Thanks for the info Doc.... Ive just seen my surgeon today with my MRI result. Everything is perfect, except a very small tear on my left Labrum at 2'clock. So that explain the pinch I feel when I lift heavy stuff or I put a shirt on. He said unlike my right one who was heavily damaged, the left doesnt need surgery this time cause its going to create more problems and unnecessary damage. I fought him a lil bit on it because I wanted to go back lifthing weights and boxing as fast as possible. He said the best you can do is find a physio and do some strengthening to protect the Labrum. I was disappointed because surgery saved my right Labrum and I wanted the same for my left. Lets hope those exercices are going to help.

It's been 7 month post labrum surgery but still not 100% heal. Got this video on internet today after months of research for proper rehabilitation of my shoulder. Glad to have this video. Thank you so much 👍
Dr. Jo, are shoulder labrum rehab exercises contraindicated if there is a rotator cuff issue present as well? What about visa versa? Are RC exercises contraindicated for labrum issues?
The labrum itself won't heal, but just like other tears, you can strengthen and stretch the muscles around the joint to make it strong and stable to protect the tear.
I have a slap tear that was extremely painful. I could not lift my arm up at all. I did these exercises and am pretty close to pain free and my range of motion is getting close to 100 These exercises are now part of my pre workout routine. Thank you.
I have had bicep pain for 3 years now. My mri looked fine. I had a Ct arthrogram. It showed a superior labral tear. My surgeon says time for surgery since I have failed p t and injections
I've been diagnosed with a SLAP tear and have been scheduled for surgery in 4 weeks. Are these exercises more effective pre- or post-surgery? It's probably too late to see effective relief before my scheduled date.
Thank you so much Iv lived with this for years had a scan they said it’s torn but doesn’t need surgery I can’t even put a T-shirt on without pain! I think this is why my sleep has been trash I keep waking up after a few hours consistently.. I’m really starting to think it’s my shoulder pain while I sleep 🤨 thank you so much I’m doing this right now hopefully 🙏 if I do these every every day I should start to feel relief
You're welcome. Hopefully they will help, but unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
very nice and simple way to explain to make a common man understand, well done ma"m. I had a shoulder tendonitis tear surgery 4 months back. I am on a rehab. Can i do these exercises. Moreover i cant touch my back with the operated arm as i can do with my unoperated arm . Please advice.
Thanks so much for this! I had ulnar nerve surgery a few months ago and I’m doing strength training again now. I’m going to incorporate some of these as well because from time to time my shoulder is sore from working etc. thanks I appreciate it
Dr. Jo, Thanks so much for all you do and your attention to safe and detailed instructions. Is it possible for the Labrum to heal in some cases? I've heard it usually needs surgical repair. If not likely to heal, then is the strength training the thing that will stabilize the joint to possibly avoid surgery that way?
You're welcome, and thanks. Unfortunately, a labrum cannot heal on its own. You can strengthen the muscles around it, and often do pretty well without surgery depending on how big the tear is and where on the labrum it is. So it's definitely worth trying a few months of consistent therapy to see if you get some relief.
I’ve had a slap tear(I think on both but only one diagnosed)) for over a decade. Started going to school instead of working hard labor and it has been the worst for my shoulders. I just don’t want to get “chopped up” until it’s absolutely necessary. I hope I don’t face underlying problems forming because of my waiting to get surgery
Dr. Jo I have a question I am an amateur baseball pitcher and threw at about 70 mph. And as I said right before, i really appreciate your video. Question: If pain becomes completely relieved, Will it be proper to do this excercise with more intensive therabands?
