- Meet Debbie Collier, a 59-year-old woman who lived in Athens, Georgia, with her 67-year-old
husband, Steve. The couple were married for nine years and had children from previous
relationships. Debbie had two children: Amanda Bearden (age 36) and Jeffrey Bearden (age 33). What came about in September 2022 was beyond anyone's imagination.
It was a wet and muggy day in Habersham county, Georgia, about an hour north of Athens, on Sunday, Sept 11, 2022, at 12:44 pm, when police officers found Debbie’s body.

Also the police: When someone goes missing, the first 48 hours are the most crucial.
That doesn’t exactly mean what you think and kinda makes you look stupid.
Police aren’t super hero’s and they aren’t obligated to actively defend or save human life (sadly)
The whole 48 hours concept refers to the fact that most of the 600,000+ missing person cases result in the person showing up within 48 hours. So essentially without clear evidence of danger there’s no logical reason to assume someone won’t be home shortly. The text message sounds suspicious given the context we have now right? Like that must be clear evidence of a crime right? It’s basically saying that she’s about to die and has been kidnapped…

Odd that without the bias of knowing what happened to Debbie it doesn’t say any of that or come across as explaining some panicked deadly situation at all.
This text could easily mean “hey I’m not going to be able to get off work early but the spare key to the house is in the blue flower pot” just a friendly text from mother to daughter updating her that she’s not going to be home in time and that she can let herself in. The arrogance of people in a true crime comment section is rivaled by none.

Hearing Amanda’s follow up phone call was so tragic. She felt helpless and wanted to do something and felt like LEO’s weren’t doing enough.

@@MrKBone93 I watched the whole video and I feel the same way. Just because she had a drug problem and fought with her mother, doesnt mean that she didnt love her. In fact it would only make her loss more painful, knowing the hurt you caused her and your fights. I pray she is able to over come her drug problems and live with the guilt for causing her mother pain. Apparently you haven't been touched by the opioid problem , they most likely fought about that and it wouldnt surprise me if the daughter was stealing her meds.

@@primesspct2 But you don't even know what her doc was - for all we know it could have been Adderall, Atavan, Xanax, Meth, Crack, bath salts, morphine, fent, X, mollies, ketamine, or any number of the research chemicals out there which include heavy, heavy novel benzos. People apparently even get addicted to weed although that's the exception certainly not the rule.

Maybe she had a psychotic episode, which can be very random. I haven't heard any mention to where her clothes were or if they were burnt as well
This particular death was definitely suspicious and I have extreme doubts of suicide being the cause as well... however, on occasion people who have friends and family that love/care about them, they sometimes attempt to make their death look like an accident, like a car crash or falling on a hike in order to preserve their image and to also protect the emotions of those who knew them. It's sad, they will care so much about other people, but don't know how to care for themselves anymore...

Recent Autopsy Reports recently released: It states that she was burnt way more than just some charring on her stomach. The police are either incredibly incompetent or they're trying to get Amanda and her boyfriend to slip up... bc only a drug addiction or complete idiot would think this looks like a suicide
They love to claim "suicide" when they don't have the manpower, funds or time to properly investigate an actual homicide. I hope the family gets a private investigator because this is very wrong and clearly a homicide. I am wishing this woman's loved ones and her family the best.

The most compelling thing in this tragic case is police incompetence and disdain for the citizens. As soon as they found out some members of the family had a police record they've wrapped up the case. Going from 'definitely murder' to suicide is beyond pathetic.
Then go be a cop and do work on cases. Or are you just gonna sit here and type your bullshit after watching a 25 minute video on the case?
I agree! They were horrible from the first moments to the last. They still probably wouldn’t have found her if her daughter hadn’t contacted the car rental company/Sirius XM (I assume she’s the one who did that).

The police in Georgia are notoriously corrupt. Both the police and the Georgia bureau of investigation let Matthew Boyton get away with MURDER. They are dirty as sin.
I live in Habersham where this is happening and I was so upset hearing it ruled a suicide! The GBI has begun investigating the case now so hopefully there will finally be justice 🙏🏼❤

The police dispatcher in this video was incredibly kind, caring and empathetic unlike so many who are rude, inept & in some cases ignorant. Kudos to this dispatcher!! Thank you Ma’am❤.

