  • Did you know, that after cancer, chronic kidney disease is considered to be the number two silent killer of dogs all over the world? It often develops unnoticed and when you finally do start to see clinical signs, it is often too late to treat and may take your dog’s life unexpectedly!
So make sure to watch this video as I’ll be explaining the causes, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods for kidney disease in dogs so that you can better prepare yourself and potentially protect your dog from this horrible affliction.
Now your dog’s prognosis will depend on the severity of the disease and its stages of progression. While chronic renal failure in dogs cannot be reversed or cured, treatment and management aimed at reducing the contributing factors and symptoms can slow its progression and may add a few months to a few years of good quality life to your pet’s lifespan.
The earlier kidney failure is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis and the higher the probability that your pet’s life will be extended.
Let me know down in the comments if you ever had a dog that was diagnosed with kidney disease and what you and your vet did to help him?
Here is a breakdown of the info covered in this video:

My 17 year old small dog gradually improved over 4 months and his kidney values are now back to where they were last January - creatine back down to 1.8 from a high of 3.3. He was administered fluids subcutaneously twice. I knew I would not be able to do it at home for him, though I did for another, more docile old dog years ago. He got omeprazole, ondansetron and an antibiotic for months, and after being frustratingly picky, he got his appetite back eventually. He has been on Hills K/D chicken and rice stew for about a month and loves it! He likes crunchy food as a snack, and so we have added some of the Hills K/D kibble for snacks and treats. Over the last month he has put back on a lot of the weight he lost and is so happy and much more peppy. The IM vet thought he had had a hidden infection somewhere that did not show up on lab tests. I am so, so happy with how he is now. We are going to keep him on a kidney food, though may look for one with a lower fat level. An ultrasound showed some concerning results in other organs, but I am hopeful he will keep going for quite a while longer. ❤

Hello. Going through this with my 15 yo Yorkie now. My vet had t prescribed anything except fluids, which I am doing at home, antibiotic for an infection and an appetite stimulant. Was your dogs advanced? I’m wondering if I need to seek a 2nd opinion. He’s at the stage where he won’t eat - I’m feeding him with a dropper and mostly goat milk and bone broth and a paste of canned food mixed with water. Thank you for any info you can share on how you successfully helped your dog get better.

My 10 yr old beagle was a voracious eater and suddenly went off her feed. She would drink a ton of water and then throw it up. It started very abruptly. After a few days we decided to get her checked. BUN and Creatinine and phosphorus were up but no anemia yet. Not sure about her BP. This was all found out yesterday and she spent the night in the hospital getting IV fluids. She has another autoimmune condition called "beagle pain syndrome" which is actually steroid responsive meningitis angiitis, or SRMA. My thought is that her kidney failure may be related to this autoimmune condition. Over the years we have had many dogs. And lost many dogs. My suggestion to all of you is this. If your dog starts showing symptoms of being sick, don't watch it for a few days or weeks to see what happens. Get to the vet ASAP. Don't be embarrassed that maybe you are jumping the gun or being a worry wart. ALL of our dogs who showed symptoms of being ill had a significant disease that did NOT just go away. If they are off their normal feed or behavior or just don't look right, they ARE sick. Go immediately.

My one year old dog got diagnosed with kidney failure.
Now, my dog is a magician. She broke out of her crate and had gotten a brand new bottle of ibuprofen off the table that was in the box still. She managed to chew through the whole bottle while I was away at work.
I looked all over the house for pills and only found one. She was vomiting and having diarrhea as well as tremors when I took her to the vet.
She spent two days in hospitalization, they have gotten a blood sample everyday to check kidney function and have pumped fluids to clear out her system. Luckily, she got to come home today.
My dog has gotten things off the table before, but I never would have expected her to chew up a bottle of pills. I’m just thankful she has a second chance!

