I had many a conversation with Rod at the Starbucks in Hermosa Beach. Rod was a gentle soul and far from being a "nut." Rod had some pretty unique ideas, but he would be very informative and thoughtful when speaking of the body building realm. I was very sad to hear of Rod's passing, but it reinforced the fact that you cannot judge folks and everybody has a back story. My heart ached for Rod as I would watch him pull his suitcase full of his belongings. He would shuffle to the bus stop and await the bus, in order to go to the library or the church where he slept. I miss speaking with Rod. The true test for me was the fact that my 90 lb pit bull, who was a most gentle soul, would immediately cuddle up to Rod when we would walk to the Starbucks. She was a great judge of character and she loved Rod. Rest in peace Rod.
Holy Shit!! I actually met this guy. He would tell me stories about bodybuilding and how his brother stole his Identity and took all his money. I thought he was full of shit when he talked about bodybuilding. He was a nice guy, I would buy him food and water all the time and he was very grateful. I have a few pictures of him some where.
I knew Rod pretty well in the mid 80's and 90's. He was living in Huntington Beach, CA. I was in L.A. We hung out quite often. He taught me a lot about bodybuilding and training. He did develop mental problems as he got older. I hope people don't judge his son. Lots of people tried helping Rod but couldn't. Most everyone close to Rod had to eventually distance themselves from him, myself included. He wouldn't help himself. He was the strongest guy I ever knew. And before he got sick, a really good guy. RIP Rod!
Your info is accurate on his mental health. I had the pleasure of knowing him a few years ago in the late 90's and early 2000's. He never really had a solid career cuz his focus was where his heart was and that was living as a bodybuilder. Unfortunately he (as most) couldnt always generate income from this lifestyle he loved so much. Great story Nick and thanks for paying homage to Mr Rod Koontz. May God bless him.
Hey Nick, sad to watch your video (I did not know he died) but you did a good job on showing the brighter life of Rod Koontz. I knew him personally back in the late 1990's through 2008 and had many a discussion on similar topics. He used to hang out at the library every day for years and do his "research" (the government was after him, espionage, huge $inheritance$) on the public computers. He trained for awhile at the Gold's Gym in Redondo Beach California and I remember him showing me his contest photos.. great physique.. and that cans of tuna fish and oranges were his contest prep meals. I am truly saddened by his downfall but he was always nice, considerate and friendly to me. Rest in Peace Rod and condolences to your friends and family.
Cant believe so many guys dying im 49 and still have all the mags I bought from the early mid 80s and I remember him well,he was always in Muscle and fit loads of adds,
I knew Rod. I meet him when I was a teen in the World's in Fountain Valley. He was on top of his game. He was very good to me and Treated well. I am so sorry to hear the news.
This makes me really sad. I attended a day long seminar that he gave at a gym in Phoenix, sponsored by the gym owner. He spoke really well, explained things very clearly and was friendly and personable to everyone there. Somewhere I have a really good photo that I took of him, showing the tattoo. Its hard to believe this is the same person.
thanks for posting this! I remember Rod Koontz. He was kind of the marlboro man of bodybuilding. good looking and rugged with an impressive body. kinda sad if things really ended up like that for him. He probably wasn't any more crazy than most of the people in your comment section.
These "off the grid" back alley stories of tragic endings for some of these former greats is a needed and very interesting addition to the history of bodybuilding. Well done.
Sadly most people in America are 1 paycheck or 1 bill (like him getting his car impounded) away from becoming homeless. Once you become homeless how do you rebound? How do you get a job without a residence when your address is the 2nd thing that they ask for on your application? How do you ever get the loss of your residence off of your credit report to be able to have another landlord to allow you to rent from them? How do you save up enough money for a deposit for a place (even the most tiny apartment)? America is broken for some, sadly.
These stories are important to share. I remember that cover in 1986 which was my peak years in training. I see so many kids now thinking they want to be pro. Learn and think about your authentic life.
i'm not crazy about him either. too much verbiage and takes too long to get to the point. his way of speaking in trying to sound unique is annoying. nick is much better.
