RAM 2500 Cummins 6.7 GASOLINE Engine | Could This Replace The HEMI in HD RAM Trucks??

  • Cummins is releasing a 6.7 GAS Engine that could replace the current 6.4 hemi in Ram 2500 trucks. I talk about the likely hood of this happening and whether or not a gas 6.7 Cummins is a good gasoline option for RAM HD trucks. I go over the 6.7 gas engine details and explain why Cummins is releasing a gas engine.
    I hope everyone is having a good week! It is good to be back after a stressful vacation which resulted in me buying a house in Newbrunswick. very exciting stuff. but what is more exciting is the potential cummins gas replacement for the 6.4 hemi
    now I have no idea if cummins is talking to ram but the timeline of this new 6.7 gas cummins engine releasing in 2024 does seem to line up with the exit of the 6.4 hemi pretty nicely.
    I also think the high output 3.0 inline 6 twin turbo stellantis engine is not really a good fit for the HD ram truck line up. it seems like that new I6 engine will have plenty of power but it looks much more like a performance based engine vs a work ready engine able to take a beating.
    so it does leave us with a bit of a question as to what is happening with the hemi is the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500. It does seem clear that ram wants to part ways with the hemi but I think they would also want a gas option for their HD line up so is this 6.7 gas Cummins engine a good fit?
    we don't know too many details but it is looking like this gas engine is going to share the diesel bottom end making this gas engine very very strong. which is not a bad thing but it also means this gas engine is going to be heavy and probably not the best on fuel.
    regardless its a cool option and I go in why Cummins is releasing a gas 6.7 as part of their fuel agnostic strategy. basically giving all of their engines the ability to run of different fuels with little differences to the engine making manufacturing cheaper and easier.
    anyways guys a very cool option and only time will tell what actually happens!

    I'm a mechanic myself and when I saw the title I said :if it's going to be true, then we will have the most durable and reliable gasoline engine ever built in automotive history. Tuners and guys with OCD like myself will love it

      If they are truly planning on keeping the same bottom end as the 6.7 diesel the gas version is be insanely overbuilt, those 6.7's are rated to withstand over a 1000 lbs of torque, STOCK

      @@TheGettyAdventures I wish some aftermarket companies come up with a nicely built iron heads too. Inthat case the engine would last 1.5 million miles without an overhaul, even more than modern diesel engines because gasoline engine is so much less stressed

    I've always thought that HD trucks should get a big block gas motor. Ford finally did it with the 7.3 Godzilla. GM wimped out and gave us a bored and stroked L96 with the L8T. If Cummins can make a big block pushrod 6.7 gas motor with forged internals for the Ram 2500/3500 I'm all for it. Over build the thing, give us 500 HP and 500 ft/lbs minimum. I'll buy one first year. Diesel's have become so over complicated and choked up with regulated crap that it's not worth buying one unless you buy two, because one is always going to be in the shop.

      the 7.3 is not a big block, it's bigger but not as big(or as heavy) as your usual big blocks. when the ford 7.3 came out the ford fanboys ran to the moon calling it the GODZILLA when that's not its name, and calling it a big block when it isn't. Ford didn't say anything because well the Fanboys advertising was very effective and ford couldn't get sued for it.

      Agree completely. I have a 2007 Cummins 5.9 pre-emissions diesel which has been great but this new Ram engine would draw me into another purchase. A Tradesman 2500-3500 with the inline 6 would be a sell out.

    Well, now that some hard information has come out and Cummins is starting to tout this technology, all I can say is you were the first to note it and speak to it. Everyone else was wandering around in darkness. Nice job

    I'd love to see Cummins make a 6.7 gas engine based on the diesel!! Even more so if it's going to have a compound turbo setup. Also, the pistons would have to be different, as the combustion chamber in a gas engine is in the head. Not the piston. Very cool concept, imho. 👌

    The negative enviromental footprint of electric motors is much , much worse than that of the internal combustion engine if you consider the amount of rare earth metals, copper, silver and other metals needed to build them and batteries that require lithium, and the cost of pulling that out of the ground has skyrocketed in the last year alone. Then there are electricity costs and the shortage of electric power on the grid and the political decision to shut down coal, oil and natural gas electric generating stations. Charging issues, battery reliability issues and disposing of dead batteries are problems are problems that haven't been resolved, adly, our govt's are no longer of the people so the gov't, not market forces are diciding what is best for our future, so, we are putting the cart ahead of the horse and have no answers to these problems but instead are going full steam ahead in a very haphazard way.

