Well the raven is a wicked bird His wings are black as sin And he floats outside my prison window Mocking those within And he sings to me real low It's hell to where you go For you did murder Kate McCannon When I first met TomMcCannon I was working in the mines Said he had himself a dark haired daughter With long, green eyes And when she and I did meet She was bathing in the creek Prettiest girl in the whole damn holler That ain't no lie So I went a courtin' Kate McCannon Got me a job and I quit my ramblin' and Every day I'd save A quarter of my pay I could buy a diamond ring Lord and one day I come home to find My darlin' angel's not inside So I made for the creek Where she and I did meet And found her with some other lover And I put three rounds into Kate McCannon
This is a fucking masterpiece .... From the voice .... To the way he strums the guitar ... From the storyline ... Starts out by telling people he is in prison already .. Then goes on to tell how he ended up there.... Then when he found her with another lover the long pause with the strums getting heavier like anger ... To the three booms for the three rounds .... Its a masterpiece... you can feel the pain with his voice ...
Anybody else notice that he’s foreshadowing with the beat/guitar??? “Then I put three rounds into Kate McCannon…” *boom boom boom* just like we heard in earlier verses. GENIUS
And the way the guitar builds there, really good. only thing I add sometimes when I play is 3 whacks on the guitar body after the the line ends. It's cheesy maybe but he did something special, made real art here.
i have to say, this COMPLETELY blows the spotify version out of the water. there's far more depth! the guitar work is incredibly expressive, the continuous bass drum has that signature colter wall feel, the vocals aren't so monotonous - they're comparatively bright even. if the lyrics were in a foreign language, you would still be able to tell that there's a story being told. the studio version is missing pretty much all of that. it's seriously making me wish these sessions were up on spotify, but it is what it is D:

@@sitnstill4now Your comment saying you liked the thread I started is what brought me back here. Now I find this comment and can't help but smile. Nothing like good music to get us all on the same page. Cheers amigo
Holy hell! I don’t normally comment on songs, and normally get annoyed by the people who way over evaluate it. I’m not doing that, I don’t think, but I have to say it. The way, during the climax, Colter goes from soft acoustic to raging strumming like the blood pressure of his story’s character rising right before firing off those three shots (which are even represented a few seconds later with the FREAKING DRUM), it’s amazing. There’s a complete story arc and guitar that fills in the spots where most other musicians would use meaningless lyrical filler. I commend you, sir. THIS. IS. COUNTRY.
This might just be me but i think its so cool that after he sings the final line about the 3 rounds the guitar stops and then he strums it 3 times to represent the 3 rounds love that
This is perfect. The incongruity of his deep voice, the darkness of the lyrics, the patience in building tension in the story and that little smirk/smile at the end. 💯💯
The framing of the close up where his hat covers his eyes and all you see is his mouth growling into the mic is something the video team should be proud of. And not just because it’s cool, but because it pays off at 3:33
Interesting thing about Colter Wall is when covid hit and all concerts were canceled, he went to work on a ranch as a real cowboy. More western than any other western performer in the whole market.
And when joe Rogan requested to have him on the podcast colters agent told him he is busy in the ranch try again later.. words from joes mouth on a podcast
There's something about loving a girl like in these lyrics that hurts so much. Imagine going to the place where you fell in love with that girl and seeing her with someone else. That would shred every emotion you had to pieces. Lyrical genius.

One of the greatest songs I've ever heard. Powerful, passionate, and heartbreaking. A perfect murder ballad. I love this guy.
With no comparison at all, just out of a common love of murder ballads: Have you heard Sierra Ferrell - Rosemary?
Listen to some Chris Knight
This man is among the best at killin songs

Well the raven is a wicked bird
His wings are black as sin
And he floats outside my prison window
Mocking those within
And he sings to me real low
It's hell to where you go
For you did murder Kate McCannon
When I first met TomMcCannon
I was working in the mines
Said he had himself a dark haired daughter
With long, green eyes
And when she and I did meet
She was bathing in the creek
Prettiest girl in the whole damn holler
That ain't no lie
So I went a courtin' Kate McCannon
Got me a job and I quit my ramblin' and
Every day I'd save
A quarter of my pay
I could buy a diamond ring
Lord and one day I come home to find
My darlin' angel's not inside
So I made for the creek
Where she and I did meet
And found her with some other lover
And I put three rounds into Kate McCannon
Thank you 0:43

Country music had needed someone like him again for a long time. Hard to listen to other country music after listening to him.
I’ve got colter and Chris Stapleton in my country repertoire and that’s it
I wouldn’t call this country, this is like old school western folk music

