halfthrottle just got new shoes on my VTX 1300. Is it bad I made the parts guy search for 45 minutes to see if he could find a set of 80-20's or even 90-10's for it? I had to settle for a decent set of "all" weather tires.
Loved this video! I am a 62 y-o South African female who has been on bikes for the past 41 years. I have driven ONLY BMW for 35 years of that. I had owned a R1200R for a short while, but traded her for good old fashioned machinery and none of the fancy buttons and things - the 2001 R1150R. Two years ago took my R1150 R on an 8 000+km trip through my country on back roads (paved),alone. I had fitted off-road tyres and was prepared to do a little 'off roading' where necessary. Most of all I loved the hum coming from them. Now, our paved road infrastructure in the outskirts of society are really, really not the best with potholes longer than the bike and about as deep as the belly pan. If not worse. On one paved road in the Cape province (where the roads are really good) the GPS showed the paved road continued all the way to my next destination. While doing 120km/h (our official top speed where allowed) the paved road just stopped. Bang! And I was airborne! In front and below lay a sand road with a pretty good filling of deep sand in places. I let go the throttle, kept hands and feet clear of the brakes and just kept going. The old lady landed with a solid thump of German precision and eventually coasted to a halt. Training on my GS1150 at a top riding academy had prepared me but my adrenaline was way above the danger level. Then I started laughing, albeit a little hysterically, and thanked my stars that I had sold my modern R1200R and reinvested in this old girl who was as solid as a rock. I did do some gravel/sand roads on her in places, which were mild, and she handled them beautifully. I guess I will not stop riding bikes - only BMW - until I need a walker to get on it. And hey, who knows, I may still be able to ride :)

98 f650, 02 r1150rt, 03 k1200rs, latest is k1100lt. They each have their strenghts.
Tyres are up and it runs? It's an adventure bike! I spoke to 2 lads who'd just done Scotland to the southern tip of Italy on 30 year old 350 MZ 2 strokes loaded to the gunnels they were and they were having the time of their lives on bikes that came in at less than 2 grand sterling for the pair and their camping gear. I have to admit I was jealous as hell, and on the lookout for one myself. One of the joys of growing up is getting to stop caring about what it looks like, and what others may think, but looking at things and thinking "aye that'll get it done"

At a classics race event in Belgium two years ago, our neighbour was English. He was on his MZ 350, on which he had done a 18K+ kilometer trip Mongolia - England. It only had a self made luggage box, carying everything for descent travelling and camping. Didn't have no issues at all on his trip. Great guy. Great adventure.

About the adventure you're 100% right, I have a neighbor, he is 45 years old, he owns a freaking scooter and he did the Romanian tour, on and off road with it !!!
Reminds me of the episode of On Two Wheels that Zach and Ari did where they road scooters up and down mountain trails.

