Simon, this was an enjoyable video. The way you talk your way thru the shot, is helpful. "Seeing in black & white" is quite fun. I love shooting B&W, but not every shot works in B&W. A break from color is fun. First time watching, now a subscriber. We'll continue watching "over your shoulder" from Olympic Nat'l Park, Port Angeles, WA., USA!
Thank you so much I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I’m pleased you find my approach helpful as there loads of videos giving advise on composition etc. So happy to have you on board and am looking forward to share more with you. Would love to visit the USA one day, it’s top of my bucket list! 👍👍
Hello, Simon. I can't make a choice. All are strong black-and-white photos for me. What one lacks a bit, you will find in the other. They are really very good. The post-processing is also very strong, everything is well-balanced and not too much. A great piece of photography and post-processing, friend. The second is very good, nice structure and the contrast is perfect. The front is a bit less than the back, but that is because it is painted. It must be said that you had the circumstances on your side, the sky is exceptionally strong in all the photos. The photo of the ship is magnificent, friend. That should be hung on a wall, it is a large format. This is really a gem. It is as I said in the beginning, I can't really make a choice in terms of quality. Sailing has always fascinated me, so that is why I tend to lean towards the photo of the ship. But from a photographic point of view, they are all the same. This is a lesson in delivering high-quality black-and-white photography, Simon. Thanks for this video, mate. Antoine. (from the Netherlands)
Thank you Antoine I really appreciate such a lively comment. I’ve not had chance to get them printed out yet but it will be nice to see them large enough to put on the wall! So glad you enjoyed the film. Hope to share more with you later in the month. 😊👍
Ah summer in Scotland. Net on your head for the midges, gaiters on your legs for the ticks, boiling hot one minute, chucking it down the next... That's why I wait for autumn 😄 Beautiful shots and nice and punchy!
@@DarktableLandscapes haha thank you . Definitely going to make plans to go in Autumn. I went in January this year and the snow, frost and on occasion clear skies made for some amazing shots👍👍
@@SimonJerromes I'm lucky enough to live here and spend the summer drumming my fingers waiting for the foliage to change and snow to hit the tops. Not long now!
@@DarktableLandscapes you are very lucky. I’m fortunate that my work brings me up quite often and when it does it try and spend at least an extra day there and make sure to pack my camera! Am due to bring the kids up camping later this month too. Can’t wait!
Hi, really enjoyed your black and white photographs. I loved the contrasts and the details that show up so well in this medium. I always feel that black and white photography captures the essence, the soul of the subject. Thank you for sharing.
Stunning black and whites. Some really incredible shots in there. Of the boat shots, I think I liked the first one (7:15) the best. Stellar composition and subject. All three are really good, as well as some of the others.
Hi Brian thank you for your comment. Yes I like the first of the boat shots but the curve of the reflection in the second shot I find really appealing which made me rather indecisive about them!!!!. Glad you liked the images in this video thank you 👍👍
Thanks Coby, very kind of you to say. It’s all been a very enjoyable learning curve trying to pull all the little things together that make up a film. Glad you like it 👍👍😊
Thank you Darren really appreciate that. Glad you liked the video. I was pretty lucky the vessel was moored so close to shore and I very nearly didn’t take the shot. Glad I turned around and found a place to ditch the car! 👍
Hi Simon. It's great to see an all black and white video. When I take some shots I always try to change the photos to black and white. Sometimes they work better than the colour ones. Also I like all 3 of the boat shots.
Hi Dennis good to hear from you. Yeah I like abit of black and white. I do have another black and film planned over the next few weeks which I hope will pan out well. Glad you like the Boat shots it was such a beautiful ship just had to add a white vignette to add alittle class haha 😜 👍👍
Simon I really enjoyed the video I wish I had a black and white head to put on like yours all of the shots were stunning, as for the shots of the ship I can’t decide maybe the one framed by the trees but the jury is still out. Thanks again for the video.
