That's what I noticed too. I have a theory that modern fire and lightning bending (along with all other forms of bending) became quick and precise because they use bending for sport and entertainment; whereas bending from the old days are rudimentary but powerful, because they use bending to kill.
The technique lost power when it became public knowledge, probably to make it more practical, as before it was only available to royalty, who are the 1% in terms of talent.

I think after Zuko took over, he started bringing the correct version of Firebanding to the people, including the inhabitants of both the fire nation and other territories. In fact, I don't think that understanding the "right" way is so important, yes it helped Zuko when he lost his source in rage and anger and helped Aang who was afraid of fire. But if the "false" source - whatever it is -continues to work, then what difference does it make? Skill and technique are more influenced on result I don't think Zuko would have defeated Azula if she hadn't started going crazy.

I think the lightning bending in Korra's era is less powerful than Aang's, in Aang's era lightning bending is depicted as a fearsome form of lethal firebending and can easily kill someone, but in Korra's era lightning bending lost its art and meaning which makes it not as powerful
I think the changing of bending forms and culture plays a part. Similar to a fighting coach teach you to transfer your weight through your hits to connect with more force

Sure he's fast with it but it doesn't do much damage. Azula on the other hand almost killed aang and zuko, both of them needing weeks of recovery afterwards. Lightning bending in LoK is mainly used to generate electricity, so they trade power and lethality for stability and continuous use. And even then, it's not instant, yes he doesn't make much movements, but he still needs time to charge and aim. And when he needs to generate powerful lightning like when he was overcharging the vines, it took him time

Makos probably the fastest lighting generator, faster than Zuko can redirect. I mean there’s no way mako isn’t a lighting bending prodigy! Mako just seems exponentially more dangerous to me, because much like Zuko he doesn’t hold back yet hes still more dangerous. Keep in mind, Mako in lok was the same age as Zuko towards the end of atla. Like this guy doesn’t think twice about killing anybody, even crazy ass Azula was more merciful then he is. I think Zuko would win, but not without incredible difficulty.

zuko wins easily because mako was raised on the streets and therefore never received much of any professional firebending lessons or teachings. zuko was raised in the royal palace, had all of the best and most skilled teachers, and even experienced connecting with the dragons, the original firebenders. mako had none of these opportunities, making it impossible for him to truly stand a chance.

By the end of book 3 Zuko surpassed both Ozai and Iroh. His literal destiny was literally to surpass Iroh as a fire bender, since he has both Royal and Roku's blood and learned from the dragons.

Mako is more clear-headed and determined to win. Mako's battle IQ is better. Mako won most every battle not because he is the stronger bender, but because he's quick to capitalize on situations and opponent's weaknesses. If I ever wanted to recruit secret agent, I would choose Mako over Zuko. Zuko's battle code relies heavily on his own morals, righteousness, and honor. Every fight he fought is all about putting his very soul at the center of the conflict. This has it flaws. He would more likely to lose in elements of surprise. And he would over-extended just because he wanted to prove his strength. But people are more easily to put trusts in him this way. And that's what being the new fire lord is all about.
Zuko's stealth and infiltration abilities are nearly unmatched in Avatar. Dude sneaks in nations, prisons, fortresses, palaces and does what he needs to do and is gone. Youuu...don't want that on your team?
One point I'd like to make about Mako's lightning is that perhaps it happens faster because he usually doesn't take the time to charge it up like Azula and Ozai are often seen doing, which would account for it being weaker. The one time he needed to charge it was in the final episode, and he took his time in doing so. So perhaps the weaker bolts aren't so much a case of Mako being weaker, but Mako having more control or not having enough time to charge it up (ie, versus Amon while being bloodbent or while being attacked by Ming-Hua).
I think it's more a question of intent than anything else. In ATLA lightningbending is the ultimate firebending move, the most lethal one only known by the elite and only used with the intent to kill. So in ATLA they charge it until they think it will kill and then release. Ozai for example being a master of it was able to almost instantly launch a lethal blast right after the eclipse, showing that charging time is dependent on the mastery. In LoK, lightningbending is most commonly used to generate electricity. In that case the priorities are low intensity continuous blasts to avoid damaging the machinery and mast an entire workday. Mako who is more used to this style of lightningbending carries it over when he fights, delivering fast blasts but with low intensity and the ability to make continuous blasts. The only time his lightning did severe damage was against ming hua who was covered by water in the middle of a lake, so it was not on his own. We see him charging for a long time in the finale to produce high intensity lightning, so we can be sure in assessing that he is not very proficient with this style of bending and would not try to use it in fights