I've owned my BMW R1150R since 2003 and have taken many enjoyable trips around the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain Region including Canada on the bike. I have a few of the rides documented on my TH-cam channel "Wheel Stories". I'm not wild about riding it in the dirt and gravel but have done so several times after taking a wrong turn or misinterpreting the type of road on the map. It's an excellent machine, good for touring and long distance rides, but with the roadster look and style which I prefer. Thanks for sharing.
When I saw the thumbnail pic, it really caught my attention. I had a 2010 R1200R (extremely similar profile) and of all the bikes I've owned through the years, it was my favorite. When I stopped to consider it being converted to a ADV, I shuddered to think what that would do to such an amazing road bike.
First off, the geometry of handlebars to seat to pegs, is completely off for such a thing. However, BMW makes a bolt on pull back riser kit. Something that I really needed to do. I'm not the tallest of guys, and with a few too many cheesecakes around my belt, I needed more of a straight up sitting position. It was a perfect mod. The only options my bike had, were crash bars, fog lights and heated grips. It had a tiny windscreen up front, but that was really all it needed to prevent the long distance fatigue that comes with a constant blast of air hitting you in the chest. When I bought it, it already had a set of side bags, and the correct rear rack if I wanted to add a removable factory top box (which I did).
BMW really hit it out of the park when they designed this bike. With the luggage off, it was a very capable and quick little bike for eating up the twists and turns, and the suspension kept everything smooth and predictable. I changed the stock BMW seat for a Corbin low seat, which was comfortable enough to keep you in the saddle all day long, for weeks on end.
With the luggage on, there was plenty enough room for a long distance touring bike. Something I have done for many years. I have had a Goldwing and a couple Electra Glides, and even they weren't as comfortable or as reliable as this little BMW. Churning out 500 mile days was nearly effortless. Clothes in the side bags. Things you needed more access to in the top box, and stuff you might need while riding in a small tank bag, it made the perfect touring bike for my smaller and a bit too rotund frame. With the center of gravity so low in the frame, the one time it ended up on it's side (wife bumped it with the jeep in the garage), picking it back up was actually very easy. If the bags were on and loaded, a quick turn of the key and lift of a lever, the bags came right off and the bike was rubber side down easily. Something I couldn't say for the Electra Glides.
But converting it into an Adventure Touring bike.... well, I just don't see it happening. The closest my R1200R ever got to this was the Al-Can highway in 2012. The quick response turns and swerves were enough to avoid the bowling ball sized rocks in the road, and thankfully the balance made it easy to stay upright when the road turned to gravel at the many wash outs. But I would have a hard time seeing it handling some of the more rough two tracks that it would need to even be considered an ADV. While it shared the same engine and suspension design as the GS, the travel and the ground clearance, simply isn't there. It would be a shame to try and change it, most likely ruining it's greatest capabilities as a pure road bike.
Anyway, love your channel, and looking at KTM's currently, to perhaps join my love of dirt biking, and long distance road touring together. As far as I can tell, KTM is the only one so far, that has the ability to snap on the luggage and take a 1000 mile road trip, or snap it off and tear up the countryside. If you have any other bikes you would recommend, I would love to give them a shot. Thanks for the vids. Bob

Great video and great storytelling Tyler. I'm now 62 and love to see younger guys appreciate what true motorcycling is all about...freedom on 2 wheels and being 'at one' with nature! It matters little what bike you're on, just maintain it properly and ride it where you want to go. I had a Suzi 750 'water buffalo' in the mid 70's and was never afraid to take it on Australian dirt roads...but not single track. Ride to your abilities and be respectful of you bike's limitations and you'll have a ball on any bike. Thanks again for a great video...you have one more subscriber. Best regards, Mitch
I had a 2002 R1150R and put many miles on it. It did plenty of adventure type riding quite well.
Still THE best dude on yt considering real understanding of adventure and pure love for riding.. Amount of happiness seen on ur face before, during and after ride.. Priceless.. For rest, there is a Mastercard.. :D

I own R1150R, same colour even ;) And, well, I have to agree with you 100%. It is what it is. The only thing - it's NOT powerful motorcycle :) It's heavy, and 85hp isn't exactly what I call a power rush. But yet, it's great, great bike. I love mine!

T, great ride and totally agree with mixing up some highway adventure riding. I have a Husaberg 450, KTM300 2 stroke, and I picked up a monster GL1500 " The Wing" as well. And while sitting in Pointe Noire Congo presently, I actually just bought over the web, a 1980 Honda Passport 70cc scooter for my RV rear bumper (milk, eggs & beer runs while camping). And I know I will have adventures on all of them as long as they have 2 wheels, go forward, and make me smile.

I recently purchased a 1985 K100 RT. LOVE IT ! When I was in my 20's I wanted the Yamaha XT 600 R on-off road bike. It didn't do ,on road or , off road very well. I'm 55 now and look back at all the trends and laugh. Yeah buddy , the trend is currently the adventure bike. Been there did that. Find a well loved old man's bike and continue to love it. Congratulations on your new bike. I had a 2004 R1150GS. Great road bike, but unless your riding with others it's really not a good idea to to ride off road, which of coarse is the way I ride most of the time. Couple things to be aware of is in the dirt the gearing is way to tall. That comes into play on long down hills which forces you to rely on your brakes to much. I had my brakes go out on Shaffer trail Moab. I had to turn off the engine and leave the clutch engaged to stop. Second the weight in sand can really get you stuck. Try muscling that bike around with gear on it. Lastly and for me the most dangerous is the power, It's to addictive. After blowing off a guy on a new Ducati sport bike on one of Maui's many winding roads. I realized I'm not capable of staying off the throttle. I'm to old for that stuff. I traded down to a CRF250 L. All that said Your going to love the R1150 especially for the trip to Alaska. Go with someone if you can because the things you'll see just need to be shared. I went with a friend from Austin to Ketchikan and back in1974, and had one of the best trips of my life. If you can take a couple of months to do it. If it's not about the journey what's the point? Love your attitude about riding! Adventure is a state of mind. Each bike I own gives me a different experience, a different thrill. I look forward to seeing how you like the girl when you get back from Alaska. Given the 'on road' to 'off road' ratio, I think it will be a good experience. If you were doing a ride from Morocco to South Africa, I'm sure you would choose a completely different bike. Let the adventure begin!

