Hi everyone and welcome to the Sandbox! I started this channel to highlight an animatic series my friend and I had worked on, but it quickly evolved into a warm community where we get to talk about anything and everything, from Fantasy & Horror books to animation & superhero films!
I aim to put out 3-4 videos per month, including Ranking Videos, Book Reviews, and Comedy Sketches. But I always love to hear from you guys and learn what you want to see, so please feel free to reach out or just leave your suggestions in the comment section (I read every comment)!
Thanks so much! I love you all and I hope you decide to stick around!

Adapting The Cosmere Cinematic Universe - Era 1
The time has finally come to get into the nitty gritty of how exactly to go about adapting the behemoth of a series known as The Cosmere!
Last time we looked at each major studio and their streaming service to break down what might fit Sanderson's (and Dragonsteel's) brand. However, this time, we're going book by book for all stories set within Era 1 of the Cosmere as we discuss which elements to adapt or change, which order to release the stories (and in which medium), and what post-credit scenes to include as bridges between projects.
This is the second part to a long-time-in-the-making passion project of mine, so I hope you can find the time to watch it and are able to walk away a little more knowledgeable about The Cosmere, Hollywood, and Brandon Sanderson!
And a HUGE THANKS to the many contributors for this video's research, writing, & audio! Please do yourself a favor and check out the wonderful channels listed below if you consider yourself a Cosmere fan and would like to learn more while being entertained:

Would you want to see a Cosmere Anthology Series adapted? What are some of your hot takes for Cosmere adaptations?
Do you think Hoid should break the 4th wall in Cosmere adaptations?
I have concerns but as long as it’s subtle, I’m down!
It's the biggest release in fantasy by a landslide and yet I can't get my hands on a copy anywhere in the Netherlands. Seems to be a Europe wide issue.
@@FatCandyProduction hope you get yours soon!
When does an ‘adaptation’ become an ‘interpretation’ in your opinion?
For me, it’s mainly when a character’s central motivations or conflicts change.
@ I think that’s a very fair line. Looking back, when this line is crossed, that’s where I disliked adaptations for not being faithful.
Cavilld be a good Steelheart though
Any Alethi character would need to be South Pacific, or Polynesian
Agreed. Sanderson seems to be sticking to this mindset as well.
Animated would be perfect. Hollywood's bias against animation is the only reason it's going live action
Yeah I’d love either to be honest. I’m really only doing this thought experiment as live-action because (1) Sanderson prefers to and (2) the MCU model exists.
What is your opinion on type-casting? Who do you think would make the perfect Hoid?
David freaking Tennant. Mostly because he was supposed to narrate the Tress of the Emerald Sea audiobook but had scheduling conflicts.
@ I’ve seen his name tossed around before and would definitely agree. But this might fall into the “type-casting” category.
I think Kaladin takes on all three shards on roshar and will be known as Truth. I think Shallan backs out of going off world with Adolin to become a Knight of Wind and Truth choosing Kaladin over Adolin. Adolin will have Magic off roshar with an unlocked Maya but Shallan would have to kill pattern to go off world which makes the decision to stay behind and work with Kaladin over going off with Adolin easier. Adolin’s only real rival is a god 3 times over.
@@tct8284 that’s a damn spicy one and I’m absolutely here for it!
I mean, it'd be great animated well. I'd probably prefer that to cgi
It’s not off the table, just a lot harder to get going as Sanderson has said.
How would you handle the Atium retcon in a film adaptation?
Like you said, I like just making it pure Atium from the get-go. Making it an even rarer valuable resource would make the heist more viable and stakes more real.
The cosmere smh. I love brando. But the cosmere is just all his works. There’s no actual link between all his series. Sure there might be a tiny, very tiny mention somewhere. But technically, the Bible is in the cosmere. Rheres nothing linking the stories….Replace the cosmere with Brandon Sanderson’s books.