      I agree with everything you said sir! Right on the money. The politicians that make these decisions live in a sheltered bubble. In canada our transportation minister has never actually owned a vehicle. Yet this man is making decision for the whole transportation system in canada.
      Now to play devils advocate. I also don't think we can continue down this path forever either. Whether you believe in climate change or not oil is a finite resource so eventually there will need to be other primary sources of energy and there is nothing wrong with exploring electric options. But like you pointed out there are many problems that need to be solved and until we can reach a point where is makes sense from a economical and environmental stand point It seems unfair to push/force people away from oil.

The environmental wack jobs that write regulations and policy for industry employ the soviet method of top down central planning because heaven knows the people can't be trusted. These people have never picked up a screwdriver, or turned a wrench, most of them are clueless morons and no freind of us working class types.

      My other question is, how much oil do we have? Ive read where the oil discoveries in Alberta and North Dakota alone have enough oil to provide North America with well over 100 years at current usage rates, New York State has the Marcellus Shale oil natural gas resources that lie under half of the State, but Russian backed eco lobbyists have blocked any attempts at drilling for it. there are many examples of this in the U.S. alone, so I think our energy problems are political and not factual.

      You need to quantify your claim, with peer-reviewed research, otherwise you're just another guy on the internet pulling opinions out of his rear-end. I'm not denying that the considerations you mention are real, but without quantified proof, who's to say whether electric or IC is worse for the environment. My intuition is electric "might" be better but we'd need 100 years of evidence to be comparable to IC to be able to prove it, and even then, I doubt we could because both scenarios are not starting from teh same basis, and furthermore, there are additional, uncontrolled factors in the equation like natural events, emissions from other sources, permafrost warming, etc.

Problem is, scientific research has become ideological research, so who ever bankrolls research pay to get the outcomes they want. Science has been corrupted by special interests, as has education, and law enforcement, and elections, and health decisions, and immigration policies, etc, remember covid and the experimental mrna vaccine mandates? Elites deciding major public policy decisions for a nation without the people having input or a voice is tyranny.

    Congrats on your new home! Very exciting stuff. I recently joined the channel and I have been enjoying your content. I am hoping to either get a power wagon or a 2500 limited gas. I want to do light off roading with an overlander RV trailer. What do you think I should get? I cannot find any comparisons between the power wagon and a limited 2500 gas.

      So they are actually pretty similar trucks. You can get the off road package with the limited 2500 which gets you a rear locker and skid plates. Obviously the PW is going to be much better off road but the limited will allow you to have a much much higher payload. PW payload is like 1,450lbs vs like 3,000+ . Also the limited will have a much higher tow rating. PW tow rating is 10,800 lbs vs the limited could have up to 17,000lbs.
      If the tow rating and paylod don't scare you then the PW is a great option.

    I bet it’ll be direct injected to keep the compression ratio high…… maybe they even figured out hggi or whatever it’s called that Mazda was working on. And with having a throttle body on it will really be the reason Cummins goes with a compound setup for the turbos for simplicity and reliability since the throttle body will act as an engine brake when shut

    The Power Wagon already suffers in sand/snow from its weight and a heavier engine wouldn’t help that. But I’m all for a 6.7 gas or a 3.0 I6 if it has the right duty cycle for HD use. Exciting times!

      Ya I could NOT imagine having an extra 600 lbs on the front end. A power wagon with the high out out I6 would be interesting! Could probably easily tune it up to like 600 horse

    It's great to see more ICE innovations... especially for commercial vehicles that need reliability & be able to run continuously at full performance to operate PTO functions or on location services... Batteries simply cannot replace the versatility or reliability or rural operations away from civilization (high voltage/high amperage electricity etc) Cummins builds an amazing product... Eliminating the EPA never ending Emissions problems plagued by ALL manufactures/brands..... Gas is quickly becoming a desirable power source for Light/Medium service trucks like Tow Trucks & utility companies, service rigs etc... Being that the Cummins Gas engine shares most of it's components with the Cummins Diesel... that means the Block & internals are going to be very robust.. and since Diesels are naturally high cylinder pressure by design..... These Cummins will be Very robust & have potential to be built into some MONSTERS.... plenty of strength to put big boost without concern because a Diesel already runs those pressures normally. Great for winter cold temperature starts too.. plus all the tooling is already designed & being built for the diesel.. the only new tooling is for a Gasoline cylinder head & related fuel delivery etc... This could be a very durable powerhouse.....

