You defo helped me made up my mind, and I will be getting one of these myself. I dont live in UK though, so I will be ordering from the UK store (no international delivery) and sending/delivering the laptop to a friend of mine, who lives in the UK, and she will then send it to where I live. If you still have the box of the laptop, can you tell me the physical dimensions of the box? I m trying to estimate the delivery costs from UK to where I live, and need the dimensions. Tried searching on the net, couldn't find it. From your video, and the dimensions of the laptop itself, i can tell more or less how big is the box, but was thinking, if you still have it and can measure it for me, would be much appreciated. Thanks in any case.
You only got a like because your video is well done. For the product it self it's absolute trash, not just me but many had this unit burn out for no reason, a recall should have been done. Then they send me a replacement with a used broken RTX 2080 even though I had accidental damage and the unit was lass then a year old. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT you will regret. I really only looked at this unit because of the name Dell and can tell you the company has (0 Integrity) I have a video on the making with an explanation why no one should buy dell Products.

Ive been looking for a review on this lappy for 2 months...google suggested it for me one breakfast morning. Its exactly what I was looking for with detail, nice closeups and not all those usual 10 minute reviews where they say 2 good things and 2 bad things and a way they go. Loved it Anology, Well done!

Hey thanks for your comment, yeah, it makes a pretty big difference to the performance being plugged in vs batteries. I’ve got a big video coming up with all the optimisations of the Area 51m to get max performance. I’ve got big segment in there that shows all the before / after benchmarks with different configurations. 😉

I believe the reason alienware went with dual power supplies is due to a maximum allowed wattage per power supply when traveling through customs in certain countries. I don't think dell is the first to do this either, but my memory is fuzzy regarding this.

Yeah but you’d only get full GFX power if you had an RTX2060 graphics card option as that is 2x 180w isn’t it? I know since making the video where I show each of the power supplies that I’ve realised my 330w psu from M18x doesn’t seem to charge my A51m?

Yeah I know what you mean, same for me when I first bought My M18x was around 6 months later they totally changed it up - although if I hadn’t have bought that, I would never have got my Area 51m from the insurance company 😉 as they say, it’s never a good time to buy a computer, however, I think because the Area 51m is a completely new range, it will be a while before an r2 and even when it is, it will be probably nothing more than maybe some new display options and a couple of cosmetics changes to justify the next revision number 😎
@@Andology As per some rumors, Alienware will launch 4k panel in December for A51m, though i am not very excited about that. I guess it's time to buy. Grt reviews though. Keep it up!! Cheers.

I think it was the part 2 Area 51m review where I mentioned my logic for choosing the dark side of the moon - just the glare from bright light being a distraction like a white bezel around an iPad - don’t like it and plus, other peripherals in my office are all a similar color so it fits in more.. I really like the lunar light, I fear people will assume its an apple lol. But I do think the light colour is sexy - the dark version still stands out and looks unique thanks to the *_Tron_* light at the back 😉

So a year later and area 51m users are differentiated between R1 and R2. That's right they developed a new model for an upgradable laptop. Why that makes no sense you may ask? And you know what, you're absolutely RIGHT. R1 users aren't given the opportunity to upgrade to the newer chipset that comes with R2 , NO motherboard upgrades to utilize Intel's new 10 series chipset. So basically they lied. They cheated. They failed.
HELP💕😂 Andy What hard drive should I get on my Alienware 51m? It’s for the Sims 4 game. With lots of mods and custom content. I don’t play any other games. I don’t understand the different drives.
On 9:23 you mention the vents on the 2060 are just for show, but that's incorrect, that happens when you get the 8th gen i7... Not the graphics card. And actually the 8th gen processor isn't available to be purchased anymore on the Area 51 model. At least in the United States.

