    Today I'm joined by Jason to check out this new fantasy-driven Skirmish from Goblin King Studio; Moonstone!
    The Dominion and Commonwealth are largely at peace, but when the sun sets and the Moonstone begins to grow from the ground their forces will fight a shadowy war for its control. Wizards will pay unheard-of prices for this commodity that dissolves in the sun and alliances and friendships will be put on the line to be the Troupe that controls it.

    Man, that's such a clever way of implementing melee into a game. I've really got to up my game design skills, there's so much variety in the tabletop market.

      It's a very fun way of cutting dice, it looks like they got some inspiration from board games, I am very curious to see how it will work out long term, whether it detracts from longevity(eventhough it wouldn't be too bad a thing for a small fun skirmish game).

      The card play and reactions vastly increase the interest over the same old rolling dice mechanic...

      @@faustbaldhead1390 I swear to god, this was designed by Guild Ball developers/designers. There are SOOOOO many similarities here, it's insane. From the artwork, to influence, to the life bars and effects at certain levels. The card system though is definitely unique, and really, REALLY cool!

    Really great lets play and intro into the amazing Moonstone. I just have a couple of points which i think are not super clear from a quick reading of the rules, and also a couple of things i think you either missed, or didnt use for an intro game.
    1) Flintlock - When you shoot with flintlock (or any other move that is a once per game), you called the bluff, saying that there was no danger as it's a once per game ability (unless you use the reload ability), however it's not that safe - he can reshoot for free if you said bluff and your opponent wasn't lying, as it's part of the same overall action, so gets around the once per game unless reloaded. So in this case if a correct card had been played and he wasn't bluffing he was able to do that ability again, you have to view it as if it's kind of like a ricochet or quick draw skill on the side of flintlock.
    2) When dealing cards - you always deal the active model / attacker ALL their cards before the opponent gets theirs. In the gnome faction there is an ability to alter the decks.
    3) I guess cos you were holding the cam, but you do need to be in base to base with the moonstones to do a harvest action and dig them up.
    4) When you tried to hit the friar, you would have drawn one less card, as the baron was unengaged by anyone other than the attacker and in his melee zone, so you have a simple gang up bonus in the game too
    5) You also didn't do any reaction steps as the opponent, so when the baron walked up to midget, you had a change to spend an energy from midget to do a reaction 1" step, which would have forced the baron to step back in and also spend another energy to melee, as you would have stepped out of his melee. As a note any model on the opponent have a chance to spend 1 energy to do a 1" reaction step, after each completed action of the opponent, but only one model can do a reaction step - it's easy to not bother with in the first few turns, but can be very useful late game.
    6) Also if you are out of your melee range, then you cannot trigger any of the signature move conditions other than the dmg reduction, so you cannot do damager or use the end step effects.

      Don't you also reshuffle and redraw the cards after being called on a bluff or is that another game?

    • @Moonstonegame
      @Moonstonegame 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JTMC93 No, when you get Bluff called against you incorrectly then you get to play again with the cards remaining in your hand.

    • @JTMC93
      @JTMC93 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Moonstonegame I might have been crossing games in my head. A board game a friend of mine was designing has a similar mechanic for magic. I think it is a redraw or add to hand when getting a free cast. IIRC this is because of it using a bidding system. So you play your cards to generate/charge power while your opponent is playing them to reduce your power.

      Its definitely unique, I do wonder if it starts to feel a bit gimicky after a few games though. Being able to read your opponent seems pretty important in very game.

    • @gasa5251
      @gasa5251 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i guess it depends on the players, every hand of cards is different couple with different abilities and desired results, so each combat or arcane is individual. Plus this playthrough didnt highlight the interplay using reaction steps between combatants. It a very very cool game.

    • @anab0lic
      @anab0lic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah idk, I just feel like it might become a bit tiresome having to read/bluff your opponent over and over again.... also some people have an unreadable pokerface, while others you can read like a book lol.... I like to win my skirmish games by outplaying my opponent strategically/tactically and wonder if the bluff mechanic perhaps determines the outcome of things in a way that can negate much of that. I'm willing to give it a try though, its a game I want to like because the art and miniatures etc I'm totally in to.

    • @gasa5251
      @gasa5251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      have a look on their download page, you can get rules and card for a print and play. I agree re the pokerface, but honestly i fell theres a lot more smarts in this game than relying on a dice roll, but you are playing odds as you both are using th same deck and know what cards are in that deck..

      One of the goblins is literally named Vicious Midget and he has a special ability called Midget. If that offends you then you probably want to stay away from this game since the devs clearly don't consider it an offensive term and expecting the people playing the game to not use the official names of their characters is a bit much.

      @xSATSx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@c-r, I take your point about the use of the name midget, I can see that it would be insulting and offensive to little persons, and is something that perhaps should be brought up with the makers of the game (who are currently playtesting some erratas etc so could be a good time for them to consider changing the name).
      I don't think, however, that foomy44's original response to you came across as aggressive or at all 'triggered' - he meant that it's not Guerilla Minis being offensive, it's unfortunately the game itself, and if that is what the designers think/find funny, it's likely there may be other elements of the game you also find offensive, so it may not be a pleasant game for you to play, especially if other players frequently use the character name you find insulting (which they well might, as the character is quite strong). I really like Moonstone, but am concerned its appeal might be damaged by the use of such terms, and I'd like to see it expand and grow as much as possible. The makers are attending a small gaming show local to me soon, and I will mention this issue to them.