She obviously killed her self, why do you think she sent the last of her money to her daughter as she knew she was going to die, and then she bought all the stuff she was going to use to kill her self. There was also no one with her. She was only one in the van, obviously had some mental issues.
It seemed like a suicide to me. There are many cases where people commit suicide in elaborate ways in order to make it seem as if they were murdered. The fact that only the abdomen was burned and yet the woman was holding onto the tree, seems like suicide. The behaviour leading up to it is suicidal and the motive would be depression due to chronic pain. I guess you don't like with anything like that so can't imagine how death can seem like a better option.

I’m no expert, but I can say with some degree of confidence that if you asked 20 people to choose between several forms of death, Fire would be among the most unpopular methods.
And a woman committing suicide would not remove her clothing before dying. They just wouldn’t do that. This is not a suicide. Sounds like small town police don’t want to work the case. I agree to look at the parolee who had the car incident with her. He would have exchanged contact information if he wanted to handle it without police involvement.

It wouldn't be the first time someone has killed themselves by fire. There's one of these on a US crime show, I watch that many I can't remember which one. There were two or three teenage boys, found someone burning, got the police etc It's very unusual, but this person had a psychotic episode and although this women in the video, hasn't a history and most things like that happen a younger stage in life, it's not beyond possibility, but of course everything else has to be rules out first.
Yes, your comment brings to mind the jumpers in 911 when they chose to jump rather than die by fire.
I usually am about to keep my composure when listening to the 911 call with the daughter and I am in pieces. That girl is trying her hardest to keep so nice and understanding. My heart goes out to her. I just want to hug her so hard.
As a former 911 dispatcher, I would like to advise the public that when you call the police to file a missing persons report, unless it’s a child, the only thing the police do is input all pertinent info into the NCIC (National Criminal Information Center). So this way when that person gets pulled over or gets their info run on a traffic stop it will show they are reported missing.
People seem to think that as soon as a person gets reported missing the cops all go into search mode and the entire force is out looking for that person. As you have seen at the beginning of this particular case the officer took the report and went home, the detectives weren’t even in the office and per the 911 dispatcher they are on an ‘on call’ status and weren’t even on duty.
The only time they call out everyone is if it’s a child or an adult with exigent circumstances. There’s no search party and the police don’t go searching every nook and cranny looking for your loved one. It’s just not done that way. It broke my heart listening to the daughter asking the dispatcher what she should do and what have the police been doing to find her missing mother (which was absolutely nothing). The daughter asked if she should contact a private detective, personally the one thing I’ve learned is that there are 2 things people can do to light a fire under the arse of the police….1 is to contact the media, the 2nd is to use a private detective.
The police DO NOT like having an outside party involved and/or scrutinizing their every move.

I'm not too far in, but listening to her daughter on the phone with 911 just trying to find an update and still just being so sweet like she feels like she's bothering someone... ugh my heart breaks. I know that's how I would be too and it just churns my stomach. I can't even begin to imagine the panic and helplessness she must have felt.

I am glad you are covering this. I do not believe Debbie took her own life. Usually when someone wants to end their life they want it done fast, not in a torturous way imo. They need to reopen this case
Women are vain creatures and would not leave themselves undressed for the world to see. She did not kill herself in this vicious tortuous manner; someone else did.
They barely opened the original investigation!
If she had insurance and wanted to make sure her kids receive it, she would make it appear like a homicide rather than a suicide. Not too hard to conceive of to me.