Dear Dr Joe, thank you soooo much! These exercises have worked wonders for me..I'm back playing tennis and have very little referred pain down my forearm now since starting the routine 1 month ago. I have been doing them religiously each day and it has helped me considerably at work as my job is moderately physical. Although I do the entire routine, I have found the swiss ball stretch to be very effective in releasing the tension caused by shoulder pain. Thank you
I have had some bad pain in my shoulder during softball season when I throw. I spoke to an orthopedic surgeon I know and he said it sounds like it could be a tear on my labrum, or possibly not that severe. I do not want to stop playing softball, but definitely need to see some improvement in my shoulder. In your opinion, doing these twice a day, how long should it be before I feel positive results? Should I stop playing softball until the pain is gone?
hey, Dr. Jo! future PTA here, and I can't thank you enough for your videos! question with the pendulums; I understand you want to open up that joint space with the pendulums, but will the rotator cuff muscles not want to suck the humeral head back into the glenoid fossa if your pendulums become too big?... kinda defeating the purpose of the exercise? thanks in advance for your response, and I can't thank you enough for doing what you do!
You're welcome! It shouldn't unless you are using an extremely large weight with the pendulums. Just using gravity or a small 1-2 pound weight isn't enough to cause that response. Good luck!
@@AskDoctorJo Injured my shoulder playing basketball years ago. Blocking motion applying force down on the ball as opponent went up with the ball which resulted in a simultaneous upward counter-force. Since the acute injury, overhead throws (football or baseball) take 15 mins of warm-up before really being able to rip. A physician diagnosed a slap tear (no MRI) years ago. My experience has been the area can strengthen on its own (minimal rehab) and can revert back to square 1 anytime after overhead throw or similar force as original injury. No problem just build it back up. About a month ago I woke up and it reverted from sleep. I'm able to stay active (mountain-biking, basketball, football, skiing) but moving on and off this shoulder while sleeping sucks. I plan to start focused exercises as described and am interested in any suggestions based on what I've described. Perhaps I'll consider a surgical repair one day.
You are amazing!! I've got to try these!!! Tfs! To everyone reading this, Jesus loves you. Edit: I had to come back to tell you that these exercises helped so much!!! Thank you!!! My shoulder feels so much more stable. I will attempt to do these daily.
Hi Dr. Jo.... Have a slap tear 1 to my right shoulder per ortho doctor and arthoscopy MRI. I am currently in physical theraphy, taking ibuprofen and using ice packs. I have a lot of discomfort to my shoulders, scapula, neck , axilla and sometimes the breast area. I am a senior with health issues and on medications. Thank you in advance for the video, I will start using today, maybe it will help me. I am so tired of pain and discomfort.
I have a question please, when should I start doing stretching and exercises for the slap tear? I don't need surgery the doctor said but of course I need rest. So how much rest is required before excersising? Thank you
Didn't think that when I went to pt and the doctor gave me these exercises that they would work so I didn't do them. He even put me in a sling but I didn't wear it. It wasn't until after I was released from pt that I received an MRI but it isn't conclusive it is a tear. It only mentions that it is possibly a slap tear but inconclusive. Dry needling helped tremendously but wasn't the cure all and they thought I was getting addicted to it. Lol. Now I am going to do them and see if I have some relief. I just wished he had explained to me what they did. Thanks for this video from someone who has recovered. In the future I may end up with surgery because it sucks when you are a bodybuilder and can't lift properly due to shoulder pain.
Hello Dr. Jo, Thanks for the helpful video! I am a 35 yo male that was recently diagnosed with a Type II Slap tear, not due to any acute injury. I have been considering surgery, but have heard some horror stories about the operation (i.e. problems.pain worse after surgery, second surgeries in some cases). I saw from the comments that you did have surgery for your tear (in addition to other things) and was wondering if you had any feedback on the long term outcomes of SLAP tear repair for yourself and any clients? Thanks in advance for any information!
You're welcome! It's pretty different case to case, so it's hard to say since I can't evaluate you. But in general, if conservative treatment doesn't help, it's worth talking to a surgeon about your options. I am pretty sure I have a tear on my left shoulder too, but it doesn't bother me too often as long as I do maintenance physical therapy for it. I would definitely try going to physical therapy first if you haven't yet.
I was recently diagnosed I have slap tear 1..On my shoulder...If I excise you think it help me to recover my shoulder? So I can go back to playing pickleball?