      YES. I knew a lead shop guy at Detroit Diesel back in the 871 & 671 days. He said the Natural Aspirated Detroit Diesel would last twice as long as TURBOS. He saw all the overhaul and Repairs coming into Truck shop.

      He may be right but i've driven trucks with blown turbos and they barely make it up to like 30mph. Turbos are what give trucks there power.

    What do you think of the Via Motors set up where the v6 diesel at a fixed RPM produces power for a generator to top up batteries when they get low?

      I mean diesel electric equipment has been around for a while. it seems to work well in super heavy duty applications. I don't see why it wouldn't work for a transport truck. but I guess the question would be is that set up going to be more efficient

      @@TheGettyAdventures It definitely would be when you consider each technology is being used in its most efecient way. for example, combustion engines are most efecient at a set rpm and load (think hwy miles). When the combustion engine is runing to power the electric generator it runs at a set rpm and load. The electric motors can give instant torque on or off or variable without loss of efecientcy therefore giving the driver the best of both technologies. Also there's no range anxiety because you have the fully charged battery at the start and diesel to run the generator to top up the battery as required. So you can carry extra fuel should you go bush. Check out Jay Leno's Garage Via Motors.

    In the late 80s ( KABOTA) came out with there ( GAS) block Lawn tractor. The demand was that The Lawn mower market was a want for a Gas Engine in Lawn mower. We had already bought a Diesel Block Lawn mower. KABOTA
    Started building there ( GAS) engine on the Diesel block. Not a new built ( GAS) Engine. It was heavy duty. It will be interesting to see what ( Cummins) builds. You look back on the ( Perkins) Diesel that ( CAT) did. They tryed to build a Diesel Engine on a ( GAS) Block, did not work well. To much for a ( GAS) Engine block.

      Cummins is working with Marine power plants one being the new build passage ferry.
      ( Sea Change) a 70 foot, Zero Emissions Hydrogen FUEL cell.it has a 360 kW. Cummins
      It is integrated with a 100 kWh. Lithium battery and a 2× 300 kW electric Propulsion system.
      Hydrogen FUEL cell power train provide the same operation flexibility as a DIESEL with Zero Emissions. And less maintenance. This is said by company involved with project. This Ferry is doing sea trials in Puget sound Washington at the time of my writing.

      I have a commercial grade 322 John Deere rider tractor that has an inline 2 cylinder Yanmar gas engine in it. The gas engine is based off of the diesel engine they already had in that size so it has all the robust diesel build in a gas version.

      @@paulc3455 interesting. Must be running pretty low boost. The only real advantage to gas HD is there cheaper. But if you can only run high octane it really offsets the cost

      @@toofastnobrakes Unlike guy said in this Video it's gonna be cast iron block and head only head will be built for gasoline . With fuel prices I'm sure it will run 87 octane fuel as people won't buy it otherwise won't make sense.

    you talk about the block being overbuilt for a gas engine. could they maybe make the block identical but with aluminum instead of cast iron? Alot lighter but beefy enough for an aluminum block gasoline engine.

      would not be a bad idea, I think it would all come down to manufacturing costs. if it was cheaper to just run one single block for all fuel types despite some engine being "overbuilt" I Cummins wouldn't bother with an aluminum block.

    Honestly I think that naturally aspirated may be a thing for the gas version engine. They are already going to change the whole head design to accommodate gasoline so they could still be doing direct injection and add newer technologies such as variable valve lift rockers with variable cam timing. Really it kinda feels like they are bringing back the big block just in an in-line 6 modernizing the fuel system and combustion timing. Back in the day gm did have a big block v6. It wasn’t great but worked.

      Cummins already tested the 6.7 gas version on a 2017 Ram 2500 and a Freightliner M2. It’s turbocharged with at least 600 ft lbs of torque:

    Cummins has built natural gas and propane engines for a long time for heavy duty and industrial markets. This is nothing new to them, just new in this platform. I've never been a Cummins fan given my experience with semi trucks however this makes decent sense for the HD Ram platform trucks.

      I honestly don't like working on the big ISX Cummins and the like. DD 60 series were great engines, dare I say the new Detroit diesels are good engines as well.

      diesel mutt88 I never liked the big trucks with the Cummins. But in the Ram it was great until the pollution B.S screwed it up. I would not buy a new Ram with the Cummins today.