I do remember him, probably had that issue of M&F. That was about 10 months or so after I started working out, and I was reading everything I could get my hands on. Goes to show, bodybuilders, even jacked, successful ones, are subject to the same problems as anyone else, maybe more so with health issues. Too bad he didn't/couldn't get the help he needed for his problems,
When the sixties counter culture became mainstream this is what it looked like. In the seventies, it was fashionable for guys who probably grew up with crew cuts and button down shirts to have collar length hair, mustache, sideburns and look like the Beatles. My dad, his friends, and practically everyone else, sported this style. It's probably associated with the period when sexual morays loosened up a lot. The 'stasche continued into the eighties albeit with different hairstyles and no sideburns due to guys like Tom Select who were major sex symbols. That's my take on it anyway.
Combo I was attempting to explain the cultural/ fashion evolution of the porn 'stache. During the seventies it was all about sex. Alpha males "presented" themselves pretty aggressively ( "Seventies Buldge") Really good example of this was Robert Plant, Elvis and Johnny Cash also come to mind. They all had sideburns, no "stasche. However, usually it was a trifecta of hair, sideburns, 'stache. Open shirt, gold chains, preferably hairy chest. So, yes hair at that time was probably regarded as very masculine and sexy. The hairstyles changed, the sideburns went away, but the porn 'stache stayed with us for another decade. That's the way I remember those glorious decades.Hope that helps. Regards.
I like watching your reports on bodybuilders, very good stories. Normally I wouldn't comment on much stuff online, but its sad to see some of the major Icons from any decade pass away, and w/o much information concerning their deaths. I know its usually a 2nd hand story, or report of what happened. since its hard to confirm some online stories. I remember Rod Koontz, read about him in a muscle magazine in the 80's. though after not seeing him in other publications, I wondered what did happen to him. Glad to see something about what did happen, though its sad to see him pass away like that. My condolences to his family. 12:04 am, thursday, 11-28-2019.
That, in and of itself, I regard as a mark of illness. Either move or else fight the system, have a cause, and stand for something. But don't go loafing like a bum.
Thanks for such great videos. Really well done. A sad story and really nice that you took the time to shed light on an interesting character who went from great success and magazine covers to the very bottom. Terrible that this happens - it shouldn't.
Its not the act of giving someone free shit thats communist, its the conditions of the government its being done under. Nothings free, if they were to give him it for the funding comes from somewhere.
really enjoying your videos man. I'm 40 and first got into bb at 16. All the bb mags early 90's were yates ray and company it was bigger business then. now it's low key because it's lacking more stars
He loved his son so much that he felt he was a burden for him, and being a homeless only made things worst, so he decided to let nature decide his fate.
sad to hear that he is dead. Thanks for making this video however. He was one of the first bodybuilders who caused me to get into bodybuilding nearly forty years ago. He was a friend of Arthur Jones who begin the Nautilus company and invented the Model S weight training machines with the elliptical pulley system. If you ever can get a hold of a book called The Nautilus bodybuilding book, Rod is the main model on the machines and all of the pictures, the pictures where he is not the model interestingly Casey Viator takes over. there are definitely one too many sad stories in the world of bodybuilding.
That is not letting " nature take its course". The body is designed to cure itself, naturally. Contracting cancer is not natural and it is a horrible un natural condition. My heart goes out to Rod. I remember him well as we were the same age. RIP Rod.
This guy had a article about him in the first body building magazine I ever got (Muscle Mag). I think it was around the same time Jeff King won his Mr Universe title for the NABBA
first i want to say thanks for the information you put out' very professional and sad story's of men that ones were on top of the world' this man's son is not telling the truth about his story with the father. thanks again man for your work jp miami god bless
i rember him , now you know why i would use in my comments thee, im old school i started back with guys , back in 1972 i was 12 yrs old, i will 59 in oct17,any now you why thee, he's the reason, thanks for bring back to remberance.
I remember him from back in the day. Never know he was homeless, he used to sell courses out of M&F magizine. Yeah, he was around way before internet etc, that's probably why most have never heard of him, I'm 53 I remember him well. Still sad to hear he died homeless. RIP.