It was a suicide. She took pills at the site and intended to use the tarp to inhale gases and kill herself. Fluid spilled on her shirt and caught fire, that's why she was naked. Her clothes were burned off. Sad all around.
While suicide is a deeply personal and private decision that others don’t understand- there are parts of this case like the recent autopsy results just released. This is a very rare way for anyone to commit suicide, especially women. Further, most women also are not undressed when they are found. Lastly, the hydrocodone and the money..hmmm street value on those? A lot. As a long term opiate patient as the autopsy mentioned - my personal thought that 4x the normal usage is nothing that would cause a significant change for Debbie. Tolerance jumps fast, and most patients tend to overtake their meds when they’ve been on it for a while and are experiencing considerable pain. What would that be? 4 pills instead of 1 or 2. She certainly wouldn’t be inebriated unless it was mixed with another respiratory inhibitor- not to mention an older woman looking to end her life would be able to do it considerably less violent if she took all her meds. Where’s the rest of her script? Very suspicious.

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I have really struggled to find self-immolation as a reasonable answer here but I suppose anything is possible when your mind reaches a diseased state. I work as an RN and sadly I've seen all extremes, when someone is in so much distress they may consider something horrific and drastic. That being said I also find the opioid tolerance theory to be pretty plausible like you said. Someone with chronic pain increasing their dose would not react as a sober user might. Frankly I find it hard to believe it would be enough to alter her mental state so severely AND allow her to tolerate 3rd degree burns. This story is so so horribly tragic. I hope Amanda and the family are finding peace with this however they can ❤
@@mariella2884 I value your opinion! It’s nice to be able to see a medical opinion given! While I don’t have medical training, I have a family of opiate addicts, hence my knowledge. I study as much as I can on criminology in hopes of returning and finishing my degree.
What do you think of the results showing no breakdown of the fire damage being breathed in? I thought that was strange since there is fire damage listed to I believe her windpipe. Self immolation is extreme and I agree that a desperate person will and can do extreme things, but it just doesn’t fit right. Not when she potentially could have used her whole prescription and maybe something else (I’m sure you know what I’m referring to) as an easier method. And the lack of clothing? Women just typically don’t do that.

I figured she took the pain meds to alleviate any pain she may end up feeling. She could’ve propped the log and set it on fire to where it would eventually fall on her. It’s possible she did this on her own. It’s possible she was killed. Her being in the Family Dollar store buying those items made the picture more clear to me.
I just read an article in the New York Post that said Dr Michal Baden reviewed the case, and that the autopsy showed she was burnt over 80% of her body, but that there was ZERO soot or carbon monoxide found in her airway, (despite part of her COD was from "inhalation of superheated gasses) which would indicate that, unless Collier had the ability to reanimate and set herself alight after dying from an overdose, someone else was there at the time of her death. It's also highly unlikely that whoever it was wasn't there just to be a good person.
Based on some of the ridiculous claims made by defense attorneys in court however, if/when LE ever finds a suspect and charges them, I can see a lawyer saying:
"Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I submit to you that my client made a deal to be there with Ms Collier as moral support during her "passing," so they could subsequently try their hand at crime scene analysis and crime scene cleanup, to help them decide on a career path... and if you don't believe that excuse, then he was just out hiking and came upon her remains with a note that said, my last wish is for whoever reads this note to burn my remains. Please and Thank You."

It's a mindf*ck, for sure. Also, what would be a fatal dose of opioids for a lot of folks, many times doesn't even phase a long term chronic pain patient. I believe the video hit the nail on the head when saying it'a very possible that though the levels of hydrocodone in Debbie's blood may have been fairly high, her having taken the drugs long term (for chronic back pain) means her tolerance was higher, and the high doses probably wouldn't have been fatal for her.
After reading your post, l am wondering if she was nodding off from an overdose, the plastic bag was on fire and she she inhaled those toxic fumes, the combination killed her, she died then fell onto the fire.But l don't understand her behaviour that led up to this. It's so sad for her and her family.I hope she is in peace.

