  • When I first drove this Picanto, the entire range retailed for $17,000 or under, now none are under $20,000.

Much has changed in technology and looks but is it all worth it? Watch this review as it ping-pongs from yes to no and back again. Why? By making Picanto better, Kia made Picanto worse.
    Let me explain;
The current model launched 7 years ago, in 2017. It followed a year of the previous generation which had been wildly successful, and went on to re-form the super-mini segment after its own image. That is a terribly important point to remember, the super-minis are a dying segment within a dying segment.
Passenger cars are mere embers in the fireplace of motoring. Punters are pacing a path to purchase sturdier steeds; SUVs now stand supreme. So how then, did a tiny 5 door hatch come to be so significant? Simple, its quality could not be bettered for the bucks, now there are better for less.
Since 2017 Picanto had been fettled here and there, but the 2023 facelift was more than a new pair of frilly knickers and a pearly necklace, there was a trove of tasty treasures too. Sure, the frilly knickers came in the form of a new front and rear, and sexy they are too, but it is the tech that would be its hasthag. It effectively gave Picanto an extra few year’s grace after-which it will no doubt go the way of the dodo.
    GT is gone, right?
Kia rarely puts a foot wrong, but the axing of the Picanto GT made no sense, or did it? GT gave Picanto a halo, one now slipped to the ankles. With the GT-Line now driving away at 24grand, there was simply no room for a range-topper sitting above it. Some say 24grand for a Picanto is a bit rich anyway.

My wife and I had a 2004 Hyundai Getz as a second car. We have plenty of money and the Getz was still going well, however we order a green Picanto Sport due to it's smoother ride.

Nice no frills car for the person who just weekly travelling is to the Bridge / Bowls Club, the local IGA, Chemist and Dan Murphys. I like them!

You can change that purple on the instrument cluster to either red, green or purple. We did purchase the green colour just because it was different. Not the same old red, white, blue and black.

Everything you need for a suburban runabout; keep part of the back seat down permanently for the trip to the supermarket. Needs a sixth gear for Sydney/ Newcastle, Melbourne/Geelong or Brisbane/Sunshine Coast. All the safety gear; great for a first car or older folk who've lost the need for speed.

    Great Looking Car.
Ruined it by loosing the 1 litre turbo.
    Overseas models got keyless entry.
    Push start
    Sunroof.
Too expensive for the lack of features.
Especially against the new 2024 MG3.

Pity Kia spent the money on all the fancy extras instead of a decent engine, 5 speed auto, proper rear seating and a nicer ride.
I could live without all those drivers aids in such an entry level car.
Mazda managed a proper 1.5L engine, excellent auto, great handling and a proper back seat when they released the Mazda2 over 20 years ago. Ours is still going strong.
Kia seem to simply have got their priorities wrong.
Look for a secondhand Mazda 2 instead.

Agreed but my point is Kia seems to put too much emphasis on bells and whistles and not the fundamentals.
That power output is unacceptable in my view as is the rear seating and boot space.
I simply couldn’t see it as a good choice for a first car.
A second hand Mazda or Yaris etc would be a better choice in my view.
