  • www.autobytel.c... With the number of luxury hybrid cars on the rise, BMW is trying to corner every segment with their line of ActiveHybrids. Originally there was the 7-Series and the X-6 ActiveHybrid. Now for 2013 BMW gives us the hybrid version of both the 3-Series and the 5-Series. This vehicle is the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid5 which is essentially a 535i with the addition of an electric motor and a battery pack. This model reduces both emissions and fuel consumption. The base price of the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is $61,400.
There are a handful of new systems on board the ActiveHybrid 5 that are designed to make the car more efficient without losing any of the luxury or sportiness normally associated with the 535i. The car's ECO PRO mode ensure the right amount of power for the situation without sacrificing the performance aspect BMW owners have come to expect. The Hybrid Start/Stop function turns the car off while idle. The 8-speed STEPTRONIC transmission is smooth and very efficient. The car's ECO PRO system also works to make you a more efficient driver. The ActiveHybrid 5 can go into sail mode which means the drivetrain disconnects from the engine as the motor goes down to zero RPM's and essentially just coasts which adds to the fuel economy.
Instead of a smaller more fuel efficient engine, the engineers at BMW have instead decided to keep the 3.0 liter turbocharged 6-cylinder. This engine in stock form produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. of torque. But now with the addition of a 35 HP electric motor, the ActiveHybrid 5 now makes 335 horsepower. This is not necessarily good for fuel economy. The electric motor does allow this luxury sedan to dive over 30 MPH on battery alone. This means an improvement is seen in city fuel economy. The final figures are 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway.
The interior of the ActiveHybrid 5 is identical to that of the 535i. The instrument panel is one of the best in the business. BMW does not try to be cute or fancy, instead they offer up a very driver focused set of gauges that are easy to read and understand. The center console of the 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is also top notch. The large navigation screen is a must for this luxury sedan segment. The A/C and stereo system controls are simple and intuitive. Everything on the interior makes sense.

Got an activehybrid 3, same engine but in a 3 series, car is stage 1 plus intake pushing about 415hp to the crank and getting 30+ mpg even in town with maximum of 44 in eco pro driving cool. I just love this car, it's a beast when you want it and can also have diesel fuel efficiency without the tractor sound and the reliability issues!

I used to sell BMW's. One complaint of customers about the ActiveHybrid series is the lack of AWD. RWD only. People the world over are fixated on having AWD - especially in the USA. I drive rear wheel drive (only) BMW's all the time. And I live in Chicago. In the WINTER. How? Look at it this way: the AWD option is roughly a little over $2,500. I buy a winter wheel/tire package for my RWD BMW's that cost me $1,000. Not endorsing them at all - but with the Continental Extreme Winter Contact tires on ice and snow ... I NEVER have a problem. My wife drives an X3 (AWD) with mixed purpose tires. My RWD car, with the Continental's on it, will outperform her AWD car in the snow. Period. And - I saved $1,500!

+David Spencer YES! Plus rear wheel drive are way more fun!! You don't stop any faster with all wheel drive. :-). I'm getting an active hybrid 3 in 30 days. Cant wait. I live in Minnesota am not worried at all about all wheel drive. That's what I drove for 20 plus years, no issues. Good snow tires are the key.
The 3 and 5 avtivehybrid's are a MUCH better value used than a regular 535i or 335i now.

So do you just put them on when it gets cold and keep them on all winter? I live in Jersey so we don't always get snow. Guess I'm just wondering if that's the best plan for me.

Amazing how little these are on the used market - MUCH less than the regular 535i. Great deal used.

I have an active hybrid 5 and get 30+ mpg in town and 40+mpg on so yhh if you are going to drive it like a race car then then your mpg will drop..

I think the GS450h is actually worth the extra price for being a hybrid. And I'm sure the 7-series hybrid is beat by the LS600hl.

They really should have put the 2.0 liter turbo inside because it gets better fuel economy then then the 3.0 liter turbo. Along with the batteries and electric motor, the MPG would improve by a lot.

what the hell it cost more money, its a hybrid, and it still gets the same as a non hybrid. Yep i think ill stick with a tesla model S for that price.

The Infiniti M35h is the true luxury sport hybrid out of the bunch; it actually gets good mileage.

Actually, it's NOT $8K more. First of all, you get a BMW rebate on the Hybrid in the amount of $4,500 (EcoCredit). In addition to that, some options are cheaper on the Hybrid. So you are looking at an additional $2-3K, not $8K.