Thank You for Producing such and Informative Video on Kidney Disease. My Dog was 14 years old when diagnosed and I almost Lost her at that point, Thanks to a VET that took her in that day...For My Vet of 25 years could not see her that day?? The Vet that Took My Dog in that day, told me if it weren't for my PERSITANCE she would have passed away that day...Which brings me to 2 and a half years later. My Dog has been very Lethargic, Not eating, urinenating frequently and very disorientated and sleeping most of the day. I took her to the VET...they did give her Fluids under the skin. She seems to have 'Come back to Life' When given the fluids and actually more active. The VET did tell me that I will Need to consider the quality of life ...and make the very hard decision of when to put her down. I am currently trying the non vomiting meds and going to give her the fluid under the skin as much as needed. I don't want her to suffer... she is a Tiny Yorkie that once weighed a little over 4 lbs. when I brought her to the vet she is now a little over 3 lbs. I just don't know at what point it will be time to put her down...I am trying to do everything to extend her life...I don't want her to suffer...I hope with all I am doing for her ...I am doing the right thing...

Sadly it was to late for my 12 year old little dog, she wasn’t eating or drinking and she showed us that she didn’t want to fight anymore it had been 5 days that she hadn’t of eaten and our vet said that the kidney failure was untreatable. One of my mums friend is a vet and she helped or little dog by freeing her of her pain and suffering at home in her bed as that was the kindest thing to do as she was to weak to even turn her head. She is in a better place now with my golden retriever that sadly passed 5 years ago.

However, I try to understand they are people too, and looking at my girl’s big picture in hindsight, I couldn’t have lived with myself putting her through endless workups and treatments at her age. She was my best friend and shadow for 13 yrs, and as hard as it was, the best gift I could have given her was yo help her find a peaceful passing. Hope time was started to help heal this loss for you, I feel like I’m in the Twilight zone still myself. :(

I reckon the biggest obstacle with kidney failure in older dogs is that, in advanced age, there are likely other health issues. Obviously if the kidney disease is caught early there are some viable options. I’m struggling with a 17 year old Jack Russell with various health issues not the least of which is canine cognitive disorder. I feel somewhat guilty because there may have been things I could have done earlier that could have made a difference. She has had digestive system issues her whole life and it may have masked some of the signs of kidney disease. Now with the CCD I’m just trying to make her as comfortable as I can and keep her hydrated. I reckon once she will no longer eat I will have a tough decision to make. I guess in an ideal world, any animal (human or otherwise) world pass peacefully in their sleep, but unfortunately that’s not the reality in most cases. My poor best friend still has some good days but they are getting fewer and farther between. I hope videos like yours can make a difference to some pets. I think sometimes vets sometimes just do quick exams and miss important things and also some pet owners don’t know early warning signs to inform the vet to investigate further. And also, let’s not forget, vet care is expensive and while it’s impossible to put a dollar value on a pets companionship, the bills do have to be paid. I’m hoping that advances in quality and affordable health insurance for pets improves over time.

Hey Tom. I am sorry to hear about your doggo. You are right, many other diseases do mask early symptoms of kidney failure and this makes early detection very difficult. It is also unfortunately not something that can be reversed, but only managed to keep the doggo comfortable up to a certain point. It is never fun to think that you will need to make a difficult decision at some stage down the line, but something that I always cherish is the fact that your dog had a full and good quality of life. Very few dogs make it to that age, so she is very fortunate to have loving and caring parents who supported her throughout all these years.
I really hope that you'll be able to spend as much time as possible with your furry child. :)

@TomDavis - I also have a 17 year old Jack Russell who is currently in the hospital with kidney problems (vet has not confirmed CKD at this point, but it looks likely). Similar to you, I feel guilty for not doing more earlier. With him being so old, I thought his lethargy and loss of appetite was due to old age and figured the vet would say the same. I never thought something more chronic was building up, until the more severe symptoms began to surface. He's so tough (as most Jack's are) that, looking back, I think he tried really hard to push through the discomfort and not show any signs that he was slowing down. My goal is also to make my boy feel as comfortable as possible when I am able to bring him home from the vet. I know the hospital bills will be expensive, but they mean nothing if it means they can help extend the quality of life for my boy and alleviate some of his symptoms. Anyway, I mostly want to thank you for sharing your comment. It made me feel a lot less alone knowing that there was another doggy parent of another 17 year old jack out there going through the same thing. I hope your fur baby is doing alright.