1150R is a great do it all bike. I ran one for 4 years and it was just as at home on a gravel trail as it was on tarmac. Old style BM black plastic panniers and a rack coped with camping gear. I replaced it with an new R1200RS......which is brutally efficient but lacks the character of the old 1150. However, I do have a 1980 rebuilt MZ TS250 two stroke that I’ll be treating to a trip to Spa for the Euro Classic in July next year (I suspect the MZ would carry right on to Vladivostok without too much trouble)

I put dual-sport tires and ProTaper bars on my R1100S and I've ridden it up fire breaks on the sides of mountains with loaded bags and my wife on the back. Ask your local old guy about how they managed to ride 600 lb rigid-framed Knucklehead Harleys with semi-knobby bias-ply tires across artillery-cratered battlefields in WW2. You'll suddenly have a newfound appreciation for how good we have it with modern motorcycles, ADV or otherwise. :-)

Very well made video. I'm just binge watching motorcycle videos to get hyped for my first bike, DRZ400SM. Unfortunately by the time I save up for it, it will be winter but that's not gonna stop me lol
You hit the nail right on the head!!! it all depends on you expectations and what you plan on riding. If your trip to Alaska will be mostly tarmac, with a little scenic off-pavement adventure thrown in, you have the right bike. Would a GS be better for that, probably so, but you also are not going to find a GS for under 5K (way, way less when you consider you got 2 bikes...). Obviously there are some some things you would want to do to the bike, as you mentioned. But overall, I think you are on the right track. I had an R1200GS for years, and took several trips to Colorado on it. It was pure pleasure riding from Texas to CO, and it was total awesomeness on the twisty roads in Colorado - was it fun off-road - not really, like you said, kind of stressful, but sitting back drinking a beer at the end of the day... it was pretty great to think I just rode a 500lb+ bike over the terrain I just road over. The RT is going to be better than the GS on the tarmac and twisties, and probably a little more stressful on the trails, but 90-95% of your trip will be right up the RT's ally.
Having said all that, I did end up trading my R1200GS and my DRZ for a KTM 690 Enduro R. I was looking for the unicorn... but whether it will be that unicorn or not remains to be determined. My personal opinion, I think you are doing the right thing with 1150, define your adventure, and enjoy the aspects of the bike you chose. A few easy mods and you hit a home run! Good luck and enjoy! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Interesting, non-naïve and down to earth point of view, which I like very much. There is a lot of build and parts quality in these BMW's from that period, which you can actually feel and enjoy riding. Then there's plenty functionality in terms of luggage possibilities. For less than half the price of a new budget bike, which feels budget as well, this is a great alternative. Sure it can't be a dual purpose bike like a new 12K Euro plus motorcycle designed for that purpose, but this BMW still is very good, as you say. Your video made me reset my mind towards modern so called "adventure bikes" definitively. And most of them still need a few thousend Euro's extra on upgrades to make them bullet proof and comfortable enough for descent and reliable long distance use. Not to forget: Too much modern comfort will kill basic motorcycle character.

I've been thinking of getting a DR650 to replace my beloved GS500 (as I can only afford the one), but honestly aside from the occasional dirt ride once every 2-3 weeks I'll be covering a LOT more miles on paved roads, be it to work, school or weekend trips with my dad who's riding a cruiser.
Might as well slap some engine guards and 80/20 tires, maybe a bash-plate on the GS and call it a day :)

Alaska trip is a dream of mine. I used to go to the Smokie mountains twice a year. But then I moved to south FL which is not a very safe place to ride. Ill get back on it one day. But until then ill watch your vids for my moto fix.
My R 1100 R is doing all sorts of adventures with me . I go on fire roads a lot and have never had a problem. Totally understand your point so much fun for so little money

I have almost the same Beemer, a bit smaller tho (but 850cc) and also plan to modify it to make it more offroad-friendly. It's way too road-oriented to do trails with joy, but still it can make a little GS just with swapping some parts like suspension, pegs and wheels and(or at least) tires!
Anyway, great vid, have a best luck with this machine, and your way to Alaska! I'd really like to see how you gonna tune the bike and how it will pay off.

