  • Hey everyone, welcome to my channel! I am so glad you are here! Today I am bringing you along with me to show you my working pantry. We have some stops along the way as I show you my 3 FAVORITE ways to store my spices. Keep in mind, it is not a showroom quality pantry, as many post online. It is a working pantry, it functions, it serves it's purpose and that's all that matters to me. It's an in - depth tour, so keep that in mind. I wanted to show everything we put back. Hoping it inspires others to put back food as well for themselves when they are able to. You never know when you will have to rely solely on what your pantry holds. Blessings, see you on the next video!

    Stops along the way before the big pantry tour : 1:23 - 7:40 (misc.storage and spice storage)

    I dislike that we feel the need to explain away and justify why we have what we have in our pantry. This is common sense if you have 9 kids or 0 kids. Thank you so much for taking the time to graciously open your home to us. Just beautiful and so functional. Keep up the great work!

      If I hadn’t of come from a large family I wouldn’t have understood these large amount of food in a pantry that is shown now, with only being 3 of us in our family we do not need to have all of this food in ours and now down to only 2 of us we need so much less. Please understand that it is overwhelming to us to see so much food and being concerned about it going bad before the expiration dates!!

    • @SurvivalBetty
      @SurvivalBetty ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@deborahlehman8617 In the country, this is normal for us. We can't just go to the store easily. Snow, a tree gets blown down on the road, an ice storm, flooded roads and we can't get to the store. You grow a garden, and then preserve it. These are skills still being used by a lot of folks. City folks find it strange, but this is normal. When everyone is panic buying at the store, we'll be not adding to the fray because we live seasonally and preserve food. The abnormality is a centralized food system that's made this way of life seem out of step. It's why shelves are picked clean during any "crisis" and people fight in the isles for toilet paper. Decentralize the food system just a little, and it decreases the burden on society. So the folks that can't do these things as easily, can go to the market and have what they need. We're still eating preserves from several years ago, ground beef from 3 years ago, and canned veggies almost 2 years old. You only grow and preserve what you need and keep it rotated.

      @@SurvivalBetty I am from Turkey and it is strange how much spice varieties you have, what we have in our house is salt-meatball spice-cinnamon-dried mint-black pepper ( never used if i dont insist :) )ginger ( bought it for the first time to try kimchi )

    I'm in my mid-60s now and have been a pantry-momma for decades - was the oldest of 6 and have always cooked from scratch .. And I have to say - I'm rarely (if ever) impressed with a pantry tour. Yours however is ideal to me. A working pantry - not a showroom - wise selections, a thought out plan ...
    You're doing great!! (new subscriber)

    To remove permanent marker from hard non porous surfaces(like your jar lids), scribble over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker and it will wipe right off. I promise it works great!

    • @OhPervyOne
      @OhPervyOne ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LOL I thought I was the only one that knows this. It doesn't always work with soft plastic or textured plastic surfaces. Sometimes rubbing alcohol works.

    • @pinschrunner

      Just wipe it off with rubbing alcohol. Done☑️

    • @KatyInNH

      Hand sanitizer works also - also washing in the dishwasher softens so it can be wiped off

      In a pinch to get permanent marker writing off non-porous surfaces spray with Lysol spray and rub.

      See I use the matte scotch tape and you can write on it with permanent marker. Leave one end folded over and itll peel right off when no longer in use.

    You can just put a layer of cardboard between the stacked jars for safety in a pinch.
    Consider puting a Bungie cord across the stacked shelves. It limits the "high gravity" episodes given how tight your pantry is. It's not the loss but the clean up that gets me. It's always the messy stuff that bounces off and splatters on the hardest stuff to clean up.

    • @rockymountainhomesteadangela
      @rockymountainhomesteadangela  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree. I did find some cardboard from broken down amazon boxes today and grabbed them before my husband could get rid of them. It's temporary at least till we add the shelves in between. There was just so much wasted space with how tall the shelves are to just put one layer of jars. Were going to be making some adjustments with the shelves. My husband made them years ago before I got really big into canning so they were not designed for mason jars clearly 😂 Thanks for the tip 😊

    I totally understand the amount of food you go through. I was the oldest of 9 children. So I started very young helping Mom take care of younger siblings. Doing house work and babysitting and cooking full meals by the time I was in 5th grade. We were all brought up to do for ourselves and help in the house. Making lunches for all was like an assembly line. It took 5# of potatoes to make mashed potatoes for the family with a potato masher. And 4-5 loaves of bread a week. We made our own cookies and cakes. I was 16 before I realized that birthday cakes should come without finger swipes. 😆 So many more are taking their children out of public school. If you could explain that process. And tell how you got started and errors along the way. That is very valuable information. A pantry is never fully organized. It changes with your family and their tastes and needs. Also the seasons with your garden and how much it produces. It is always a work in progress. I put my yeast in a zip lock bag and then put it in the freezer. Making salmon patties is good for a quick dinner. And can be used as a snack. Just make a dipping sauce for them. There were 5 boys and 4 girls in the family. Even the boys had to do their turn to wash dishes. One to wash and one to dry.

    Your pantry is fantastic! I can't even imagine how much food you go through weekly with such a huge family. Being so remote, having backup pantry groceries would be an absolute necessity! I have been to Colorado many times, and I know about the flash floods you are talking about.