If the daughter or a friend of the daughter posed as Debbie in the convenience store and Debbie was knocked out with a high dose of hydrocodone, Debbie could have been tied up and unconscious in the van while the imposter went inside to buy the items used at Debbie's demise. The daughter's boyfriend sounded so suspicious when I heard him say more than once that they were scared something similar would happen to them 'BECAUSE WE DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT' but the statement makes no logical sense -- and this was very early on before suspicions against them really mounted. It sounded like preemptive denial

Listening to the daughter on the phone with dispatch truly ripped my heart open. Amanda sounds like a loving,loyal, dedicated daughter just trying to get info about her mother. Amanda, I hope you find peace after this ordeal. You won’t find closure but hoping moving forward you find some kind of peace and normalcy considering what was done to your mother. My prayers for you and your loved ones
Have to agree with you about the phone call by daughter to dispatch. I have heard a hundred of these type of calls and unless I have lost all ability to sense a persons character....this young lady was absolutely distressed. It was unfortunate to find out the ugly past history of both she and her brother but that in itself is far from committing murder. The suicide part seems to me pretty far out there. Hope a descent investigation will finally come about. In the meantime like you mentioned...prayers for all the family members to have the strength needed to get through this difficult time.
My oldest son passed away over ten years ago and I get very angry when people talk about closure,it doesn’t exist.

He was ( I hate having to speak about him in the past tense) 53 years old cruising home from work when a lady travelling in the opposite direction needed to pick up her phone. My heart goes out to you and your family, may the love of your other family members help you adjust to your loss but your absolutely correct about the pain, I see it every time I visit my mother. Be strong and thank your Lord for the time your son was here and his legacy being his children or accomplishments. I’ll see to it my mom lights a candle at church in your son’s honour next week at church.
I've been following this case since the beginning. They had another autopsy done by A very well done individual and he also agrees that it was definitely not a suicide. Which I agree. None of it makes any sense. What this poor woman went through was just terrible and I hope she gets justice because she deserves it. Being left holding onto a tree on the side of the road with your abdomen burned 60 miles from home. She could have just stayed home in bed and taken that whole bottle of pills. The truth will come out and she will get justice!! God bless her and what she endured and may she rest peacefully now❤️
See, I remember this. Everyone in the news TH-cam comments was blaming the daughter without any info because she was an addict. As an addict myself (clean 3yrs) I understand the stigma, and there are people who would kill their moms to get right, but damn. At least let more
info come out first. Imagine how hard it is to stay sober after your mom has clearly been killed and people are blaming you online. It would break me! My heart breaks for her and the rest of the family. Rest In Peace

People blamed the daughter because she was coming out with different scenarios as to why her mom was killed. On top of that if her mom had time to text that her mom should have called 911 instead of texting her daughter.

I really hope the GBI reopened this case! Here are so many things not right. Like why did she send all her money to her daughter and not a dime to her son? Why did she say I love you and goodbye to her daughter, and not her son? Why when they found Debbie, her pocketbook was there with her when the day she went missing her daughter found it in Debbie's bedroom? Why if she was taking her own life would she say they aren't letting me go? If I was the GBI I would check the ping of the daughters and Debbie's cell phone at the time of the text. I'd check all messages on Debbie's cell phone. Something is so very wrong with this case! 💔🌹🤔

I have a powerful gift of discernment and when this first happened I watched several videos on it, and I live on the TN/GA line, so I watched several news reports on it. This was not a suicide. Somebody shot her, thought she was dead, wrapped her in the tarp, then threw her face down on the fire. Once the fire burned through the tarp and started burning her, the pain woke her up. The tarp had burned enough for her to be able to get out of it. After that there are 3 scenarios that would explain how she ended up down the bank holding a tree in her hand. The perp(s )could have still been there and either she fought and got tossed down, or she jumped up and ran in a panic, probably looking back at the perp(s) and fell down it as a result. If the perp(s) had already left she could have been disoriented and/or confused, on top of being in a state of panic. She may have broke into a run as she came up out of the fire, and in her state of mind fell down it. She tumbled down the hill regardless of which of those is correct, and was still alive when she came to a stop. She either grabbed the tree trying to get up and died from her injuries, or the perp(s) saw she was still alive and went down to finish her off. If she was asphyxiated; then she most likely would have been reaching for anything that might help her get away. She grab the tree and tried pulling away as she died.
These police and dispatchers should be held criminally responsible. They did literally nothing but brush it off.

it could have been that when she died her body came a bit close to the fire or whatever and got burnt after the fact, she might already have been dead at that point no?
I heard of people high on PCP do crazy stuff like stab themselves in the heart or light themselves on fire. But I highly doubt this woman took her own life in this way. The transfer of money to her daughter is curious. And it appears she may have been concerned about animals left alone in the home. I hope her case will be reopened and investigated again. Her family deserves answers.