Hi doctor Jo... How long I need to wait to start slap excise? Because my shoulder been hurt for 3 months..I just get my mri.. Yesterday.. But I went to chiropractor for 2 month.. Finally I get tired so I decided get my mri.. I just to recovery so I can play.. No surgery.. That all please let me know..
Hi Dr. Jo! Thank you for this helpful video! I was diagnosed with a posterior inferior labrum tear last year. I stopped lifting weights since then, but would like to get back into it. Athletic trainers have told me I can continue to lift normally; just gradually increase weight and no overhead movements. However, whenever I do forward/lateral shoulder raises (even without weight), I feel pain in the front of my shoulder. Will continuing to lift worsen this tear, and are there specific exercises to stay away from, like bench press? Also, is a weakness-type feeling down my arm related? Thanks a lot for the help!
You're welcome! Usually you can get back into lifting, but it really depends on how big the tear is. If your doctor didn't think it was big enough to repair, it should be okay. However, I really don't know for sure without getting to evaluate you in person. Did you go to any physical therapy when it first happened?
Thanks for the response! Yes I did do physical therapy for a few weeks after the diagnosis, but my shoulder started to hurt from it. The physical therapist said that was "normal" to feel a weakness type pain, but I decided to stop. Most of the therapy exercises consisted of cables. Do you think it'd be ok to do bench press and curls, and re-continue the PT?
I work in physical industry. I have: Glenoid chondromalacia of right shoulder 2. Arthrosis of right acromioclavicular joint 3. Osteolysis of acromial end of right clavicle 4. Type 2 superior labrum extending from anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesion of right shoulder, initial encounter PT has helped but I've been on light duty. Orthos have told me it's up to me but because of age 34 I might be smart to do the surgery now because of line of work. Thoughts?
I have a slap 3 tear with minimal separation as reported from MRI doctor. About two years out of a shoulder recon due to repetitive dislocation and complete tear of a ligament so really don't want to get surgery again. is this slap 3 tear repairable using methods in this video
No, strengthening the muscles around it to protect the area often helps, and some people can go without surgery, but it will have to be something you do consistently as a maintenance program.
Hello I have a slap tear and shoulder impingement. How many days a week do you do these excercises and can I combine your slap video and shoulder impingement video excercises together? Thanks so much great videos!
Thank you Dr Jo, your videos have helped me so much! I...have a slap tear but I dont feel much pain, just some instability during certain movements and exercises. I will try these out, I really dont want surgery. Did you need surgery for your slap tear?
You're welcome. I had to have surgery on one side, but it was more because I also had a clavicle fracture that never healed, so they had to take out a big piece of bone to open up the space. I am pretty sure I have a tear on the other side as well, but I have done fine with conservative treatment.
Just had an MRI and it shows a tear from 12 o'clock to 1 with separation back to 9oclock. I'm new to this, how bad is my injury. I'm looking to have surgery anyways, I'm trying to get into the fire service and can't viably have a 30 year career like this. Also, like the vid. Very informative. And I actually chuckled when you knocked the chair with the dumbbell
Thanks :-) Sounds like you are definitely a candidate for surgery. If you can, you should try to go to some physical therapy before your surgery. The stronger and more flexible it is before the surgery, the better your recovery will be. Good luck.
yeah i’m 17 w a pretty messed up shoulder popped out over 50 times no doctor checkup yet, But i did notice in the beginning my throwing decreased tremendously; immediately.
Does these exercises help fix the tear as well or do we have to get the surgery? I have slap tear and doctor told to have surgery. Just wondering if these exercise are just for strengthening or for fixing the tear?
Jo, love the videos! I have broken down, after months of PT and a 2nd opinion; decided to do the surgery option. Can you do a video on Pre-Op exercise to help in a Post-Op recovery?
These exercises are really helpful thank you. Just one question though - on the 3 band exercises you do (in front, 45 degrees and behind) is there any problem with using a long band, looping under both feet and then both arms at the same time rather than one at a time? At the moment I’m doing left then right but figured I could save time if I did simultaneously?