      Thank you so much!! I will be uploading videos showing how we use everything in our pantry for the next month. Every Saturday (or Sunday), starting next weekend, I will be putting out a weekly recap of what meals I made from what we have. I decided to give the three rivers pantry/freezer challenge a go this year. We will only (with small exceptions) be using what we have on hand for meals. No grocery stores. It'll be interesting but will show others how to utilize all types of pantry items. 😊

      @@rockymountainhomesteadangela-LOL It Can be difficult to down size, but it has its perks as well!!! If your kids are close by, you’ll be feeding them,&/or sending frozen meals home to them, most likely for a good while, or even when They become new Moms or Dads, to help out!!! Making a pan of Mac & cheese means You have lunches or dinners cooked,& in the Freezer(!), to throw a salad with, or whatever. Plus you’ll have time & energy to try New things you may have always wanted to, but it wasn’t cost effective to even Chance mastering, or with how foods have evolved so much in My years, it may be something not even thought of yet!!! And GOD Willing, you’ll have your Best Friend aka your Husband as you’re tasting critic, which in My experience, they let you down far nicer, than kids when they don’t like something!!! I’ve always been a scratch cooker,& I’m in 3-4th years now, of Monthly pieces big & small items, towards outfitting my youngest daughter’s kitchen, who’s an even Better cook than me!!! I want her to have the Best of what I can afford, for making Anything her heart desires, along with prepping better than she is now. Just hearing pregnant women Shouldn’t eat cold deli meats blew me away recently, so now I’m gearing up for a rotisserie cooker & meat slicer, so she can make most of her favorites, but also getting a meat grinder soon as well!!! She’s wanting to go Dehydrating Before tackling Canning, as well as freezing, being a Full time mail carrier who usually ends up with overtime whether she likes it or not, so not much energy left in her especially in days that go over 100 degrees, or below freezing & rainy/snowy!!! Your pantry is Right up her alley-I’ve watched too many as well!!! Your organizing & use of space suits her well also! She’s unfortunately started this year off with a miscarriage, but we’re praying for good news every day, while she focuses on other things(a watched pot never boils!),& they plan on homeschooling Hopefully 2(her clock is ticking🫣)is the goal!!! So your channel I Know will be one she will Love!!!🥰🙏

    I am so happy to find you with your high elevation tested recipes! It’s hard (read impossible) to find a cookbook for high elevation and the elevation throws everything from times to fluid amounts to temperatures to leavening agents and on and on. I’ve just moved back to the Rockies after far too long away and am struggling to remember how to cook this high up. Couple that with convection ovens which I’ve never used before and needless to say I’ve been a touch frustrated more than once. 😊

    We would make our own cookies. My sister and I would each take a cookie recipe. And would do about 6 different cookies. Nothing fancy. We did peanut butter, sugar cookies, thumb print cookies, ginger snap, or oatmeal or oatmeal and raisin. When we got the cookie batter mixed we rolled the batter in a log covered with wax paper and put them in the door of the freezer. So they were already made up for lunches and snacks. You just had to slice the cookie logs, place them on a cookie tray and bake.

    You absolutely amaze me! Homeschooling, canning, cleaning (your house looks great), taking care of 8 children, and I'm sure you teach your family about the Lord. God Bless you all. You are certainly on the right path. I'm 74 but I'm sure I will learn something valuable from your podcasts. I started prepping this year and appreciate new ideas😊

      Thank you so much! Yes we do teach them about the Lord, one of the main reasons we chose to homeschool almost 10 years ago!!

    I have pantry envy. Just the 3 of us (our oldest is 26 & out on his own) but I homeschool our 8 yr old, ever since 2020 & the “C word” drama became a thing. I have a closet with shelves & now a Small area in our old dining room/now school room/art room lol. Seriously… your pantry is what dreams are made of!!!

    I totally understand what you're saying because I have done the same thing with my pantry and we needed it for sicknesses for like a month so it's been handy. One of my brothers live in Fort Collins with his family and my other brother lives in Loveland with his family so all my immediate family all live in Colorado. Thanks and take care!

    I cannot say enough about the beautiful pantry you have young lady. We’ll done.
    I have stuff in my laundry room too such as food storage because no room in the kitchen for my pasta dry beans canned beans and rice and tomato products. What pantry I have in my kitchen had condiments/ baking / mix’s and seasonings .
    You’ve done a great job.
    Love it. You do what you have to do.
    Your husband did a great job building cabinets shelf’s etc.
    I get it Bruce was out of work 3 months I had food stored for 3-4 months maybe. We were super lucky to have it. This house we have now we have more room and I have 6 months or more of food if I stretch it , but we would be fine. I feel blessed to have the stuff.
    My Dad lives in grand Junction Co and Bruce grew up in Colorado. We went to school together and graduated together.
    Now we’re in Oklahoma. Northwest Oklahoma .

    I didn’t read through the comments and you may already know this, but you can use a dry erase marker to color over permanent market and them wipe off with a paper towel. You have a beautiful home and I love all your storage space!

    I love your kitchen and working pantry. I was the oldest so i did most of the cooking so from 17 in college with my own apt. i had my own stocked pantry and when i started having kids i made a whole room, food pantry and closet. I'm finding it hard to organize even after decades now, but i'm learning to store in different places, LOL

      I agree. Sometimes, you have to get creative with the space you have. I had to with my long-term things.its a never ending task trying to organize it all and keep it that way ❤️
