  • Always Board Never Boring ranks Moonstone by Goblin King Games in position 21 on his list of favourite games of all time. In this video he takes a (relatively) deep dive into the rules and how to play to help explain why he likes the game so much. This video covers all of the main rules with accompanying review-type thoughts, but is not a replacement for reading the rules. Minor rules may be omitted or truncated for the sake of brevity in an already rather long video.

    Great breakdown of the rules, very clear and concise. This is the first one I've seen that actually talks about the follow-up attacks and I really appreciate that because I was definitely curious what that yellow highlighting meant!

    Those are some very pretty minis indeed! A tad, uh, 'entertaining' for use in a regular RPG, but they're really pretty.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are very much their own thing. I don't use mine for anything other than Moonstone, but I have a lot of miniatures games where the miniatures don't migrate to other settings so that doesn't bother me.

    I've had my eye on Moonstone for a while & finally bit the bullet a few hrs ago & spent a small chest full of plundered gold 😜 8 boxes to be honest 😱 I also looked at Hagglethorn Hollow, OMG, this is perfect for Moonstone but a bit pricey unless you can print it. It was also showcased on Adam Savage's Tested Ewetube channel.

      Johnny does great work. His art and miniatures for the Jim Henson games are really nice too.

    How are the cards packed? Do i buy a deck with all characters or do i buy a character and get its cards with it?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      You get the character cards in with the miniatures. The Arcane and Melee deck, is available together in a single box, and the campaign deck is another box.

    Moonstone, He-Man, plus the continuation of Space Crusade. You got a lot of potential play throughs.

      Eventually I would love to be in a position where I can do one playthrough every other week.

      @blackraptor311 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Don't push for every week. I say keep with one game at a time when you can. You are on Space Crusade so I say keep going with that (as a suggestion of course).

    A good idea to stick to one faction... yeah, I missed that boat. I just get everything. My son buys most of the goblins, though.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very difficult because everything is so nice. I guess I should have said “to begin with.”

    • @jasonnewell7036
      @jasonnewell7036 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I wanted to go goblins to begin with, since I am a long time goblin player, but my son gravitated towards them, and now my main is gnomes. I've recently bought the giant Brunhilde because she meshes with a bunch of the gnomes really well. My other go to subfaction is Fauns.

    I have to say that this game is the opposite of what I keep encountering.
    Usually I detest a game's mechanics but like the miniatures.
    This one has miniatures that just... bother me. Not my aesthetic, but I'm glad you enjoy.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      As a fan of Brian Froud, these are right up my street. The whimsical, comedic aesthetic isn't going to be for everyone though.

    Sounds a little like Mordheim in theme. I like the use of goblins. Not sure I'll actually want to play this game. Seems crunchy and I don't have the patience for dozens of rules to remember.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s much more of a whimsy fairytale setting than Mordheim. It’s very silly. I would say the number of rules is actually quite small. The crunch really comes in the melee combat. The core systems are very easy to understand but there’s a lot to think about in terms of how the cards will interact and trigger combos.

    • @jasonnewell7036
      @jasonnewell7036 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any rules you need to remember are printed right on the cards you will be using. The basic rules are very easy to remember.

    So its another kill team/ war machine/ Hordes game. :/

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Apart from using miniatures and terrain I don't think there is much to compare between them. Moonstone doesn't use dice for any kind of combat or special ability resolution. You don't build teams with points or have a leader on the battlefield. Characters in Moonstone don't even have a stat line in the sense that characters in Kill Team or Warmachine do.
