- Writer-director Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam was hailed as the poster boy of new age Telugu cinema when he debuted with the rom-com 'Pelli Choopulu' and went on to direct the buddy comedy 'Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi'. Here, he talks about understanding the business of cinema, his roller coaster journey as a director and later as an actor. He also offers a glimpse into his new Telugu film ‘Keedaa Cola’.
This interview is a part of Directors' Take, a series that shines the spotlight on the newer crop of directors who made their mark in Telugu cinema in recent years. The series is an attempt to discuss how the larger-than-life Telugu films that capture nationwide attention co-exist with refreshing small and medium budget films.

Loved the interview, mainly because of the Interviewer Sangeeta, finally saw someone who listens more, rather than interrupting the speaker's flow. Good Series planned by Hindu, hope you pitch in more directors from India.

What an insightful conversation. I have to disagree with Tharun on his "we have to cater to the masses" statement though. The masses utterly hate change, they want the same thing but packaged in a new avatar. case in point "KGF", "Pushpa" etc. If the film makers bend to their whims, they'll be ending up making the same but slightly different movies over & over again like most of the old guard telugu movie makers do, instead take the Nolan route (i'm no blind fanboy of Nolan, I hated tenet) where he deliberately pivoted the audience taste to a higher degree by making the kind of movies he did. Meeru audience sthaayi penche movies teeyali, meeru valla sthaayo ki raakoodadu.

Catering to audience ante core emotional level lo. Audience sthayi peragali ante, movie technically brilliant ga theesthe raadhu, overall society lo awareness and knowledge peruguthe vasthadhi. Eppudu unna audience ki vallu percieve chese laga value ivvakapothe ika vaaru cinema choosi em labham, vallu ticket ki dabbulu endhuku pettali. First of all, audience ni just oka viewer ga choodali, cinema lover ga kaadhu. All they want is escapism and going through emotions during that runtime. That is the value that they get from paying the money. Adhe tharun bhascker chepthundu director ki nachina stories ni technicalities, subtle layers, audience ki nache laga balance cheyadam challenging ani. Seedha audience sthayi penchu ante saripodhu. Demographics, cinema literacy telugu states lo entha ani consider cheyali. It is a slow process because commerce is a big part. We are moving in that direction.

As a new age film maker they have to blaze a path..they can't be aiming for the lowest hanging fruit under the ruse of "Appealing to the masses"
Many tell ss rajamouli’s sir lifted telugu cinema but in telugu film industries suffered from many scrap directors till 2014 but then came new age film makers like tarun and prasanthvarma and adivi sesh these guy have literally lifted with their content driven films
These Guys kept inside the Telugu Region. But, SSR took outside the region. We are hungry for content based movies as well as Commercial movies which is our way back traditional strong hold.
Balancing both is the key.. exaggerating anything leads to downfall.. Malayalam movies caters one side, Bollywood caters another side. Tamil (way earlier), Now Telugu Industries are trying to balance both the people.

I loved Pelli choopulu and liked Ee Nagaraniki emaindi. But Ramula was a huge disappointment. I watched it specifically because Tharun Bhasker made it but there were many flaws:
1. Why would a girl allow herself to be filmed in an intimate moment?
2. The love story of the girl and boy didn't make sense from the start. Why did she want to marry him if he continuously didn't want to marry her and was jobless too?
3. She refused to even sit next to him in a cinema but agreed to get intimate with him. Why?
4. The guy wanted to suddenly marry her after sleeping with her and suddenly went against his dad. Make no sense to me.
Somehow that film had too many loopholes