@@BreinGames he has many other series (Alcatraz, Legion, Skyward, etc) that are not set in the Cosmere. And the links between them have started small (more Easter eggs and references) but have grown towards universal proportions. As he said 2 years ago with The Lost Metal’s release, “the gloves are off”.
Tress will be the first movie and it will be animated :p
@@OriginalHuman studio ghibli style?
I had not even considered before what Kaldin's fifth ideal might be before listening but I really enjoyed this part of the discussion. Based on my own journey with mental health, which honestly tracks pretty closely to the template for the immortal words you posted, I think the fifth ideal has got to be The Destination, no? So if step 4 is forgiving yourself for the person you were, step 5 is finally living authentically as the person you are now. I think it follows Bookborn's idea that each is Ideal harder than the last too. This is certainly true of my journey. Not only realising but accepting that you are now at the Destination. That maybe finally you are now the person you always knew, always hoped, you could be, that is *incredibly* difficult. Perhaps the hardest part of the journey is to accept that it is over, that you have arrived (although I think when it comes to mental health, you never really come to the end of that journey, you have to always keep working at it otherwise you risk going backwards, but a story also needs an end). But anyway, I think the same will be true for Kaladin too. I can really see him struggling with accepting this, with realising that he is already the good person, the protector, the healer... the hero. His accepting that would be a very satisfying end for me personally. Especially if he gets the normal happy life you guys spoke about-i'd even be happy with him losing his power, if it means his being happy. Anyway, this is what I have been thinking about since listening. A good thought provoking discussion. Happy Wind and Truth eve! Incredibly excited to wake up tomorrow and dive in!
@@studio_erstwood love this rationale. Personally when it comes to mental health I don’t think there’s a destination. But I think learning that counts as it. When Kaladin learns he’s figured out the ways to cope with his depression, and is in a better place, but realizes he’ll never be 100% better, that’s when we’ll get his fifth oath perhaps?
awesomething
Nah male characters should stay male! No need to gender bent them. But knowing Hollywood and its woke nonsense....
If it’s Sanderson wanting to do it, and not the usual studio interference, I’m okay with it personally.
I'm on board for genderswapped Dockson, but not loving genderswapped Ham, mostly given that Ham has a family and lives his life distantly to provide for them, leaving his wife to raise the children. While the mother working remotely to provide while a father raises the children is normal in many cultures today, in a pre-modern society it would be an exceptional outlier. Additionally, Ham making frequent trips to train at the garrison, but hide the fact that he's a misting while also not standing out too much as an oddity fits a bit better as a male (while granted female works fine in this scenario, it's slightly more of an oddity in general). Who would make a much better candidate IMO is a genderswapped Breeze. A noble socialite, and this also mitigates somewhat the disturbing age gap between himself & Allrianne Cett if the elder of the two is female, as the relationship would be viewed as (slightly) less predatory.
You know what? You’ve made some great points and I agree. Breeze makes a lot of sense to use instead for this purpose. It’s been a minute since I read Era 1 and Dockson’s backstory is not fresh in my mind; that said, I feel like it’s not the most memorable aspect of the story/crew and Sanderson has ideas to replace it with something just as interesting. But that might just be me trusting in Sanderson too much 😅
The Alloy of Law would be brutal to start with hahahaha
😂😂😂 right?!
Why bother everyone is going to be race and gender swapped and made gay
Sanderson has already rejected race swapping once with Cavill, but it’s a genuine concern that casting isn’t faithful to these characters and their cultures.
A 20 years older Henry could play Dalinar
Not sure if he fits the ethnicity or not. He was told no for Kaladin due to (1) age & (2) ethnicity. And they’re both Alethi. But acting wise (race aside), I 100% agree!
I actually think, the hero of ages shoukd get split in two, there's just no good way to cover everything, and we have really good highs wit both ten soon and spook stories
It’s something I fear as I think it could hurt the final product but if they can find a way to balance it and make Part 1 NOT an absolute snooze fest, I’m on board!
Glenn Powell would be amazing as Kelsier. Henry Cavill would be a perfect Amaram. Clubs would be perfectly played by Jonathan Banks!
