I think it depends on the media we ingest. Dexter Filkins and other reporters went into great detail about the war, the factions and their levels of violence. Frontline on PBS then contextualized the known reporting into some outstanding 2 hour long documentaries that dig into the origins of ISIS, the sectarian violence from neighborhood to neighborhood that compounded. There are several of them but here's a more recent one from 2016: www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/the-secret-history-of-isis/

As a Scientist/Nerd, I used to be really judgmental of the "Jocks"/Meatheads and thought they were "Primitive Savages" who were duped by the politicans.
This podcast has really opened my mind to how ignorant, and just blatantly wrong I was.
I now have incredible admiration and respect for all Military personnel.
After all the stories I've heard of you describing the enemy,
It really made me realize how fucking lucky and spoiled I was to live in a land of Freedom and resent the people who provide me that.
I'm truly grateful for these incredible men and woman who take it on them risking life and limb to protect ungrateful turds like me.
I've been humbled and even been inspired by it to reach new goals.
It's a whole new motivation for me.
I used to get mad and angry at problems I wouldn't understand.
    Now every struggle is GOOD.
It gives me a better chance to improve so that the next time I can annihilate the problem, and the "discipline insurgents" with precision, and alacrity.

There's something besides education that marks someone as being smart. Being an open mind. Your post here tells me you're pretty smart. I don't have the kind of education that you most likely have. That is a guess on my part. I do have a very broad range of Interest and can converse intelligently on many of them. I also try to keep an open mind. You can be thrown buckets upon bucket mud which is a lot I call either garbage information or improperly interpreted information or just bad information. I have learned that if you sift through it with a little effort once in awhile you find a nice little Raw diamond that little nugget can fit a whole in a whole different thought process or idea. I also found that you can get some really good truths from the most outrageous and absurd sources. But if you don't go through the process of listening or waiting through the mud you'll never find them. It is okay to challenge what you believe to be true. If it is the actual truth it will with stand the challenge. If not then you have redefined the truth or can search for the truth. Always remember the truth is not the only goal oh, it's the journey to get there that counts just as much.

Heavy, pitch dark, and sobering but necessary to hear for anyone, and certainly every humanitarian who values the trinity of Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as well as Americans who don’t value their country and its many graces.
The methods of mankind’s unspeakable brutality exhibited in the Middle East spoken of here, largely unknown about in the west, make the killing by gas chamber or being shot, (WWII) look like child’s play in comparison. The chilling difference perhaps was the “systematic extermination” of peoples. Understanding history, all of it, is vital to our continued survival.

Respect both of you for your contributions to leadership (Jocko) and understanding of the Palestine/Israel (Darryl). Re; the cruelty of the Iraqi regime: My Iranian partner volunteered as an ambulance driver at 15 during the Iran-Iraq war, but also played a more logistics role in assisting fighter soldiers. Every Iranian soldier had a suicide pill in their kits, because the Iraqis would tie captured Iranian soldiers legs to two different tanks and split their bodies apart. His regiment's commander was such a brilliant young career soldier, that Saddam Hussein once declared he could "start world war three" if Iraq had just one officer as capable as him. The commander and my partners regiment was constantly overachieving, and getting in trouble with the Iranian generals as a result. It appeared that Khomeini was just using up thousands of young men, to distract them from socio-political concerns, and the commander complained that he could of finished the war in one week if he had been given free reign by the generals (they once captured Iraqi Oil fields- but got in trouble because they hadn't been 'asked to".). The officer was eventually assassinated at the behest of the Iranian high ups (officially by crossfire), and my partner spent two months in a military prison when he turned 18, because he refused to fight as a regular soldier with a gun for what he now realised was a "fake war". US Generals at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis toyed with gunning down a planeload of US College students to pin it on Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba, horrifying JF Kennedy. I am surprised you are dismissing out of hand the possibility that the troubled and possibly psychopathic Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coterie would balk at sacrificing 1,400 of their own people for a political mandate to smash Hamas and Gaza. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2020-04-23/ty-article/.premium/narcissistic-authoritarian-hesitant-alarmist-netanyahu-of-1999-is-back/0000017f-f4c5-ddde-abff-fce5476c0000

Saddam had already declared war on Iran and millions of people died from it.
It's completely possible Saddam would have done another thing that would kill even more people on a big scale.
Yes, the insurgents and the war killed and harmed a lot of people.
But the insurgents don't have the resources of the full Iraqi state and aren't capable of committing atrocities on a massive scale like Saddam could.

