  • The liver is the second largest organ in the body and provides about 1 500 critical biomechanical functions.
It is, therefore, a very important multi-purpose organ that plays a central role in the body and because of this it is susceptible to many different problems that can threaten the health and wellbeing of your dog, so it is really important to be aware of the signs, causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods of liver disease in dogs, which I will discuss in this video, in order to keep your pet in optimal health.
Now the prognosis really depends on the severity of the disease and whether or not the underlying cause can be treated and eliminated. The prognosis can be excellent if the cause can be eradicated before long-term damage occurs, as the liver is the only visceral organ known to regenerate.
Chronic or severe liver disease, unfortunately, carries a much worse prognosis, and treatment is therefore aimed to manage the progression of the disease and minimizing the symptoms.
So remember, when you notice any of these signs in your dog, take him to the vet as soon as possible, as early intervention and treatment is one of the key factors in treating liver disease and preventing serious signs.
Let me know down in the comments if you ever had a dog that suffered from liver failure and what you and your vet did to help him?

My dog had liver failure but it seemed like cancer, later we found out it was hepatitis from antibiotic poisoning, he would have died if we didn't change his vets, he is now perfectly healthy

What kind of antibiotic caused this? My dog seems to have a similar story. Her liver enzymes skyrocketed in one month (the month prior I luckily did blood work and she was perfectly normal). Vets suspect Leptospirosis or Lymphoma, and due to these suspicions is developing a severely damaged liver. The vet mentioned hepatitis in passing, but I can’t see lymphoma taking over her body so quickly in one month! I’m sure it’s hep or lepto. She’s only 3 years old. Any information on your case would help!

I have my dog on porridge oats which I make up and serve with chicken or a poach egg a grated carrot and apple some fish 3 times a week. .. With warm water.. The oats help reduce the ammonia.....and help the liver She has been on this for the last 6mths and is so much better( no red meat at all...).... She's 9 and the vet didn't think she would make 6.. So every day is a bonus...

@@beverlystickneyhi... Porridge oats are what you make your porridge with ie Scottish porridge oats./rolled oats, . I buy a big bag from supermarket she's a big dog so I get down a lot... I mix two cups of oats with 4 cups hot water and cook Untill soft takes 5minns even as you would make porridge for yourself..(this serves her twice) . Then she has this for breakfast with a poach egg and small amount of chicken mixed in at the end 1/2cup I serve it when cooled down.. Then she will have an evening meal the same but with added grated apple and grated carrot sometimes broccoli or cabbage as, well as more boiled chicken cup and or fish with the cold left over porridge (warm it up in microwave with a little more hot water because it goes really thick when cold) or you can make it fresh... Idont give her any treats at all no dog biscuits nothing extra... Oh I do add some calcium powder or I griind the eggshells which I roast in oven just a teaspoon and I teaspoon fish oil... I do hope you try this and it helps your dog.... At best it will lighten the load off the liver the oats are really good at reducing ammonia and my dog loves this food... Good luck ❤️🙏❤️

All so sad. I did not know how common this ailment is. Our dog has Liver Disease. We tried treating with a week of IV treatment. The enzymes stayed very high. I thought she was to go home and we'd say goodbye fast. It's been five months. I make her food, pieces of boiled chicken with 1/2 boiled egg, carrots, some sweet potato or pumpkin. We add some Huma grade chicken and yams too and even string beans. She gobbles her food. I must treat her fleas. Awaiting a collar as nothing else has worked. We give Milk Thistle. I will add the Vit B now too. She was an ASPCA rescue and has had such a hard life. Lived for years outside with 20 other dogs. No socialization. Originally had to be carried she was so fearful. We had to get a dental visit as her teeth were ground down. Why, one can only imagine. After having her for just a few months she got off her leash. She would not come to us yet tried to get home. We had her on camera around the house. She got out of a large trap set up 3 times. We had her picture up in a five mile radius and received calls but when ppl whistled she'd run. Then she was hit by a car and left on the side of the road. $15000 (Thanks to the generosity of many on a fund set up we only paid 1/3) later and three operation to her back legs she was returned home. My husband carried her out to go to the bathroom. I could only help her with a band which held her back up. It was a long recovery. This poor sweet girl has been through so much we will simply care for her to the best of our ability but when she begins showing signs ... I cannot even write it. You all know what I mean. How much they give love and she was just coming out of her fear, wagging her tail as she'd hide it at first. So happy when my husband came home. She could be mean, vicious but hasn't a mean bone in her body. I feel for all who have gone through this. The Vet said I will know when it is time. IDK about that. As long as she eats well. TY for the video.

