Fresh from Overhaul - Weathering an Express Locomotive

  • Fresh from Overhaul - Weathering an Express Steam Locomotive
    This week I weathered my Princess Coronation class locomotive. I attempted to give the engine’s boiler, cab and tender sides a clean and polished look, with some the inevitable build up of grime just starting to accumulate after a few runs.
    1 - I used my airbrush to spray the wheels, underframe and front end a 50/50 mix of Tamiya grey and black.
    2 - I used a 50/50 mix of Tamiya brown and Railmatch Rust to spray the tender interior and highlight grime on the underframe and cylinder fronts.
    3 - I cleaned the wheels using Isopropol Alcohol, a 9V battery and a cotton bud.
    4 - I used T-Cut car paint restorer to give the engine’s boiler, cab sides and tender a glossy, shiny appearance. This worked better than I anticipated and up close looks like the paint had been polished with a greasy rag. I gently rubbed the T-Cut onto the model with a cotton bud, then gently removed any residue with a soft cloth. Be careful over the decals with this as the T-Cut can damage them if left on for a while and if you run too hard.
    4 - I added Humbrol smoke weathering powder to the smokebox and cab roof to add a matte finish in contrast to the shiny polished boiler.
    5 - I added coal to the tender and secured it with diluted PVA glue with a drop of washing up liquid.
    6 - I added grease marks to the buffers using matte black paint and a cotton bud
    As always, thanks for watching.

    Some people say weathering takes away some of the majestic power these locos hold, I would strongly disagree with that, you make them look alive.

      @@MouldyRaspberry I lived less than a mile from the Polmadie depot (66A), so I saw this entire class on a regular basis. They always impressed me. Saw them mostly in the BR green livery, but also later in their red and blue liveries. Least favorite was the blue.

    You truly have a talent for bringing out the best in your locomotives. I do like the pristine look but you proof that just the right level of weathering adds to their charm. Not sure I’d have the guts to try it on an expensive model though.

    I'm not a model layout enthusiast, I have no layout but I do love the old steam trains. They were pulled out of service not long after I was born so apart from trips like the Jacobite Steam Train in Scotland that goes over the Glenfinnan viaduct or some local Welsh small trains like the Brecon Mountain railway, both of which I've been lucky enough to travel on, I've never seen them run as living engines on service runs. I do have four engines as display models, one of them is a beautiful Princess Coronation Class, LMS 6233 Duchess of Sutherland, It is my favourite. All mine of course are pristine in cases, with a little track diorama I made, I love the weathering you did to your locomotive, as another commenter has said, it made it look alive.
    EDIT: I would dearly love to see my four locomotives running in real life, in person, but doubt I ever will.

      @@MouldyRaspberry Don't forget to hang out of a left hand side window Ocoming from Fort William) to take pictures over the Glenfinnan Viaduct both as you go towards it and as you go away from it....well worth wearing glasses too as grit will get in your eyes. There's nothing like the taste of freshly funnelled coke in the morning....
      Hope you have a great day for it.

    Oh brilliant, you just gave her enough weathering to make it individual to you. I'm not sure I could achieve such great looking results myself. Your use of T-cut really gave the paintwork a nice shine like the loco has been cared for by the locoshed staff, which having such a prestigious loco on their books I am sure they would have. Very nice indeed, best regards Dave.

    Magnificent! In an ancient Triang book of trains Terence Cuneo described his method for transforming a toy train into a model train - by weathering it! The secret he said was to make it look heavy and the article was illustrated with the archetypal Triang toy train, an 0-4-0 Nellie. The results were spectacular, so spectacular that I got out my paints and got to work on my immaculate brand new Hornby 5156 Ayrshire Yeomanry. I got a rocket from my mum and the model was confiscated until further notice! I still have it today (I got it back eventually). The late Princess Coronations were magnificent. Such a shame that Sir William Stanier FRS wasn't preserved. This one looks wonderful. Only realistic smoke and steam are missing - there's a definite market opportunity there for a convincing smoke/steam generator which doesn't make the locos look as if they're smoking a B&H!

    This video is so important on so many levels... Rarely can we see a "weathering" such as this one (out of overhaul) and yet it's most important as it's also how we should weather our fleet of "preserved" locomotives for our "modern era" layouts. Also having one or two engines weathered as such even on a "Big-4" or "Early BR" layout is also vital as is the variety of levels of weathering on the motive power fleet... The trick using the T-Cut has surprised me, as I'm mostly using a mix of gloss and matt varnish from Vallejo (acrylics) to create this kind of effect (or adding satin varnish to the paint if I repaiint an engine) to achieve this kind of effect. Thanks for sharing your experience and techniques with us, and let's hope we'll see again this kind of "How To" video in the future.

    Amazing. I wish I new how to weather like that. I have a video idea for you. A freight train (pls BR standard 4 or 5) has a forget coupling on it's second to last freight car and the 2 detach themselves by accident. A passenger train then nearly collides with them and a small steam loco comes and moves them to a siding. 😀

    Hey hey hey it’s a New Year and it’s Mouldy Thursday.
    Hello Lewis
    Great work with the subtle weathering as always and with the use of T Cut. I never thought anyone else used that on their models? It really is great stuff to have in the tool box but also comes with a warning of over use can be fatal to a model as I had happen to me when experimenting with it.
    I also like the new music you have used in your vlog. I had noticed quite a few other channels borrowing your signature music so to speak lol. Anyway the new music goes really well with how you construct and film your vlogs and shows your originality.
    Stay safe, keep sharing and model on.
    Regards
    Lee@NEAR

      Thanks Lee, always appreciate it. The main thing I think I’ve seen people use it for removing transfers for renumbering etc. I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered how useful it it. Yes I can imagine if you scrubbed for too long you might have some paint coming off!
      That’s funny you say that I noticed the exact same thing - that’s partly why I found some different music this time!
      You as well 👍🏻

    This layout is great and I watch every week any chance of running to a day timetable again any time soon? Also are you thinking of istalling lighting around the layout for "night runs" ?

    Hi Lewis, great effects on the loco and very useful tips and nothing like seeing a practical show and tell. Did you fix the powders with a coat of varnish or would it just come off with handling?

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Chris, glad you liked it 👍🏻 I didn’t in this case, just because I wanted to keep the contrast between the matte smokebox and the glossy boiler. I don’t touch the locos really once they’re on the layout.

    I’m starting to convert my stock over to the kadee style couplers and found on a new Bachmann 2-6-4t the rear couplers sits far too high, was just wondering if you’ve had similar issues and how you got it lower as it’s pivots under the rear bogie

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tim. I had the same issue on my Bachmann Standard 4MT tank. I ended up bending the Kadee down, just need to be careful you don’t snap it! Heating it up on a lamp or something can help. Why the manufacturers can’t just have the NEM pockets the same height I don’t know...

    Whats your advice on how to apply the t-cut? And how many times do you go over to get that polished metal effect?

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just once - better to go gently so as not to take too much of the paint off. Cotton bud works well, then polish it with a cloth after.