Zuko, and unfortunately its not close. Itd be entertaining for a but, but Zuey would outclass Mako. His versatility with firebending, especially after embracing Iroh advice of studying and incorporating the other elements, give him an diverse tool set that will give Mako trouble. Zuko is a better hand to hand combatant, and has used charge attacks, fire daggers, fire whips, two finger fire darta, empty handed fire cancelling parry's, fire waves, the list goes on.

The fact that when aang was struck by azulas lightning he died and only was heald using spirit water and only woke up after 2 weeks but when zuko was shot katara used regular water to heal him and he woke up after a few days
None of the arguments for Zuko makes sense. They are all a bunch of “Zuko, wins because he’s my favorite” type shit. Mako and Zuko are pretty equal. What makes Mako superior is his ability to *both bend and redirect lightning* Zuko can only redirect lightning, this is only useful if he sees a lightning attack coming at him. Any sneaky lightning attack will obliterate him just like Azula did to Aang. I like Zuko character better but I don’t see him winning in a fair first based on feats we’ve seen in the animation. If we incorporate assumptions and statements then zuko has a higher chance of winning. But based on feats only? Mako takes it without doubt.
Based on feats mako takes nothing. His instant lightning if weak and only knocks back people. He only took ming hua down because she was in a lake. So his lightning won't do anything. He also barely uses it in fights, only as last resort. Zuko was raised and trained for war. He knows way more advanced techniques. The only advantage mako has is his quick bending. But even then zuko showed more than capable of performing quick bending too. Both are very talented but one is an athlete and detective that occasionally gets involved in bigger stuff while the other is a soldier that regularly goes up against the prodigees of his time. His "instant" bending which he primarly uses and was only able to knock back amon despite being point blank. So either mako does not deal enough damage to end the fight with his lightning, or he leaves himself wide open. Zuko only gained a stable mindset that allowed him to use the full range of his abilities after he discovered dragon fire. So all his feats of "easily" (only aang beatss him "easily" when he's at full health but whatever) don't matter as they were alays a result of his recklessness. Firelord zuko contends (although gets consistently beaten but puts up a hell of a fight) with azula once she overcomes her mental illness, that azula being even stronger than before and having access to wild lightning bending feats. Zuko is a better martial artist than mako, being able to take on many skilled benders with only his swords. Zuko was taught true firebending which allowed him to in the span of days, at most weeks, go from getting recked by azula to stalemating with her on the airship. He also showed way more control over his bending than mako, sustaining fire for hours while walking and climbing, and using his breathe to retain his firebending in an area specifically made to prevent firebending. Those are all skills that mako is not shown to have and prove zuko's more advanced level. I'd also like you to point out one time where mako redirected lightningbending. The only time I could find is when he redirects the electricity from the mech. Electricity that very obviously is not on the same level as the lethal lightning zuko is used to given that mako survived it without any injury despite only starting to redirect it later. Mako is a very proficient athlete, but when it comes to a real fight, he gets constantly overpowered by his opponents, only ahcieving victory by using his environment (against ming hua) or in an extreme pinch (against amon's follower's mech). He is also shown to get quickly overwhelmed by an opponent with non bender skills and weaponry such as amon's followers. He is very resourceful for sure, but he doesn't hold up against zuko

