it, I can't afford that. I went to Target and got the 3 in 1 Creator Castle instead and it's only $100.
the important difference here is that the ninjago city garden set is full of stickers, whereas this set is all prints. that could account for the difference
DuckBricks has a specific video on his channel about this. It's called "HOW TO: Hang LEGO Sets from the Ceiling, super easily! DuckBricks Tutorials" from December 18, 2020. If you go to 6:33 in the video, he shows the exact hangers he uses along with fishing line.
It's a beautiful castle, but I just can't see myself spending $400 on it; even with double VIP or a GWP; with $400 I could buy so many other nicer, smaller sets, and also stack up on GWPs for even more value
All I want is some of the accessories food so.e weapons horses with covers and figures its nice to have the castle coming back but I don't like the bare back I wish they extend the set and went with a different look still I hope to buy this set one day if not hopefully just the figures only all together
I guess, Lego even wants to keep this set something special not everybody has. We all know, how crazy castles are going up in value - double the retail used are the cheapest ones. I wouldn't be surprised, if the set retires before the end of 2023 and then explodes in value, mostly because it is by far the biggest castle ever made.
It could, but then I hope they have another in line to make a collection. but really more needs to come out and be available for a long time, for all, not just the collectors and investors.
I just bought this set and even tho its not finished yet i think its vary much worth the 400 dollars and personally i hate star wars so i would not spend more money on that over this cause the only way id buy a set from that theme is if it was a minifigure series but i can see why other people might as for the downsides of this set the only thing i can think of is one of the lion knights should have been replaced with a king minifigure but i can forgive that because cmf series 13 included a pretty good looking one so ill probrably buy that one for it since i collect those anyways
In your analysis you mentioned more comparible sets like the Star Wars Death Star. But there's not one at retail for $400. Were you referring to a different set?
I wished LEGO just made a set for all the finalist instead of just a grey building and a grey spaceship with a print of one finalist with very high sore winner vibes attached to it.
@@piotr78 there were no builds, the top 4 finalist of the poll last year were space, pirates, bionicle and castle. Space and castle got stand alone sets and you can argue pirates got one with barracuda bay in 2020. Bionicle was the only theme that got royaly screwed over
@@ThatTarkur oooh it was a poll, gotcha. Sadly I missed barracuda bay and I'm not willing to pay 300 for it now, I'll find it cheap one day. Hope Bionicle fans get what they want too!
At this price, I would require Double XP and a killer GWP on top, preferably a set that would give me a King and more Knights. But I would require both XP and a worthy GWP.
Maybe this is the point where Lego should find a middle ground between 2022 compact building and 2007 large structures with few parts. I enjoy modern sets less because you spend 30 minutes on a tiny little thing where as with Exo-Force you've made a full mac
I would really like knight queen. Searched on EBay and that is one expensive mini figure. I would guess the sweet spot on the price would be around $350.00
350$ would've been the right price. Barracuda bay was 200$ and was 75% of the weight in parts. 350$ would've given them about 17% profit increase over Barracuda which to me is fine and in line with their recent price increase. 400$ is just them being greedy.
You are pretty spot on about the price point and appeal for this set. $250 -$300 makes more sense, if they made it smaller, and $350 for this size. Even though some of us AFOL could afford a set like this, the size, and value vs other sets, does cause only the most dedicated fans to purchase... Thanks for the thoughtful review!

I think the one at the side of the castle is a hideaway for the forest men but the other is a secret way out of the castle should it ever fall in battle.
The Castle is selling for higher prices on eBay. You’ll be amazed @ what it’s being/been parted out for.
This room full of legos is amazing. How do you clean the dust off ?
Personally i think 400$ isnt bad for this set. While marketed as 18+, it does fit as a childrens toy as well as a display piece. Personally, i got it brand new for 330$ so im not complaining 😊
Good job Chris! Can’t wait ti build my copy as well .
Have fun building!
Dude I had the first one when I was a kid I loved it
@duckbricks Now you need to review the lego adventure time ideas set
Great review! I really appreciate your level-headed view outlook on this amazing set. I'm in the boat of people who would have probably been swayed at $350, unquestionably at $300. Now I, like many others, am waiting for double VIP points and/or GWP... which sadly lines up with a lot of other new Lego sets. I love the new Lighthouse, but $300 is just too much for me to grab it without some kind of solid bonus or discount. Thankfully the one of the bunch that's the most important to me, the Galaxy Explorer, turned out to be both an amazing build and a good deal. Keep up the great content!
Honestly, same. I hope LEGO releases more stuff like the Galaxy Explorer; reasonable price, multiple builds, and fantastic designs
@@HIIMPIEZ The creator pirate ship is like that (value wise) Can be had for around 80€ and has one great build and 2 good ones.
