      I’m 50. It is 4:30am. I am half packed for a trip that leaves at 7am. I am waiting for the panic to kick in so I can recklessly finish packing.

    Oh jeez yes my son no clue about time. Although he can tell time quite well. Avoidance of tasks. Mornings we have the 5 things...meds,food,dressed, brush teeth, brush hair..boom that’s it and we still have issues of getting dressed takes an hour.

      My son who is 8 with severe ADHD gets dressed on the stairs, take his meds along with a glass of milk. Then he pick up his bag and a banana and we go together to the bus. He eats the banana while he is waiting for it to come.
      I find this very affectice. Because my son doesnt function this earley in the mornings so I loward my gard. Breakfast he eats in school when he gets there and he also has snacks during the day the teacher can give him if its neccessary. He doesnt eat mutch during lunch, though he has provided food. So snacks and fruit during the class is highly recomendble. Of course it should be something full of vitamins and nutrition.

    In addition to dealing with this at home in regard to chores, my daughter's school reports noncompliant behaviors such as refusing to answer a question or respond with "I dont know" "it's too hard" or simply no. What suggestions do you have as to how I or the school can approach reducing this and what about adhd makes her do this? She also has a language disorder stemming from a hearing loss during infant and toddler years.

      Tara if she's in an ABA program they should figure this out. tell them this issue should be integrated into her program.

    Do you have videos that drill down on some of the strategies you mention:
    - conceptualising time
    - inner coach
    - motivation ..

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Conceptualizing time is covered in webinar 3 of Executive Function Crash Course webinar series.
      Building internal dialogue is covered in webinar 1 of the same series.
      Improving resiliency to persevere through non-preferred tasks is covered in webinar 4.

    As a member of the forgotten generation of ADHD girls, now adults, how would you recommend building these skills?

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amy, are you asking me how to build them as an adult, or to help parents help their kids build them?

    • @moongoddess1978
      @moongoddess1978 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You can reparent yourself and fill in your skills gaps as an adult with ADHD with The ADHD Dude Membership site (it’s aimed at parents but it helped me and my daughter), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, medication, and extra coaching if needed in specific areas like organization or nutrition.
      The best advice I can provide as a 44 year old woman diagnosed at 21 is not to sell yourself short and realize that you have adapted better than you think. Part of the insidiousness is the way our brains trick us into these false beliefs that we can’t when we absolutely can when we feel an emotional connection and drive. This is why music is helpful or remembering your why or setting a deadline with a reward at the end.
      Ryan also mentions in his membership “purposeful recognition and praise” which is really important to incorporate for yourself. Encourage yourself. Tell yourself you’re doing a great job. Your subconscious absorbed all that negativity when you were little. You have to turn it around.
      I highly recommend Mel Robbins’s 54321 method to jumpstart as well. She has ADHD.
      Don’t put projects on your to do list. Break it down into tasks. Persistence not consistency.
      And though it’s hard sometimes, do keep up with your health. Get regular labs (vitamin D and iron deficiency can cause fatigue). Exercise and eat regularly. Get enough sleep. You will be more focused that way. Good luck!

      Also: the more you get done, the higher the dopamine in your brain. Small wins lead to bigger wins.
      Dopamine is higher in the morning. Don’t waste it on your phone. Get ish done earlier when you’re fresh!

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude Talk playlists are my videos for kids. There's a general Dude Talk playlist, and then ones by age group. I don't make videos for young adults, as they would not be viewed enough to invest the time in making them. Thanks :)

    But how do we help our high school kids to develop those stratagies to get through non-preferred tasks? I have a whole team of people. Therapist, psychiatrist, school 'team lead,' and I dont know how to guide them- they don't teach what you do. Thanks! Sharon

    My daughter at 9 years had developed the habit of going to toilet and flush without actually using the toilet, She used to do this 6-7 times in an hour. Now she is 12. I still don't know why she did that. But when she was treated for anxiety , it went off. Now she developed the habit of touching the wall surfaces , going one step back before walking forward, opening the tap thrice before using it. Put on the switch thrice before the lights are on. We don't understand why such habits are developed.

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This sounds like OCD, it is easily treatable, and you have to learn how to not accommodate her anxiety.

    How do you tell if your child is really struggling with this kind of executive functioning or if their just being stubborn and/or lazy?

    • @ADHDDude
      @ADHDDude  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So I have a thing where I don't call kids "lazy" because I think lazy implies they have a character flaw. I always presume that it is the result of lagging executive function skills which includes a lack of ability to sustain attention to non-preferred tasks/subjects.