The reason why I did go in depth with their ability is because that is very arbitrary, both are on the same tier. Zuko is a better martial artist yes, but mako is very agile and good at using his environment to his advantage. Zuko is also a better martial artist than Azula. That never seemed useful against her. I don’t see how walking and climbing for hours while sustaining fire would help him. Mako was never shown/portrayed to not be in control of his fire. I’m sure if the plot needed him to sustain fire he would have too. Part of Zuko’s arc was perfecting his bending because is wasn’t perfect to begin with. We never saw Azula improving her bending abilities cause she didn’t need to, she was an excellent bender already and so was Mako. If there was a fire bending scale from Novice Advanced Competent Proficient Expert mako, Azula and Zuko would all be expert. Who wins depends on mostly plot.... but still a great advantage. Mako and Azula are very agile but Zuko can keep up with them Zuko is an excellent martial artist but Azula and Mako can also hold their own against sword user (using swords in not rare). the only *clear* advantage is lightning bending.

First of all I would also say Zuko wins (as most comments do, i didnt finish the video yet, so I dont know what the conclusion is on that one). BUT I say Zuko wins because you have to actually compare the times it is set in: Fire- and Lightningbending evolved over the years a lot (thats why there are so many lightning benders in Korra that they literally work with that ability) - in general in Korras Times there are much more bending techniques actually evolved so I feel like that is not too good for a comparison. Literally every second person can lightning- or metalbend (which as we know only toph could do in Aang).
Durability should go to Zuko, the amount of times the Gaang hit him in S1 should’ve put him down but he ended up still alive and without permanent brain damage.

I think the lightning bending in Korra's era is less powerful than Aang's, in Aang's era lightning bending is depicted as a fearsome form of lethal firebending and can easily kill someone, but in Korra's era lightning bending lost its art and meaning which makes it not as powerful

Sure he's fast with it but it doesn't do much damage. Azula on the other hand almost killed aang and zuko, both of them needing weeks of recovery afterwards. Lightning bending in LoK is mainly used to generate electricity, so they trade power and lethality for stability and continuous use. And even then, it's not instant, yes he doesn't make much movements, but he still needs time to charge and aim. And when he needs to generate powerful lightning like when he was overcharging the vines, it took him time
Honestly the fire nation’s biggest weakness was the fact that they never worked on understanding the nations they were trying to conquer. If they did every fire bender would be way stronger than they were.

Makos probably the fastest lighting generator, faster than Zuko can redirect. I mean there’s no way mako isn’t a lighting bending prodigy! Mako just seems exponentially more dangerous to me, because much like Zuko he doesn’t hold back yet hes still more dangerous. Keep in mind, Mako in lok was the same age as Zuko towards the end of atla. Like this guy doesn’t think twice about killing anybody, even crazy ass Azula was more merciful then he is. zuko wins easily because mako was raised on the streets and therefore never received much of any professional firebending lessons or teachings. zuko was raised in the royal palace, had all of the best and most skilled teachers, and even experienced connecting with the dragons, the original firebenders. mako had none of these opportunities, making it impossible for him to truly stand a chance.

Zuko by a landslide it’s not even a question bro has been going toe to toe with azula for majority of his life and is considered a very skilled fire bender. And azula is way more then anything mako has dealt with in Korra.
Mako is more clear-headed and determined to win. Mako's battle IQ is better. Mako won most every battle not because he is the stronger bender, but because he's quick to capitalize on situations and opponent's weaknesses. If I ever wanted to recruit secret agent, I would choose Mako over Zuko.
Zuko's battle code relies heavily on his own morals, righteousness, and honor. Every fight he fought is all about putting his very soul at the center of the conflict. This has it flaws. He would more likely to lose in elements of surprise. And he would over-extended just because he wanted to prove his strength. But people are more easily to put trusts in him this way. And that's what being the new fire lord is all about.
Zuko's stealth and infiltration abilities are nearly unmatched in Avatar. Dude sneaks in nations, prisons, fortresses, palaces and does what he needs to do and is gone. Youuu...don't want that on your team?
One point I'd like to make about Mako's lightning is that perhaps it happens faster because he usually doesn't take the time to charge it up like Azula and Ozai are often seen doing, which would account for it being weaker. The one time he needed to charge it was in the final episode, and he took his time in doing so. So perhaps the weaker bolts aren't so much a case of Mako being weaker, but Mako having more control or not having enough time to charge it up (ie, versus Amon while being bloodbent or while being attacked by Ming-Hua).
I think it's more a question of intent than anything else. In ATLA lightningbending is the ultimate firebending move, the most lethal one only known by the elite and only used with the intent to kill. So in ATLA they charge it until they think it will kill and then release. Ozai for example being a master of it was able to almost instantly launch a lethal blast right after the eclipse, showing that charging time is dependent on the mastery.
In LoK, lightningbending is most commonly used to generate electricity. In that case the priorities are low intensity continuous blasts to avoid damaging the machinery and mast an entire workday. Mako who is more used to this style of lightningbending carries it over when he fights, delivering fast blasts but with low intensity and the ability to make continuous blasts. The only time his lightning did severe damage was against ming hua who was covered by water in the middle of a lake, so it was not on his own. We see him charging for a long time in the finale to produce high intensity lightning, so we can be sure in assessing that he is not very proficient with this style of bending and would not try to use it in fights

