  • The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is looking to replace the Puma helicopter, with four companies shortlisted to manufacture the replacement.
    As well as replacing the Puma, the new helicopter is expected to be able to incorporate three existing helicopter requirements into one platform-type.
    One of the four finalists is the AW149 helicopter, built by Leonardo.
    Leonardo's Senior Test Pilot, Lee Evans, demonstrates at the MOD-shortlisted helicopter.

    If it can be ordered without the annoying, distracting background music, I think it'll do a good job.

    Are Forces News going to do the same for the other contenders as it seems like a bit of publicity for this product otherwise - this is the 3rd video featuring this aircraft but no videos for any of the others

    I love the monotone repetitive music in the background, like a budget music video but worse

    This seems too good which means the MOD will go for a slightly cheaper option that has half the capability but will actually also cost double in the end

    It would be lovely reporting to cover the Airbus H175M in a video as well. This AW149 and the H175M are the two major contenders for Britain's Medium Lift Capability, covering the both would be nicely informative.

    This has only been short listed.
    Why not wait until it has been selected (or another platform) so people know what that are getting.
    Currently these are just adds for only one Tenderer and I've yet to see anything from other Tenders - is this appropriate, giving free exposure to 1 supplier and potentially shape decision makers, given that you are a wing of the MoD?

    We will need 50 of them, could probably survive with 30 but the government will buy 14.

    Serviceability, air transportability, GSE requirements in the field. Actual battlefield survivability, c of g stability, body on armour etc. Lovely talk about aircrew requirements, actual battlefield helicopter abilities seem to be a little lacking.

    I think that Blackhawk helicopter is much suitable for UK's medium lift helicopter requirement because it has a battle proven airframe and it will add-on to interoperability between US-UK forces.

    • @Jrhoney
      @Jrhoney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not to mention the Blackhawk has a very wide capability portfolio and has benefitted from decades of development and operational experience. The US would probably give the UK a screaming deal on all they can take.

    • @jamesbartlett5640
      @jamesbartlett5640 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Whist it maybe a good helicopter, it’s also a 20th century one and been flying since 70s, AW149 could be the new modern 21st century Blackhawk. Best one to ask about AW149 be Egyptian Navy and Royal Thai Army.

    • @Tony.D33
      @Tony.D33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jamesbartlett5640 The Americans have just released a 21st century Blackhawk. this will have all of the updated capabilities. The AW149 has never been battle tested and it biggest use this far has been air ambulance.

    • @andywilliams7323
      @andywilliams7323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Blackhawk has some significant disadvantages against the AW149.
      The AW149's interior is bigger than the Blackhawk's interior, despite the Blackhawk being the bigger helicopter overall. Consequently, the AW149 can carry more troops and stretchers, than the Blackhawk can. The AW149 is faster, more manoeuvrable and more modern than the Blackhawk. The AW149 is also much more efficient than the Blackhawk, with a notably longer fuel range and endurance. Although a little more expensive to buy, the AW149 is much cheaper to operate and maintain than the Blackhawk.
      If chosen, all AW149 production and maintenance will be done in the UK, massively benefitting the UK and its economy. If the Blackhawk is chosen, it will be produced in Poland.

    • @jamesbartlett5640
      @jamesbartlett5640 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tony.D33 You can only upgrade it for so much it's still a 20th century helicopter, and like the Blackhawks it had to be battle tested at some point etc. In UK the Air Ambulance use the smaller AW169 with HM Coastguard using the AW189

    • @andywilliams7323
      @andywilliams7323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, although Italian-owned and produced in Italy, the design and development of the AW149 is British. If the British military chooses the AW149 as its new medium helicopter replacement. Leonardo will move all production of the AW149 from Italy to the UK.

    • @nicho3051
      @nicho3051 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andywilliams7323 No, the design and development is Italian. The AW149 is just a further evolution of the AW139, formally known as the AB139. Britain/Westland didn’t actually design anything. This is a fully Italian helicopter, it’s just being proposed to the UK.