My little boy is 13, he had eaten something that was not good. So it came on so quickly, when I went to the vet and get the blood work I was devastated I have been feeding him Pedialyte through a syringe which he is tolerated quite well. 60 cc's of a nutritional supplement, because he was refusing to eat anything and was getting so weak, and so thin. I gave him Ensure, the diabetic one cuz it's low and salt and sugar. Which he did well with and was able to walk and started to.. I tried everything for him to eat, with no avail then gave him some raw hamburger and he had one bite did well with that,. Then refused it I tried everything then I cooked it, he had five b which I believe was just too much for his stomach and threw it up. So frustrating I just want him well. I just want to say thank you for making this video. My dog’s primary vet ran some blood work the other day, because I said my dog was just not acting like himself. He’s survived having zero platelets and is in remission from immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). We adopted him as a senior so he’s struggled with several health related issues, so any slight change in his appetite, mood, energy, etc. we head to the vet. Our primary vet called me the the day after he did the blood work saying he was in kidney failure. I immediately called his internal medicine specialist to make an appointment. It will be a week before we get to see our specialist. I’ve been losing my mind thinking about it. We’ve gone in for a couple of times for subcutaneous fluids and we were sent home with some to administer each day until we see his specialist and get further direction. Your video gave me some reassurance in knowing that I am helping him while we wait for our specialist to develop a care plan to maintain his quality of life, if he has chronic kidney disease.

Good information, easy to understand. Unfortunately, I lost my Sprinkles last August to Kidney Disease. She was diagnosed at Stage 4 at 13 years old (Cavalier/Poodle mix) and unfortunately, although we tried hospitalization, fluids, renal diet, her quality of life deteriorated quickly and I had to say goodbye to her 2 weeks after diagnosis. Now, my other senior dog Kaitlin (also 13, Poodle/Schnauzer mix) was just diagnosed. We caught it a little earlier Early stage 3, so I’m hopeful. She is taken to the renal food quickly and I hope to keep her comfortable longer. (note: both dogs had regular checkups including blood work, Sprinkles last blood work before the one showing issues was 8 months before and no issues at all). Kaitlin’s blood work was 2 months before and although her levels weren’t low, they were in normal range). It’s a frustrating disease, knowing the symptoms to watch out for is so important. The one thing I learned from losing Sprinkles so quickly was to get the blood work done as soon as you think there may be a problem.

My dog is 10 with CKD. She was 8.5 when I adopted her and was in stage 3. She’s now in stage 4. She gets 200ml subcutaneous fluids every other day, only eats kidney care diets and kidney safe treats, and gets anti-nausea medication as needed. She’s a picky eater so I bounce between Hills/Science diet KD and JustFoodForDogs low protein renal diet. She is doing well clinically (happy, playful, eating, drinking, and going potty regularly) but we continue to take her blood pressure and test her blood and urine regularly to monitor her kidney values as well as protein in her urine and check for raised blood pressure. She also gets acupuncture every other week. My other dog with hip dysplasia benefited tremendously from acupuncture (was able to lower his pain medication and he is walk, running, and playful again) and while my veterinarian said there has yet to be definitive evidence that it helps slow the progression of CKD, I do it for both of them. If anything, I figured it couldn’t hurt.

