I put in 4 flower beds last year using cardboard. What I did was I planted all my plants in the ground first, then I cut the cardboard around the plants and topped the cardboard with mulch. I'm a widow living on Social Security so I was trying to do it the most cost effective way so I didn't need to put soil down. So far it looks like all my perennials are coming back this year. Your flower beds look beautiful..💚
Yes, you can do that you totally can!! but if you want the raised bed look, you do have to add topsoil and mulch, I was married to Landscape contractor for 16 years lol I’ve learned quite a bit. But yes, actually the cardboard is better for the soil and it actually helps the earth worms and it completely is biodegradable so it’s actually better than using a landscape fabric in my opinion. But when you’re on a budget, it doesn’t matter if they’re raised or not I totally agree and I’m glad your perennials are coming back this year. That’s wonderful. Apparently the cardboard is working. 🌷🪴😊
Don't know your zone but when I lived in zone 6 I planted a border of Liriope. Worst mistake I ever made! It sent out suckers even underneath sidewalk. After 2 years of attempting to control that issue i gave up. Removed every bit and went with stacked rock border and planted annuals every spring. Each spring I switched plants to avoid boredom. Lol. Good luck with your endeavours. BTW a word from this gardener: never overplant perennials. Allow for mature growth as posted on can label. Those annual Sunpatiens are way too close. Instant planting to appear full is costly and wasteful. Overcrowding young plants results in spindly growth sacrificing the mounding habit. Not criticizing your first efforts; just offering bit of advice from this well-seasoned gardener of 50+ years.
You beat me to those recommendations!!! Spacing IS much too close. And the hydrangea will eventually overgrown all of the surrounding plantings, including the Liriope. I Love Liriope. I have it as a continuous border in one area of my front yard and as separate specimens in other areas in front and back yards.

I just used a hot tip of my soldering irion, put holes in the edging and then zip tied the rope lights to the top. I measured and installed before placing in the bed..

I used cardboard and planted fire chief arborvitae bushes, small specimen weeping norfolk pine, some mondo grass and some perennials. Soaked the cardboard then covered it all with 3 to 4 inches of mulch. It's going in the 3rd year and has worked out beautifully.
Maybe topping cardboard with mulch instead of soil keeps the weeds at bay better? When you mow the bad stuff doesn’t have as good of a chance of surviving? The issue is any further planting just using mulch you are not able to plant on top , you would have to dig? But the digging gets it down where the worms and good critters are? The good fungi… just some thoughts after watching countless videos of no dig gardens and the criticisms… etc
@gmaw23beauties37 the purpose was to kill the grass and weeds without having to use pesticides or hand dig them out. The cardboard smothers everything. Main thing is to wet the cardboard so it lays flatter. Worms will eventually eat the cardboard and turn it to mulch. I was able to plant right away cutting thru the cardboard to insert the plants. When planted added the mulch....soaked it down and it worked out beautifully.

A no dig edging will help with the soil running onto the driveway. Also, we have Lorirope planted on both sides of our sidewalk leading to our front porch steps, and it gets beautiful in August/September with purple spike fliwers. I only have 3 planted along a 7 foot walkway, and they cover the entire 7 feet. So I just wanted to let you know they do spread out. We leave them a lone all Fall/Winter and cut them down to the ground in March. They come back every year just as beautiful. They are a lonely, forgiving perennial.
As well, they self sow!! So be on the lookout!! I started with just 2 little plants….i now have 10 large plants!! (Granted that took a few years, but they do make new plants!!)
I was thinking the same thing..😬 those plants get HUGE…but maybe by then you’ll be ready to plant something new and transplant them…like just one in that little space with nothing else would have been more than enough…they get as big as that space there.
Love it! You have inspired me to make corner beds. People who are saying "too close," they are just plants. They can always be moved. The liriope will do its job and make new plants, which can be divided in a few years and moved to another bed.
Yea some edging would work well. I've noticed many neightbors in my neighborhood edge it with stone. Not pavers, just River Rock all around the edges (again, no digging)

