I remember one time when I and a couple other players followed SUOMI around in the woods protecting him from goblins while he leveled his Firemaking. Afterwards we formed a (very minor) clan, The Noble Society of Goblinslayers, headquartered in Rimmington, patrolling the woods between Rimmington and Port Sarim and keeping the area clear of goblins by killing every goblin we could find. The idea that the ruthlessness of the first year of RuneScape lead to clans forming out of a necessity for order, and that the Wilderness removed the necessity of self-policing players, is a compelling story. But if you look at PK worlds and Deadman mode, you see that there's more to it than that. Today it's easier than ever to connect with people, and organize groups for things, but we're also a much larger community now, so it's much harder to have a widely known and organized clan. In that first year, everybody probably knew the sabres, because they were a significant part of the player base, and with only three worlds it would be hard to not notice them. These days even the largest clans are less than 1% of the full community, so they can't have nearly the same impact. If the Wilderness hadn't killed the clan dynamic (or at least changed it significantly), then the growth of the community inevitably would have.

Pking, getting "bsed", level 1-2 varrock clan wars, edgeville castle when your squad was strong enough.. I started / ran one of the largest pk groups (level 10-17) Ahhhh the good ol days ❤
Another fact about the 3 hit combat days. You could catch someone if they ran by moving diaganol at the right time. Even without having run. It was basically the pre cursor to run and possibly why they added it
0:16 I find it hilarious that if you had an encyclopedic knowledge of the timeframe and how to cause certain glitches in runescape, you could effectively make millions of dollars (in real life) from collecting and selling certain rares at crucial points in history if you were somehow transported back 30 years. Yeah you could buy bitcoin and invest in apple or whatever, but knowing you could become a millionaire, doing WHAT YOU WERE GONNA DO ANYWAY; PLAY RUNESCAPE! is hilarious.
Holy crap this was a cool video. I started playing just after the first Christmas Event. Granted I was a dumb kid in Middle School but man I had no idea there was this much PK and Clan activity back in the day. I don't think I was killed more than once or twice and didn't actually lose anything.
I played runescape from the beginning. Before the membership came into play. My fondest memory of classic is having Bluerose13x make a rune 2 hander for me, took me ages to get the money for the rune bars! I'd like to say I really enjoyed this video and I don't think people realise the amount of research you had to put in to make something of this quality. I often look up old runescape stuff myself due to nostalgia and it can be very hard to find information sometimes. I was in the Gladiators and when runescape 2 came out I was briefly in Damage Inc, but had personal issues with a member called Bible boy and left. Thanks again man, really liked the video!
Its impressive how you found all the information for this. Considering that these clans were probably populated with kids and TH-cam didn't exist yet, there probably weren't a lot of people recording these events.
Thank you! Yeah this was way harder to research compared to some of my other videos. Luckily The Wayback Machine preserved some of the more popular sites from that era :)
I was 14 at the time. And can attest to this.. 0 recordings lol I DO HAVE A TON OF OLD PICS THOUGH.. of me.. blaze.. ashley, ladykilljoy, lightning, Sir.. and few others... Miss it.. bc we all actually grew close in THAT rs.
I saw the thumbnail and was instantly reminded of the old geocities sites made to scam new players in RSC. One of them advertised they could get you the rare Jade Armor and used a very well edited screenshot of a player in full armor with the armor being recolored emerald green.
I remember the time clan wars and all that made a comeback in the late 2000s before RuneScape switched over to EOC. People actually used to go do clan wars and all the different game modes
Great to see this. I cant tell you how many thousands of hours i put into this og / classic runescape. A lot of it had to do with the times we were living in. The internet was in the stage of onboarding / mass adoption and it was one of the first ways to truly communicate and network with people from all across the world. I started in 1998 and will be forever thankful for those memories ❤
We almost got a taste of the old anti-RPK with PvP worlds. Some players, like myself would hop to a PvP world for less competition while skilling. I ended up protecting some lower level players while mining. A pker a few levels higher than me tried to pull the misclick game on me one too many times, but I had my sword and armor hidden in inventory and a few lobsters (you wouldn't expect that from someone mining) and I chased him away.