Love those fan castings! Though I think I would still prefer Cavill as Vasher. Who do you think would make a good Lord Ruler?
@TheSandbox_Official I'm not sure about the lord ruler but I would definately ask Michael Sheen for a audition tape! Cavill as Vasher could be cool though I think he would play the more regal Amaram just perfectly and pick maybe Jason Momoa(not sure about this one) for Vasher. Maybe we can get Wes Chatham as Hammond?
@ all good fan casts right there in my book!
Where do you recommend people to start their Cosmere journey?
The only person I can see playing Kelsier is Austin Butler. I'm not sure why but after seeing him in Dune Part 2 I can only see him as Kelsier.
@@whylark hahaha that’s hilarious but I also think he would do a fantastic job! He’s got stellar talent!
Disagree with Hoid breaking the fourth wall. Marvel is great but it’s caused too many moves to not take themselves seriously scattering in silly jokes. However! Hoid should be allowed to break the fourth-ish wall when telling the stories of tress and yumi. (As in, he should still talk to us like we’re from the cosmere)
Yeah, I feel like those Special Projects are a great example of Hoid's 4th-wall-breakingness. Also the fact that the Stormlight books' epilogues all feature Hoid waiting for someone to speak with is another example. His Fortune could be tweaked a bit for the CCU to encompass this quirk. But I completely understand the hesitancy! MCU has dropped the ball post Infinity Saga and lost their way. But that shouldn't exclude from others finding it and doing it right.
What did you all think of Disney’s latest sequel?
Saw it this weekend too and was too scared to say that I liked it given the energy online 😅
@@SLALIONLLC you can always speak your mind here :)
Love this vid!
@@baux_dud yay! Thanks for watching and letting me know! Makes my day getting to talk to other Cosmere fans!
In addition my other pet Theory is that whether Kaladin dies or ascends to take up The Shard of Honor, Orodin grows up Over the time jump becoming a perspective character And bonds Syl. We could still get memories of Kal through Syl teaching him lessons. Lirin then has enough trauma to bond his own damn spren knowing that he raised another fighter. Maybe bonus if he just jumps off the Tower of his own volition this time
@@felixmasterson yeah the back half has me scratching my head in curiosity and anticipation! Just gonna have to wait for WaT before making any legitimate guesses
I think Adolin revives Maya then later is put into mortal Danger and hence kaladin swears his fifth ideal, something to the effect of I will protect those deserving even at the cost of my own life. Kal dies and in the resolution of the book Adolin says something to the effect of never forgetting the sacrifice. Maybe I will remember those I've lost that made me the man I am or something like that. This counts as an edgedancer oath and finally binds him to Maya. I actually think these are all pipe dreams and I think adolin's going to die. But man if he survives and gets off world think of all the fashion he could see. Man I really need it to be Friday
@@felixmasterson hahaha that would actually be so sick
I was bout to grab my pitchfork after you said to reveal kelsier is still alive but after your explanation I’m 100% onboard. As someone who got that spoiled before I got to it I think this is a great change
@@M1cr0Man1a hahahaha thanks so much! Yeah man, I had it spoiled as well, but getting a tease on the big screen would have hyped me the heck up! 😅
You better do a video on era 2
😅 it’s on the list! I’ve got a few Cosmere vids in the pipeline (mainly theory and ranking vids), but I definitely plan on making an Era 2 video of sorts soon. It’s just tough cuz the only things we have in the era really are Mistborn Wax & Wayne and then Stormlight (and we’ll only have half of it after Wind & Truth comes out). So at that point, I’d rather just do a video on each. That said, my next planned video for this series was how to “properly” adapt the Stormlight in live-action (cuz fans seemingly prefer animation but that isn’t Sanderson’s first choice). I’ve got some ideas and theories…as always. 😉
I love the idea of Hoid *occasionally* and *subtly* breaking the 4th wall. It perfectly fits his character! As many others have also thought, Mistborn would make an incredible video game!