In my country, we like privacy around our house. So you will not see at most houses big open lawns as you Americans has. 😊. We have tall green trees fences of any kind. Tall bushes or even a wood fence. 🇩🇰
JMO, 20:24 You will need some kind of border otherwise you will lose soil with every rainstorm, trust me! Especially with them being built up! They look great though! ❤
Ma'am, I hope this doesn't come off as rude; it's definitely not my intention. When referring to your new planting spaces, it's garden bed(s). Garden refers to your entire space as a whole. The different planting areas in the garden are garden beds. ❤ The liriope is going to haunt you til eternity! Ok, maybe a little dramatic.😂 But it'll definitely haunt you til you move out. 😁 If one takes on the never ending maintenance that is liriope, don't plant this many. Two would've given you a fighting chance. 😱 Good luck. You know It's not to late to reconsider and pull em out since you just planted them? Hint hint. The finished project looks lovely, though. Good job. 👏
The best place to plant liriope is under trees where regular grass won't grow. I've had some planted under our two magnolia trees for 10 plus years and it looks great. There it doesn't invade any other spaces as it would had I planted it along with other flowering plants, as you have, because it will spread and choke out your other plants.
Hmmmm I've had lirope as a border to a landscaped area for 10 yrs and the only thing high maintenance about mine is that I cut it down each fall? (We have COLD winters) I have the kind that does not spread. Mine is in full sun.
Less Monkey grass would have been better. The first year the beds will look great with that amount, but in 2-3 years you’ll need to dig them up and divide them. But at least you’ll have more plants to redistribute to other parts of your property.
There are two different kinds of liriope (Liriope spicata and Liriope muscari). The spicata is the kind that spreads out of control. The muscari is what I think is planted in this video and is a nice clumping variety. I think it will be beautiful and stay under control.
Greeting's from Ireland, My wife has no interest in gardening but tells me that our small front garden looks like a mini garden centre and I wouldn't blame her. At the moment there are fifty two pots of perennial's, six pot's of annual's on the windowsill's and four flower bed's. There is a glasshouse out in the back and a no dig veg garden. I'm thinking of creating no dig flower bed's out the back in autumn. I plan to split plants that have been in pots for a number of year's and plant them in the new bed's. I make my own compost in the three bay system and should have enough for both the veg and flower's.
Those fresh sidewalks! The next follow up video ‘ how to power wash our sidewalk stains’. But jokes aside, it will settle in eventually. I watched the whole thing. She’s very humble.
I can't wait to see how everything looks once it starts blooming! I need to get a kneeling pad like yours because of terrible arthritis and twisted knees. Thank you for this great video! I had completely given up on dreams of having even a little flower garden this year, but you've given me much hope!
The no dig method is more for planting a vegetable garden and you put mulch on top of the cardboard as it’s a natural weed barrier an for the plants you got to many you have to account for the mature size of the plant and space them out accordantly to the mature size of the plants Btw not trying to be rude