Hi Malcolm glad you enjoyed the video, I do enjoy abit of black and white photography every now and then! Yes I’m torn between the ship being framed with the trees but I also like the vessel complimenting the tree too! I also like the shape of the Bow and its reflection!!! Frustrating haha 😜
Hi Simon, just an FYI. You may want to look at your image at 2m 59s. It looks like you've edited with a mask and you've missed some areas. The v-shape between the branches is a different shade than either side of the branch, and some of the edges of the left branch are off too.
@@PaulWilkinson Hi Paul yes I am aware… well spotted…. I didn’t notice it when I first edited the image and it wasn’t until I had included it in the film along with another image that had masking issues and I watched it back on a large screen that I noticed it. By then The video had been published. Haha lessons were learnt and a closer inspection of my masking technique has been implemented! It’s a great learning curve!! Thanks for the comment really appreciate it. 👍
Hi Robin thanks for your comment. Film is something I haven’t shot on for years. It would be great to see your work. I will search using your name above or do you post under a different name?! Thanks
The first image for me. I've been meaning to shoot it for a few years but just never been able to stop. The tall ship is still there but not photogenic from the FW side.
Hi thanks for your comment. It was so nice to see the ship so close to shore. Had to drive up and down a few times to find a safe place to stop! Glad I did though! I will look out for it again next time I’m up! 👍👍
Hi Rohit thank you for your comment. I didnt use any long exposure settings on these images but i always have my camera on a tripod so the exposure settings could be on the slower side and its useful because i did exposure bracket a number of these shots, normally 5 images over a +1/-1 stop of exposure and blended in Lightroom. I only have two 'goto' lenses...24mm GM and a 100-400 GM..although i recently remaber i have a Ziess Battis 16-70 on a vlogging camera i no longer use, but i still forget to take it out and use it!!!
Hi thank you for your comment. Yes the images are alittle contrasty one in particular is a little over cooked shall we say for my taste but I was trying something new. There are a few tweaks I’d like to do to the images where the Lightroom masks aren’t quiet doing their thing and it’s not until you put them up on a big tv you actually notice them. I’m enjoying the learning curve and the constructive comments are helping me a great deal. Thank you 👍👍👍
I quite like the contrast. Many subjects when done in black and white can look flat or even muddy. I find this true in landscape especially. Too many similar colors, mainly greens. Bumping up the contrast keeps it interesting. For me it’s a job well done. 👍
Thank you Bill much appreciated. I try and stay clear of the ‘HDR’ look where possible although I did include an image in that style in the video, and prefer the dodge and burn style. I think maybe because it’s been used since the beginning of time! 👍👍
Hi Greg thanks for the question. I typically start my edit in Lightroom Classic, where I will apply any masks and global edits, then , depending if the image is going to be black and white or colour I will send either to Photoshop or Nix 6 Silver Efex if it’s black and white. The Nix 6 addon gives a slightly better control over the tones of a black and white image. Once I’ve finished there I will send it over to photoshop for dust spot removal and any other little tweaks that maybe necessary before exporting in PNG for use in the film! Hope that helps 😊😊
@@gregscott2330Thanks Greg I thought a white vignette might add a little something to it. There’s a little bit if re-editing to do on some of the masks used particularly on the sky which aren’t apparent until you put them on a massive TV! 😂
Aujourd'hui, la couleur, c'est agréable avec des effets colorés et autre, mais rien ne vaut le noir et blanc pour l'ambiance, c'est bien les nuages, cela meuble le ciel, et accentuent l'effet de la photo.
Hi thanks for your comment. Yes I understand what you mean, there’s one image that’s stands out for me, with the over processed look which was a decision I made in the edit. To be honest I wasn’t sure it was working but I thought I’d stick with! Abit of an experiment. There are a few further adjustments to be made in masking that weren’t apparent on the computer but leap out when you stick them on a big tv!😂 👍👍
Looked like it was a good video but turned it off. The difference in audio levels between the narrative and the music required adjustments each time the change was made.