This is a fucking masterpiece .... From the voice .... To the way he strums the guitar ... From the storyline ... Starts out by telling people he is in prison already .. Then goes on to tell how he ended up there.... Then when he found her with another lover the long pause with the strums getting heavier like anger ... To the three booms for the three rounds .... Its a masterpiece... you can feel the pain with his voice ...
Love his voice
It's a country voice
Stand up....for this country!!!
💯
Anybody else notice that he’s foreshadowing with the beat/guitar???
“Then I put three rounds into Kate McCannon…”
*boom boom boom* just like we heard in earlier verses. GENIUS
Anyone listening to this song still?
He’s definitely my favorite artist

Man that 3 rounds into Kate McCannon line got me experiencing all kinds of chills down my actual spinal column.
Jesus Christ loves you

This is 1000× better than the studio version.
Breweries will always have better acoustics than sound proof recording studios.
Brandon Patterson fer sure

damn Colter sounds like he's been drinking whiskey for 40 years. Hell of a voice man.
That's country soul I've haven't heard in a long time. How can this man not be already signed. That voice is two gold albums by itself. That passion, soul and country 🔥 . Standing Ovation
I just discovered Colter Wall today. And I haven’t turned it off. All day.
Man, I know it's simple, but that bass drum beat is so good. It adds so much to the song.
Ryan Snider it’s chilling
Just epic!
This songwriter is already a legend at 27. I get goosebumps. Every song.
I agree 👍 💯
Imagine this voice at 50
He's just 21 in this video too
I was with my sister, and just played this clip without saying anything, the melody was fine, so she started paying attention to the video, her reaction once this guy started singing was priceless, I wish I had recorded it. We're from México btw, but I really like country music.

It's a good performance, but "best ever?"

@@pbplauralfilms What's better? look up Dave Matthews Band covering All Along the Watchtower live at Central Park. I like Colter, and this is definitely a good song, but it's not even remotely close to the best live performance ever, IMO.

Lmfao I’ve been smokin em for a while now they ain’t changed nothing for me and I never expected em to. They just made it harder to hit notes and to hold em. Ruins your voice.
The magic in his voice doesn't come from cigarettes. It comes from vocal training and his diaphragm

Will be seeing Colter Wall play in Mobile Alabama in December and I super pumped. I've seen Tyler Childers 3 times before he signed his deal with Sony. Last show was with Sturgill in Birmingham before covid hit and it was a blast. Colter has been on my list for while now.. see you in December!
Help I'm addicted to Colter's music. This is about the 100th time I listened to this song this week. Same goes for "The devil wears a suit and tie"'. Holy shit this man is talented!
Not alone brother. Aint nothing wrong with being addicted to music that brings your soul to life
I learned The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie, & I've listened to it way too much, i'm starting to get tired of it lol. I'm going to not listen to it for a while and then play it and it'll be wonderful

The way he plays the guitar is as powerful as his voice amazes me

I hear he wears a live rattlesnake as a condom.
He taught me how to love a woman and how to scold a child
I once saw him scissor kick Angela Landsbury.
He date raped David Bowie.
i don't know how long i've been listening to this song... but i am not getting tired of it yet.
Never gonna happen...
THIS. IS. COUNTRY.
YESSER!!!!!!!!!
Everytime someone likes this I’ll be able to come back and listen again
Dear Canada,

This is, by far, the greatest country song of this era. It is what country was, and still is, supposed to be.
All the songs he recorded live for this series are 10x better than album version. Especially Kate McCannon!
Hands down the best version.
My life has revolved around music and this is one of my favorites of my adult life I've heard.
This might just be me but i think its so cool that after he sings the final line about the 3 rounds the guitar stops and then he strums it 3 times to represent the 3 rounds love that
Much prefer this recording than the album one.
That kick drum is a very good touch

That kick hits so hard! The pain in his voice is mesmerizing. I typically hate country music, but this is where it's at!! Incredible job dude!!
This is perfect. The incongruity of his deep voice, the darkness of the lyrics, the patience in building tension in the story and that little smirk/smile at the end. 💯💯

A little bit like Post Malone too

I agree on the 100%. This version is gut wrenching.
Dang, talk about giving a man chills when he first started singing
The framing of the close up where his hat covers his eyes and all you see is his mouth growling into the mic is something the video team should be proud of. And not just because it’s cool, but because it pays off at 3:33
I'm listening to this song late at night, and during a very strong thunderstorm, which is a hell of a combo. Great job Mr. Wall
He's not "forcing" his voice, he's singing with pure, unadulterated emotion.

Am I the only one that did not expect that voice?

I heard his songs on Pandora before I seen his videos...I pictured a much older and worn out man...very surprised.
the voice of 10 men!
There's something about loving a girl like in these lyrics that hurts so much. Imagine going to the place where you fell in love with that girl and seeing her with someone else. That would shred every emotion you had to pieces. Lyrical genius.