His versatility with firebending, especially after embracing Iroh advice of studying and incorporating the other elements, give him an diverse tool set that will give Mako trouble. But even then zuko showed more than capable of performing quick bending too. His "instant" bending which he primarly uses and was only able to knock back amon despite being point blank. And his more pwerful bending tht he used to overstimulate the vines to the point the destroyed themselves. This bending as you can see if you rewatch the scene takes a long time to charge, as long or longerr than any ATLA lightning bending we've seen. So either mako does not deal enough damage to end the fight with his lightning, or he leaves himself wide open.
Azula beating zuko is not an anti feat for zuko, azula was raised in the same conditions as zuko and has even more raw talent. Then you've also got to take into account their mindset at the time. Zuko only gained a stable mindset that allowed him to use the full range of his abilities after he discovered dragon fire. So all his feats of "easily" (only aang beatss him "easily" when he's at full health but whatever) don't matter as they were alays a result of his recklessness.
Firelord zuko contends (although gets consistently beaten but puts up a hell of a fight) with azula once she overcomes her mental illness, that azula being even stronger than before and having access to wild lightning bending feats.
Zuko is a better martial artist than mako, being able to take on many skilled benders with only his swords. Zuko was taught true firebending which allowed him to in the span of days, at most weeks, go from getting recked by azula to stalemating with her on the airship. He also showed way more control over his bending than mako, sustaining fire for hours while walking and climbing, and using his breathe to retain his firebending in an area specifically made to prevent firebending. Those are all skills that mako is not shown to have and prove zuko's more advanced level.
I'd also like you to point out one time where mako redirected lightningbending. The only time I could find is when he redirects the electricity from the mech. Electricity that very obviously is not on the same level as the lethal lightning zuko is used to given that mako survived it without any injury despite only starting to redirect it later.
Mako is a very proficient athlete, but when it comes to a real fight, he gets constantly overpowered by his opponents, only ahcieving victory by using his environment (against ming hua) or in an extreme pinch (against amon's follower's mech). He is also shown to get quickly overwhelmed by an opponent with non bender skills and weaponry such as amon's followers. He is very resourceful for sure, but he doesn't hold up against zuko

The reason why I did go in depth with their ability is because that is very arbitrary, both are on the same tier.

to be fair, Zuko can tanked and lived through a Sozin comet boosted lighting from Azula. sure it knocked him out, but th that was like he is out of stance, had to improvise on the fly to help bailed Katara out of Azula surprised attack. and remember he take Ozai(who at the time the greatest fire bender) surprise lightning and redirected it.

First of all I would also say Zuko wins (as most comments do, i didnt finish the video yet, so I dont know what the conclusion is on that one).
BUT I say Zuko wins because you have to actually compare the times it is set in: Fire- and Lightningbending evolved over the years a lot (thats why there are so many lightning benders in Korra that they literally work with that ability) - in general in Korras Times there are much more bending techniques actually evolved so I feel like that is not too good for a comparison. Literally every second person can lightning- or metalbend (which as we know only toph could do in Aang).
Durability should go to Zuko, the amount of times the Gaang hit him in S1 should’ve put him down but he ended up still alive and without permanent brain damage.