Hi Dogtor Pete! Thank you for this really informative video. Can you speak to the rare syndrome Aminaciduric Canine Hypoaminoacidemic Hepatopathy Syndrome (ACHES), which my 13 year female diabetic Pembroke Welsh Corgi has been diagnosed with? She initially presented for elevated liver enzymes that we watched for many years. This past December, a year after a bout with pancreatitis, she was diagnosed with diabetes. As we began managing her diabetes, our vet specialist noticed lesions on her paw pads. Quickly, these lesions made it extremely painful for her to walk. It was then she was tested and then diagnosed with ACHES. She has received 4 infusions of amino acids since, is now on home cooked diet plan and takes Denamarin, Ursodio, and 8 amino acid supplements daily. As a result of the treatment plan, she has rallied and is in remission. At her last visit, her screen showed lower albumin levels, despite her treatment and much to her doctor’s surprise. I am concerned that this may indicate a setback that she will not be able to overcome. We are thankful for our vet specialist and her quick identification of a syndrome that is so rare. Have you seen this in any of your patients? Thank you!

Today I found out my Rottweiler has a liver disease. The doctor did not fully explain what it is but according to him it’s not really severe and he has a high chance of full recovery. He had 293 for his ALT levels which is considered only a little higher than the maximum normal range (according to the blood report). But he does not have any appetite at all. He does eat little pieces of meat from time to time but one bad habit he got from us is eating his pills by coating it with cheese. Now that he has no appetite it’s hard to give him his meds. If anyone can give me any advices about what to do I’d really appreciate it. He’s my entire world and I’ve been able to get through a tough time of my life thanks to Kain. My 11 year old mini pincher mix was diagnosed with liver failure about 3 months ago after going a week were she vomited and urinated constantly as well as stoped eating and having diarrhea. Her liver levels were 2,000+. They also had found a mass on her liver. We started Denamarin and the vet just said that we gotta see how she does and just start preparing for the worst. After a week on denamarin she was like her old self again! We did a check in a month later and her liver levels were down to 200 which was really close to normal. Now, 3 months later, she’s starting to have diarrhea and urinating constantly. I’m gonna make an appointment to the vet as soon as possible. But I have a feeling it will not be good. The vet told me that dogs in her condition usually only live 2-3 months. I didn’t want to believe her since she had gotten so well. But it’s been three months and she’s rapidly declining again. She’s my mother’s best friend and I didn’t have the heart to tell her what the vet said 3 months ago. I sugar coated it to save my mom the agony, but im getting the feeling that the time is coming, and my poor mother is going to suffer greatly.

Her appetite is good, and she acts happy and healthy. I'll have an ultrasound to check for tumors, but for now, I'll add trace minerals and Milk Thistle and pray for the best! My chihuahua is 12, she started having seizures, all sorts of tests, discovered she has Cushing Syndrome, collapsed trachea, & maybe enlarged heart, besides a fatty tumor growing inside her, my vet told me not to do surgery. This little girl was put on 4 different medications, I asked for prednisone for her coughing/collapsed trachea because my cocker spaniel had collapsed trachea & had terrible hacking & prednisone took care of it, given by former vet. I started my chihuahua on milk thistle x2, then she wouldn’t eat her food, she won’t take medicine, period! I have been able to hide 2.5mg prednisone in her food bc it’s so tiny. It’s one reason I want prednisone for her (I’m using some left over from my other dog) I’m not going to put her through anymore trauma than what she’s going through now. Appetite good, she potties outside or on pee pads. HOW DO I know milk thistle is working on her, are there any signs to watch for? @@cindypowell6358 I have been making food for my “liver” dogs for a while now. Once a week I make a huge batch. It starts out like chicken soup by boiling leg / thigh quarters until the bones are soft and the meat falls off. Separate all that , chunk up the meat, skim the fat (it’s bad for “liver” dogs) start adding what you want. I use cubed sweet potato, zucchini, carrots, celery and turmeric for color. Make a real good chicken soup. I also add broccoli, cauliflower, spinach , pure pumpkin and whole egg. ( look up foods for dog liver disease and adjust to your tastes) Just let all that cook. Later add dry long grained white rice. After it cools, you can put it in storage containers. As I use it, I will thicken it if it’s too soupy with raw quick oats which is very absorbent. Sometimes I top their dish of it with a raw whole egg ( we have chickens) also add 1 /4 teaspoons milk thistle seed powder to each bowl per meal. We have three dogs and as I type, my nine y/o “liver” dog is playing with my heeler. She NEVER used to do that! I’m convinced it’s the milk thistle seed powder. ( Amazon. ) Super good for liver repair on ALL creatures and humans. This batch lasts us a week with 3 medium sized dogs. Anyway, this is what I do. Be it right or wrong, these dogs have more energy now than ever!! Hope this helps you!