Glad someone agrees! ❤️ Mistborn video game almost happened and I’m so sad it didn’t come to fruition. But here’s hoping!
I suggest only shows for cosmere
Bold, I like it 😅
Everyone predicting Kal will ride off into the sunset with syl and become a therapist are as delusional as lirin. Kal is either dead or his fate is unknown read sunlit man….please.
I loved how ambiguous it was in Stormlight. Definitely seems like he either dies a mortal death or Ascends to godhood.
I didnt realize there was going to be spoilers, I will have to keep this video saves until I read the books😭
Yeah sorry, hard to talk about things to change without touching on certain plot points.
After finishing the preview chapters my expectations are low. We are so far away from Kaladin and bridge 4 carrying a bridge. I’m so sick of Shallan at this point I will probably just skip all her parts. In one scene she is regretting having to kill the ghost bloods in the next she refuses to kill them. She could have murdered them 3 different times in the preview chapters. But the book needs them to be alive so she doesn’t. Makes me hate her character. Also lifts pov chapter where she is checking out boys is straight out of a CW show. Completely takes me out of the fantasy. Just to many characters running around im supposed to care about, but I don’t.
Dang sorry to hear you’re so low on it after the previews. But fully agree that this story is very different than how it started.
Brilliant work ❤
Thanks brotha! 🙏

@ they’re gonna be legendary!
As much as I like Keanu Reeves, I'm not sure if I'd agree with Brandon that he'd be the best choice for the Lord Ruler. I think the Lord Ruler needs to look younger, more intimidating, and more physically fit. He's supposed to look like an immortal perpetually in his prime, and Keanu is just kind of too old in my eyes and not intimidating in that cold ruthless villain sort of way. The Lord Ruler needs that presence, that gravitase, and I just don't think Keanu is right for that. Personally, I think Michael Fassbender would be a much better choice for the Lord Ruler. As for what character I think Henry Cavill could play, I think he'd actually be a great choice for Vasher/Zahel. I'm ceratin a Stormlight adaptation would come well before a Warbreaker one, so we could definitely see Henry "cameo-ing" in Stormlight as Zahel before getting him as a main character in a Warbreaker adaptation.
Yeah I 100% agree that Keanu has aged out of the role (despite my immense love for him). Fassbender would be great as well. Though I’ve always pictured him as a potential Kelsier as well. Glad we agree on Cavill as Vasher! ☺️
@@TheSandbox_Official I think that Fassbender COULD play Kelsier, but I think there are potentially better actors for that role, so I think Fassbender would be better off playing the Lord Ruler. Honestly, and I'm not sure entirely how this would work since he doesn't do as many live-action roles as VA ones, I actually think that Troy Baker could play a great Kelsier. That optimism and hopefulness, the smiling and levity, masking a great deal of pain from both his past and what he knows he'll have to do in the near future.
@ fair points. Something tells me Fassbender would make a great metal-based villain 😅 Had to look up Troy Baker before I recognized him. He could be great as well. Though I worry he might be too old for Kelsier now. Ideally we’d want someone in their mid-thirties to low-forties, so they’re in it for the long haul.
This comment made me realize that Keanu is SIXTY. Holy crap.
I think it will be very hard to ballance the shorter stories with people currently tired of interconnecting tv and movies. I think one anthology tv show is a good way of doing it as long as there isn’t much and that’s it
Yeah I think limiting it to the more important stories is smart because, as you’ve said, consumers are starting to get tired of the whole universe concept. But imo it’s because it’s been done poorly recently. When the MCU was firing on all cylinders, they were the most successful studio in the world. All it takes is for good stories to captivate audiences. The “universe” can come later.
