There is a warehouse locally I looked at, to buy that has a bathroom with a shower. I thought it would be perfect to drive a motor home inside , and live there. Perfect set up.
@stanleyhape8427 So it's OK for us to work astronomical hours at a warehouse but can't fall asleep there if we own it or rent it?? Bet if I was a newcomer it wouldn't be an issue at all. Anyway, catch me if you can I been living here for two years.
I have a friend that does sound for shows & he lives rent free in a warehouse that stores the equipment. It has electric & water in small bath. No kitchen or living but he can sleep in his van if it’s too hot or too cold. He can’t run their bill up. The rest of the time he’s in the warehouse or making gardens in the land around it. He even built a greenhouse from scraps.
Be aware. He could get kicked to the curb at any time. That’s scary, when he’s obviously bonded with the place. Wish he could buy it for himself permanently.
As a lawyer, your analytical skills have been put to great use in solving your problems. I believe that every problem has a solution if we utilize problem solving skills properly. Also, flex warehouse has an excellent business model for both businesses and individuals. Thanks for sharing.
Buy an acre or 2 in New England. In a town that allows you to have a “trailer “ on your land & put large shed/tiny house conversion. You’ll need a septic & water well . Sometimes you can find property where homes from neglect have been torn down, but the well is dug & septic still usable.
Lovely. My mom has cancer, and has no immunity. When she has to go to the lab and submit urine samples, she gets there very early first thing in the morning, so she’s in and out without being exposed to other patients. Invariably she has to wait for the bathroom because some homeless woman in there using it. Some people need to go when the lab opens to be in and out and get to work on time. Unacceptable for the homeless to occupy medical facility bathrooms.
I am glad that where I live, all the medical facility bathrooms are locked. You have to get a key from the office where you have an appointment. I went to the doctor and encountered a woman on the first floor who was confused to find the bathroom locked. I explained, and she just couldn’t believe it. She was here from North Carolina because her daughter, who is student here, was diagnosed with a serious illness. We have a high homeless population, and it also protects women from being attacked by assailants lurking in the bathroom.
Few know that a truck stop has showers, laundry, 24hr access to restrooms, free cold water/hot water for thermos, and allow overnight parking (despite the signs in auto parking) if you don’t stay parked in the same spot days on end. (I’m a trucker so know this- and many truckers do live out of their trucks full time).
Still cheaper than a motel and provides towels too. Secret is to get a truck driver to give you his/her shower points. I usually had several on my Pilot card I never redeemed each week. I might have to swipe my card for you at the shower, but then it’s all yours, my card won’t reopen it so occupant is safe, and no cost to you-just don’t steal the towels. Driver could get charged for that. 😬 Be safe!
iF your space you rented doesn't have a roll up overhead door you might consider changing over to one when your 3 month lease is up. The reason is that when weather gets bad you can pull your car in out of the heat or extreme low temps. It would also be a more protected space to sleep in your car..

My husband and I once rented office space in Orange County near a huge gym. It had lots of space for both of our computers a small fridge, free parking and a rest room so we rented it. We got a gym membership in a fabulous huge, 24 hr. gym. The back room was big enough for our futon and a cabinet for our clothing that we got at Ikea. That was at least 25. yrs. ago so the rent would probably be quite a bit more. Back then it was $245 a month. We later discovered that nearly all the tenents were sleeping there as well as trying to get a home business going. I began my graphic design/illustration biz there.

I'm not saying this is a solution for you or for anyone for that matter. I just want to share something that I use for running my sewing machine. RYOBI products are sooo overlooked in MY opinion for off grid solutions. I add to my Ryobi battery collection every year but I have the 7" whisper fan which a 4 amp hour battery will run the fan on medium setting for about 12 hours. The 150 watt inverter will charge my laptop/phone/tablet/portable dvd player/Switch AND it will run my SEWING MACHINE and hot glue gun!! The 4 amp hour battery will run my sewing machine for 7 hours straight! I have a portable solar panel that I recharge my batteries with but I use Ryboi daily RIGHT now I have my hot glue gun plugged into the small handheld 150 watt inverter. When I go to craft shows to sell my handmade products I can run my lights or charge my square reader if needed. LOVE LOVE LOVE RYOBI!!!!
