Outstanding info. Right on point of how I have deployed a shield for the last 12 years. Everything he disclosed is pretty much where you want to be. I do advocate a device with a d ring on your gun belt to hold the shield in place for long deployments holding a hallway or to give your bicep a break.

I know that handlheldsbballistic shields would never be feasible for use in modern warfare, but do you think that portable ballistic cover can be used effectively in modern fighting tactics in strategies? If yes, how would you think that would look? Who would use it? What happens if a military with portable ballistic cover went up against a stronger and more developed infantry?

      I know it`s a old question.
First you have to define what "modern warfare" is.
Conventional or unconventional. Small and limited or full conflict? Covert or overt?
Crowd control / riot control are part of warface/conflicts and european militaryies are/were trained in it (when deployed to northern ireland and the balkans, i`m not sure if it was part for the training in afghanistan too but that`s very possible with some of the riots that happened in front of the bases (i`m aware of one case where the guards got thrown a handgranade into their position in such a "peacefull protest" (both made it out alive in that one).
When military is used like in iraq at the time of the insurgency there is a place for ballistic shields for entry teams. BOPE in brasil for example uses shields.
As for "future warfare" the big + in shields i see is the blocking of the heat signature and pussible camouflage (normal "painting" or advanced with mini cameras and/or the projection of a hologram). Either carried mobile or stationary to establish or reinforce cover& concealment.
As for the "stronger & more developed infantry". How does that look? When i think of that i see infantry with armored fighting vehicles with remote controlled weapons stations on it (the smallest 7.62x51 but more likely .50 cal, 30mm autocannon, 40 mm grenade launcher and up). There has been quite a developement in recent years in regards to guns for infantry that need 1 shooter which uses explosives that can take it up with infantry, field fortifications and even armored vehicles.
One of the older and bigger ones is the Karl Gustav recoless rifle but also lighter stuff like the inkunzi paw or the new rheinmetall 40mm grenade launcher, which looks kind of like an assault rifle.
On a battlefield as deadly as this (not to forget the new smart optics of guns and drones) one of the primary roles for infantry might become to spot for all kinds of indirect fire weapons (the 60mm breach loading mortar the south africans have on their badger fighting vehicle for example is scary, not to forget the modern 120mm mortars. The german armored infantry (Panzergrenadiere) have a system where they are linked to the vehicle and the vehicle crew can decide to see what the individual infantry guy sees (who is part of the squad, maybe even platoon or higher up and target indicate and communicate in realtime with a tablet that can be used to gove&recieve orders e.g. targetdesignate targets for direct and indirect heavyer weapons, but also to paint on a digital real time map where you can see your own side, if they are connected like on computer game maps. Not sure if they hava already intigrated drone and other cameras and/or radar (that can detect infantry like the russians have) to put the enemies on the map too. If i`m informed right there are even glasses which project the distances to points of people into the eye but i`m not sure if that`s only a thing for vehicle crew or also the dismounts.

@@mrd7067 as much as I would like to engage you on this comment, I'm on my phone and I don't have the writing power to respond to all of that. But I hear you and I appreciate your piece on the subject. You talked a lot about the future of infantry detection (and communication?) mechanisms.
I understand that in the current times there's a push towards being more adapted to combat in urban areas. That's a different map from the "open field" I talked about earlier. I've since developed on the shield shebang, and I have come up with basically two different types of it: the more typical handheld shields used for offending and maneuvering troops, and "mobile frontal cover" with mounted guns and camera scopes for holding and fire pinning. I'm not going to go into their formations and fighting tactics which is only for infantry battle on the open field anyway. For urban warfare where were talking tanks walking the streets a different style or fighting is needed. I don't see to useful a point for mobile cover as there would be much simpler to armor up attack stations and readying traps on the streets or large entryways. After that set up (possibly powered) connectors so things can be moved around and formations can be changed easily. I also raise the idea of using deployable balloons for the sake of overhead observation, fighting and AA combat. That is if the enemy decides to bring in helicopters. I'd show them how to hover. Overall urban warfare is quite a new area to explore.
As for the invaders, shields aren't going to help you if you can't get up close to the house or building to raid it. Your best bet is to go home and stay out of people's neighborhood.

      It`s not just urban areas.
In germany we have 4 kind of infantry
      airborne infantry - Fallschirmjäger
      armored infantry - Panzergrenadiere
"light infantry" - Jäger (now getting restructured simmilar to the US striker brigades)
      mountain infantry - Gebirgsjäger
      airforce security (protection of objects/bases)
marine infantry - way wmaller and different roles than the USM.
Of all this to my understanding only the armored infantry and "Jäger" units get the communication system connection down to the individual on squad level.
Their intended use is with their heavy vehicles (Boxer IFV or Puma) and with that primary in peer to peer conflicts. To my understanding the heavy guns on this vehicles are so strong that they can be used to shoot through several buildings or through walls and then explode inside like a handgrenade.
Yes they are trained for urban stuff (more the Jäger than the Panergrenadiere) but they are more suited for central european rural stuff and with their modern optics and other things like sensors they`d probably be quite effective on the flat areas seeen in ukraine at the moment as well.
      Can you describe "attack stations"?
I don`t understand that concept. I was in a airborne engineer unit and we made houses "defendable" in training but in all seriousness modern (even old) 120mm mortars (now guided and with direct and indirect fire capability, the most modern don`t even have to stop but can drive on while doing it) will blow up most of a house.
The mortar round is so heavy it will hit through the roof, several floors (if armored or not) and then explode in the inside.
Out infantry has something called "Pazerfaust 3". It`s against tanks but with different ammo it`s called "Bunkerfaust" against bunkers and people in buildings.
It makes a small hole on the outside and the explosive energy goes in like a chape charge of a tank. Hard if not impossible to armor up against that since it`s time delayed. And that`s just cold war weapon which also has been given to ukraine.
There are newer, more effective ones and one of them can be used to open up new ways into buildings (so you don`t have to take the wall down with a tank, heavy construction machinery of blow it up by combat engineers).
The balloons were a thing in afghanistan. They were over the bases with cameras that could look, i think 10s of km away.
Urban warfare exists since cities exist. Technologies change as the way conflicts are solved though.
There are severals video of/with urban warfare specalist John Spencer on yt which are quite educational.
In my pov the biggest thing is the intensity of conficts.
From Stalingrad 2.0 with new technologies and scale to the Favelas in Rio de Janero or Tijuana when the war on cartels started or ISIS, the RAF, IRA, Hezbollah or Aleppo and Grozny are all different kind of urban conflicts.
Imagine them with the new technoogies and some of them were not that long ago / are still going on but they don`t have the high high tech stuff yet.
When the infamous Dirlewanger Brigade entered Warsaw they were reinforced with new troops twice their size or so and after they were done less than half of the original size was left in total (i have to look the actual numbers up i have it in a book here somewhere, that`s a thing that gets hardly ever discussed).

well I was really talking about mobile ballistic cover, not the police riot shields like shown in the video. Now rather than a Handheld shield, how would a ground all terrain shield work in an open battlefield. One that
•can deal with the highest rated rifle rounds
•is transparent as a riot shield so it can be seen through
      •has a concealable gun port
•has side panels(and a small top panel) that can protect flanks
•top side can rotate backwards to give quicker back protection if needed
•bullet marks are visible so the defender can analyse the shot and locate where he was attacked from
Now how do you think that would fare in open battlefield. What drawbacks would it have if it was incorporated into a paramilitary or militia???