GREAT video, thank you. During the pendulum, I felt the head of the humerous pull down slightly but then, with arm dangling, I had a pulling sensation (like a rubber band) from the top/posterior of the humerous across the top and back of the scapulas - I think it was the suprastinatus tendon? It was not too painful but left me with a feeling of tightness across the top of the scapula. Any thoughts?
If you don't know what your diagnosis is, it might make it worse if you try to push through the pain. I do have some other videos that are for passive range of motion that might be a little less painful.
Partial tear of the anteroinferior labrum with adjacent cartilage injury, representing gleno-labral articular disruption (GLAD). I got my results back . Can these excersies help ❤
Question just got my MRI results today and I have a slap tear.Csn that cause the pain I’ve been feeling in my neck and back of shoulder? Meaning can it spread
IMPRESSION: MRI of the left shoulder demonstrates: 1. Moderate grade partial-thickness articular surface tear of the anterior supraspinatus tendon at the footprint. 2. Mild to moderate rotator cuff and biceps tendinosis. 3. Moderate acromioclavicular joint arthrosis. Ossification of the dorsal AC joint capsule. 4. Tear of the superior and posterior superior labrum. Separate tear of the anterior inferior and inferior labrum. Paralabral cyst along the inferior and posterior inferior glenoid. 5. Mild glenohumeral joint arthrosis. Would these exercises be good to help me recover without getting surgery? Or would any of these be counterproductive? My doctor gave me the Cortizone shot to help with the chronic pain and inflammation and said I should attempt conservative PT for the next three months before we think about surgery, but I’m just not quite sure which exercises are best for labral tears like mine prior to surgery or to prevent surgery
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
I've had 3 shoulder dislocations and on the 3rd, 2 years ago, my labrum was torn and surgery was recommended. Unfortunately I had other pressing life issues that I couldn't be out for a few months so will these exercises still help me today from preventing another dislocation by strengthening the stabilizers or do you have any other videos that are more for my problem? Thanks
Unfortunately, I don't know if these will help or not since I can't evaluate you. I also have one for shoulder stability that might help, but going to see a physical therapist in person would be the best option.
I have finally been diagnosed with a slap tear based on the O’Brien’s Test after having painful symptoms that have lasted more than 2 years (even after 3 cortisone/steroid shots and lots of physical therapy). When I have done physical therapy, I didn’t know to I had a slap tear and it all just seemed like it wasn’t really helping my pain go away. I have a great range of motion and I lift at the gym (babying my left shoulder of course) so I can live with it, but the pain is SOO bad. Will these exercises do you think still help alleviate my pain? And should I try physical therapy again? Will my experience be different now that I can tell them what I have (a SLAP tear)? I am scheduled for surgery in 3 weeks. Do you think between now and then it is worth trying physical therapy? Do you believe surgery is necessary?
hi Dixie Linn how r u going with yr shoulder. i had the same situation/timeline as you. i have just had surgery. wont know success for a couple of months.
Thank you for this video! My diagnosis is slap syndrome of right shoulder and damage of long head of biceps. Tell me please, if I have pain in my long head of the biceps when I make this exercises, should I continue? Is this pain normal?
Hi Doc Jo, for the band exercises to help strengthen the shoulders how many times a week do you suggest doing them, and once you get a little better and stronger at doing them do you increase the repetition or the color of the band to have more resistance or is always better for the shoulder always using a light resistance band? Hello Doctor, I found this video extremely helpful. My doctor believes I have a labral tear (just underwent an MRI 3 days ago). It is safe to do push ups and planks? even side planks? I love working out I have been doing Pure Barre for 6 months and love it. I have tried to manage my shoulder and neck pain (cervical disc herniation). I have managed my pain for three years now. I want to avoid surgery as long as possible. I don't want to stop working out but I am not a fan of gyms (they get boring). I am not sure if it's safe to continue barre or restart yoga or pilates with a labral tear? Work out classes are my passion but I want to reduce pain, strengthen my body and delay surgery ( since I am only 26). I know surgery will be in my future but I want to do everything I can in my power to rehab myself in the meantime.