I wanted it when I was kid but it was $100 and dad can’t afford it.
Ido like this set I don’t have it yet though I plan too. With so many sets at that point what one do I get? There is the Lighthouse and the new UCS Razor Crest too. I think like the Modulars the should release a classic castle style set once a year at the modular price point. A space set a year could be nice too.
Add pirates please to complete the trifecta!
A stupidly priced product like the BP set doesn't really tell us much tho!
Please review lego nexo knights cause it had a crossover with chima it's called broom of doom
bro has every lego ever made in the background
You skipped the Creator 3 in 1 Medieval Castle set from last year.
I always used the old man face from Ice Planet 2002 for the wizards
It's a nice castle and I want it but I won't pay $400 for it, I can't afford that. I went to Target and got the 3 in 1 Creator Castle instead and it's only $100.
that is one God level collection . . .
my guy really started the video by walking out of his room
the important difference here is that the ninjago city garden set is full of stickers, whereas this set is all prints. that could account for the difference
“Itself”
~Duckbricks~
This set is beautiful, thank you!
Black falcon barding alone is worth 400 dollars 🤩
Hey duckbricks you forgot the hidden golden frog in the hinge that you were talking about
Such a great channel, really enjoying all the reviews
Thanks for watching!!
i would preder Lotr (new series) castle theme sets , i hope we will see remake of that cus lotr was best lego wawe
hey man can u tell me how you attached your legos to the roof? i need to know what kind of hanger and line you used
DuckBricks has a specific video on his channel about this. It's called "HOW TO: Hang LEGO Sets from the Ceiling, super easily! DuckBricks Tutorials" from December 18, 2020. If you go to 6:33 in the video, he shows the exact hangers he uses along with fishing line.
I'm looking at getting back into lego and my favorite was always castles. I'm torn whether to get this or instead get 3 creator ones.
It's a beautiful castle, but I just can't see myself spending $400 on it; even with double VIP or a GWP;
with $400 I could buy so many other nicer, smaller sets, and also stack up on GWPs for even more value
All I want is some of the accessories food so.e weapons horses with covers and figures its nice to have the castle coming back but I don't like the bare back I wish they extend the set and went with a different look still I hope to buy this set one day if not hopefully just the figures only all together
The only thing this set is missing is a king minifigure
For those of us who love Lego castles like me ... I don't care how expensive it is.
That's a really nice castle and vid
30:40 these walls are cool!
I think I’m going to get this soon. It’s just so cool.
There's no ladder to the top of the gatehouse?
the more I look at it, the more I tihnk its not worth it . Very good set , but the minifigs are kind of weak imo.
I Will serve you, my lord of Lego
does the kitchen have minifig acces?
I guess, Lego even wants to keep this set something special not everybody has. We all know, how crazy castles are going up in value - double the retail used are the cheapest ones. I wouldn't be surprised, if the set retires before the end of 2023 and then explodes in value, mostly because it is by far the biggest castle ever made.
It could, but then I hope they have another in line to make a collection. but really more needs to come out and be available for a long time, for all, not just the collectors and investors.
Hi! What is this brown kind of fort set at 0:32 ???
I actually got the bard from the recent CMF series so I think he’d go great with this set if I ever get it.
Have you done total weight comparison between the two including figures to determine if it's overpriced?
Weigh them both... What's the total weight on the castle and then on the gardens set?
I just bought this set and even tho its not finished yet i think its vary much worth the 400 dollars and personally i hate star wars so i would not spend more money on that over this cause the only way id buy a set from that theme is if it was a minifigure series but i can see why other people might as for the downsides of this set the only thing i can think of is one of the lion knights should have been replaced with a king minifigure but i can forgive that because cmf series 13 included a pretty good looking one so ill probrably buy that one for it since i collect those anyways
This set is great! As cool as other 400 dollar sets are, I would rather this than a republic gunship with a mace windu and a pilot.
That's amazing!
Where can i check out the other finalist builds?
I’d advise checking out Bricklink! Usually prices are a lot more fair there
The proble I have - even if I buy it - what do I with it? Will I keep something in my closet that can be the best toy ever for some kid?
350$ would've been the right price. Barracuda bay was 200$ and was 75% of the weight in parts. 350$ would've given them about 17% profit increase over Barracuda which to me is fine and in line with their recent price increase. 400$ is just them being greedy.
Nice castle moc
Lego screwed over Castle AFOLs when they delayed the release date. No gwp for their biggest spenders. If anything it should have been a day earlier.
Great review!
Great video!
I think It's a little overpriced by hey I don't wanna complain, the building experience was really really nice😀