Great that works for you!! Really the issue for me with sewing is the space for cutting and the ironing - my little sewing machine doesn’t use a lot of power.
When our family was homeless for a year during the pandemic - we rented an office. It had a bathroom and a fridge. We used a hotplate and went to a hotel once a week for showers. So grateful for the man that helped us illegally.
So, storage units like uhaul and usually others allows you to have things delivered there. I’d just recommend to be on top of it. A “ business” is tax deductible. Smart. Flex warehouse space. Office to meet w/ clients. Conference room. Mini kitchen. Makeshift shower. Likely heat and cooling paid if rental. Thinking OUTSIDE the high property insurance box. Plus, plenty of room to work and create and invent 24/7!
Living in the bay area myself with high costs it is interesting to hear your process of evaluation for your own situation. The flex space sounds so perfect for you! I foresee a change in living situation myself within a year and considering options. Some of those rooms for rent - no cooking/kitchen, barely access to a bath etc. for double what some pay elsewhere for a nice apt, it is astounding. Thanks for the video!
Having dealt with half of the items you listed myself that is an absolutely brilliant idea. Kudos to you for being able to take care of the situation and the added benefit of using their locations across the US. What a win!!
So happy for you! I had never heard of flex warehousing, but it sounds perfect for your needs. The first 20 minutes I was getting antsy, like does a solution exist? Then when I heard 300 sq. ft. that is huge! (more than many tiny houses, yurts, teepees, etc.)
I can't wait to get a freezer and fridge in the car. I save so much money and am healthier bulk cooking and freezing/chilling food, and can't wait to do the same on the road in my car. Yeah the address aspect would be invaluable.
Very helpful information I never knew there was anything like this. Thanks so much, I'll have to research this. Looking forward to hearing how this works out. Thanks
I have considered doing this but have 3 small dogs and 2 cats. Maybe when they get older and pass. Until then, I'll watch and live vicariously through you!
In 1984 while in the military. I couldn't afford an apartment. I rented 12x30 storage unit with 24 hour access, used a pager for messages. Rigged the door so i backed my truck in shut thedoor. Noone knew.
Have you considered the local Library? Ours has rooms set up for audio and video recording. They also allow you to recharge your devices and laptop, have study rooms (if not audio/video recording room) and bonus: it's free 😁 wishing you the best!
I rented a post office box at the USPS. Note: it *is located in a small town,* so this might not be the case everywhere. But the customer service representative said that I can use the USPS street address, and in the 2nd address line, just put the box number. They hold my packages and mail, and it helps for places that do not ship to PO boxes. Again, I'm not sure if all USPS offices do this, but it does not hurt to ask!
Yes I rented a P.O. Box through the post office and used their physical address and listed the unit as the apartment. That system is not working anymore as Buiness are verifying addresses and it’s showing up as the post office
One issue solved....i have never bought online and never will! I grew up used, lived used all my life. I mainly wear upcycled thrift clothing. I now sell a little at native farners market because every one wanted to know where I got my jean bags! I dont buy plastic ever! I reuse small boxes even tissue boxes, tops cut doewn and stapled. My main issue wouid be to sew also if nit in a house. Ive lived in converted office skace before meetjng my current partner with shared bathrooms. Where we live now is where we camped and fished and every town has pay showers at certain gas stations and not a truck stop! My issue would be the laundry! The pay one is terrible here. Expensive because clothes not clean or dry! Have to do 2 or 3 cycles. Used when we camped up the mountains.
Thank you for sharing. My daughter may be interested in trying something like this. She loves the SF Bay Area. She was born and raised there. Now, she lives in the Sacramento Area. She's a widow in her 50s and very independent. I am going to share your video with her and see if she wants to try this in lieu of renting an apartment.
Maybe try airbnb for the summer or tbh extended stay america may be good but they can get expensive. But i find that hotel to be amazing because it’s like a tiny studio apt with a kitchen.
