I never understood the hybrid pricelevel as well. But a car journalist told me, that is was more a lifestyle choice, than an economic choice. Since people care about the environment and stuff
We looked at a 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 series last year. It had 37,500 miles on it and was a nice and tidy car, the best thing about it was the Fuel economy (47.9 compared to the 335i 27.8) didn’t have it in the end due to it being a saloon and we needed the extra boot capacity on the estate
Stibam elgrin He is only half wrong, Diesel and petrol/gasoline are both fractional distillates of petroleum fuel oil, there are a number of engines that can run on either, the difference only lies in the fractional amount of distillation.
people complain about the review, they just said the only reason to buy this car is if you're looking for tax deductions and lower running costs - although being a bmw i suspect those lower running costs are still higher than a lex.
If you was a private individual buying this car, you would have to own this car for 12 years before you get a return on your investment, based on the 7k price differences, and thats before factoring in the differences in depreciation, interest paid if you was to finance the vehicle, and insurance (the hybrid is also a higher insurance group, so could be even more expensive to insure than a regular 5-series, meaning it could take even longer to see a return)
I can only assume that Fifth Gear's target audience are not car enthusiasts, because unless I sneezed at an inopportune moment, there was not a single mention of how that extra weight affects handling, or how the electric motor affects power delivery and throttle response. Not really a proper review in my eyes.
The G-Man Way to be a hater mate. See for yourself at around 2:49 when Jason comments that it feels great and smooth, on 3:29 when Vicki says the car doesn't feel extra heavy, and the e-boost mention at 3:00.
The G-Man With a limited timeframe that's able to be shown on tv, this less than 6 minute review already provides adequate information and is decent in my opinion.
Forget the driver's side of the argument, some people do buy this car for daily uses. I agree Chris Harris would have covered more on the handling than this, but for most of the potential buyers, I don't think they'll ever notice any difference in terms of dynamic between the hybrid and the petrol models. 3 minutes for petrolheads, 3 minutes for normal people, this video still makes sense to me mate.
That much more for that little mpg. Small boot heavier more complex batteries cost a million to replace......maybe resale will help as its a top model. Surely you buy a 330 diesel
so we didn't find out anything about the car, how does it handle, how does it feel or really anything usefull .. they just summed up the pros and cons everybody already knew about since the first prius came out
still34u Did you actually watch the video? Did you not hear Tiff pointing out the loss of luggage space at around 1:02? Or Jonny showing his dislike on the cheap-feeling leather at 1:48? Or Jason saying it feels smooth at 2:50? Or that Vicki saying it doesn't feel extra heavy at 3:29? For real man, what is wrong with you?
Dont know what BMW was thinking with the outside design, such a solid car but not that pretty. Still better than any American car made...ever, and I'm American.
+Daniel Castaneda dont get me worng, the tesla is one of best cars the american automobile industrie has ever made ´but it has some serious practical issues inside. But you are right a modell s is still one of my favourite cars... but i think your seond example is more like a bad joke.
This was filmed a few years before the LaFerrari (or McLaren P1, Porsche 918 or BMW i8...) existed... back when everyone still considered "hybrid" to be synonymous with "Toyota Prius".
sure, i get the point, but still, i wouldnt mind a good looking car with good running costs. That's why i'm considering an A7, good looking, and shouldnt be too expensive to have around :) Rather a 5 series hybrid than a prius
xBuzz996 Yeah, an Audi A7 TDI Bi-Turbo with the S-Line package is pretty much the ultimate daily driver you can get. Great looks and great handling thanks to the Quattro and it gets 37mpg.
xBuzz996 A7 is the rival of the 6 series, and if you get the grand coupe,it is so much better than the A7,because of the BMW engines : best in fuel economy and at the same time very reliable and powerful. And it is so much sexier than the A7!
Amon Amarth Rules They are both great cars, but here in Finland the starting price of an Audi A7 3.0 TDI 150 is about 77000€ and the starting price of a BMW 640D GC is 117000€. (Both are the cheapest models you can buy) And even the top of the line A7 3.0 TDI Biturbo is 95000€. So i have no idea why the BMW is that more expensive.
No its not, the previous one was hideous but this one is a vast improvement. Idk if you are serious or you are a troll. Even the Critics love the look of this car. I personaly think the new 3 series is hideous though.
TheRealBajan I agree. The 5 series looks better than the 3 series in my opinion. As Johnny said on the 320d Team Review video, the 3 series just looks a bit too squashed together.
I never understood the hybrid pricelevel as well. But a car journalist told me, that is was more a lifestyle choice, than an economic choice. Since people care about the environment and stuff
MrDeaz But they are really not very economical. So it’s really rather hypocrisy. Which is a bit of a synonym for certain lifestyles of today...