I've been riding a 2004 R1150R Rockster edition for 2 years. And love it. I put an engine guard bar risers, hand guards... I'm getting a skid plate. Got two different windshield: a tall one for long rides and a shorty for city/commuting. It's a very good road bike and quite economical with 45mph on long trips. Got side cases and set up some dry bags when I go for a multi-day adventure ride and moto camping. I can ride gravel and dirt roads, but I don't take too many of these. Knowing that I can do it if I need, is enough for me (and many riders). Most GS riders don't do anything more adventurous than me. But they spent $25k+ on a bike for the same functionally as mine that I picked up second-hand for $3,500 with only 35,000 miles then. I have put 13,000 miles on it so far. Next Spring I will do a tour around the Rockies and maybe all the way to PNW (depending on time avail). This will be my test ride before my planned 2020 ride to AK.
You can ADV on one of those. Good tires and general engine armor/protection will get you what you need.

That’s a great bike for dirt roads when you put the right tires on it! Only downside is the wind blast is greater than a GS.

You can't fix that on the side of the road with rocks and sticks like a KLR... you will need GERMAN ROCKS AND STICKS and actual tools for this one Ryan. Ride safe in any event, we still love you.

My Dakar GS never sheared Frame bolts like my friends KLRs on the trails. But they're good bikes
As much as i really like my drz400s i must say that the best time i had on the saddle is when i owned a kawasaki zzr1200. (Sport touring bike)for many months, i used to go every monday on a 650 miles trip from vegas, towards Phoenix then yarnel congress Sedona Prescott all the way to flagstaff and back to vegas. Leaving early am coming back late evening. It was a fantastic time !

I have a NC700X, which I agree is a 90/10 bike, 70/30 with the right tires, but Ol' Crysis still gets some off-highway miles. Mine has a skid plate, many DIY guards, etc.. None of that makes up for the 17" cast wheels, low clearance, limited travel and weight (no matter how low the COG). But, it suits the kind of riding I do, and like you've said, that's really what choosing a bike is about.
A lot o videos of sport bikes on dirt but this was fun non the less.
Depending on the itinerary, that should be a great bike for your Alaska trip. I took my elderly GS 450S from 29 Palms, CA to Prudhoe Bay, using I15 to the border, the only offroad portions were on roads being repaired in Canada and the Dalton Highway North of Fairbanks. Hairy riding because of the long stretches of gravel. It would be hard to find more beautiful scenery, your home area excepted. Some stretches of the Dalton Highway were nerve-wracking to ride because of the really deep, wet gravel mixed with the snotty consistency of the Calcium Carbonate binder, which packs up in the fenders and wheels. The Alaska state bird was a factor whenever stopping north of the Atigun Pass, be prepared! I hope you have a riding buddy, it helps to have assistance when returning the bike to the upright position. 😋
My old 1150R was great. I had a couple of complaints but nothing serious. At freeway speeds, there was an engine vibration that made the mirrors useless. The wheels are not designed for off road use. Got a ding in the front rim from a rock once. Got major bug juice on me while my wife was bug free so I bought a wind screen. It felt too small for two people. Had great performance though. Loved the way it looked.

This past summer I did a 4400km trip across Canada on a 2001 R1150R. Even with all my camping gear, clothing and other supplies, the bike had enough grunt to get me through the rocky mountains. I'd have no problem doing another long haul on this girl again.

Nice bike. An air-cooled boxer twin should be really easy to work on. That's a definite plus. The only thing you'd need to do to turn that in to a scrambler is maybe get wire-spoke wheels, and while at it, get the type which can still use tubeless tires. That way if you bent a rim, you might have a better chance of banging it back out rather than breaking a cast rim. And since it will still be a 90/10 bike, get some 90/10 tires like Shinko 705s or something like that. They work great on pavement and will do okay in everything else but mud or deep sand. As far as it being an adventure, sure. The biggest adventure I ever took was on a Ural Patrol across Texas, up the mountains through New Mexico and Colorado to Wyoming, then east to Lake Michigan and then down through St. Louis to the San Antonio area. I intended to spend quite a bit of time off pavement in South Dakota and then to ride the TWAT in Wisconsin but the clutch went as soon as I got to Rapid City. So I spent a couple weeks on a couch in SD waiting for parts before setting out to complete the journey without the opportunity for going off road. It was 100% pavement but also 100% adventure.
I have the black version, single spark. It's so good. You should use some bar raiser to increase comfort and standing up capabilites. I don't do off-road with it. But for the rest is amazing. Panniers and a screen, and you can do touring like a boss. Strip it, and it's a naked, fast enough, characterful. O really love the bmw r 1150 r