I have so many questions!! what can you NOT do in a warehouse space, and what are these companies to find locations and spaces easily? What should you look for when deciding a space and how much cheaper is it than an apartment? I'm so curious. Please give us some more information if you can as I never knew this could be an option.
For my space, it cannot be "used as a residence" (which I think of as sleeping there) per the lease, and certain things cannot be done there -- welding, woodworking, commercial cooking, etc. Also can't store explosive stuff, so no storage or use of propane.
I have often thought if I was to live out of a car or even a caravan, this is an option I would choose. To buy or private rent a business facility or even a barn, yet I could drive my vehicle straight into and use plus use for extra storage. It makes perfect sense on lots of levels.
Hi Elizabeth Hope you are having a good day today. Have a great weekend. I'm also good with those things everyone likes in the bathroom, so sleeping etc.
Very admirable. You, madam, are wise. I'm sure you've heard that already, More abundance to your business. :) Thank you. I don't even live nor ever stepped in the USA but I finished the entire clip. lol
Check the libraries in your area to see if they have private conference rooms that you can book. It's Free! I had to book a small conf rm for my zoom interview.
you ever seen an old detective tv show from 70s called Vegas? the detective had a warehouse set up like an office with a huge living room and kitchen and everything, drive his car right inside get out and sit on the couch. .. i want to do something like that..... heh, get up from computer desk, walk over get in car, THEN go outside lol... except maybe be able to put an entire rrv in there instead of just a car (which in tv show he could have done)
Hi Elizabeth. I have an Suv and think I can learn to live in it, but am afraid that it may not be such a good idea. Anyway thank you again Elizabeth. Good day...
I know of a recipe creator TH-camr that found a space she rents for shooting her food videos. It’s a beautiful kitchen, set up specifically for photo shoots/filming. It’s a great business model and I hope to see more buildings set up for this. I think it’s very smart that you’re planning on finding commercial space.
You are so awesome! Do you not think that if you upgraded to large Van that could solve your bathroom issue as well as storage and filming ? Really l really enjoyed your content ! I am considering a move from large home to a Van .
As a developer and operator of flex space, your story is hugely valuable. I am sure my family and I will watch your video and take notes multiple times. If you have time to consult please contact me.
Re Denny's: you get a 15% discount if you are an AARP member. Anyone can get an AARP membership. No age restrictions and you don't have to be retired. It's very cheap. Plus other discounts/benefits.
Thanks for sharing some details on this alternative living! What does your family think about this? Are you planning on doing this long-term or just to save money for now or what? I imagine a lawyer’s salary wouldn’t be too bad?
Yep, just rented a storage unit & started hauling my stuff out of this apartment. I had a garage/portable building delivered on some land I own. I was retired but I'm now back to working 7 days a week again (17.5 hrs a week tho). Been here 16/17 years and rent keeps increasing $500/$600/750 & in February, the treat is going up to $1,100. While doing the paperwork, the storage unit manager pointed out that living in storage units is illegal, and that he had to voice this cause more and more people are living in them these days. Cant say I didnt think about it, but what has happened that folks in the US are having to become creative just to have a roof over their heads?
Hey Elizabeth 👋 I just found your channel, and im very glad i did. Ive always wanted to live off grid and seeing your enthusiasm for it makes me want to even more. I love the tree of life necklace too. Can't wait to see what you got coming next.
Hi, first time seeing your channel. before I escaped to Mexico from CA I used to live in the SF East Bay. There is a place you can get mail, packages and have certified mail signed. Nice people there, it's called Private Mailbox and the address is 484 Lake Park Ave, right near the Grand Lake Theater. I really feel for those who are still stuck in California. It is not sustainable to live there at all. You have great energy, keep going! I highly recommend Mexico as a place to live. Where I am the weather is even better than in California, It is never too hot or too cold and if you have an adobe home like me there is no need for AC because it stays cool all day inside, even when it is 90+ degrees outside.
Elizabeth, Interesting idea. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like setting up home in a more affordable setting🤷🏼♀️ Wherever your adventure takes you, best wishes🫶🏼
There is obviously restrictions, but you can store some food in storage. Think cans and canned drinks etc. as long as it's sealed. Watching the things you would like to buy in bulk I think you can and keep it in the storage. Toilet paper 🧻, paper towels 🧻, tissues, and I think the granola bars would be fine if the storage is climate controlled.