A girl from my work wrote a suicide letter and put it in her work locker saying she felt like she was a failure in life. She seemed really happy and talkative on the staff bus to the staff car park at 3 am and then she drove her car to an empty lot. She poured petrol all over her car and herself. Got onto the floor in the back and jammed her legs in so it wouldn’t be easy for her to back out. She set herself alight. I was mortified when I first was told. Wished I knew she was so depressed and wondered how much you must hate yourself to do this kind of thing. Her happiness on the bus must of been that she knew the end was near. She was around 19 or 20. It’s hard to wrap your head around.

That case drives me nuts. Someone recreated the angle of the stab wounds to the back of her head,using a woman of the same height,and she could get her arm at that angle but it was such an odd angle,she couldn't make a stabbing motion. How they could leave that as a suicide is insane to me.

when you are on fire you are in fight or flight mode no matter how suicidal you are you will try to stop the pain or use your reflexes to stop falls ect. now i dont think she killed herself but it would 100% normal for her to grab a branch while frailing around on fire.

A friend of mine committed suicide by jumping to train tracks off a bridge. In the last seconds, he tried to crawl out of the way despite snapping both of his legs.

This happened very close to my town and it was huge. Everyone local believed the daughter and her boyfriend had something to do with it.. and I believe that too because she came up with different scenarios about her mother’s death that she was offering to the police and on top of that, if her mom had enough time to text that her mom had enough time to call 911, so why wouldn’t she call 911 instead of taking the time to text her daughter? It’s definitely fishy because her mother didn’t disappear until her daughter and her daughters boyfriend moved back to Georgia from Maine.

Amanda's 911 calls just break my heart. The dispatchers that talked to Amanda and Debbie's sister are frustratingly dense and ineffective. After watching a lot of videos about missing people where their loved ones call 911 to get help it's like 9 out of 10 of them have terrible dispatchers. The call from the social worker who was assigned to the children of Josh Powell might be the worst I have ever heard. 911 dispatchers around the country need a huge over hall.

Why didn't they investigate the parolee who told Debbie not to report him as the driver of the truck from which the can of paint hit her car ? He said there's a stipulation in his parole that he's not allowed to drive. Why didn't we hear everything about who that parole e is and the whereabouts of him and anyone associated with him. I don't believe the suicide conclusion for 1 second. That's the Sheriffs Dept. taking revenge on her son for criticizing them by speaking up publicly. They know it's a murder but they shut him down by showing they have all the power to investigate or close a case any way they choose. I'm still shocked we didn't hear anything at all about that parolee and if Debbie had reported him as the driver of the truck ? Did I miss that part ? Does Anyone out there know ? However, I can’t make my mind up whether she did actually commit suicide as the scene wasn’t explained properly, nor was there any mention of any other evidence like footprints, DNA in the car, proof of her being alone or with someone in the car, etc. The video does a poor job of explaining exactly what was or wasn’t at the scene, apart from the bag and a tarp.

Amanda is definitely suspicious. With the timing, her previous convictions, har fighting, a concerning social circle, a possible drug problem being things that can be used against her. Not only that but the fact that she was the only one getting contacted, the Venmo and the most damming for me: her repeated contacts with the police and rushing to the crime scene . We often see that a perpetrator will keep as close to the case as possible. The entire time I just sat there like oh,,, yeah she did it.

I remember this case so well, and was looking forward to finding out who really killed her. I was shocked when they ruled it a suicide, and almost as shocked to hear that conclusion hadn’t changed. There’s no way she killed herself like that.

The internet, media and police tore this family apart and caused so much extra stress, torment and grief when it wasn't needed. I remember, at the time, seeing a woman's youtube video about this case. Over 100,000 of her subs, and her, outright saying the daughter 'took out' her own mother! I consume true crime but that disgusted me. I remember leaving a comment saying 'You better be right about what you're accusing this young girl of doing to her mother, cos right now, if you're not, what you're doing is disgusting.' They carried on and didn't even apologise when it came out she took her own life. I feel awful for this family.

