A couple of questions for those that are knowledgeable in this area. When a food item is bitten, does it give off a difference scent so that the snake knows that the venom is taking effect ? I notice that once the strike is delivered, the snake will then go defensive if the mouse/rat runs back into the strike zone. Similarly, in an enclosure where there is more than one snake, it seems that once the prey is envenomated, the snake that did not deal the blow doesn't try to bite it. Am I missing something here ? Surely they aren't of the intelligence that they can differentiate between who did what to who and virtually say, well I didn't kill it so I won't eat it. I get that in the wild, the mouse would run off and the snake would follow the scent/urine/heat trail to find it again, but in an enclosed environment, I find it fascinating that there seems to be something at play to prevent multiple strikes on the majority of occasions (do they know when they have delivered a dry bite and have to re -hit ?) As others have stated, thanks DWA for providing such high quality graphics to show the true order of things.
Hi, I realize I am nowhere near an expert and that this comment is 2 months old but I keep quite a few venomous snakes, anywhere from tame things like copperheads and water moccasins to less tame things like gaboons and bush vipers and among them are 4 rattlesnakes, 2 of which are clutch mates (sibling) and they eat together so I’ll answer your questions based on my experiences. When a food item is bitten, the prey itself doesn’t give off a smell other than some tissues which rot depending upon the type of venom used but the venom gives off a distinct scent. I know exactly when my copperheads have envenomated their prey because it stinks after the bite. Other snakes in the same enclosure can also pick up on the scent of the venom and know not to go for the prey. Snakes are immune to their own venom but not the venom of other snakes so a fight over the prey could lead to horrible consequences and is generally not worth it. I keep 2 baby diamondback rattlesnakes together (they are siblings) and when one bites the mouse, the other starts looking elsewhere until I give him/her a mouse as well Rattlesnakes usually only deliver dry bites to potential predators since their venom is energetically expensive to make and is therefore saved for prey. When a rattlesnake is hunting it’s not gonna give a dry bite, it’ll always be full of venom.
your question is right and you also answer it yourself as well..once a snake bite its victim , it knows that venom is taking effect and therefore dont go for another bite
Pretty sweet! Came through with out a Domestic Disturbance too! I half figured that Female would come out and eat it? "Thanks baby..You ordered me dinner!" !!!! Assuming I saw that right, or its a two headed snake?🤣🤣 Would that happen, or no...the female eating it..not 2 headed snake lol