How wonderful! So happy you found me again! That's a nice gift!❤️
In my country, we like privacy around our house. So you will not see at most houses big open lawns as you Americans has. 😊. We have tall green trees fences of any kind. Tall bushes or even a wood fence. 🇩🇰
Does that go for the front and back yards? Meaning, is you entire house surrounded by tall bushes? Sounds beautiful.
Hi Anna 🌺. Well done .You did a wonderful work and you arranged the plants around the hydrangeas beautifully . Have agreat day .🌺🌻🌺
Thank you! You too!
Posthole diggers are life safers for digging holes when planting.
That and a huge drill bit on an electric or battery operated drill
The new gardens look great! Well done!
Thank you!
I literally just did this. I'm sick of pulling weeds so I put cardboard under the mulch🥰
You'll be pulling weeds again as soon as the cardboard breaks down
@@allborosnyc4544 perhaps, but not until next year. The mulch is like 6 inches thick.
@@jennip8585 You are right but if you do see weeds you could apply weed killer. A mix of vinegar and water or the commercial stuff to kill them.
Beautiful work
Wow the houses are really close together.
Then you would love Calif....I know when my neighbor uses the shower
@@fredmckibben6872 No Fred I wouldn’t love California. I love my 180 acres and country living with no close neighbors.
Not really compared to most developments.
Looks very pretty
Thank you!
No dig....then the first thing they did was dig😅😅😅😅😅
Lol
JMO, 20:24 You will need some kind of border otherwise you will lose soil with every rainstorm, trust me! Especially with them being built up! They look great though! ❤
Haven't yet. However, I do believe you are correct, something for sure!
Ma'am, I hope this doesn't come off as rude; it's definitely not my intention. When referring to your new planting spaces, it's garden bed(s). Garden refers to your entire space as a whole. The different planting areas in the garden are garden beds. ❤
The liriope is going to haunt you til eternity!
Less
Monkey grass would have been better.
Wow! So pretty! Love your knee holder also!
Thank you! I got it at Walmart. I linked it for y'all in the description
Very nice
Greetings from Oklahoma 7B!
I’m considering this same little project so appreciate you sharing this 🌳🌷🌳
Thank you, Lorraine you'll love it! ❤️
I began “no dig” gardening in my vegetable garden a couple of years ago. I wish I had started it decades ago! So so much easier 😊
Love it!!
Wowie! This is awesome! How wonderful to have enough plants to create a new garden and for free essentially! Congrats!
I thought it was no dig - looks like he has done some digging.,
It is going to be beautiful
Thank you!
All that soil would just wash away with one rain storm!
Those fresh sidewalks! The next follow up video ‘ how to power wash our sidewalk stains’. But jokes aside, it will settle in eventually. I watched the whole thing. She’s very humble.
Thanks for sharing. very nice. 👍🏾🤗 20:56
first time i've seen the no dig method.
I can't wait to see how everything looks once it starts blooming! I need to get a kneeling pad like yours because of terrible arthritis and twisted knees. Thank you for this great video! I had completely given up on dreams of having even a little flower garden this year, but you've given me much hope!
I'm so happy I could do that for you! Love my kneeling pad. The handles are much appreciated haha!
@@homeandgardenwithanna ❤
The no dig method is more for planting a vegetable garden and you put mulch on top of the cardboard as it’s a natural weed barrier an for the plants you got to many you have to account for the mature size of the plant and space them out accordantly to the mature size of the plants
Btw not trying to be rude
One good thing is as they grow she can remove plants and start another garden❤
I think you did it such a way Charles dowling would be proud. Great job!
I'm really looking forward to seeing your plants mature.
Me too! Thank you, Terry!
Beautiful neighborhood except there are zero trees! I couldn't live without trees ! Looks barren
There is a tree in every yard. Lol. They are dormant still.
Margie - anna i have been clearing grass for years to plant perennials and shrubs, so good luck and enjoy the journey!
It's a labor of love!
Well I don’t know how you NO dig you didn’t do your husband did all the digging 👍
There's these type in every "crowd'....Nothing better to do than find fault
🤪😂
What did you do that was constructive while watching the video....smh
This looks so pretty. I think I'll give this a try this year. Looking forward to gardening time!
You will love it! ❤️ It's the best time of year, isn't it?!
You literally dug out the edge and a hole. smh

Hi Anna! Love the new flower beds - hydrangeas are one of my favourite flowers to have in the garden. I've never seen a no dig garden, but I'm interested to try it out! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Elizabeth! Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers too!
I think it looks stunning and will add a dramatic affect to your entrance; exactly what you wanted it to do 🙂
Thank you!!
Hi Ana! Your front yard looks beautiful! Can’t wait to see when all the flowers lbloom🌺🌸
Thank you, Karina! ❤️
Hey Friend, Happy Friday. I’m always enjoying all of your gardening and outdoors videos, you have such a green thumb that I wish I had. 😢❤ I agree there’s always room for plants and flowers in your garden so it’s better to have more than you think you need than not enough. ❤🥰🦋
I'm an instant gratification type girl, lol! The fuller, the better!
Beds look beautiful. Here in Florida the impatients and grasses need some shade in the hot months- watching from Lake Wales, Florida
Not the sun patients. They will thrive in Florida heat and humidity! Get some!
Will love to see when it blooms thank you
Absolutely!