my dog was throwing up and I took my dog in to emergency vet they said it was either an infection or the tylenol her vet prescribed which cause toxic damage to her kidney. she had acute kidney damage which is more reversable because the damage happened within hours versus months. but symptoms and treatment is similar. and with proper care I believe both are reversable. she couldnt keep food and liquids down . when she went in they have her IV lactated ringer and IV antibiotics and warmed her up for 8 hours but they recommended hospitilization. it was too expensive so they gave me an option to take her home. she was given subqutaneous lactated ringer and antibiotics to take home but they said ideal was to hospitalize. she went home and survived she is doing better she can eat drink and make sure ypu monitor urinary output as a nurse I know that it is suppose to be atleast 50% so if she drinks 100ml she is suppose to pee atleast 50ml in thr next 8hrs to 4 hrs. firat she started peeing every 8 hours then she started peeing every 4 hours which was a good sign that her kidneys were working better. We have a 12 year old chihuahua who has cushings and is diabetic. She was also diagnosed with kidney failure May 2, 2022. Her BUN on that day was at 48. So we began giving 150 ml every other day as instructed. We brought her in for another visit to another vet on June 18, 2022 and her BUN was at 82. We were so stunned and very concerned over the new numbers and were told to give her fluids twice a day. Her prognosis seemed bleak. Well, unfortunately we tried everything and she simply would NOT tolerate the twice daily fluids. We had to settle for once a day and pray it was enough to help keep her going. Today, July 28, 2020 we took her to a third vet and to our dismay, he admonished us for giving her fluids and asked us why we were doing that to her. We told him we were instructed by an ER vet to give her fluids twice daily and had to settle for giving her fluids once daily instead. He told us “STOP!! STOP POKING HER! She doesn’t like it and why would you want to do that to her???!” Needless to say I felt shocked and offended that he would question us over following a veterinarian’s instructions when all that time we had been feeling so guilty that we were failing her by giving her only one treatment instead of two. He said 150 mL a day for a 14 lbs dog is way too much and added that we should have never been giving her that much. As though somehow it was an indictment on us for mistreating her. He took her to the back to check her kidney numbers and were we ever shocked when he came back 20 minutes later and said, “YES, STOP the fluids. Her BUN is at 29.” She’s not in renal failure. She’s at stage 2b or 3. With three different veterinarians telling us three different things within six weeks time what are we to think? While I am thrilled to death that her BUN was at 29 I can’t help but think that if we were “giving her too many fluids” her number would’ve been 7, 8 or even lower than that. Isn’t the fact that her BUN is now 29 proof that the fluids were actually working? I only want to do what’s best for my dog. It’s just that simple. We are concerned that if we stop the fluids that her numbers will go soaring back up into the 80s again. Can you please help give me your insight on this. I’m not asking for any advice. I’d just like to know if you have any idea why he doesn’t attribute the good results to the daily fluids. We would love nothing more than to discontinue the fluids. It’s been such a stressful thing for all of us.

I just bought some pet wellbeing kidney support also. you can only hope, but at this age it's quality of life for her not prolonging her life miserably for my own selfish gains.

I hope you find the time to respond. My dog is 13.5 years old and was recently diagnosed with diabetes, then two weeks later CHF and now three weeks later she started vomiting, stopped eating totally and drinking little to no water. Took her to the vet this morning where we did a blood test and every level is too high. The vet kept her to administer fluids and see if she can get her levels back to where they need to be, however, she did not want to give us false hope.
I live in the Caribbean and wanted an opinion from someone who may he more experienced. Do you by chance do online consulting. My heart is heavy to put her down. The vet did say she's in no pain.

My dog is about 16 years old ,pit-bull and boxer mix and a very sweet dog , never been sick in his life except 2 days ago . He was vomiting and had been drinking a lot of water . I took him to emergency and his kidney reading is very high . He was recommended to stay overnight but it was so expensive and I could not afford it . I will take him to his primary tomorrow .