Rod did a visit workout and questions a Zufer's Gym in Costa Mesa, Ca about 77 or 78. I nice guy, had a lot of potential. He had a gym in Orange County for awhile. Was on the cover of Iron Man about that time. Too bad, so sad. He seemed like an honest person who loved the Iron!
Very sad how some of the best bodybuilders end up. One of my favourites Mike Mentzer had a rough ride in the 80s. Before coming back in the 90s then sadly dieing aged only 49 in 2001. Followed two days later by his brother Ray Mentzer.
man I love your videos. please do one on Don Youngblood. Truck driver that went into bb later in life. Sorry I suggest a video in every comment but you're really good at it.
I knew Rod since 1992 and yes,he lost his mind - i remember talking to him outside the very STARBUCKS mentioned in the video and his ramblings were crazy - sad because he was a nice guy
I think I remember one of the covers. He was standing with the guy from the US TV show "Hunter" Unless I have him confused with someone who looked just like him? He was saying he developed his Bicepts with the straight bar with the circles in them so he could hit the heads from all different direction.
Most homeless have mental issues. I do remember him from the late 70's to mid 80's. Sad he ended the way he did but, welcome to America, either you have or you don't and this man lost everything including his family. He, like most athletes, was ill prepared for a life outside athletics and never made any money from bodybuilding. So if you have no marketable skills, you are screwed. Stories like his abound. Good luck with your channel.
Yeah, that's sometimes the story, but not necessarily. One mistake we tend to make is to *always* think of the mentally ill as a victim no matter what. Well, sometimes they can be stupid and a pain in the ass as well, just like any other person, healthy or not. Health (or lack of it) doesn't determine wether a person is good or bad... And, i guess, sometimes people just lose their patience with assholes and avoid them, family or not, (mentally) healthy or not. And they end up alone, end of story. I have no idea what kind of guy this dude was. I was just explaining a (possible) side of it.
catchphraseeees baby pleaaasee.. Damn, I thought you watched Lui on a daillyyyyy and even nightlyyy, but supposedlyyy you didn't even once. Shame on you, your lui watching game is oiiiiiil. Only mildly saluted. Not properly executed that is.
The videos are so thoughtfully made and informative. The review of body builders who have died seems to be leading us somewhere, but what is the lesson these dead athletes offer us?
Sad. If he was Australian or in any other country in the developed world (except the USA), he could have had cancer treatment for free. All of the homeless here get as much healthcare/hospital stays-- as much as they need.
Oh my god I met this guy and sat with him and ben and joe weider at the 1981 Olympia. I snuck past security up to the front row sat down with those guys. I was 16 years old, they never said for me to leave or nothing and I was not suppose to be there god thats weird I remember talking to him. Koontz had just competed in the show that was right before the Olympia. I didn't know who he was. He sat down with me and ben and joe weider and was talking, he was wearing a muscle shirt, and I said to him, "man you should be up there competing" i didn't notice he just was cause my seat was more in the back. So he said to me "I just was do I fucking look different up there?" he acted like an asshole. Man I remember that I also met Arnold, Tom Platz, Franco, and few others
It's scary how many people just end up developing mental illness. I'm 45 and two or three people I went to high school with are now total loons. One actually killed someone, another one started a cult and just got as many women pregnant as he could before it sort of collapsed in on him and he was sent to prison for something.
Nick as always I'm learning more on these vintage builders. Sad this happened to this man. But in reality. Are we shocked. It seems more easier for bodybuilders of today to have back up plans to make ends meet. With creating their own websites and becoming personal Trainers. And I'm not judging. But also dabble into the adult film industry. Whether it being straight porn ,fetishes videos to worshipping and gay for pay. If this man like many on the comment section keep saying he was a bit of a Unstable tool. It's not his son's fault. We have no clues on how their relationships ended. But let's be real. Bodybuilding is an addiction if you know how to control yourself. If not. Be prepare to lose everything.😊

A pit bull.... yeah. Now i get it
Really nice story and very heartbreaking as well. I can tell your a nice person from what and how you wrote this. Take care.