This laptop isnt worth it. Its the companies way of getting excess money from your pockets. Its almost 4 times the price of a regular gaming laptop with such specs. You can check out eluctronics

Regarding you 2 ac adapters haveing different kettle plug connectors only reason come to mind is the plug possibility have different fuse sizes in them ie stop you accidentally putting kettle lead higher fuse rating into the lower running ac adapter and burning it out

@@ddxxbb1 8 hours is near impossible for a gaming laptop. This thing gets to two hours maximum, usually around 1.5 hours

I read some horror story's about these at the start of this year smoking and setting alright for several people. Most common with the rtx 2080 model, apparently an issue with the oem 2080's..does anyone know if Dell ever found and fixed the issue?

When you check your ssd manufactures, you will find the put the sega sata ssd on your laptop which should not be put on this price range laptop. $85 cheap and slow ssd. And when you paid for 9th gen intel i7 but they gave you 8tj gen instead. Although confirmed twice with the sales regarding the 9th gen i7. This happened to me and I have already asked for return and refund . It is totally a fraud.
Oh Jason I’m super sorry about your experience. It’s interesting you mention the brand of SSD, I’ve built many high end Gaming PCs and I totally agree, something like should be top end, SSDs too! I went for dual 256GB m.2 SSDs which are faster than SATA but I did wonder what brand they are.. may be time to whip the cover off and take a look! How is it looking with the refund? Is it going to play the way you want? And what you thinking of as alternatives? Thanks for sharing your experience bud :)
By the way, my Sons PC I built him as a Samsung M.2 960 pro and my main water cooling desktop rig has a Samsung V-NAND 860 Pro drive.. a couple of those 960s in RAID - Now that’s something I’d like to have in my area 51m! :) I’m sure you’ll agree, those drives are more what you’d call performance :)

Here is my experience with the Area 51m and Dell customer service. I bought it from HIDEvolution on Amazon. They apparently tell us that "It is rare for a product that we have quality checked to fail so quickly, but it does happen from time to time." They are of no help either so far.
Update: I posted the same review on Dell's website and I received an email that my review is against their guidelines. So they cannot publish my review on their website. I did not use any vulgar language or gave any inaccurate information. Tactically, they sent me the email to which I cannot reply. I am going to call them up and ask which part of my review is against their guidelines. They simply don't want us to put negativity be reviews. If they moderating what reviews we are supposed to put, what's the point in having such an option? No wonder they only have positive reviews for this laptop on the Dell's website.

If you are planning to do some serious work on your laptop. I would suggest stay away with this Area 51m. It is still in the first generation and I can see there are too many defects with this model. I am a doctoral candidate in mathematics education and bought this laptop a month ago thinking it will be perfect to render my video lectures, animation, and also might as well finish writing my thesis on it. I don't play a lot of games. The laptop was faulty from the day I received it. I had to reinstall Windows 10 to make it work. Now a week ago there are artifacts appearing on the laptop screen. I thought it is a driver's issue and updated it. It didn't help. I cannot even get into the windows desktop as all I can see a black screen and weird artifacts after login. I bought premium support from Alienware and contacted them via email. I told them how important this laptop for my academics but they didn't reply promptly. Their responses are days apart. They gave a set of tests to run to make sure it's not a big issue. They are just waiting time as after all those tests, it is apparent that I had a faulty GPU. I gave up and called the customer care and told them the issue and updated with run tests. Then they created a job order where I had to send the laptop to their repair center. I paid for premium support so there is a In-home repair service but they did not listen to this at all. They said there is no other option but to send the laptop to their facility. They promised me that end to end service time will be less than 5 business days. After four days, I received an email saying that there are some failed parts in the laptop and they don't have those parts right now, those parts MAY arrive in five business days. They have no idea how it is affecting my academics. I relied on this thinking it is a powerful computer. They are ignoring customers suffering because they will have to answer for packing defective parts. I searched Reddit and other forums only to be surprised that I am not the only victim here.
The bottom line is : buy this laptop at your own risk and don't rely on this for serious works. If you badly thinking to buy this laptop, I would wait for the next generation of this model so that they will have some time to understand customers sufferings and ensures not to pack defective parts.
Another update: I received an email saying that they may get a hold of new parts in another 4 days and if the laptop still has an issue after replacement, they are going to extend the repair time to another 10 business days. I spent more than three thousand dollars on this laptop thinking it will help with my doctoral projects. I had to spend more time in the repairing than actually work on my academics.
It has been 12 days and they still have no idea when the parts will be available. They just stopped replying my email.
This is completely my personal thoughts coming from my experiences and readings on online forums about the product.

