What are some other examples of good worldbuilding that come to mind?

Too many to name! One of my favorites in video games is the old series from the PS2 era, The Legacy of Kain series. One entire game is actually the results of history being rewritten in the previous title and the new timeline that now.must exist due to said change. FASCINATING series that is finally getting a continuation in comic book form after all these years! 🎉🎉🎉

@@TheDiabeticGameMaster oh that’s sick! I love it when things get comic continuations, feels a bit like settling but it’s nice when there’s book other option and the creators are dedicated to seeing the story fully played out!

@@TheSandbox_Official i agree. Like, I'm happy there's a Gravity Falls comic and they took full advantage of the ne medium to make jokes that only work as a comic book, however, kind of would have just preferred more TV show, lol. At least in a lot of cases (and in the LoK on in particular) it is sort of implied that, if the comic does good they might be able to spin that into more of the thing everybody actually wants. Lol. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

Not exactly what I expected from this video but I actually really liked how you explained some of the best connections within the show without over explaining! Especially for McGucket and Mabel’s mini golf skills 🤔🤯

Yoooo I actually love this! This was a way harder script to work out cuz I didn’t want to over-explain the obvious but get more into the minutiae of the show’s setting and connectedness. Thanks for watching and commenting! Always appreciate you man!

Great video! Gravity Falls is absolutely one of the best examples of worldbuilding. They also do a good job of cooking the frog, letting the viewer (frog) not realize the insanity (temperature rising) happening until it is too late to escape and you're hooked (cooked). Loved the way you connected the dots on things that I hadn't realized, and I've watched the show three times! Looking forward to future videos.

What’s annoying to me about this video is that it doesn’t consider Alex’s and his team's actual process. The writers had no idea where most of the show was going. The only thing planned was Stan’s secret twin. A lot of what makes Gravity Falls so good is that the writers went back in their show and paid attention to loose threads. Alex said he wanted consistency. They were given a seven-episode lead in season one (not common for the time), which allowed them to go through and add details that showed Dipper and Mabel’s actions had consequences for the world around them. Nothing besides Ford's reveal was planned, though. Not even Bill Cipher. He was mostly a joke, and they weren’t sure he would be in the show. Using gravity as world-building, choosing a tone for your story, and trying to remain faithful to it is a big deal. The writers (specifically Alex) wanted to push for making sure all the magic elements had some twist to make them specific to gravity falls. There couldn’t be just a goblin; it’s a “gremoblin”. And putting this pressure to have your story's plot points figured out beforehand is unnecessary (not that the video says to, but I don’t think it’s made clear). It’s often better to build your narrative, create the questions for your audience, and then pay it off using things you established before. Good video, but I think it’s a little misleading.

Haha not at all man! I welcome the constructive criticism tbh! This was a harder video for me to conceptualize and produce but it was a fun challenge!
I think you’re right in that I could have presented it in a better way (it just would have been longer which wasn’t my goal this time around), to show how the “planned vs unplanned” doesn’t really matter so long as you introduce things clearly, the audience understands it, and you gradually build the world one piece at a time WITH the audience.
Covering the behind the scenes with Alex Hirsch and team wasn’t one of my objectives. I just wanted to dive into what was portrayed and how it was.
Honestly I doubt that Alex didn’t have the big elements planned out, no matter what he says. I think most of the newly added things had to do with more one-off elements and episodes like Boss Mabel or the anthologies.
At the end of the day, they accomplished something beautiful and so absurdly well executed. Whether it was planned or by the seat of their pants, it doesn’t matter cuz it FEELS planned. World elements were introduced, and when they were revisited, it remained consistent with the world and how those elements were previously presented or utilized, so all payoff felt authentic. When things “broke” or when mysteries were answered or twists were revealed, it felt more like “ugh I should’ve seen that coming” and not “wait what? Where did that come from?”
Writing is often (almost always) an as you go process. Planning out an entire story before writing a word of it…doesn’t happen quite frankly.
No matter how much was planned out, they were able to pivot as well as they were because of the diligent work put in ahead of time. Even when they were only given 7 episodes at the start. They did something with it, and made every second count! God bless them all!
Thanks for watching and engaging with me down here! Doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated!