I just lost my baby boy of 16 years a few days ago. Its really tough. He had CKD. As far as the renal diet, he wasn't having any of it. I literally purchased everything on the market available and he wouldn't touch the stuff. Even mixing it with other tasty items he would just separate and leave the prescription diet food in his bowl. The vet said its quite common that dogs dont like the stuff. If you can get your dog to eat it then thats fantastic, it would really benefit them. I ended up feeding him a regular senior food combined with a product called "Phos bind" . He was also on a blood pressure medication. The anti nausea pill didnt seem to have an effect and the appetite stimulant gave him diarrhea. Little by little i had to mix more and more meat in his diet just to get him to eat at all. He held on for another year or so but eventually he stopped eating and drinking altogether no matter what i fed him.

One thing you said really scares me. I had 2 Boston terriers until this week. My boy is depressed, because he misses his sissy as much as I do. I didn’t realize that stress would make his kidney disease worse. They were litter mates and they would have been 13 this week. My little girl died suddenly, which was a shock, because she’s always been very healthy. Im trying really hard to give him all the love I can, but he’s been sleeping a lot. I’m looking for homemade recipes so I can control what he’s eating, but…not only does he have kidney disease, he also has a grain allergy. And to make matters worse…he’s very picky eater. Anyone have a site I can visit to find home made food for him?

I have a question. I have bwen to a few Vets with my Schnoodle who is in stage 3 failure but not one has ever taken his blood pressure. In fact, in 35 years of owning dogs and providing medical care regularly, never saw any vet take blood pressure. Why would that not be done?

If yourvpet isnt eating please give him/her chicken broth with little shredded chicken without any salt, your pet will drink it , then you can feed plain cooked rice with chicken broth & shredded chicken. Its not only easy for your pets digestion, but with the smell of the chicken broth it'll entice them to eat

My dog is 15yro never been sick but cataracts led to painful glaucoma my Vet recommended to use otc liquid Paracetamol for pain She didn't warn about toxic deadly side affects over a few weeks. I cannot comprehend the logic using such a high risk drug. It ulcerated his stomach throw up blood, destroys red blood cells. Overdoses cause fatal kidney and liver failure. She denied paracetamol poisoning or overdose as his liver/kidney results weren't ok. He almost died ultrasound sadation she suggested it might be his time to go and his old and blind. I took him home to recover, had diarrhea over night. Lost appetite, no food, I gave him colostrum twice a day and heaps of dried liver treats. His red cell count normalized. That was 8 weeks ago. He's still slightly weak but loves walking and sleeping a lot. Now he's drinking and urinating more and having bed accidents. I believe the affects have taking some time to show up and his symptoms spell KD. Had he been euthanized I doubt what killed him would be clearified or confirmed Paracetamol caused. I beyond pissed off and out of pocket almost 3k.

Switch to a raw diet and you will see instant changes. "Prescription" diets are lacking the proper nutrients and are far too dry. Whole foods and supplements help greatly.
My Golden was diagnosed with super early stage II CKD in December 2022 and today, her levels have remained the same.

My chiweenie Lucy is 12 and just got diagnosed . She has always been a picky eater, but now it appears that even though she wants to eat, something is going on where she doesn't keep anything in her mouth, she drops everything out as if it hurts. The vet has thoroughly checked her mouth and there are no issues. Any thoughts?

I just found out that my 15-year-old PTSD service dog, (retired), Micah, a Chihuahua, has CKD. In November, I took him to the vet for bloodwork before his dental and the vet called and said that his kidney labs were not abnormal, but were right on the edge. She said we’d watch and wait.
I switched vets because of something unrelated to my dog’s care and they ran a urinalysis and told me that he is in kidney failure. We’re going to be starting him on a kidney diet. He has no symptoms. Does this mean we caught it early enough? Are there any treats I can give him or are treats no longer an option? Thanks for all you do.

I’m confused someone help! My dog likes to drink a lot of water, but he can hold his pee for 8 to 12 hours. His kidneys are noticeably large. I can see the outline of them when I shave his coat every so often. The guy in the video said the kidney size would decrease if he had kidney disease.
