Making a custom case for an eGPU and mini pc together

  • Recently I paired a Gigabyte Brix Pro mini pc and a GTX 1060 over a mini pci express connection through an EXP GDC adapter. It performed exceptionally well. You can see the video of the set-up, game testing and benchmarking here: • External GPU - GTX 106...
I decided the existing enclosure needed some improvement and with a computer this small I figured I could put the whole lot in a case together.
It is now finished (just about) and looking really great. The case is built from a cheap $8 perspex case which was changed around a fair amount and spray painted.
The video card mounts out of the side of this case and fits nicely. Unfortunately the power cable for the video card still goes in vertically which is not ideal but could be fixed by using a riser cable to mount the egpu adapter facing out the rear.
The motherboard, msata ssd, and other components from the brix pro are really quite compact. Especially as this has a quad core i5 desktop cpu.
Two hinges were designed and 3D printed to make the components easily accessible. These work well and can hold the lid upright if working on the inside components.
The power button was a real victory of lazy design. I didn’t feel like wiring a new switch so instead printed this button. It neatly fits around the heat sink and sits perfectly in the hexagonal holes. Works great.
No issues with port access at the back and I reused the metal back plate from inside the original case.
I figure this is about one of the best size to power ratios you can currently build yourself outside of buying expensive pre-built mini gaming machines like the zotac magnus series.

dude i love what you did with your case i have a very similar setup, except i had an extra 600w silverstone psu lying around and the gigabyte 1070 mini itx oc edition style card with rgb lighting wrapped along the inside of the case. they both fit snuggly inside the same honeycombed crystal clear case you have, and it looks amazing. But i have to give you props on your 3d printed hinges...... sheer genius bro. i love the fact that you have yours laid down where as mine is upright. great job once again my brother keep up the great work. gave you a like and a subscribe as well

Great video, really nice to watch. I got my gdc adapter (8.4D) today for 34$ on Ali, can't wait to check it out on my 2011 Toshiba laptop (i7 2630qm), in the meantime i'll upgrade it from 4gb to 8gb of ddr3 (1333mhz), an ssd and a beefy hdd. I'll hook it up to an rx480 8gb i got for 150$. Can't wait to see if the results are convincing!!

these cases for epus with nuc or skull canyon cpus need to be made mainstream. who ever first to market would corner the market for this up and coming form factor config thats inevitiblely going to embraced by performance demanding minmalist form enthusiasts.

Im more in tuned with better cooling and aesthetics and this gives me ideas for extra fans.

    Hi Stu, Great video.
I'm interested in using a CNC/laser cutter to cut my own case but, more relevantly to what you're doing here, I was wondering what base parts you might recommend if I was going to try and use a Kaby Lake CPU (i5 7600k) and a GTX 1080. I was also considering using the gigabyte NUC GB-BKi3HA-7100 as a base, but the eGPU stuff that you've mentioned is brand new to me.
    Liked and subscribed :)

Hi Stu, neat set up. I am also trying to use the 1060 but with a laptop running Windows 10. Not sure if you have any advise but I am having problem with the Nvidia Driver Installation utility. While checking for hardware, it returns with no compatible hardware found. Not sure how to proceed. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for your advise. I am getting error 43 when I ask Windows to auto search and install a driver for the video card. After that I downloaded the driver directly from Nvidia and got the no compatible hardware found while using the Nvidia installer. I will go check out the egpu.io. Thanks again.

don't you meet the error 43 problem that NVIDIA ban the EXP GDC with 10xx series?

This works for me on a 1060 on latest drivers and didn't need to mod the driver.

you should take a look at smallformfactor forum, those guys' builds have extreme power to size ratios e.g. 1080ti in 4L boxes etc