Thanks. It's really based on your pain level and stability in your shoulder right now. Those should be okay as long as you are able to do them correctly without pain, but unfortunately, I really don't know since I can't evaluate you. If you can, even if it's just for an evaluation, going to see a PT in person to get a program specific for you will really be the best option.

It will be a great help to me.
Thanks a lot...!!!
You're welcome. I hope they help too.
What's the status update?
@@robertstrada2456 Pain did not go away. I did stem cells last year, it helped a lot but they is still a little bit of pain left. In a couple of months I may try another PRP shot
@@PatenaudePhilippe I also have a labrum tear and I'm also considering stem cell. Is it worth it?
@@willwise2168 Yes it's totally worth it. I did the injection and the SLAP tear exercises for 6 month. After that I did another MRI and the tear was gone
Would you recommend these for athletes as well? Or are there alternative exercises you would recommend?
I started lifting weighhts before doing these stretches. When is a good time to start lifting weights with this injury?
Doctor Jo you’re awesome
Thanks!
It's been 7 month post labrum surgery but still not 100% heal. Got this video on internet today after months of research for proper rehabilitation of my shoulder.
Glad to have this video.
Thank you so much 👍
You're welcome.
I have mild instability in my left shoulder does these exercise will help me?
How long should we wait in between exercises?
Did it just now feels better thanks
I'm glad!
Dr. Jo, are shoulder labrum rehab exercises contraindicated if there is a rotator cuff issue present as well? What about visa versa? Are RC exercises contraindicated for labrum issues?
Thank you Dr Joe. Only done a few stretches and feeling a lot less pain.
You're welcome.
Thanks so much, will do these all every day!
You're welcome!
How did your SLAP tear heal? Without surgery and only PT? I'm a subscriber :)
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Have you really started working out with slap tear ?
Yes. These exercises strengthen the stabilizer muscles and get the shoulder to rotate correctly.
I have had bicep pain for 3 years now. My mri looked fine. I had a Ct arthrogram. It showed a superior labral tear. My surgeon says time for surgery since I have failed p t and injections
Hi Dr., can SLAP tear be healed without surgery?
Please do one video for bankart lesion and hill sach lesion
I've been diagnosed with a SLAP tear and have been scheduled for surgery in 4 weeks. Are these exercises more effective pre- or post-surgery? It's probably too late to see effective relief before my scheduled date.
How are you holding up? I’m 8 weeks post surgery
Thanks doctor Jo it really help me God bless to you more power.
You're welcome, and thanks.
very nice and simple way to explain to make a common man understand, well done ma"m. I had a shoulder tendonitis tear surgery 4 months back. I am on a rehab. Can i do these exercises. Moreover i cant touch my back with the operated arm as i can do with my unoperated arm . Please advice.
Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you. Definitely check with your surgeon first.
Thanks so much for this! I had ulnar nerve surgery a few months ago and I’m doing strength training again now. I’m going to incorporate some of these as well because from time to time my shoulder is sore from working etc. thanks I appreciate it
You're welcome!
I hope I don’t face underlying problems forming because of my waiting to get surgery
please suggest a excercise for slap tear type 1 of left shoulder
That shirt is so relatable
Thank you. Great presentation
You're welcome, and thanks.
Dr. Jo I have a question
I am an amateur baseball pitcher and threw at about 70 mph. And as I said right before, i really appreciate your video.
Question: If pain becomes completely relieved, Will it be proper to do this excercise with more intensive therabands?
Yes, as long as you are not having much pain, you can increase the bands as you feel like you are able. Good luck.
Thank you
You're welcome! I'm glad it has helped.
Tracey did you have surgery?
This is exactly what mine does refer to forearm. Did you have surgery?
Very good and it helps a lot!
Thanks, and you're welcome!
Hi Dr.
You're welcome. I hope they help.
I have a question please, when should I start doing stretching and exercises for the slap tear? I don't need surgery the doctor said but of course I need rest. So how much rest is required before excersising? Thank you
This is soooo awesome! Thank you!
You're welcome!
You're welcome. Good luck. I hope they help!
