Fun fact: Metallica’s Black Album, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Soundgarden’s Badmotofinger, Guns and Roses’ Use Your Illusion 1&2, Nirvana’s Nevermind, and Pearl Jam’s Ten were all albums released within 44 days of each other back in 1991. What a year of music!

@@pastorofmuppets13 yep, brings back memories of surfing through the cd’s at the music shop (which just don’t exist anymore) and picking an album just because the artwork was cool or it had the parental advisory sticker on it lol. I would spend hours in those stores and consider it entertainment. That and like Blockbuster for movies lol.

@@jaybird455 Yeah, I spent an insane amount of time in Blockbuster too lol. I like the instant gratification of Netflix etc, but there was something special about going to the store and finding that movie you were wanting to see finally in stock! Such a simpler time...

Such raw power and emotion .. I was never a Pearl Jam fan when they came out. I was more an Alice in Chains guy but as I got older, their music began growing on me. I watched this the day it aired on Mtv and was blown away by this performance even not being a fan at the time.

Supposedly Eddie Vedder was sick with bronchitis during this performance. It makes sense because his voice sounds a bit more raspy than normal but it’s perfect for this song. Arguably it makes the song better.

Ok, I was a little old as I graduated from UW in 1978 but that lead me to a career as an accountant, yet I met almost every important person who was from Seattle over the next 40 years including ever member of Pearl Jam. What a great time to be alive, I did the books for some interesting people, been to parties which included the Microsoft big wigs and was at ever club and venue that every popular band played at. As relative to this post Eddie Vedder was and is one of the most genuine people I ever met.

He did this with a cold. He missed the correct lyrics the first time when he says “how quick the sun can drop away” and I’ve seen him sing enough (15 times) to notice that after “how quick the sun can…” he shakes his head in frustration. And then absolutely slays the rest of it. Also “we belong together” is improvised.

Im from 72 and the first time i heard his amazingly long notes blew my mind and even today he still does it a true artist, Top three voices of that Era Eddie Vedder , Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley nobody else came close and still to this day seems like nobody ever will again.

  • @jennhurl

    Commit to memory 😉🤣
    The Big 5 of Grunge:
    Pearl Jam - Eddie Vedder
    Nirvana - Kurt Cobain
    Soundgarden - Chris Cornell
Alice In Chains - Layne Staley
Stone Temple Pilots - Scott Weiland
Sadly, all have passed away except for Eddie Vedder. This song is incredibly special to Eddie & you can feel his passion for it. He wrote it about his first love. I read a great quote from him explaining it.
"The song is about letting go," said Vedder. "It's very rare for a relationship to withstand the Earth's gravitational pull and where it's going to take people and how they're going to grow. I've heard it said that you can't really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited. It's a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can't have forever."

I absolutely love your true reactions to music and would love the word to get out about 22 vets a day that take their lives. It is inexcusable our country treats us the way they do. Anyone who's been through a horrible breakup when there's still love there will relate to this song. Lyrics such as "And all I taught her was, everything", "How quick the sun can drop away", and "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why, why, can't it be, can't it be mine?" are a reason why it's such an emotional song for so many. Eddie's talking about his emotional pain, and those of us who've also been through it can so easily relate to the anguish in his voice.
As for their studio albums versus their live performances, Pearl Jam is one of only a handful of bands where you listen to the studio album just to get a rough idea of what greatness you're going to witness live. Their live performances are always BETTER than the studio version, and that's true talent.

Eddie Vedder is the lead singer - the 90's were a great time for music - especially if you were into Grunge and or alternative - starting with Nirvana then you go to The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains were the leaders but then you had The Melvins, Stone Temple Pilots, Hole, Bush, Silverchair, Nickleback, Veruca Salt, Seether, Blind Mellon, Jane's Addiction and others all had their moments - there are also some who had their own category, these were a combination of different msucians from different bands who go together which include Temple of a Dog, Queens of the Stone Age, Audioslave and a few others

A lot of people miss, in the brilliance of the performance, that Eddie screws up the lyrics twice in this version. It wasn't a change for TV-friendly sake or anything, he just accidentally sang the words from the second verse and bridge during the first of each instead, and then repeated them in the second.
The lyrics in the first verse are supposed to be, "I know she gave me all that she wore..."
Instead he sang the part about how the sun drops away, which belongs in the second.
The lyrics in the first bridge are supposed to be, "These bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds..."
Instead he sang the part about how they cradle broken glass, which again, belongs in the second.

    • @willygonutz9687
      @willygonutz9687 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, you can see him shake his head as he sings it:
"How quick the sun can (shake, shake) drop away"
Changes the cadence of the lyrics.
But he's a master and he makes it work.

@@willygonutz9687 Yep. And his performance is such that no one cares. He was a guy who could make a song melodic without even rhyming.