@Farsha 17 That's only when you use the "bomb them all to death" strategy. Like what Russia is doing in Syria, and what NATO used to do.
The US has learned a lot about fighting insurgents since the Iraq war.
Modern US strategy against counter insurgents is to get the local population to like you (through building relationships with the population and development aid) so they rat out the rebels/insurgents hiding among them with anonymous tips to a tip hotline.
This is all from the book Small Wars, Big Data.

28:00 - the military and political leaderships of each country involved is at fault for not showing their citizens the pictures and evidence of the tortures. We've become too civilized (protecting our wives and children from true understanding of the world around them) for our own good.

I understand your perspective, but I have to disagree with your conclusion. If your point is that the war was a net good for Iraqi civilians, you haven’t made your case by describing the horrors of the Hussein dictatorship. Everyone wanted him removed & there probably would have been a revolt, his sons were weak.
Over 300,000 civilians died, would Hussein have killed that many?
    How many died from bombs?
How many died by gunshot because the soldiers didn’t know who to shoot or care
How many tortured by US officers in black sites designed for torture
How badly were the people deprived of necessities because of the war? Food, water, electricity? The ability to sleep without the sounds of war?
How many killed by IEDs planted on roads to kill Americans
How many tortured because they spoke to an American
How many helped Americans and were left behind to be tortured
It seems the replacement isn’t any better, just more political and more powerful
Where Hussein’s sons would have been weak, we placed stronger men in their place
I understand your personal stake in the conflict, but the world has always had evil tyrants & they are always eventually overthrown. With a thoroughly politicized military and the shortcomings you describe, how can you support something so rash? I knew a man who spoke with an admiral just days before “shock and awe”, the admiral was filled with hubris, joking about wiping out all of Hussein’s army & rebuilding. He assured my acquaintance that the fighting would be over in a few months and the military would stay to rebuild, but they’d all be out in less than 3 years. He was high on his own self opinion and couldn’t wait for the killing to start. We can’t support a military with jackass leaders like that. I don’t think they had a plan, they were so filled with their own feeling god like power.

Doing the good work guys. One question I would love to ask someone as experienced as Jacko is this question -
I'm sure that I am not the only person who has noticed the conspicuous absense of radical islamic activity in the West over the last 6 years. Why? I'm sure they are still there. I can't help but feel that if I were them I'd lay back and wait for all of the political turmoil to continue to weaken the enemy. Any attacks could potentially wake us up from our self-induced propaganda stupor and unite us. What are your thoughts?
I pray that you are on TH-cam etc for many years.

Darryl, the barely restrained emotion in your voice as you read for the last few minutes, and the horrific context of those words, makes me respect your sacrifice beyond anything I thought possible. I don’t mean a physical sacrifice, though I’m sure there are some…No, you sacrifice your mental health, maybe even your sanity, dealing with the highest levels of evil humanity can pull out from the darkness trying to make the world a little bit better of a place for an largely ungrateful half of our nation. And I think you nailed why exactly, the news reported is so skewed that it really isn’t news any longer. It’s become ideological editorials, propaganda, downright blatant falsifications.
I have friends that have emigrated from the Middle East and south east Asia and am always surprised at how quickly their experiences are dismissed or rationalized by people around them because it doesn’t fit their coworkers/acquaintances perception of how evil Bush and America was just in it for the oil. It seems like the atrocities committed are downplayed, justified or just plain ignored by people who’s minds have been programmed to believe that America and her self-appointed role of world police is reprehensible. And while I’m not thrilled that we take that role upon ourselves sometimes, I always ask myself “If not us, then who?”Humans constantly prove that they’re frequently incapable of controlling their inner darkness, so if not us who else could? But maybe the better question is who else would be willing to step into these atrocities and say enough is enough?

The cognitive dissonance of two American veterans talking about torture in Iraq without mentioning Abu Gharib is astounding. I know both Daryl and Jocko are intelligent people so it is surprising that they haven't made the connection that fighting the "savages" made them (Americans) savage as well and that their savagery in Iraq knew no bounds.

" I will act in such a way, in doing so, simultaneously willing, that everytime "x" happens the universe will also. That's the loosest paraphrase, but terrifyingly applicable. Social media is an amoral construction, true but this impact , without examination is a source off empowerment of our worst and best indeterminate in a global way. Digging deep indeed gentlemen.