Hello Doctor, thank you for such a great video. My dog has elevated liver enzymes ALP 1050, ALT 187 because of the seizure medications he's been taking. He is on phenobarbital 45mg twice daily, Prednisolone 30 mg daily, Levetiracetam 4 ml daily, gastric medication and lactulose for his constipation. He's 13 years old and since the last 1 year, he's having very scary seizures. He lost his sight a month prior his first episode of seizures. In my country we do not have facility like CT scan and MRI to find out what is the reason behind his blindness and the seizures. He gets those attacks once or twice monthly even with these meds on. earlier it used to be every week and every day. So cannot cut down on the meds, kindly suggest me what can i add to his diet or what medicines or supplements can help him with elevated liver enzymes. I am giving him liver tonic as well and will be adding milk thistle in a few days. Kindly help me

Thank your for this incredibly precise and informative video. I, and am sure many others, are very grateful for your time and help in allowing us to understand the condition. I did so much research and googling, and your presentation says it all.
My 12-year-old, Giles, a X Yorkie/Daxie, was diagnosed a couple of weeks back and one of the options the vet gave me was euthanasia. I decided that it was not an option, and I have followed all the health procedures, ie home-cooked meals with no animal fat. Plenty of rest and I checked his urine daily. Within a few weeks, the colour was normal even though I was giving him Milk Thistle. Initially the vet prescribed a veterinary Milk Thistle, but I was told to give him the human product as well. When googling the herb, I read that it should not be administered ongoing. It recommended I administer daily for 6 weeks, and then have a 3-week break. I started Giles with the herb again today. So, my big question DogTor Pete is, how many weeks on and how many weeks off should I continue with the Milk Thistle?
I have to say that he has returned to perfect health. His appetite has returned to normal and he is his bouncy 12-year old self again. [God is so Good and I am so grateful for the guidance]
I look forward to your response, and once again, thank you so much. I am delighted with your video.
From Elaine and Giles in Pietermaritzburg

Blueberries, fresh apple pieces, turmeric, joint supplements, no salt green beans, egg whites ( boiled ), chicken, beef etc. I haven’t tried milk thistle? Catherine. I’ve read 5 weeks on, one-two off and this can be continued indefinitely, per a Holistic Veterinarian. I’d started the powered milk thistle, on my picky chihuahua but she’s discovered I’m putting stuff in her food, so I’m ordering the tincture from Amazon. Two drops 3-4 times daily, depending on dogs weight.

Hi Doctor Pete! Thank you for sharing this informative video you explain everything all so clearly.
My 12.7month old Jack russle cross has just been diagnosed with a 6cm lumb on the left side of her liver mass. The specialist who did her ultrasound yesterday ( 7/12/22) reccomends to remove it... I can't effort the specialist to remove it but my vet said he can do it but has only ever done 4 of these operations and one has died before. He also said its risky her going under and may not survive surgery but said there is always risks. Should I get this lump removed? Is she to old for the operation? She also has cuahings disease which she has had for two years. Managed with Trilisrane. The vet and specialist both suggest remove it as if it gets bigger could burst and she can bleed internally.
Please help me make a decision on what to do? Thanks 🙏

@@dmariewalker6880 I agree, my 14 yr old girl showed a liver tumor (huge at 10 x 7 cm - She is a mini fox terrier, weighs 10 lb.) in May of 2022. Vet said they could just take half her liver out. Nope, wouldn't put her through that, pretty sure she would have died. She's still excited about her food, but has lost heaps of weight and muscle. I give her pain med morning and night, she's still excited about walks (shorter) and food (different), and still the queen. Happy with my decision, I know at some point things will get bad, and I will have to do the merciful thing, and dreading that, but taking it one day at a time. My vet said my dog will let me know when its time and I believe that.

When we first noticed she exhibited neurological signals but no jaundice. She had a background of scavenging including eating poop 💩 🤢 so it's difficult to know quite when it all started. @@carolyndowdyvictor1625 I hope your girl dog is doing well.
I don't trust the dog food industry, so before the science hill ID, which I don't trust, I was giving my boy dog boiled skinless, boneless chicken breast with organic carrots, organic pumpkin puree and sometimes canned green beans or frozen organic green beans. And riley's organic apple dog treats.
But since high liver enzymes and then after a month on antibiotics because of the high liver enzymes, which we treated with antibiotics because in the past he had been diagnosed with toxoplasmosis from some cat poop he found, now his kidney values went up, like heading toward kidney damage.
The veterinarian said either go to KD by science hill or use maalox. I looked up maalox safe for dogs and saw that it is not safe, especially if dog has kidney failure or heart failure. So did not give him maalox!
Since he has had pancreatic attacks in the past, wasn't sure if he could handle the KD, so veterinarian said the phosphate levels of the ID and KD are not much difference, so the ID should be ok.
But today he threw up about an hour after his breakfast.
I was giving him more chicken with his antibiotics as well as with his meals, and found out now, that chicken is high in phosphates, like most meats are. So the extra phosphates brought his kidneys values up higher than they should be.
Wish I knew what to do to help him get well and stay well.
I hear this person in this video say high carb and low protein.
So I'm guessing I can give him boiled rice with small amount of skinless, boneless chicken and the juice from the cooked chicken.
      Best of health to everyone.

