- Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by J.S. Bach performed on the world’s largest pipe organ “Midmer-Losh Pipe Organ” in Boardwalk Hall Auditorium in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The pipes are embedded into the walls of the Auditorium. The organ has 7 manuals, 449 ranks, 337 registers and 33,114 pipes. Absolutely Incredible

this theme really just shows how a pipe organ is so great. in one section you hear the power, the low end, the vibrations. in another you hear the higher, more majestic parts of the organ capabilities. and throughout you can just keep hearing how it can basically barrage so many notes at once.
Whoever damaged that organ committed a crime against humanity.
The culprit died at two weeks old...a hurricane caused most of the damage

@@johnsantrizos7638 The hurricane actually didn't damage the pipes and chests at all. They're far too high up. What it did do was damage the blowers, which have all been fixed, and completely destroy the combination action. That has since been replaced as well. All the damage to the actual pipes and chests was from water leaks and careless construction workers.

It is pretty impressive how well this captures the sound, especially the low frequencies of the pedal.
Those bass pedals are TERRIFYING. I love it so much!
This organ has ten (10!) 32' ranks. Eight are available for use, the remaining two are in the two ceiling pipe chambers yet to be restored.
AND a complete 64' rank (one of only two in the world) that is fully playable!
This instrument is extremely powerfull - maybe the most powerfull around the world. What's more its still being renovated and year by year getting even more powerfull.
32' ==> 16Hz and 64' ==> 8Hz. Hearing is limited to ~20Hz. Therefore, 64' is used to frighten the people (infrasound). And yes it is more a feeling of an earthquake.....

I say this having listened to SO MANY professional recordings where there is NO bass at all! What's the point of Bach (with amazing lines in the pedal), if you can't even really hear the pedal?!
So this is a FANTASTIC recording. On my Bach Organ playlist, this one is actually the recording with the most bass.
That means, the Coda at the end sounds better here, than it does on almost any other recording I've heard on TH-cam!

The secret is the 32 foot diaphone! Not usually found on a church organ, but on theatre organs! It's a cross between a flue and a reed pipe.

Id walk right to the middle and stand still. It's like cleaning an old rug. The body and mind can be purified through sound if directed according to the issue at hand, how deeply rooted it is. And was it created by the mind first or the soul body? Or both simultaneously? I'd like to think the latter.

It really impressed me when I finally did the grand tour last year. I did the mini tour my first trip after I realized the train was not running from Philly. I wound up on bus. But last year, the trains resumed. One takeaway of seeing riggers working was what they said. Nobody of any trade, any job, any company, or any entity is allowed to do anything forward of halfway in the room without permission of the Boardwalk director. This is from work done decades ago that wound up with workers walking over hundreds of pipes and smashing them flat. Plus them cutting massive cable bundles.
I busted my hump getting train service back on the Atlantic City Rail Line. Please use and enjoy it.
I wonder if the company that allowed such abuse of the organ was penalized for the damage they caused...which no doubt cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair!
I keep returning to this recording, it’s so magical this enormous sound. Especially the final part in Adagio Vivace and Molto Adagio like those last bars made me shiver down my spine, truly amazing.
If this is the organ at least 50% complete then imagine playing the toccata on 100%. I really wish I can make it to the US to visit boardwalk hall and this magnificent instrument!
My Mom was a church organist and my Dad was a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra Chorus and he was also a church choir director. Both of them wanted me to learn how to play the organ but I was never really interested in pursuing it. I love flute and piano. Mom and Dad would have LOVED to hear this organ, and Mom would have loved to play it.
Definitely the clearest organ sound that I have ever heard.
You should listen to the 1890 Cavaille-Coll organ in the Abbey of St Ouen, Rouen France.

The Midmer-Losh instrument is lovely - too bad professional equipment was not set up to capture that performance.....unless there have been updates, I must point out that only 125 ranks of the organ, on the right side of the stage are playable. The left side suffered the most damage and it is going to take about 14 million dollars and some years to restore that side. The 64-foot pipe is located on the right side and playable. Let's hope that once this organ is restored (if ever), that it will receive both the upkeep and protection it deserves to prevent falling into a deteriorating condition again!
Nope, absolutely wrong. The left chamber is roughly 95% rebuilt, with the right chamber also at about the same, so it has roughly 250 ranks available now, also also at the time of this video. And the left main chamber was never damaged btw.
About 53% of the organ is playable at this time. I just watched a video from the organ curator about it.

The left main is fully restored, it came back online in 2017. The right main is pretty much fully playable as well. In fact, the left forward (Choir division) is almost done, the chamber has been cleaned and painted and the restored chests are back in. In addition, the 100" reeds in the right center have been restored and are online.

Fabulous!! I know Bach predates the Midmer-Losh by a short while but I think he wrote this piece knowing that it would be performed on this masterful instrument.
Virgil Fox used to say the same thing about using all of a modern instrument's resources.

Much of the leather in the Right Stage is original as compared to the Left Stage where the chests that could be taken out were sent for restoration. They'll do a bit-by-bit restoration of the chests in the Right Stage when they can as they're working on the Left Forward.

Not simply played but played very well and beautifully.
I just have to add a bit of basic information for any novices watching. This is a pipe organ. There is absolutely no amplification, microphones, or loudspeakers involved. All the sound is generated by giant air blowers feeding rows upon rows of wind-powered pipes.

I've been to Boardwalk Hall and my imagination fills in what the cell phone can't. BTW, that cell phone is doing grest! I get goose bumps evety time I get to see, hear and feel this instrument.

