Technique made the difference here. Gail was side to side out the blocks while Jones stayed straight from start.

Devers refused to race unless it could be a photo finish.
I believe Gail would have won if not for her nails. It may seem small and petty but every little thing that can add even one tick to efficiency must be considered. She only needed 3/100ths of a second to win. But a coach should have noticed small things like she had to devote some of her concentration to adjusting and protecting her nails but she probably refused to listen to him and so he made an exception to try to work around it. In an Olympic level event, once you get into the zone, you can't divert any concentration away from gaining speed like when Lawrence Fishburne on Biker Boys gets into the zone at the starting line there were no breaks in his concentration and when there was a break, he lost.
I noticed when she put her hands on the ground she was the only one who had to make an extra adjustment because of her nails. She likely had to make similar adjustments during the race to avoid breaking one of them when swinging her arms. That's proof of distraction. Every little thing counts towards efficiency. Every movement must be necessary. Every movement must be a contributing factor to winning or it must be removed before the race. The only way to keep unnecessary baggage is if you dont have to make adjustments for it once in the zone or the race itself. Making adjustments during the race can cost you 2/100ths of a second. Of course she would probably never agree but I ran track also so I know what it takes to beat the best. It takes everything. Yet I think Gail was great. She almost beat someone who was jacked up on drugs and steroids. That's phenomenal. I believe Flo-Joe would have gone faster than 10.49 if she didn't have to fight against aerodynamic drag created by her long beautiful hair.
Fact is, you’re right about this. As a sprinter in the blocks, we are supposed to be extremely relaxed! Something as simple as the hand position can totally determine the way we drive out, etc. Working around nails, as well as balling a fist right there takes off way too much, and we see Gail didn’t get her signature start here, either. But, I am impressed Gail was able to keep up with Marion while they were so close…this is where Gail is usually weak, but, she held her own very well.

These are the same long nails she won her double Olympic Golds with as well as being a part of the winning 4x1. Yes it’s arguable but no two athletes form is alike. You learn to adjust and be the best no matter the circumstance. That’s what makes a good athlete.

Obviously I wasn't talking about races that she won. As long as she is winning, no adjustments are needed. My point was only about what adjustments I think she could have been made to gain 3/100 of a second to avoid this lost. Keep in mind there are no mental or emotional adjustments available to reduce aerodynamic issues. Your only option for aerodynamic issues are to either change the shape (form) or get rid of whatever is causing the drag. There is no question she has drag caused by big hair that cost her 2/100 of a second in this race and I think anytime you have to make adjustments to keep from breaking for your nails in the middle of a race takes some of your focus away the race. That instance od redirected concentration will cost you 1/100 of a second minimum. Nothing personal against her fashion or style but it has a very small cost. However, the closest races are won and lost by very small margins. I believe Flo-Jo could have ran a 10.47 if she had less hair or just put it closer to her scalp with braids. Theres a reason swimmers shave all body hair packes hair under a cap. To become more aerodynamic. Instead of looking for fault in my opinion, my question to you is... What adjustments do you think she could have made to gain that 3/100 of a second she needed to win?

Devers has no chance of winning any race against top competition (outside of Privalova who also has the same problem) if she is not lead at literally every point of the race from 30 metres until the finish.

Given Marion Jones was nearly banned for life by the IAAF for doping as a teen : she needed the services of Johnnie Cochran, of OJ Simpson fame, to get her off with a ban of a few years. Her family would have had to pay thousands of $. (She played basketball in college as a result. )
It is likely MJ was doping from age 16 at the latest. Given her mediocre performance at cross fit, post doping, she was probably doping from age 12.

It is my understanding that she was not disqualified from events that occurred before September 1, 2000. Therefore, all of her results from the 1990’s are still officially recognized.

Marion Jones was never caught, and never confessed to wittingly taking drugs, even after she was jailed for lying about doing just that. The evidence against her was obtained by the FBI raid on BALCO. The BALCO records included all drug taking calendars, payments, receipts, taxes, etc. Basically once BALCO was raided MJ goose was cooked.
The way she was nearly banned for life at 16, by the IAAF, for doping and her hooking up with Hunter, even when the College she was at forbid it, indicates she was a user from age 16. It also explains why CONTE, the founder of BALCO, trusted her, he recognised a user and potential customer.
Hundreds of Base Ball and Foot ball stars were found in the BALCO records, as far as I am aware, no action was taken against any of them.
This raises the question, how far back did her association go ? Given Business periodically clear out their records, they are kept for tax purposes, MJ could have been a customer for much longer than her BALCO records show.
To this day, he has a poster of MJ in his office, and brags he made her a champion.