    Not a mechanic but a Cummins gas engine would be idea if Ram ditches the Hemi. The Hurricane engine is going to be under a lot of strain in a truck application, even in the 1500. It probably would work for people who use their trucks as daily drivers like me, but when you start to tow with one I feel like the fuel economy is going to fall through the floor compared to even the 5.7 Hemi since the engine is probably going to run rich under a high load to avoid knock under all of the pressure from the turbos. You can't make a bunch of extra power by just adding turbos to any engine without tuning it, more air being forced in means more fuel consumption by default compared to a NA engine. A Cummins gas engine with more than double the displacement of the Hurricane would be under less strain and might even get better fuel economy in a hauling situation.

    I'm guessing that the bottom end would have a lighter rotating assembly. Not just for weight, but for revability. Gas engines don't make a whole lot of power at 1500 rpm. Also, as a package, the truck won't have to have all the dpf shit to carry around. That has to be a couple hundred pounds. Another pro, would be only needing one mounting package, and transmission to cover both engines. They would both have nearly identical foot prints, and share almost all accessories in the engine compartment. That would cut a lot of cost.

      You would think they would have to change the rotating assembly but from what i read the goal is keep everything relatively the same from the head down. Now i strongly question that just like you because even the piston from a gas to a diesel and dramatically different. So i guess we'll wait a see what happens. End of the day I think cummins goal is to have a much of engines that utilize alot of the same parts making manufacturing much easier and cheaper.

      They would change piston and a bit lighter rod. Same Crank. It would need to rev to 6k rpm. But gas torque inline 6 would be around 3500 rpm.

    This is very feasible. The closest example we have to a diesel like gas motor is the Bentley L series V8 motor found in the Bentley Mulsanne. It’s a 6.75L twin turbo V8 that makes 505hp @ 4000rpm and 752ft-lbs @ 1750rpm in base form. This engine in the Mulsanne gets about 16-17mpg on the highway while weighing 6000lbs (not to far off from a gas HD pickup).
    The gas Cummins will most definitely have lower ratings as it’ll likely have to accept 89 octane fuel and have a single turbo setup, but it shouldn’t be too far off on torque…

    I would be very surprised if the Cummins is used. I think it is going to be too heavy. Ram needs a heavy duty gas motor for its trucks right up to the 5500. A lot of municipal groups and businesses don’t want the cost and maintenance of a modern diesel. Ram went out of their way to go in house with the 3.0 diesel then to go with Cummins before. I agree the duty cycle might be too much for the new I6, although the numbers in power are there. Like the 6.4 they could have a truck duty version over a car version. It might end up I6 up to 2500 and 6.7 3500-5500 that could work. I think it will be interesting all the same.

      Agree 👍 the cummins 6.7 gas will be a heavy duty gas engine. Almost too heaby duty for your average 2500. But you make a good point with fleets looking to dump the diesel option for there 3500-5500 and go with a simple gas engine. Only time will tell i guess!

    If dodge just scrapped all their gassers in the trucks, & just outsourced to Cummins.
    6.7 gas & 6.7 Dsl. If we got rid of an all electric, but had a Dsl hybrid like how it is w trains you’d get better efficiency.

      03-04 5.9 cummins are fantastic options for pre-emissions. Post emissions (2007+) I would say anything cummins is a solid option. Duramax isnt a bad option either

      ALL of the diesels before emissions set in are a good bet. If you get a Dodge of that era the autos are trash so get a manual transmission or be sure the transmission is built with the right parts to keep the automatic alive.

    I don't think anybody (official) has said or even hinted that the new Hurricane engines would replace the HD 6.4. They will replace (eventually) the 5.7 and 6.4 passenger vehicle engines. I think this Gas 6.7 would be awesome as an HD 6.4 replacement as long as its close to the same price. It might be a mid level upgrade between the HD 6.4 and 6.7 diesel if its a couple thousand more than the HD 6.4.

      I would hope if they do offer that engine they keep the price down. I do wonder if they plan on removing the 6.4 hemi completely or leaving it as the base option.

    Actually there are two different 6.4L hemis, one is for performance(car, suv) and the other for the trucks. The truck hemi has different stroke for torque.