We have. Visit any cathedral, city auditorium or older entertainment venue and you will find these instruments tuned to fill to the space they occupy. The two biggest are to be found in Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and the Albert Hall in London.
I want to hear this recorded in high bit rate digital and multi channel Dolby Atmos by a team of professional engineers (Tom Fine, son of Bob Fine of Mercury fame comes to mind) using appropriate classical large diaphragm condenser mikes capable of recording the 64ft pipes, rigged in an appropriate array for Atmos considering the positions of ALL the chambers, even though some are not working now. And then recreate the recording again when all the chambers are working! I would probably even donate some coin to help make that happen.
Now if we could just recreate Virgil Fox!!

Pretty cool! I noticed the SHEER POWER of some of the pedal work, probably using 32' stop(s), if not maybe even a 64' stop or two.
I have it on my BUCKET LIST to play this beast one day before I die. I'm currently 53 years old.
By the way, the recording here is really not all that shabby. I heard a little bit of talking toward the beginning, and the recording was a bit late. Other than that, really not that bad. I'm surprised it caught as much of the dynamics of the organ as what it did.

There are two 64' stop tabs on the console, the Dulzian and the Diaphone Profunda. Due to space the Dulzian was kept. The bottom 22 pipes of the Dulzian are diaphone pipes. The rest are reeds.
It has a 64' stop and ten 32' stops, eight of which currently work. Two of the 32s are on 50" wind pressure. It's pretty safe to say it's unrivaled.

Its neat to hear in person. The lowest note just clacks when played by itself. It has a clacker in the bottom controlled by the air pressure that beats at 8 times per second.

They were actually setting up the hall for the new arena football team, the Atlantic City Blackjacks, for what would be their only season before the league folded. I don't believe the team had the organ played at their home games, but they certainly could have, it would have given them significant home field advantage.

The sound here is pretty good but the fugue is too fast for me. I would’ve preferred it a little slower pace. However, this song will always be among the greats in the organ repertoire ❤️🎶
For me best fugue is BWV 578 Fuga in G minor played by Michel Chapuis. Absolutely divine.

Well, despite the fact that the recording was apparently done using a tiny device, a phone likely, that pedal bass was brutal, like abyssal. I have never heard anything similar. I guess a combination of the several 32' reeds and the 64' Diaphone, possibly with mutation stops. Now we need a proper recording on this monster dwelling the gigantic edifice.

449 Ranks, 337 Registers. Would someone please enlighten me as to the difference between a RANK and a REGISTER ? When are they not the same ?
Some registers (usually high-pitched harmonics registers) have more than one rank. A "Mixture IV" has four ranks (indicated by Roman numerals). A "Scharf III" has 3 ranks, and so on.
The Fugue is a little too fast for my taste, especially given the cavernous acoustics of the enormous space this noble instrument plays into. Even so, and with only half the stops in playable condition, the sound is most impressive!
But beautiful non the less.

I can't believe how great the sound is on this video. The pedal is--WOW! I'm cursing the organist for not "playing the room" though...come on, in that space with those acoustics and that pedal, you need to take T.I.M.E. The tempo is as if they are playing some screechy electronic "toaster" is some dry carpeted American church.

the organ is hidden "in the walls". On both sides of the stage You can see arches: behind those are the two biggest organ chambers in this instrument. Another two are on the walls adjacent to those two. That's four. And we're still not done. Around where the camera is are the other four chambers. On both sides of the auditorium there is a chamber in the wall and in the ceiling. This instrument is enormous.
@prince, the manual is under the right stage chamber.
The organ pipes surround the hall, and the console is to the right of the front when looking at the stage. This organ is so massive, even it's seven manual console and hundreds of stops are dwarfed by the rest of it. The auditorium is simply part of the organ.
The pipes are spread throughout both sides of this enormous convention hall

This organ to my mind has always been proof that bigger doesn't always mean better it always sounds muddled and makes good organists sound mediocre. I appreciate it's the states so someone would have to build the biggest but just because you can doesn't mean you should. Oh and is it nearly lunchtime because the speed that's being played at implies he's gotta go somewhere.
One reason it ends up sounding muddled is performers treating it all like a single instrument. With the distance delays between chambers, playing several simultaneously creates timing issues.

What a clobberfest!!! Yeah, it's most definitely NOT "Bach's instrument" but the d minor is reportedly THE measuring stick even he used to test the mettle of an instrument. I'm impressed there is enough clarity and nuance in the beast to handle the fugue at that tempo, it was a pretty fast clip. Reminds me of the big Moeller at Chicago Symphony Center. It's purpose is not worship, nor is it recitals of the repertoire but to keep up with the Chicago Symphony brass and otherwise accompany entire orchestra. This one is to essentially do as the crap they ply over the PA system at United Center before Bulls games. Entertain and give atmosphere before a mass event (when they return). I've her the old Chicago Stadium had a monster in it too.
Chicago stadium had a roughly 36,00 pipe theater organ. It was one of the largest of its type. Sadly practically all but the console were destroyed in a fire not long after its removal.
Chicago Stadium's organ was about a tenth the size of Boardwalk Hall's. In fact, even Boardwalk Hall's smaller organ (the Kimball in the ballroom) is larger than it.
This organ was designed to accompany the crowds of thousands that used to fill this hall for things like political conventions without getting muffled when everyone was singing loudly, patriotically and enthusiastically. I can't imagine any musical occasion over which this instrument could not soar.

The organ plays well. No offense, but the organist doesn't... The lack of tempo ruins the whole point of what the composer wanted to say. It's like reading a book with no dots and commas... Pretty useless.