Ngl that sounds fucking awesome Imagine being in an actual war with another clan, the outcome of which has actual significant ramifications on the game. Imagine bounties, bounty hunting and being a hero of justice who protects noobs from PKers
Such a trip back in time, so crazy to remember how it used to be. Glad to watch a nice recap of it though, damn near 30 and still remember the bad times in classic.
I sometimes, although rarely watch these short documentaries of RS on TH-cam and you never disappoint. Thanks for reminding us who did play back then as my own memories have begun to fade and I only remember some conversations and key moments of play. Glad to have been part of those days however shitty my internet connection was and having only little time to play. I still have my original prayer beast Vorpal Sabre. :)
I’m 34 made my character at 13 and yea I distinctly remember having to pick a class (Wizard) which was integral to my class identity for much of my early play. I don’t remember the PvP outside Lumbridge though - I think I must not have picked the option to do so and I remember the wilderness was created not long after I joined. Cool burst of nostalgia for me, thanks 😊
I wish classic servers were still up... idk what it is but those graphics and just everything was cool to me. The 3 hit combat system was actually amazing.
You still can, Openrsc/rscvet. It's a team of people that have worked for 5 years to restore the game, the classic version, and there's even a 2001 version on there, which is amazing.. So many hours have been put into this, reading old archived websites and forums, trying to recreate 2001 version. Such an amazing feat.. Open rsc is what was used for this video. Atleast a lot of the footage is from there 😄

This is so interesting! I started playing late 2001 and knew about the Saber clan, but had no idea about the lore behind it. I just knew them for giving adamantite long swords to players who joined them.
The three rounds of combat is where the term 3 hit comes from too. You’d want to 3 hit whoever you wanted to pk so they couldn’t leave combat and eat food or pots. You would ideally want to get 2 or 3 bolt hits then attack with a R2h. 1 defence accounts were so much fun. Low level mage accounts with 44 magic but other base stats at 1 were the biggest money makers. Most accounts were 15-20 hit points and so easy to kill. Ah man. The good old days
Thanks for the flashback! Man I miss these days! Being able to 3 hit people was awesome. My first ever pk was in varrock general store lol. I was hooked on pking after that. The clan wars were great. I was 23 when I started playing. I literally had kids crying because I pked them and they lost all of their stuff lol. A lot of the time I'd feel bad and give it back. Anywho, thanks for the video! Brought back a lot of good memories!
4:10 somehow I seem to remember that it was the first 3 items in your inv that you kept, not the most valuable ones. I could also be remembering wrong, it’s been over 20 years lmao
I remember finding this game on a MUD website, where it was listed as a “Graphical MUD”. RuneScape and Tibia and others were basically just free to play clones of Ultima Online back then
That website was absolutely right: those early MMOs were - in terms of mechanics - indistinguishable from just slightly fancier graphical shells for MUDs, as anyone who has played MUDs will tell you. Personally, I'd play something like that today if it was available (OSRS et all are just too time intensive and grindy for me) and would happily settle for traditional MUDs if they were still alive.
@@mmocracy Active is relative, I suppose. The ones I've tried the last time, although it was many years ago, didn't grab me - the ones with the cool setting and mechanics weren't active, and the ones with more players were meh and seemed to not care about the new player experience. But that's just an impression, I'd be happy to be wrong.