Can these exercises will help in ANTERINFERIOR LABRUM TEAR
I jist got surgery for a labral tear in my left shoulder 😢
Awesome. I'll work on these. I just had the MRI - a little bit of a mess. No full tears so I'm hoping I can work this out with PT. Here we go.
Thanks. Good luck!
Did your shoulder clunk at all in the shoulder like when doing shoulder presses?
Can you do a video for MCL treatment? Thanks
Sure. It is already on my list of videos to make :-)
Hello Dr. Jo,
Thanks for the helpful video!
It's possible. I don't really know for sure since I can't evaluate you.
@@raindropgirl103 hey did your slap tear is cured by exercises?
Hi Dr.
I have:
Glenoid chondromalacia of right
shoulder
2. Arthrosis of right acromioclavicular
joint
3. Osteolysis of acromial end of right
clavicle
4. Type 2 superior labrum extending from
anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesion of
right shoulder, initial encounter
PT has helped but I've been on light duty.
Unfortunately, a SLAP tear will not heal on it's own, but you can strengthen the muscles around it to protect the area. Good luck.
AskDoctorJo so surgery is the only solution? :/
I am pretty sure I have a tear on the other side as well, but I have done fine with conservative treatment.
heyo bro. how do you feel right now ?
thank you for the video, how did you fix your slap tear?
Good luck.
Does a SLAP tear also cause pain when doing a (overhead) throwing movement?
yeah i’m 17 w a pretty messed up shoulder popped out over 50 times no doctor checkup yet, But i did notice in the beginning my throwing decreased tremendously; immediately.
Yes. I was just diagnosed with a SLAP tear and I play(ed) baseball. The pain from throwing the ball hard was extremely painful.
Hi Doctor , you said you had one before slap lesion did you fix it with surgery or without
thanks Doctor Jo!
You're welcome!
Will dead hangs help with the healing/strength process of the labrum?
Does these exercises help fix the tear as well or do we have to get the surgery? I have slap tear and doctor told to have surgery. Just wondering if these exercise are just for strengthening or for fixing the tear?
Jo, love the videos! I have broken down, after months of PT and a 2nd opinion; decided to do the surgery option. Can you do a video on Pre-Op exercise to help in a Post-Op recovery?
Thanks. Sometimes surgery is the only option. These would be for pre-op as well. Good luck!
Are any of these exercises also good for a Bankert tear? Any that should be avoided if you have a Bankert tear?
These exercises are really helpful thank you. Just one question though - on the 3 band exercises you do (in front, 45 degrees and behind) is there any problem with using a long band, looping under both feet and then both arms at the same time rather than one at a time? At the moment I’m doing left then right but figured I could save time if I did simultaneously?
You're welcome. Both can be done at the same time.
Thanks! Did you use a weight or was it just your arm hanging?
just my arm
Been having intense pain and popping for a few days. Can barely lift my arm at this point. Gonna try these and hopefully they help 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Also, if these exercises are painful, should I continue to do it or will that make it worse?
If you don't know what your diagnosis is, it might make it worse if you try to push through the pain. I do have some other videos that are for passive range of motion that might be a little less painful.
Hi Dr. JO - I have an old Posterior Labrum tear in my shoulder (almost 2 year old injury) Would these exercises be applicable and helpful ?

Question just got my MRI results today and I have a slap tear.Csn that cause the pain I’ve been feeling in my neck and back of shoulder? Meaning can it spread
These for after surgery or instead of?
Thank you

IMPRESSION: MRI of the left shoulder demonstrates:
Would you recommend these exercises after arthroscopic surgery for a SLAP tear?
How far out are you from your surgery?
I've had a SLAP lesion too but at 20 years old and being an active tennis player i had no other choice thabmn surgery.
Is it ok to feel the shoulder a bit sore after the excercises? Like it has been a bit inflamed?

Thank you for this video! My diagnosis is slap syndrome of right shoulder and damage of long head of biceps. Tell me please, if I have pain in my long head of the biceps when I make this exercises, should I continue? Is this pain normal?
You’re welcome! Some pain is normal, but it shouldn’t be sharp or extreme.