Thank you for sharing.
Street dwelling is often a place where prophets go.
Holy Shit!! I actually met this guy. He would tell me stories about bodybuilding and how his brother stole his Identity and took all his money. I knew Rod pretty well in the mid 80's and 90's. He was living in Huntington Beach, CA. I was in L.A. We hung out quite often. He taught me a lot about bodybuilding and training. I remember buying those mags back in the 80's

He has the golden age classic amazing shape. None of this gut you get today.

These "off the grid" back alley stories of tragic endings for some of these former greats is a needed and very interesting addition to the history of bodybuilding. Well done.
I was at the Mr USA in Atlanta when he won in 1977 and he looked great. It's sad that he ended up that way.
U made the video i asked for thank you
He was awesome. He was on the cover of the first bb mag I ever bought. Muscle & Fitness 1987
Man what a unfortunate story :-(
Nick you're doing a great job bro , I hope you will be more and more successful in future
Totally remember this guy in those days. Thee Animal. Thx Nick!

Thats probably the most american looking man I have ever seen. Right next to Rick Rude and Tom Selleck
These stories are important to share. I remember that cover in 1986 which was my peak years in training. I see so many kids now thinking they want to be pro.
Learn and think about your authentic life.
nice. I like this channel now. usually Lui does these videos. but it's always nice to have some change.
yeah he sucks always the same old shit
Michael R. what's an egomanic?
i'm not crazy about him either. too much verbiage and takes too long to get to the point. his way of speaking in trying to sound unique is annoying. nick is much better.
LuiIs cancer
Nick, Love your videos bro. Appreciate you giving this OG some love
Remember seeing Rod a lot in the magazines back in the day. What a shame. Maybe he is at peace now. R.I.P.
I'm sure he and his family appreciated this tribute, and you calling him a "nut job" .
I always thought he had a GREAT physique! So sad. RIP Rod.
I do remember him, probably had that issue of M&F. That was about 10 months or so after I started working out, and I was reading everything I could get my hands on. what's up with bodybuilders and pornstars of the 70's and 80's they all have those awesome mustaches
Jerry r. - Too much testosterone.
Jerry, yeah the classic 70s porn mustache now that I think about I had one also Ahahahaah!!

yyz Why are sideburns associated with test/sex? Is it a sign of virility?
Combo I was attempting to explain the cultural/ fashion evolution of the porn 'stache. During the seventies it was all about sex. Alpha males "presented" themselves pretty aggressively ( "Seventies Buldge")

He sold gym equipment back in the late 80's early 90's I remember talking with him, seemed like a nice guy, pretty well spoken
The spelled with two E's is "thee" like pronounced in old english. Thou/Thee etc..
I like watching your reports on bodybuilders, very good stories. I remember this guy. I think he looked amazing. But of course he was nuts. Nobody goes homeless strictly "for financial reasons."
how do you know, old geyser?
I think you meant to spell it Geezer as in an old person NOT Geyser as you most likely didn't mean to call him a water spout.
OMAD Revolution. yes, they do my friend, yes they do......
OMAD Revolution some people do go homeless on purpose, because they hate the evil corrupt system and don't want to have anything to do with it.
That, in and of itself, I regard as a mark of illness. Either move or else fight the system, have a cause, and stand for something. But don't go loafing like a bum.
Thats a shame, great video Nick!
Very interesting videos, always happy to watch em
Nick, THANKS for all of your Fabulous Videos! They are Very Entertaining and Greatly Appreciated!
Thanks for such great videos. Really well done. A sad story and really nice that you took the time to shed light on an interesting character who went from great success and magazine covers to the very bottom. Terrible that this happens - it shouldn't.
I remember him he was amazing
Thanks Nick , you are doing a great job , I am enjoying all your videos , keep up the good work ! God bless you !
so sad... losing everything can happen to anyone, it's just a couple of bad decisions away...
Wow... that is one **sad** story. I'm going to have to start bringing a tissue box with me, listening to what happened to some of these folks.