Hi Andy, I enjoy your videos thanks for making them. Quick question, someone told me you only need the one powerbrick if your rendering as the second power brick is mainly to power the GPU. Is this correct if so how much does it effect performance? I render alot and need to travel alot so it would be good to know if I can function with just the one powerbrick if I need to render and do some 3d modelling..

Hey Darren, sorry not sure how your comment missed, please forgive me 😊 I’ve got a video coming up that will be highlighting all of the optimisations for the Area 51m along with performance tips. One of the things I’ve done is test the performance difference between battery only / one power brick / both power bricks etc and I can tell you now the difference is significant. Also, I’m not sure on your specific rendering software but for example the Adobe Suite (After Effects / Premiere Pro etc) maximise the use of the GPU (CUDA engine) for rendering. In this instance you’d most definitely want to be running with both power bricks for fastest render. However if you’ve got all night you could leave it running with just the one brick and it would be done by the time you wake up anyway 😎

I use Cinema4D for rendering which I believe uses the CPU exclusively for rendering and the GPU for viewport work. Im reckoning this laptop could be popular amongst freelance 3D designers like me so I'm sure it'll be a popular one 😊
I just looked at system bios. I also have the i9-9900 but it’s @ 3.10 GHz. Yours is at 3.60Ghz. Any idea why mine is 3.10ghz??

Great video, beautiful laptop, but I am used to playing game with the console WIN 2 in my hand.
I started out gaming on PC's (I used to run LAN gaming parties) but then spent time on PS3 when they first came out so got reasonably good with that... but if I was gaming now I think i'd prefer the accuracy of mouse / keyboard. - Although you can use XBOX controller on windows apparently but i've not tried it?

Looks like a serious gaming laptop.
I installed the FPV Drone simulator game earlier on it, i tried it on my main system and even on lowest settings and 720p it was less than 20 frames per second... this new Area 51m is like 200fps with all the settings max and 1080p!! it's actually a pretty amazing difference! Proper decent best in galaxy gaming laptop! lol - What you doing easter anyway? you coming up to see me? :)

Yeah I saw lots of people in comments sections of other review channels saying they were gonna buy the 2060 and nobody seemed to mention it.. defo deal breaker :) and my 2070 is more than good enough, especially with the i9 9900k. @@Andology Pubg is without a doubt the most popular online game at the moment, but it isn't the most demanding title out there. So maybe you should test around 3 popular games e.g. Pubg, Overwatch, and Fortnite, and mix it up with GPU hungry games, such as Assassin's Creed Origin, Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tombraider, etc.

It’s like someone who’s got a Lamborghini but can’t afford to put gas in it! ;) I keep telling my 10yr old son I’ll kick his ass on fortnite if I install that.. he still doesn’t believe me ;) just had a quick whip around with LiftOff which is pretty GPU intensive (motion blur etc). Got it running 4 monitors at the moment and seems happy.. may do quick update video showing how it’s setup - it’s got a cable coming out of every port at the moment!

I seem to remember my Alienware M18x box was much better than the new Area 51m - I've got a video i'm doing right now (i wanted to upload tonight but probably gonna be stupid o'clock in the morning knowing me ;) I'm tempted to show the user manual I got with last Alienware Laptop to compare it to the one I got with this.. major difference... The guy literally handed me the box by the handle - he wouldnt have left it outside my house or anything but I know what you mean about the markings, lets face it, how do we know the delivery guy doesnt have a friend who likes to burgle places, he'd know all the best places to go!! :) Thanks for you comment, cheers

