In that time commercials were something huge, if you have made a commercial that could be a skyrocket in someones career, many singers and musicians made TV ads that were very lucrative and profitable, because the problem that companies are faced with today is a lack of ideas, copycating is a huge problem. In that time TV and radio was the only medium, today there is internet, social networks, so everything is quick,fast and instant. The commercial that Madonna have made with Mitsubishi making of probably had taken weeks, today few seconds is enough to post or launch a product on eBay or somewhere else.
Well, to be fair, by this point in her career she didn't needed much promotion by any other company. She was pretty much the music industry's hottest commodity at the time right after Michael Jackson and Prince had also already hit their own respective megastar status. It was more a case of Mitsubishi wanting to have music's biggest star at the moment in their commercials because that was what they thought would give their product some good promotion. But yeah, I guess Madonna also benefitted a bit from that as well in terms of promotion.
Watching commercials for products which haven't been in sale for decades is pretty cool. You get the pleasure of being charmed without the sick feeling that you're just being fooled into buying something you don't need. Plus that retro aesthetic.