I just stumbled upon your channel. And I'm curious since you're a lawyer and you have a profitable TH-cam channel other than this one. Why you're living in your car?
Regarding filming/office space, have you checked into your local libraries and community colleges? Our’s here have conference/media rooms you can use, sometimes for free.
Public libraries have information, bathrooms, resource/support directories as well as free WI-FI. Some hotels have "day rates" that give you access to bathroom needs up to 4/5 hours a day. Which churches in your community are open during the day?
Thank you for sharing this very helpful info! Great solution. How much do you pay for the flex space month to month? Or what is the price range for the size you rent? Appreciate it...
@@elizabethoffgrid I’m in north east Wisconsin, Door County area. You don’t want to be in Door County-high taxes. Some of those rooms for rent - no cooking/kitchen, barely access to a bath etc. for double what some pay elsewhere for a nice apt, it is astounding. Thanks for the video!
Right the rooms for rent are bizarre!!
Oh, now I need to look into that. It sounds affordable and very accommodating. Thumbs up for content and love from, S. California.
Welcome!
I live in a van and rent a little sewing studio to work and store extra stuff. I can also charge there.
Sounds great! I know of art studio places around here that rent little cubbies for people to do their art
Having dealt with half of the items you listed myself that is an absolutely brilliant idea. Kudos to you for being able to take care of the situation and the added benefit of using their locations across the US. What a win!!
Thanks!
So happy for you! I had never heard of flex warehousing, but it sounds perfect for your needs. The first 20 minutes I was getting antsy, like does a solution exist? Then when I heard 300 sq. ft. that is huge! (more than many tiny houses, yurts, teepees, etc.)
Thanks!
I can't wait to get a freezer and fridge in the car. I save so much money and am healthier bulk cooking and freezing/chilling food, and can't wait to do the same on the road in my car. Yeah the address aspect would be invaluable.
Yes exactly, bulk cooking will be great. I plan to get a rice cooker and maybe even a pressure cooker (combo) for bulk cooking!
Very helpful information I never knew there was anything like this. Thanks so much, I'll have to research this. Looking forward to hearing how this works out. Thanks
Yep I did not hear of this either until recently!
Congratulations on the acquisition of your new rental space! Sounds great.
Thanks so much!
Wait, are you a lawyer or paralegal?? I am planning to live in a van for the rest of my life. I admire you!! You sew!! Awesome
I"m a lawyer!
Truck stops always have great bathrooms (have showers for a fee too) and they are everywhere and open 24/7.
Yep truck stops and rest stops are great when traveling
What a great video! Thanks!
I have considered doing this but have 3 small dogs and 2 cats. Maybe when they get older and pass. Until then, I'll watch and live vicariously through you!
Yep the warehouse would not work for pets -- they don't allow them here at all!
Awesome!! I’d love this alternative!
In 1984 while in the military. I couldn't afford an apartment. I rented 12x30 storage unit with 24 hour access, used a pager for messages. Rigged the door so i backed my truck in shut thedoor. Noone knew.
Now they do with all the cameras.✅
Have you considered the local Library? Ours has rooms set up for audio and video recording. They also allow you to recharge your devices and laptop, have study rooms (if not audio/video recording room) and bonus: it's free 😁 wishing you the best!
Yep I love the library
I rented a post office box at the USPS. Note: it *is located in a small town,* so this might not be the case everywhere. But the customer service representative said that I can use the USPS street address, and in the 2nd address line, just put the box number. They hold my packages and mail, and it helps for places that do not ship to PO boxes. Again, I'm not sure if all USPS offices do this, but it does not hurt to ask!
Yes I rented a P.O. Box through the post office and used their physical address and listed the unit as the apartment. That system is not working anymore as Buiness are verifying addresses and it’s showing up as the post office
I think it depends on the post office, but yeah it does not work for every business address need (like for government filings)
Vancity Vanlife bought a garage with electricity and a bathroom to park his van in and work on his van as well.