Yeah I just got my Asus g703. I only paid 2049 and that thing was in 3 boxes lol. I wanted the a51m with the 2060 but I couldn't justify 2500 for a 2060 graphics card. Plus the thing with the side vents put me off. My g703 came with the gtx 1080 with is still significantly faster than the 2060 and the laptop came with numerous other features for cheaper. 144hz ,g sync etc.
@@coolmodee I just replaced my ASUS G752VS with a GTX1070 last month. I bought the same G703GI as you with the GTX1080. The company was selling 30 of them brand new on eBay and I made a $1500 offer and they accepted. I know its not an RTX card but the GTX1080 is a beast and will play anything out now . I play with an external monitor at 2k and it gets 85-100ish frames at 2k on ultra in most games. Over 120fps on ultra 1080. GPU never goes above 82deg and no thermal throttling. Couldn't find a better deal on the planet. The Area 51 is nice but the 2060 version is a joke and the 2070-2080s are way too expensive for something they are not 100% sure will be upgradable. I get a new laptop every year or so and I'm sure Ill still get a grand or so for this on when I sell it. For a $500 upgrade price each time, you can't go wrong. Just gotta keep watching for deals because they are out there.

@@Andology Perhaps it took so long because of the specs change maybe as its default was with Optane memory 2 128 sticks and i was like na i can not swing a cat with that so went with one 1TB NVME stick so that later if needed i could move over my Samsung EVO 970 1tb stick that i have in my PC. Yes went with the G-sync :) Overall I have been waiting a long time as its been 15 years since my last Laptop upgrade but i just had to be more mobile nearly went with ROG Zephyrus S or Mothership but when i saw the power of the 51m it was a no brainier, just a shame about that screen but perhaps one day there will be an upgrade, but i will be using 2 externals when at home :) The last Dell laptop i purchase for 2000 back in 2004 lasted me ten years before the daughters broke it im assuming this one will last me fore ever :)
O the other thing i dont like is access to the battery, if it was accessible i probably have purchased another battery for when im working in the park :) not to sure if i trust my external battery pack might give it a go after some research "MAXOAK Ultra High Capacity 50000mAh 6 port (5/12/20v) Portable Charger External Battery Pack Power Bank for Laptop" but with a quick google it doesnt look good :(
Sounds like a very similar story to me with your daughter busting your last Dell laptop ;) (I’m assuming you saw the ‘$5k Alienware Destroyed’ video, classic!) There’s no way I could afford to buy this myself right now, hell I could barely afford to replace the hard drive at the moment), I was ‘lucky’ that I managed to convince the insurance company that the equivalent Alienware to my old M18x that got destroyed is the new Area 51m ;) I’m hoping this one will last me 10 years like yours! Hey you, thanks dude. I have looked at the GS75 - the Alienware would usually always come out a little more expensive than most other high end laptops, but It isn’t really the same thing - there’s no 9900k i9 option, and do keep in mind that the Area51m uses *desktop* components - so the GPU in the Area 51m is desktop version, not scaled down Max-q lower power equivalent GPU. Same with the CPU - Area 51m uses desktop version with full 95w power. So however much more on the price for the area 51m at least it is upgradable in the future so it’s way more future proof than the MSI - I bought mine for the exact intended use - Desktop Replacement laptop, I’m 3D animator too (see examples in my videos) so we have similar use cases.. my next part 2 of the review will probably be worth watching, I’m trying to get it uploaded tonight I hope :) thanks for your comment

That’s a tricky question.. something that I know I’m going to have to live with for potentially 5 years maybe, I think I may actually rather sell a few other things on eBay to raise the extra few hundred bucks to go with the one that will serve me the best into the future (Area 51m) - my logic (as an ex-sales trainer lol) would be to say if the Alienware is $250 more than the MSI, over 5 years, that works out at only $1 per week more to use the Area 51m every day, rather than the MSI every day ;) but either way, I do like the GS75 - it’s pretty sexy looking, and the spec is pretty good. I just love the desktop components element of the Area 51m - more upgradable = more future friendly - its a big investment so I want max long term ROI :)

I did take it over to the house on just battery power and must say the battery level did seem to go down pretty quick but I haven’t done a full test of time running a movie or something, I’ll do that and record the results :)

