Very nice job Bigsho65!! Clean and sturdy work!! Wish I had your skills. I've had my 2 Coolaroo sun shades for about 3 years now, and they are still going strong. I do take them down after Summer is over, I lightly hand wash off all the dust, dry them and stow them away until Summer returns. Best $$ I've spent at Costco.
I actually used a hole drill bit to drill holes straight through the two 4x4s, and then I used a lag bolt that I bought at Home Depot that were long enough. To pass through them. them.
Haha I’ve been there. So you didn’t end up putting those in concrete? I’m trying to avoid digging and want to use my existing 4x4 structural deck posts.
As a woman with next to zero experience using a drill (counter sunk a screw before I learned there were different speeds to the dang thing), your little McGyver move on screwing that eye bolt? in was pretty darn clever I have to say! Also, what happened to the other posts? Had 4 up, but in the end, only two remain....and what are plans for second screen? Will have to stay tuned for update now!
I took the other two post down for now because instead of putting up both shades we are going to start with one and see how much shade it give us before we put up the second shade.

These sun shades definitely impressed me, higher quality than I expected from Costco.
How did you "sister" the 4x4s to the existing deck? What are those bolts called that go thru almost 8" of wood?

@@bigshow65 I gotcha! I didn't know they made lag bolts that long lol
How have those new 4X4s been holding up. Have the exiting structural posts held up ok?
The 4x4’s are holding up fine, the deck on the other hand is in desperate need of a good sanding and re-staining.

Does it cool down the deck?
Oh my God yes!! It makes a huge difference in temperature both on the deck and inside the house.
Plant trees in your backyard
I want to but all the utility lines are underground and run all over my back yard. But maybe someday.