Thanks for sharing!
where did he park it?
Chrome Valdez is his name, and his shop is on Vancouver Island, BC. He has a business he is building/running out of his new shop.
I love the idea of a warehouse space to rent:) think that movie BIG, grew up watching that movie several times. Loved the apartment in New York
Thanks, hope it is helpful!
McDonalds is my go to early morning bathroom spot.
The ones around here have a code so I only do that if I’m actually buying mcd breakfast :)
@@nisagomez4366 too many people. U better off brushing and washing u face at the park.
Not a very good idea. Managers are very mean about that. U need park restroom.
Maybe try airbnb for the summer or tbh extended stay america may be good but they can get expensive. But i find that hotel to be amazing because it’s like a tiny studio apt with a kitchen.
I think that could work well in certain situations, yep
Air BNB, hard no. Same as VRBO.
Fascinating, thank you.
I didn't even watch the video yet and I say" heck yeah". I'm always looking at different spaces that can be turned to a residence.
I have often thought if I was to live out of a car or even a caravan, this is an option I would choose. To buy or private rent a business facility or even a barn, yet I could drive my vehicle straight into and use plus use for extra storage. It makes perfect sense on lots of levels.
Good job finding something to fit your own needs! Personally, I could never do what you’re doing. Maybe if I had a campervan…
Thanks!
Hi Elizabeth
Hope you are having a good day today. Have a great weekend. I'm also good with those things everyone likes in the bathroom, so sleeping etc.
You too!
Thank you❤❤❤
Very admirable. You, madam, are wise. I'm sure you've heard that already, More abundance to your business. :) Thank you. I don't even live nor ever stepped in the USA but I finished the entire clip. lol
Thank you!
It's funny/cute, you often say "then I have to deal with 'people '." 😊 I hear ya.
~🦋
Thanks!
Thank you!
I would leave that state. 😊
Check the libraries in your area to see if they have private conference rooms that you can book. It's Free! I had to book a small conf rm for my zoom interview.
Yep the ones around here do have meeting rooms that one can reserve with a library card
you ever seen an old detective tv show from 70s called Vegas? the detective had a warehouse set up like an office with a huge living room and kitchen and everything, drive his car right inside get out and sit on the couch. .. i want to do something like that..... heh, get up from computer desk, walk over get in car, THEN go outside lol... except maybe be able to put an entire rrv in there instead of just a car (which in tv show he could have done)
I thought I recognized you and your voice from your other channel. It has been a great resource.
Cool to see you here!
Wouldn't it be better to simply buy land and place maybe a shed there that you could convert to a living and work space? Stay safe.
Maybe I’ll do that someday but for now I want to be in town. Also that’s a lot of cash up front vs renting.
I love the concept. By the way, Denny’s is my fave diner lol
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for your post; it's interesting to me because I currently reside in section 8 housing and am paranoid that these programs are not nec permanent and may go away for any number of reasons. I have an Suv and think I can learn to live in it, but am afraid that it may not be such a good idea. Anyway thank you again Elizabeth. Good day...
Yes, always good to have a back-up plan!!
Thank you!
Welcome!
That sounds great and makes sense!
You are so awesome! Do you not think that if you upgraded to large Van that could solve your bathroom issue as well as storage and filming ? Really l really enjoyed your content ! I am considering a move from large home to a Van .
Ah but it introduces other problems like gas costs and lack of being stealth -- I talk about my reasons here: th-cam.com/video/lOCqqo3d6TI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for sharing!
Denny's....yeah,every time I go there , I regret it for price & etc
Thanks, sounds like a great solution for you 💖💖💖
Thanks!
You could get a big toaster oven that bakes and broils food
And a 2 burner plug in to cook on
Yep I have an airfryer -- but I can't use burners in here, no open flames allowed
Thanks for sharing some details on this alternative living! What does your family think about this? Are you planning on doing this long-term or just to save money for now or what? I imagine a lawyer’s salary wouldn’t be too bad?
I did a playlist on my why's! --> th-cam.com/play/PLbqUMuwW3j-PQdKgHJ6Htwzd3etFK53W3.html
Hello, I am here to support you and your channel ✌️🌻
Thanks and welcome!
