Hiking the Silver Bell Mine & Mastodon Peak Trail | Joshua Tree National Park | California | 2025

Our first stop is the Silver Bell and Golden Bell Loop Trail, a 2 mile hike that leads us through stunning desert landscapes, with rocky outcrops, expansive views, and unique plant life. This trail is perfect for those seeking a mix of adventure and breathtaking scenery. Along the way, we'll learn about the area’s rich history, including its mining past. Keep an eye out for remnants of old mining operations scattered along the trail, offering a glimpse into how the harsh desert once supported these industries.
Next, we explore the Mastodon Peak Trail, a 2.4-mile hike that takes us to the summit of Mastodon Peak. The view from the top is absolutely worth it, but what makes this trail even more fascinating is its historical significance. Along the way, we'll pass the remains of the Mastodon Mine, a once-thriving gold mine from the early 1900s. As we walk through this area, you’ll see mining equipment, abandoned structures, an old prospecting shaft, all reminders of the miners who braved the harsh desert conditions in search of fortune.
These two hikes offer an incredible combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making Joshua Tree National Park not just a place to explore nature, but to step back in time and witness the remnants of its mining history.