Since doing IV fluid (150ml) twice a week and changing his diet, he has seemed like his old self for the last 5 months - he runs around and plays, etc. Just recently he's gotten very combative (he has no teeth) and wriggly during IV fluids, so much so that the vet tech was unable to give him fluids this last visit. I'm beside myself. She said "He's just over being poked". She mentioned using something like a cat-bag or a grooming hammock....but I don't know what to do. The fluids are keeping him very comfortable, but the poking is not. If I stop doing fluids, he will likely become dehydrated and suffer while he declines. I don't know what's worse. Does anyone have insight? I feel so much grief. He's the love of my life.

He checks gums, and I assume whites of the eyes.. and told my sister in law the dog is going to die and we have to consider putting him down before organs shut down. I'd there anything that can be done?
This video is the reason we'll call back to his vet and let them know what this new one said. Maybe there's hope, but this vet apparently made it seem like the dog may only have days.

@@no1some186 I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved dog. I have a female jack Russell and I adore her, they are wonderful dogs, you get alot of dog for a little dog. Mine too recently unwell and here in Ireland 🇮🇪 is very expensive, it could cost thousands, and no garentee, its heartbreaking, may not be able to save her, either way, wish I had the choice, so I can relate, just know you loved your dog, and they loved you, you did your best, many loving dog guardians haven't got thousands to spare, its become unaffordable ,and I don't understand why so many dogs are getting so unwell. Dogs used to live longer years ago, and less veterinary care, Much love ❤

My 15 y/o Chihuahua has been suffering liver disease for about three years now. The alleged cause was a clogged gallbladder. The was given a special medicine to unclog it. that really never worked. Her slow and gradual decline continues.

@@vidisweetbaby6094 yeah, we do 80% boiled low fat white meat (usually chicken or turkey), 20% steamed mixed vegetables and a splash of low sodium chicken bone broth. We feed fruit once in a while as treats. With dogs in liver failure or living with a damaged liver, it’s best to avoid red meat, high sodium food, and fatty foods since it’s hard on their liver.

      Hi
We’re researching a lot at the moment, due to our dog having dangerous high liver enzymes. We have always followed a similar recipe and have 3 Coton de tulears.
Dougal displayed no signs until he had a full on seizure. We chose the breed for being healthy, and longevity.
We obviously didn’t do enough genetic testing and even though we had a kennel club history, didn’t realise the implications of interbreeding . Closest relative is great aunt. So we are pretty sure this is the main cause for our dog. He is on medication for life now, but we’re working on getting his enzymes down. 💔

Statistically speaking, it was a hemangiosarcoma tumor of the liver. These tumors are not curable and they rupture and cause internal bleeding and death very quickly. Operating on them is rarely advised because by the time they are caught they are likely to have metastasized. Most dogs are fine until the rupture. I had to put my dog down at the emergency room because of a ruptured, spleen hemangiosarcoma.

My toy poodle is two years old and unspayed, she's experiencing seizures, loss of appetite, couldn't hold her urination, vomitting.
Brough her to the vet today and did a blood test, found out that her ALT reading is 1000 so she was admitted to the hospitals performing IV drip. The vet told me to monitor her condition for the next few days.
Possible diagnosis indicates primary infection or uterus...
Not sure if i should just ask for a check on whether it's caused by uterus and have a surgery performed on her asap...
How long does a dog usually lives after being diagnosed and cured with such disease? and is the chance of surviving the whole process high..?

My dog went into acute liver failure after chewing on moldy acorns outside (I discovered the evidence after rushing her to the ER for extreme lethargy). The doctors claimed that she must have eaten an Aminita Phylloides mushroom (death cap) which grow in CA. But, that week, she only had access to the raised porch so I know for sure it was not a mushroom. I told the doctors that it was acorns with mold inside and they discounted my scientific observation because they had not heard of that-- If a vet has not heard of something then it does not exist in most cases.
The good news is that with supportive care in the hospital, she survived and her liver made a full recovery.