I think it was quite clear in the 911 calls that Amanda was very worried about her mother and tried everything to help find her. That finger pointing of the neighbours is disgusting.
I remember this , I live in Athens (born and raised) the store she was last at isn’t far from where I live at all , but I didn’t know about this until a couple days later …. Athens isn’t really big like people seem to think so her story was spreading like a wildfire and of course different stories were told . It just makes no sense at all , especially w/ the circumstances . It’s sad and they’re in my prayers . 💔💔

If my mother was "missing" or not responding to me for a few hours I would definitely not be as concerned or even close to hysterical and would assume she was okay, just busy. 600,000 missing persons reports filed every year in the US im sure plenty of the people who do make it home have a different opinion.
But I suppose you’re right we could fire them all and only hire top notch grade A detectives. The only problem is that unfortunately that would mean significantly more cases would go unsolved because there’s simply not enough police as it is so limiting it to only the elite team would mean 100-150 police per state let’s say.
Now with the obvious flaw in your argument you should also remover that personal safety is a personal responsibility and at best the police are here to MAYBE punish your killer but almost never stop you from being killed.

It widely known most woman choose the least painful way possible. Less than 1% of all suicides are by self-immolation and the majority of those are done in protest for something. There are way to many questions for this to be ruled suicide.

Why tell her daughter where the key to the house was? (her husband would have a key to the house)

There are many many more questions that suicide just do not make sense. It almost seems like the police just wanted the case to go away.
They need to pass a law that allows law enforcement to immediately open up a missing persons report on any adult. Like when you get your license or renew it, they ask the consenting adult if you go missing can the police go ahead and assume you're missing??
This is one of the better ideas for such a thing but still I think people just assume the police have nothing going on then a case drops and they can somehow be everywhere at once investigating everyone. A quick google search will tell you that 600,000 people are reported missing annually (most found shortly after or return home and it called off)
In the same time period that gabby petito was seemingly the only person anyone cared about approximately 50,000 people went missing. How many other names are you familiar with from that time period?

- he was the last person see her
-he lied about her purse. He said she left it home but then it was found with her.
- Look at how she’s dressed. Did Debbie look the type of woman who wore GA bulldog attire often or did she look like she was about to go to a football game? Kinda sus that the husband was working that same game and got off right at 4 (supposedly) when the game started
-was it supposed to rain the day of the football game? That would explain the rain jacket, if she planned on going to the football game
-the husband had access to multiple cars that initially wouldn’t be traced back to him and no one he knew would really think twice about seeing him in a car that wasn’t his due to his occupation.
-I think he’s trying to frame the daughter by sending that weird message and then the money. He was her husband, he would’ve probably had access to her account or they had a joint account.
- is there video of him working all day? He probably would have plenty of time and opportunity to leave for a while. Just like he could have easily made up an excuse for him to leave work early

The alibi placement in the 911 call was the biggest red flag of them all. No one asked you! Why did you have to add that in there if you’re not trying to cover your ass from the get go!? I agree with you 100%, I didn't see anything about him being investigated at all, just wondering if they cleared him without checking to ensure he was at work all day. He was the first person I thought might have done it. The venmo transfer seems like a really obvious attempt at framing the daughter, why did they not investigate that possibility?

It is a bizarre case but I do think suicide is the most likely based on the evidence presented. The video of her purchasing the tools for her own death is pretty damning. If she were someone’s captive they would never let her go alone. Also, the fact that she buys those supplies the day of the death suggests this wasn’t premeditated and a snap decision which is consistent with both suicide and mental illness. There’s no evidence of anyone else being involved and there is no motive for anyone else either that we know of. Either she was very upset about something happening at that time or she was suffering from depression or mental illness. That’s my own best take.
I have always thought that car accident Debbie had is the key. Not maybe the people in the accident necessarily, but rather, that it was used to lure her. It would be more clear if Debbie had said something if someone was trying to extort her and her behavior wasn’t so strange prior to her passing. Strange