2:06 I will say as devils' advocate, that I often switched between Runescape and Tibia (they were the two powerhouses at the time -- runescape had more players but tibia had more permanence. If you dropped an item in runescape, it disappeared in 30 seconds. If you dropped an item in Tibia under a tree in an obscure area (game was 2.5d, so you could "hide" a bag under a tree by throwing it under the tile covered by the trees' leaves) , you could quit the game and come back 6 months later and unless the area had an update that physically changed the world in some way or someone had come by and found your bag, it would still be there. Totally different vibes.. but back in those days in like year 2000, we mostly referred to people who murdered others' unjustly as PKs as well. It wasn't runescape that coined the term. It probably wasn't even tibia, but since like runescape, it was also a "pvp enabled everywhere and you drop your entire bag but only 1 piece of equipment (10% chance) and lose 10% experience in level and all skills" type of game, pks were basically murderers. You could start off friday night at level 45 and hunt for 25+ hours and then die on sunday night and end up being level 44. There were so many times I'd quit both tibia and runescape, but I'd just get sucked back in eventually. Sometimes after a day. lol
thanks for posting so much recently! your videos are always refreshing for the community, it reminds us of exactly what we have already gone thru in this community. and yes alot of it is terrifying
I feel like this would have been fun. I honestly agree that the change from pvp everywhere vs designated pvp zones probably ruined it for a lot of people. The idea of being a literal knight in shining armor to a new player seems like one of the only reasons to form a clan at all.
The option to choose whether or not you can PK is kinda rad. I feel like it could work if the option wasn't permanent but maybe had a cool down. If you chose to PK you have it for at least 24 hours then you can change again or something
I started playing in March of 2002. RSC will forever be my favorite. I played until they eventually shut it down for good. The 3 round combat system was the best. Being able to duel anywhere was amazing. And the fact that it was SUPER hard to max, made things even better.. I still play OSRS to this day under one of the main accounts I started on RSC. These videos are super nostalgic. Thank you.
I remember my first time seeing RS at my friends house one new years night. We got off of GTA 3 to play it. I watched him wait till the clock struck 12 and thousands of party hats dropped. He picked like 2 up or something. Years later I didnt realize hoe huge that moment was. They make MMOs to safe now.
I played runescape in the early 2000s when it first came out. I remember seeing Zezima and The Old Nite in the level 20 - 40 range. I was also playing when holloween mask, party hats, and santa hats dropped. It seemed every holiday something stupid would drop, so even though I had like 20 party hats at one point. I ended up dropping them all, basically throwing them away to be deleted lol
Been watching these videos, me and my friends played back in these days, and considering how much we played back then in 2001-2003: having second accounts with PK in the name, literally crying to my mother losing my gear after getting ambushed (seeing magic from off screen while mining in wilderness was terrifying!!), being affiliated with the Messiahs, the wilderness, Rune equipment coming out being a game changer (and then dragon being a joke), and waiting for the Kandarin update. My personal achievement was being in the top 500 mining, but I never stuck around until Runescape 2 and eventually lost my login info. Back then, there was no good account recovery system if you forgot a password. It was just a drop in the bucket of all the history afterward, and I have no context for anything after this! So fascinating
Im 38 years old, i was 17 when i first started playing runescape in 2002, I remember everything (probably because i was a grown teen while it was happening), there was s lot of stuff from back then that people just don't know about and the people making video's were too young to remember.
I was in the Wanderers clan back then, there's some artwork saved somewhere from our clan of the whole clan drawn together. I then left Wanderers as it was during the time where most old clans became dead and joined another clan called The Rainbow clan (Yeah, another the.) which was also an anti pk clan.
The term PKing likely came from Ultima Online in MMO terms. Runescape drew a LOT of influence from it. Though before that the first usage of it i know of, and likely where it came to be used in UO from, is MUDs. Genocide being the first i can remember that used that term and to focus on it. Another source of huge influence to Runescape? MUDs! PvP was a term also used as far back as the 80s and is obviously the one that stuck. I'm not sure anyone knows the first to use it, but the term was coined in bulletin board MUDs of the time.
I was 12 years old in 07 when i made my first account.crazy that classic players are all well over 30 years old now.i wish i could have played back when players had pretty much 100% control of the gameplay.classic clans sound like so much fun.that would have been something to behold
I love actually seeing stuff from this era. I experienced it and played it back then, but I was a young kid back then so whilst I remember a surprising amount of it, but it's different seeing it.