Am I a communist (or socialist) if I think that nobody should die because of a too expensive treatment?
humanist
Its not the act of giving someone free shit thats communist, its the conditions of the government its being done under. Nothings free, if they were to give him it for the funding comes from somewhere.
american health care, apparently that's how great it is
or..isn’t..
You are a human being, a good one at that brother
I really love your channel! Great job! Please keep doing more!

I wish we had more info, something to learn from
Man this and Bill's story put Me to tears!!! Sad man, just can't throw legends away like they're Garbage. Sigh!! Damn man!!

Damn I remember reading an article of him as a Kid. Must have been 87 I was 10
poor guy, he looked amazing
So Tragic. I remember him as a kid in the wider books and mags😞 that sucks
man I love your videos. please do one on Don Youngblood. Truck driver that went into bb later in life. Sorry I suggest a video in every comment but you're really good at it.
I remember that guy from the 80's and early 90's
one of my favorites
That's sad. Do you know if there are any pictures of him as a homeless person? I am curious if he still had any gains.
RIP what a sad story
I knew Rod since 1992 and yes,he lost his mind - i remember talking to him outside the very STARBUCKS mentioned in the video and his ramblings were crazy - sad because he was a nice guy
He had it all.
I think I remember one of the covers. He was standing with the guy from the US TV show "Hunter" Unless I have him confused with someone who looked just like him? He was saying he developed his Bicepts with the straight bar with the circles in them so he could hit the heads from all different direction.
sometimes deep down in the heart some cannot stand the obstacles that block them from the fame that they try to bring to themselves.
This is quite a sad story 😞
Do a vid on Manuel Perry please.
Most homeless have mental issues. I do remember him from the late 70's to mid 80's. Sad he ended the way he did but, welcome to America, either you have or you don't and this man lost everything including his family. The mentally ill fall prey to the vultures among us who steal all their property.
Yeah, that's sometimes the story, but not necessarily. One mistake we tend to make is to *always* think of the mentally ill as a victim no matter what. I have no idea what kind of guy this dude was. I was just explaining a (possible) side of it.
You should feel bad for this man. It's a terrible way to die alone and without loved ones.
Nice vid I subbed
I remember him well RIP
i fucking cant watch Luimarco anymore...i cant bring myself to go trough all the "daily, nightly, bubble gut, salute" etc etc etc shit
and his weird fixation with bodybuilders glutes
but rather oyyyal
and his Videos are like 90% Catchprhases
catchphraseeees baby pleaaasee..
Damn, I thought you watched Lui on a daillyyyyy and even nightlyyy, but supposedlyyy you didn't even once. Shame on you, your lui watching game is oiiiiiil. Only mildly saluted. Not properly executed that is.
yes thats a typical Luimarco vid..there you have it...and dont forget to repeat the same shit on arabic
The videos are so thoughtfully made and informative. The review of body builders who have died seems to be leading us somewhere, but what is the lesson these dead athletes offer us?
Wow! I wish someone and he would've let someone help him sad story
Sad. If he was Australian or in any other country in the developed world (except the USA), he could have had cancer treatment for free. All of the homeless here get as much healthcare/hospital stays-- as much as they need.
Can you do a video on Dominic filiou he was a Canadian strongman with massive potential.
I remember this guy pretty cool guy
Fun fact: He was a computer operator 3:10, he looks in good shape in a lot of these foto's too!
Hey Nick have you ever did a video on Johnny Fuller
Some of your videos have really low volume. It's been bothering me for quite a while now.
Sad, I remember him well.
I did not know he died, he was posting on Facebook not that long ago.....
damn that's dark.. from Mr USA on magazines to living in the streets.. that's sad stuff
He had a very nice physique. One of the sad stories of bodybuilding
I remember this guy
wow, I did not know this!
Nick! Do a physique update if you can! (Especially comparing pre show vs now)
he was on facebook facebook.com/rod.koontz2?fref=ts
R.I.P
If not. Be prepare to lose everything.😊
nice job
Another sad story but interesting.