I adventure toured the Mojave last year on an R1150Rockster. I found myself wishing it were a little more road capable, and a little more off-road capable. Had a wonderful time. I'm thinking of doing it again...

The first time I rode a motorcycle off-road (dirt roads), it was a Ninja 650R. You might have to be a little more careful in the soft stuff, but I bet it'll make any dirt road trip just fine.
I hear older BMWs get really expensive to fix. Luckily you know the person took care of all the necessary upkeep. My friend sold his K1300S due to a couple pricey repairs that he had to involve a dealer to get parts from Germany.

Thanks for this Video. I live in Southern Missouri, (the Ozarks) with lots of dirt roads. I had a Triumph Thunderbird LT. Nice bike but, she was like a fat lady in high heels on a frozen pond when it came to dirt roads. On a budget and was looking at the R1150R to fit. Also thought a few add on parts from a GS like skid plate and engine guards would work. Tires, I will go with something like the Michelin Anakee; not too aggressive, more like a flat track tire to fit my needs. If I was 20yrs younger I would join you on that Alaska run. LOL Thanks again for confirming what this old guy was thinking.
I have an 1150R for the road and a KLR for the dirt. Both were cheap (used), reliable and not too far from your price budget.

Interesting choice for somebody like you! I would agree though for touring the US and go to Alaska it's perfect. I rode an R1200GS from Anchorage to the arctic circle and it was an amazing experience, I can't way to go back.
Though I do think the arctic circle will be a bit of a tough trip for this R1150R. About 100 or so miles north of the most northern normal town on the Dalton HWY the road tires to dirt/gravel/mud, and that can prove a bit difficult for bikes like this. That being said, it's not a trail, it's just a haul road, tractor trailers go up/down this HWY all day, so it'll be a bit difficult for the R, but it'll do it I say.
On the other hand, the cylinders stick out far enough that the bike doesn't fall all the way horizontal making it easier to pick up. With some good tires and suspension setup, I think it could would well for 70/30 adv.
Both those bikes for $5K? Yes please! When I was shopping for an older GS, decent 1150s were in the 5-6K range. Taller bars, off-road oriented pegs, a set of K60s and you are well equipped for an Alaska trip. EDIT: how hard is it to put a 19" front wheel on it?
And my attitude is : All bikes are adventure bikes because every ride is an adventure =D

Howdy! Thank you for making this video. Strangely enough I bought myself an r1150r a year ago and absolutely love it! Yea it's not perfect but its charm and character more than make up for it. I have been, however been dreaming of taking it on fire trails to see the Sierra Mountains and Mendocino National Forest. I was thinking of installing the protection you suggested as well as a raised handlebar and nobby tires. My question to you is do you think the suspension needs to be replaced or upgraded to survive fire roads? I'm trying to budget out how much it would be to "scrambler-ify" my bike. I was thinking of getting the GS but prefer the R because I'm mostly using it on road (its my only vehicle). I cannot wait to hear your findings on your Alaska adventure! Keep us tuned!
Great vid as always mate. but... nah. If you are getting up into Alaska, you ARE going to see routs and stuff that you will want to explore to see more and enjoy more of the wilderness. The best adventure bike is one that is comfortable on any terrain, easily gobbling up miles, easily flicked around on steep twisties and easily soaking up rocks, ruts, sand and river crossings. i.e. any powerful dual sport (ktm 690, drz'z etc ... / africa twin (if you have the cash and can handle to huge weight) / bmw dakar 650 (great option for less money and lower weight) etc etc
In fact your modified kawa 350 would be perfect with the right sprockets, 50:50 wheels, a good seat, size racks and added touring lights. I use my modded klx 330 for huge trips, it cruises well at 130kmph and is perfect for exploring the rough areas. Would much rather a trip on one of these than the big heavy road only BM... (maybe when im 60 i'll have a different take ha!)