Back in the day there was x3 r2h in the game. But no one had the crafting level to smith them. It would be great if you could shed light on this in an episode!
THIS! People don’t understand that RuneScape REVOLVED around pking.. That’s why this new shit pisses me off - Yeah things need to evolve and grow but killing off what the game is MADE from! Even in the early 2000s outside of classic, check hiei the pk’s videos out.. Dragon weapons just came out.. Barrows items (especially dharoks) cost upwards of 30m for a set.. The game WAS about getting good gear and meeting up in edgeville before the wildy line was even around and chatting and asking people to fight.. THAT’S what people need to understand.. They shouldn’t let people vote to PK/PVP updates unless they have a certain amount of kills (KDR) under their fucking belt.. Bring back THE REAL RuneScape
I’ll be eligible for my 20 year cape here in the next few years! I created my first account when I was 8. They’re going to have to make a 30 year cape soon. I didn’t play during these times obviously, but I’m sure I would’ve!
Kinda cool that enormous scale allied pking and anti-pking wars, as well as bounties created by players made a comeback on RS3 with Wilderness warbands. Same with land claims RP, although those were fought in Clan Wars rather than wildy.
It depends on the video, but this one was mostly sourced from backup copies of RuneScape fansites sent to me by community members who were around back then. :)
Not sure if you did this on purpose but Ore Sabre was actually a player, she was really nice and was one of the smiths for the Sabre clan. She kept playing Classic well after the time it was discontinued, as well.
Shout to the RSCAngel, RSCEmulation, and RSCRevolution Private server players. I had a party hat when they were 30k, sold it super early, way before they had any value.
I wish clans were like that now, i love pvp clan politics in open world games, i remember when rs was like that, it sort of came back in a weird way when they released wildy worlds, but it died down fast and just turned into what it is today with all the tick manipulation stuff
I quite literally started The Dark Syndicate. I had a character named Gabriel Diaz, and one day he rescued a wizard from a black knight(I was a black knight aswell) named Tetrak. A partnership and bond formed and soon we had started our own little organization of dudes. I left and I found Tetrak had way outleveled me by the time I got back and I believe I eventually turned the reigns over to him. The Game became a LOT less interesting when The Wilderness happened.
I still remember when Draynor was THE dueling spot for level 60+ and under 60 was Lumbridge. Personally my favorite time of Runescape seeing 1000+ players crammed into Draynor. All of the sudden a duel would break out of 100m (which is equivalent to 1k usd back then, the economy wasnt fucked like rs2/rs3 is now) and it was so exciting watching everyone crowd around cheering on who would win. That little 3 second timer is what made pking/dueling in rsc so much better. Even tho I play OSRS now (rs2), it's only because Jagex was butthurt people still played rsc and shut it down lol.
There was just 1 world when it started for everyone, that was until the 1,000 player celebration black out which caused Andrew to buy a second. I remember the Messiah clan, I was asked to join but you had to change your name to 'Messiah ____' to join. Cyber wars was a beautiful game. But it sucked when everyone's account got wiped.

I was an OG member of Gladz and I’ve came over to RuneScape from playing shit games on games domain. One of my main accounts is from 2001 and I have 5 others from 02-03 a couple which were magic defense pures. I used to love 3 hitting lvl 123s like they were nothing
I remember I started watching your videos back in 2015. I was just getting into OSRS. You and Mote Plox really showed me how amazing this games history is and also how amazing this games community. I can't wait to see the future of this channel :)
Thank you!! Crazy to think its been that long since I started making videos haha
@@ColonelloRS really is crazy haha. I started a podcast and have been interviewing some of my idols on TH-cam. Would you mind being on it. Would just take 30 mins of your time. Already done with the first interview :)
damn I miss runescape classic. made my first account in 2001. varrok and edge lvl 1 pking will always be some of the best rs memories
Man said pking back in MY day
haha damn right@@SlottoZex-uz5ox
Pking, getting "bsed", level 1-2 varrock clan wars, edgeville castle when your squad was strong enough.. I started / ran one of the largest pk groups (level 10-17)
Ahhhh the good ol days ❤
@@jonb8431 hell yeah man, great times!