      The strokes are actually the same on both engines. If the stroke was different the engine size would no longer be 6.4 liters. However you are correct the say they are two different engines because although they share the same bore and stroke they are two very different beasts

    I guess HD have different emissions regulations so it would make sense for them to do a gas Cummins. Will they do it since it makes rational sense though? Hard to say, lol.

      There is alot of speculation but it is an interesting concept and idea. And yes HD trucks don't have to post their fuel milage or go through the same emissions so from that stand point it could be a nice addition to fleet trucks not having to deal with the strict diesel emissions

      @@TheGettyAdventures That's the only reason the Hemi is going away in the 1500. Emissions and fuel economy regulations. Gas Cummins would not make the cut with the light duty emissions, but HD class fly at it IMO. I'm sure it would be a great engine.

    the 6.4 Hemi engine does not have the bottom end that is needed for a HD engine. It's a compromise.

    Your forgot to mention the weight of the moving parts inside the engine which will decrease the efficiency of the gas motor!

      that is very true. I know cummins said they would keep the bottom ends the same but I can't see Cummins keeping the same rotating assembly. diesel pistons and gas piston are so different it would make sense they would be different

    the bottom end will not be the same as the diesels, way to heavy and beefy for a gas application. I don't think you realize just how much bigger a diesel engine is compared to a gas engine with the same displacement, the Diesels are massive in comparison.

    Great video! If it were my money, I'd go for the 6.7 gas over the 3.0 because I know how heavy that truck is and having that small of an engine for that big of truck would be detrimental. My guess is that the 6.4 stays the same, and they introduce the 6.7 gas as an option to compete with Ford's 7.3. If Ram is smart, the 6.4 will soldier on for a few years so that bugs are worked out of the 6.7 gas and reliability is proven. After that, they may drop it.

    The 3.0 is going to be a problem, yes it produces a shit load of power but. Sorry with the high boost numbers and what has been released the 3.0 has to be wound up to produce power. What I expect to see is there will be two camps, occasional user and the commercial side, on the reliability issues. the the normal driver which isn't pushing the engine all the time just on occasion it will work fine. Then the Commercial users that are working the engine on a regular basis will have lifespan issues. Making a 6.7lt gas version of the Cummins will be most likely indestructable and since it is a long stroke engine it if turbocharged have a shitload of torque and hold up well. Actually gas engines are getting better in fuel economy and diesels are struggling to meet polution requirements due to the heavier fuels employed. Yes you have a slight loss in overall fuel economy due to gas is a lighter fuel and has less energy per volume, but that can be countered by creative fuel employment, remember a large percentage of your power is lost in the cooling system. If someone could reduce this loss then a gas engine could be more efficient than a diesel.

    it wont repalce the hemi it will be an 8000-10000 option think bout it an engine that use all the parts from a 12k cummins. this is an outside manufacturer the block everything is the same... it could make 500-600 hp and 600 to 1000 tq depending on what mileage they want to get its going to be a very expensive gas option BUT sign me up im over failed emissions and egr

      I think you are correct about their being a nice price tag with potential engine. how much I couldn't guess. because of some point there has to be a "base" engine for these trucks. so are they just going to jack up the base price of these trucks. I'm not really sure, only time will tell!

    The 6.4 is garbage in a work truck .The engines can’t handle extended idling without destroying the lifters and camshaft most of them don’t even make 70,000 miles

      I mean If I was buying a purely work/fleet truck the 6.4 hemi would not be my first choice. I'll give ya that. you aren't wrong about the idle time. I think the lifter issue is slightly over blown but it is an issue. as a pure gasser work truck I think I would be curious about the 7.3 fords. people seem to like them.

    yeah because governments already hemorrhaging trillions of dollars can afford to pay for hundreds of millions of car subsidies. Electric won't be a serious contender for everyday people for at least another 25+ years. The infrastructure alone cant handle it. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to fully charge a Tesla so how do you get a full charge on a road trip? Sit at a gas station for 2 to 3 hours every 400 miles??? You'd need "Gas Stations" or "Charging Stations" with parking lots the size of Walmart to be able to handle millions of cars sitting there for hours on end.

    There’s no way a gas turbo will be used in a HD truck period ! Can’t run a plow on the front of a turbo pos gas engine !

      I mean I respectfully disagree. A compound turbo set up done right has almost no lag. I get what you are saying though ideally one would want a N/A gas to have that nice streamline power. But i just don't see cummins running an N/A engine. Plus with a turbi set up that engine will make so much more power.