@@TheSandbox_Official yep I agree! Though still need a balance to make sure it isn’t too much! Also while I agree with your statement the CCU shouldn’t be rushed at the beginning I think the time line you later put is too long simply because of stormlight. If it’s 10 seasons one for each book with a year in between (minimum probably as seen with rings of power etc) then even if they started with it in era 2 on your time line (2039) then season 10 comes out in 2057 when Brandon is 80 with Dragonsteel and mistborn space age still to go. However if you do a one year gap rather than 2 between final empire and well of ascension and have hero of ages the year after and merge the two sets of years with one show together then stormlight could start in 2033 and thus the Stormlight archive could finish in 2051 when Brandon is 74/75 so has time to lead the end of the cosmere
I think that now we have seen Universal’s approach to world building in Wicked from set design, CGI, and costuming. I think they absolutely have the chops. And I think that a Mistborn Halloween Horror Nights house would be a popular draw as well… a cheap pop up in the parks, the same way Universal monsters was HHN proof of concept until getting a land in Epic Universe.
Ooh great idea with HHN! That’d be so fun! Escape Kredik Shaw from the Inquisitors! Haven’t seen Wicked yet but from the sound of it, it only gives me more conviction. Also, to pat myself a bit on the back here, they did technically announce a non-Cosmere adaptation with Universal for Snapshot…which suggests a decent enough working relationship! 😁
Love the video! Agree on a lot of it and love to see Arcanum as an anthology series. I like your more conservative approach but think that if Mistborn 1 does well they should already start Elantris into production and start Warbreaker into pre production. I know the tough part would be selling it as the same universe but sometimes the post credit trailer can do wonders to make people realize that it’s all building to something greater
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah tried to be as conservative as I could but you could most certainly have Elantris come out before Hero of Ages. Post-credits would be essential to tying it together like you said (plus all the online critics and reporters would help in that case as well).
Henry as either the Lord Ruler or Wax would go SO HARD
I think marsh!
Ooooh Wax would be great!
I think Gary Oldman would be a great Lord Ruler. He can perform that transition between ancient old man to powerful God ruler.
@ might be a tad old for the role now but man he’s so good!
Wax would suit him so well I think
Amazing video! Well done.
Thanks so much! ☺️
The Kelsier reveal should not come in the first movie for sure. Maybe at the end of Era 1. If the character is done right, then he will loom too large over the rest of era 1, if you imply he's not dead.
I see where you’re coming from and have similar concerns which is why I think it’s wise to only tease his background journey. Nothing within the post-credits I offered would suggest his vital role in taking down Ruin (that would all be saved for Secret History adaptation). My main worry is for the fans. Without it being in Mistborn 1, it will be spoiled for many new fans. And feel cheaper if it comes 2 movies down the line. Films and books work much differently in what they can get away with, imo.
The secret history issue is more about Rashek showing to have fully died before Bands of Mourning. The idea that TLR may still be alive is central to that novel, and Secret History spoils that, though a lot of people miss that
@@jaysemitchells497 hm yeah fair point, I had forgotten that myself. But I still think that goes in line with the overall narrative I’ve laid out here. You could still keep that mystery alive with a SH adaptation, or pivot more towards a focus on Kelsier.
I think the mistborn books would be too long to properly fit into any decent length movies, a TV series would probably be a lot better for them
Condensing would be a must for sure. But it can be done. It's been done many times before. Sanderson just needs to find the write pair of visionaries for the medium and assist them with the story, imo.
My brother in christ, the stormlight books make mistborn look like short stories, they can for sure do Mistborn movies, but if they attempted that with Stormlight, it would be an unmitigated disaster.
Eh, I think you can do mistborn a lot easier than you think. A lot of those pages are taken up by things that can more easily be displayed visually, and of course you have a pruning of some of it to fit a movie length. All fans need to temper expectations here - we will never get a scene for scene recreation of the books. What movie ever gives us that? I think we just need to be grateful if and when we get some of these adaptations, and pray that they are as faithful as they can be.

Hey Mo! Thanks for watching!
Great video! I think you’ve got a lot of good ideas here! I just really really hope anything they do make doesn’t flop.
In Sanderson We Trust! They just need to make sure he retains full creative control and they find good show runners, writers, directors, etc.