Level 40s with 40 attack 62 strength and 1 def. The rich guys always had 1 prayer so they had more strength because of no need for protect item
1:23 Lumbridge, like the 80s, you HAD to be there.
Another fact about the 3 hit combat days. You could catch someone if they ran by moving diaganol at the right time. Even without having run. It was basically the pre cursor to run and possibly why they added it
Runescape was running on Honduran prison rules back then.
I also got my first r2h from Bluerose, traded 4 santa hats for it
Its impressive how you found all the information for this.
There's a popular rs classic private server. Guess who I saw in their discord doing research for this video? :)
The idea of non pk players supplying the army with food, is an awesome concept
Ngl that sounds fucking awesome
Imagine being in an actual war with another clan, the outcome of which has actual significant ramifications on the game.
How did u first hear about the game?
I wish classic servers were still up... idk what it is but those graphics and just everything was cool to me. The 3 hit combat system was actually amazing.
Agreed, everything looks so vibrant compared to RuneScape 2
You still can, Openrsc/rscvet. It's a team of people that have worked for 5 years to restore the game, the classic version, and there's even a 2001 version on there, which is amazing.. So many hours have been put into this, reading old archived websites and forums, trying to recreate 2001 version. Such an amazing feat.. Open rsc is what was used for this video. Atleast a lot of the footage is from there 😄
Yup
With a few changes
I think they did a poll recently if they should bring it back, unless I was dreaming
@@ErinMar What to bring classic back? 🤣
Amazing video, glad to see the return of your iconic OSRS character
Gz on 100k, always great content bro!
Thank you!
Where does one find these alternate runescape tracks? Your editor is a god 😭
The peak of Runescape Classic was the best. I started in 2002 or 2003, it was so fun. So many great memories.
the guards actually guarding players sounds like a pretty cool concept
I try explaining this to people and it was absolute chaos but so much fun. Thanks for the memory :)
How did you get all this footage I wonder? Are there private servers for RS classic?
so many

the code is out there if you want to run your own server. a lot of the footage he used was actually from staking, not pking
Is the bear at 11:18 supposed to be the stuffed bear in the Varrock Museum? iirc back in the day it was stationary and didn't move at all.
This is so interesting! I started playing late 2001 and knew about the Saber clan, but had no idea about the lore behind it. I just knew them for giving adamantite long swords to players who joined them.
You just nostalgia bombed me. I forgot all about that.
I started with Oldschool during 07. Good times! Glad i missed out on the crazy years tbh lol.
3 Hit U
So many pures running around wilderness 2 shotting people, it was fun while it lasted lol. Everyone hunting for each other's R2Hs.
@@RiggedandReadyhe's got a couple vids on TH-cam he's legendary
Thanks for the flashback! Man I miss these days! Being able to 3 hit people was awesome. My first ever pk was in varrock general store lol. I was hooked on pking after that. The clan wars were great. I was 23 when I started playing. I literally had kids crying because I pked them and they lost all of their stuff lol. A lot of the time I'd feel bad and give it back. Anywho, thanks for the video! Brought back a lot of good memories!
you are living proof that my dad was wrong about gamers appearing out of nowhere after I was born.
One of your best latest videos man. History, drama, cool visuals, and more. Love it.
Thank you!! I really appreciate that
4:10 somehow I seem to remember that it was the first 3 items in your inv that you kept, not the most valuable ones.
@@paulie-g there are plenty of MUDs that have active player bases even today
Sometimes after a day. lol
10:46 I guess you could say... the museum had some history.
thanks for posting so much recently! your videos are always refreshing for the community, it reminds us of exactly what we have already gone thru in this community. and yes alot of it is terrifying
after all these years i still love the "oh dear, you are dead" so british!