The 335d has a claimed combined economy of 49.6mpg
@@CL4SSiCS yeah but doesn’t sound like an in-line 6 petrol though
Thank god I got the 450h, did consider the 5 for a while
I prefer diesels to hybrids as a way to save gas
lol
Stibam elgrin ?
pbfloyd13 Oh, sorry. i though u where making a joke. Since Diesels dont run on gasoline. :)
Stibam elgrin He is only half wrong, Diesel and petrol/gasoline are both fractional distillates of petroleum fuel oil, there are a number of engines that can run on either, the difference only lies in the fractional amount of distillation.

both the x6 active hybrid and the hybrid 7 series were released before the active 5...
I think the Audi A6 looks more elegant & is nicer in the interior, but the 5-Series is definitely a very nice sports sedan.

Eh, the car is okay, I guess. I agree with Tiff about not being able to get excited about it.

A six minute review from Chris Harris would have extensively covered the dynamic impact of the hybrid system.
Forget the driver's side of the argument, some people do buy this car for daily uses. It's a tv show after all, you can't just thrash the car around a track without telling more than the car's dynamics.
It's super worth if you buy it used ;-D
Absolutely agree
incorrect! the 7 series hybrid was launched in 2010
twin scroll turbo. not twin turbo.
kinda anal comment
skunkroaster well it is quite a big difference
two twinscroll turbos
Stibam elgrin no, its only got one.
Correct, but they call it "Twin Power Turbo" so the video is still wrong.
That much more for that little mpg.

+Little Man thats the most uninformative review ever..
+Little Man wow... I can't believe you would take the time to make such a detailed reply...
whens the new one coming out
Really good car especially these days!
Dont know what BMW was thinking with the outside design, such a solid car but not that pretty. Still better than any American car made...ever, and I'm American.
+Tim Young I'm an American car.
+Tim Young Better how???
+Tim Young Because Tesla S P90 D, 2016 Viper ACR, but yeah a bunch are dog shit.
+Daniel Castaneda dont get me worng, the tesla is one of best cars the american automobile industrie has ever made ´but it has some serious practical issues inside. But you are right a modell s is still one of my favourite cars... but i think your seond example is more like a bad joke.
It's Vicki's birthday
Did he say he cant get excited about a hybrid. What about the Laferrari?
This was filmed a few years before the LaFerrari (or McLaren P1, Porsche 918 or BMW i8...) existed... back when everyone still considered "hybrid" to be synonymous with "Toyota Prius".
They are so enjoying.
yikes imagine getting into a crash and your car is flipped over and the sos call center cant accept your call

It’s a bloody BMW !

Or the 2 series active tourer or x1
They said twin turbo...
Who are these old people?
That’s 340bhp
German cars+Hybrid systems=never work out well.
The new bmw plug in hybrids are amazing.
lol that hybrid didnt even have m-sport exterior...
I don't really see the point of buying a 5-Series Hybrid that's designed to save fuel and then adding an option that makes it look like a M5.
sure, i get the point, but still, i wouldnt mind a good looking car with good running costs. That's why i'm considering an A7, good looking, and shouldnt be too expensive to have around :) Rather a 5 series hybrid than a prius