Awesome ideas new sub
Welcome aboard!
@@elizabethoffgrid Thank you very much! I would love to talk to you about off grid living and just chat if you ever get time.
If I ever have to move into my car, these are all the thought processes I would go through - and in part already have - just in case!
If you have many big boxes, dump them at walmart, hmdepot or target. They'll have recycle dumpsters by their bldgs..
Hello 👋 I'm a new subscriber from Atlanta Ga thanks for sharing your adventures
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining!
Yes I know people who are loving living in Mexico!
If you are near a major hospital or airport even, put on ur hazards and use their bathrms during late nights
That would not work around here (they'd tow you fast) but I could see that working in some places
Elizabeth,
Interesting idea.
Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like setting up home in a more affordable setting🤷🏼♀️
Wherever your adventure takes you, best wishes🫶🏼
Thank you!
Hey!;I missed you! I hurried and got here,😊
Welcome back!
Love this info! And glad you are looking forward to ice cream sanwiches. :) Curious if you would be willing to share how to find warehouse space?
Try www.loopnet.com/ and also just google "flex warehouse space near me"
I'm actually at a Loss for Words 😮.
you're safe, you're fed... so, that's just another way to live... it's hard to have family get togethers in a car....lol
If I want to get together with family, I just meet them at their house/apartment or another location
Depends on the place of course, but the one I was at did not allow any food, including canned goods.
I did the same two decades ago but I fully slept in the warehouse, got me all the way fcked up if they thought I wouldn’t 🤷🏼♂️
Glad it worked for you!
Would love to get a update to see how its going 💜
you can check out the patreon (there's a free level) for more info about it www.patreon.com/elizabethoffgrid
I just stumbled upon your channel. And I'm curious since you're a lawyer and you have a profitable TH-cam channel other than this one. Why you're living in your car?
I have a playlist on that: Why I Do This

Regarding filming/office space, have you checked into your local libraries and community colleges? Our’s here have conference/media rooms you can use, sometimes for free.
Yep I love the library, but it does not work well for my filming
Hi! If I would live in a campervan instead of a car . it would be more comfortable . I like my apartment better.
Public libraries have information, bathrooms, resource/support directories as well as free WI-FI. Some hotels have "day rates" that give you access to bathroom needs up to 4/5 hours a day. Which churches in your community are open during the day?
Yep libraries are a great resource!
aUnfortunately, the majority of such “warehouse” rentals here are zoned commercial and both landlords & city codes refuse to allow human habitation.
Yep I don’t live in mine - I work in it and use it during the day.
Thank you for sharing this very helpful info! Great solution. How much do you pay for the flex space month to month? Or what is the price range for the size you rent? Appreciate it...
It obviously depends on location and size - mine is about 300 sq feet and is about $750/month, in the SF Bay Area
@@elizabethoffgrid Thank you for the reply and info. IMO, that's very reasonable for all the "checks in the blocks" it fulfills
Wisconsin for cool summers. Middle or northern.
That's a good point, I've also thought of mid/north Minnesota and Michigan -- I wonder though about mosquitos and biting flies
@@elizabethoffgrid I’m in north east Wisconsin, Door County area. You don’t want to be in Door County-high taxes. But the area is beautiful and mosquitoes aren’t a problem unless you go trekking around out in the woods. Farther up north Wisconsin-yes, more mosquitoes and ticks in the long grass. Depends if you live in town or out in the country. Summer, fall and spring is lovely though. Rich people here go to Florida in the winter, lol.
Hey Elizabeth. Good detail and excellent solution for your multi tasking sources of income and lifestyle. Looking forward to more...
Thanks for stopping by!
What is the legal channel? I’d like to follow.
Thanks, here you go: th-cam.com/users/elizabethpw
Miss, that is a great idea,I considered that for my t.trailer living but thought I would have to rent in a not so upscale place because of the monthly rent.
What have you seen in your research? Thx
I’m in a place that’s a couple warehouses right next to apartments. I think they are turning the zoning into residential but slowly, so the area is quiet and nice.