I feel like this would have been fun. I honestly agree that the change from pvp everywhere vs designated pvp zones probably ruined it for a lot of people. The idea of being a literal knight in shining armor to a new player seems like one of the only reasons to form a clan at all.
Its why i quit.. + i got hacked in 01 LOL. Cried as a 14 yr old as I lost my full mithril.
ALMOST 100K SUBS!!!!!! WELL DESERVED 💯💯💯💯
Thank you!! 🎉
Ancient runescape military history goes hard. You are the Herodotos of runescape.
The look and feel of this reminds me of realm of the mad god when it first came out
I was 12 years old in 07 when i made my first account.crazy that classic players are all well over 30 years old now.i wish i could have played back when players had pretty much 100% control of the gameplay.classic clans sound like so much fun.that would have been something to behold
I think you just unlocked a core memory with castle gamesdomain
I love watching your videos! Genuinely one of my favorite things to do while I'm doing my own grinding on osrs. Keep it up!
Thank you! Good luck on the grind :D
I'm a big PKer, it's cool seeing the Classic clan action
I love actually seeing stuff from this era. I experienced it and played it back then, but I was a young kid back then so whilst I remember a surprising amount of it, but it's different seeing it.
100k !!!!!! You deserve this man!!
Back in the day there was x3 r2h in the game. But no one had the crafting level to smith them. It would be great if you could shed light on this in an episode!
Man, I remember playing back when the game looked like this and watching this takes me back
All these screen caps are giving me a nostalgia trip
100k subs lets go! def one of my fav runescape channels for sure
Thank you!! So excited, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would get to 100k haha
@@ColonelloRS of course congrats! love to see the channel grow and every video seems to get better and better

Classic is a glorious horrendous mess but that's why we love it so much
I’ll be eligible for my 20 year cape here in the next few years! I created my first account when I was 8. They’re going to have to make a 30 year cape soon. I didn’t play during these times obviously, but I’m sure I would’ve!
That's awesome! Its amazing that the game has been around this long
Did it actually run at 50fps or was that clip from the "rs classic" thing?
Kinda cool that enormous scale allied pking and anti-pking wars, as well as bounties created by players made a comeback on RS3 with Wilderness warbands. Same with land claims RP, although those were fought in Clan Wars rather than wildy.
You make great videos man, I love taking a trip down memory lane, and a lot of your stuff even predates my early days on RuneScape
Glad you like them! :)
This video has better History and Lore than actual Jagex produced stories. I loved it! :D

I love your videos man
It depends on the video, but this one was mostly sourced from backup copies of RuneScape fansites sent to me by community members who were around back then.

Congrats on the 100K!! You deserve it! :D
Thank you so much!! :D
Wilderness was released on August 13th 2001. I discovered Runescape about 10 days later. I had no idea all this had happened until now. It was wild!!!
I was in the Gladiators. Shouts to Jericho
gosh the memories, i played back in 2001 and still do sometimes. Miss rs classic so much! ty for the video
Crazy that you only found this video after so much time too. I only saw your comment by sorting by new
Thanks for adding to RuneScape history!
Props for giving Ore Sabre the sneaky mention, The actual mother of King Sabre
I had a good two years of playing true RuneScape classic, 2002-RS2 release.
Great video colonello! I especially loved the ending! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
If anyone ever tells you the game is going to end soon, just remember this video. People have literally been calling it "death of RS" since year one.
Even tho I play OSRS now (rs2), it's only because Jagex was butthurt people still played rsc and shut it down lol.
bro you have the coolest osrs content on youtube, your videos are awesomely well done and super interesting
They should release a version of classic, that would be amazing.
They did, but it shut down
I started playing on classic before rs2 and I quit playing before the grand exchange. These videos are very nostalgic
Oh how i miss this version of the game clanning was on another level back then