Rich Murphy Thanks for your positive feedback, my sister lives in Toronto, we went there a year or two ago, beautiful country! :) i didn’t mention anything on my previous videos but after I ordered my Area 51m, the status turned to ‘processing’ or something, and then a few days later it had a message in red text saying it was delayed, sorry for any inconvenience etc... I called them up and they had run out of a few components “due to higher than expected demand”...that got me worried... around 5 days later it was still saying delayed so I called the guy again at Alienware (the guy I got the $500+ discount from) and he said it would be sorted the next day.. I didn’t believe him, but sure enough, the next day, it said “shipped”!! (That’s about the time I made the video lol). I bet you can’t wait for it to turn up, was it good to see how my experience was unboxing? Let me know if I could have shown anything else in the part 1 :) cheers bud
Andology Thanks for the reply yes it shows processing, been like that since I ordered, it also says my delivered date is the 17th but is doesn’t show shipped. I purchased a mouse at the same time and it was here last Tuesday.
@@richmurphy5647 Hmm, i think if it was delayed like mine it'd have the red text saying "Sorry, there is a delay in ..." etc. I think was maybe 7 or 8 days of sitting waiting to ship, then once it said shipped it was 5 days max. My expected delivery date started off as 29th March and stayed the same even when it was a week past that date it still said expected receive date as 29th lol... I'm really only just playing with it today and yesterday - couldn't do much with it while I was filming...currently trying to work out how to record stero mic - seems to always be mono when I play it back... i'll figure it out ;) Let me know when it arrives your end!

Hey you, welcome back :) - yeah i like the keyboard - originally wanted vid to be like 6-7 mins but.... well... lol.. I'll get into the keyboard more on the next one, even that one I may have to break into 2, i'm making notes on the things I want to mention and it's loads already and not even used it for more than 4 hours yet!.. I'm not really seeing any squishyness - not unless you're pressing hard as hell (which you'd never do while typing anyway) - feels pretty solid to me. Most of the music I use if from a large collection I built from Digital Juice - they're called stack traxx or something. little dated but great for short 15-30 second music textures etc - if i'm doing Logo intro for client i'll usually buy something specific and enhance / modify with other music layers (audiojungle.net) Pleased you liked the video! be also blessed :)
@@Andology- One thing I have noticed when it comes to those "reviewers" who get a test machine from Alienware - If the reviewer has had, historically, a positive experience with Alienware, then they are more likely to have a positive spin in the review. Then there are the reviewers who will never like Alienware, for whatever reason. Those reviews, though beneficial in their own way, often times are much more critical in the review. Such is the case of the "squishy" keyboard review. Using the device in a way that it wouldn't normally be used to show a weakness isn't a valid review. A monkey, might provide a better review at that point. You're doing a great job presenting the facts - I've even shared your channel on a couple other reddit and hardware forum threads. -

Your on camera presence and presentation are "A+", but I'm just a "colonist" so what do I know. HAHAHA - More Jokes. For several years I worked for a Japanese laptop manufacturer and at one point I was the guy who custom configured and optimized the "samples" that were sent out to the "reviewers". I would make sure to point out, in every email and in the NDA that they signed, as well as a note taped to the "sample" that the laptop was an engineering "sample". Specifically stating that the unit was pre-production unfinished metals/plastics. One particular reviewer who seemed to have the ability to write but did not have the ability to read, would always review the plastics as garbage. Duuu.. Not on the comments of your giveaway video.. YET.. - I'll check it out..
Wow! I can’t believe that’s what you used to do for the reviewers?! Sounds like you’re pretty familiar with PC specs too then! I’m super touched by your comments, it really gives me motivation to bring more and more (talking of which shooting next clip in a minute after my shower, just got back from Karate lessons!) Shame you’re not still doing that job, it’s fascinating to hear how it goes down. I’ve been sent some VR goggles to review about a year ago but they messed up sending me the right stuff, then they wanted me to pay to ship them back to them, so I ignored them, a set turned up anyway several months later, I tried them out and they were a bit crap so decided maybe not best one to do.. I still may do the review, they are more relevant to FPV quadcopter / drone flyer than actual VR goggles in terms of 3d VR.

@@hariprasanth6812 I think it's beautiful and perfectly silent for doing 'normal work' - I do all kinds of media based marketing / sales solutions so i'm designing websites, graphic design, video production, 3D animations etc etc so it's super powerful for all that.. I've got another video coming hopefully in the next 24 hours showing more and how I have it set up as my main editing / design rig on my desk - Which is why they call it a desktop replacement :) It's basically a desktop PC that you pay a bit extra for so that it has a screen attached and you can carry it around :) perfect! Wow thanks for your reply . I apologize for my typing mistake. I was going to type sata ssd though. I actually didn’t inspect the laptop myself but my friend who helped me to wait for the laptop did. He checked it with hardware detecting softwares and shown the ssd is sata. He opened up the back vending lid to try to check the ssd . I wish I could upload the pictures for the ssd. It didn’t have any brand or models information on it but a qr quote and a serial number. And the cpu is 8700 not 9th gen i7 which I ordered and confirmed with the sales twice before and after placing the order.When I made the order, I wouldn’t expect this..... the sales team ensured my order will arrive before my plane’s departure lol . It arrived two weeks after I left for UK. But the sales team did a good job on the order statue update while the customer care team kept asked me to cancel my order (I was asked to cancel order 11 times and told if I couldn’t wait with very unfriendly attitude).All the help and updates are from the sales team. Thank you very much for your recommendation I will try it on my Metabox prime x p 775 . They did higher specs and better cooling system and much much better customer service and tech support at similar price.
And I was banned from dell’s community after I put my experience on their Alienware forums. Dell’s customers service is GREAT!

All specs on mine match according to the BIOS but not actually looked ‘under the hood’ yet.. lol, it’s a bit severe getting banned from the Dell community website :) at least you got their attention! ;)
Btw, my order was put into public segment by customer care for refusing help on updating order statue as the delivery was late for almost two weeks by what the sales promised. . The customer care guy called siti just said my order is in public account which is non of their business. This is the most ridiculous customer care service I have ever had...... hope you guys will never have such experience....

You can install windows from USB Thumbdrive nowadays and most applications you download now so not too many uses for DVD / CD-ROM drive ;) I’ve still got a few things on Disc though so I had to get the external one

How long did it actually to for the computer to reach you counting from the order date? I ordered mine on the 25th of March and the only shipping update is that it's waiting for an update in the shipping hub in Denmark. (I live in Sweden)
Hey you, thanks for your comment - When i made the order it gave me a shipping date of 29th March - but around 4 or 5 days later I checked the tracker and it had red text saying something like "Sorry, your order is delayed, we appologise for any inconvenience..." etc. I called the guy at Dell that I dealt with when ordering it and he said they had parts shortage due to higher than expected demand... then maybe 4 days after that I checked again and still red text... I called dell again and they said the problem was sorted and it would ship the following day... I didn't believe them, but sure enough, when I checked the tracker the next day it said shipped - this was perhaps 10 days or so after making the order, 14 days max. It took around 4 days to get here from that point... Doesn't sound like yours is delayed though or you'd see the red text warning - What spec you go for? :)

I really enjoyed your account of battling against the insurance company as I have also gone through that process more than once due to clumsy kids killing both my tv and computer. I actually ordered the full RTX2080 w the 9900K and the rest of the specs are the same as yours. My sales rep. gave me a hefty discount of 20% so it was ok. My actual delivery date says the 7th of May but the sales rep. told me that it would be here yesterday but as it has still not arrived in Europe I think he was a tad over optimistic.

@@Andology Yeah will probably be great, comes with DIvision 2 so I will play that and maybe try out FarCry5. After that mostly World of Tanks as it is my staple drug. WIll also try some photo editing which of couse will be no problem, so tired of my old laptop with a dead battery so every time I pull the cord it dies on me! Looking forward to your full review, have seen others but you remind me of my friend so it's relaxing to watch!
