I adore how Sonic doesn't say "the pain will go away eventually" because that just isn't true and to put that expectation onto other people makes people feel broken when they're still hurting. Instead he says that love is more powerful than pain. And that is a surprisingly mature message
To think that such a simple lesson as “You never get rid of pain, you just become more powerful than it through love” took me +20 years to learn and yet this movie shows it to kids (and adults alike) in a very fun, lighthearted and cool language is something I will never appreciate enough. AND IT’S FROM A SONIC MOVIE OF ALL THINGS.
Mufasa unintentionally has the lesson that you should hold onto grudges, while Sonic 3 explicitly says that you should not hold onto your grudges and grief.
I mean, doesn't Mufasa also show the origin of the *villain* who held that grudge? I don't think it's giving a bad message if it has the villain be the one to do that.
8:23 what hurts most about that fight is how self-destructive shadow is, telling sonic to get it over with while pointing at his chest. He didn’t care if he lived or died just as long as he got revenge.
Considering Gerald himself was planning to blow himself and Shadow up alongside Earth should tell you enough about them: avenging Maria was all they had left. After accomplishing this, they wouldn't have had anything left to live for.
It’s incredibly sad. I’m glad shadow lived but the fact he didn’t care if he lived or died was upsetting. I didn’t know Gerald was actually planning on killing shadow and himself
@@Joeblowdowntheroad It's even sadder when you remember, Shadow is still just a kid. He's no older than Sonic, he was imprisoned 50 years ago but he never grew or aged in that time. One of the GUN soldiers even tells the others not to shoot because "They're children!" Shadow was not only traumatized by the death of his best friend and sister figure, then kidnapped from the rubble of his home to be locked away for the rest of time. He had no time to grieve the loss of his former life and loved one, getting deemed as dangerous when he was only a child of circumstance. It wasn't his fault he was seemingly born with these high amounts of chaos energy. Being forced to relive her death over and over again in his mind for half a century. Then to make matters worse, the only person who he trusted that was still around from his past manipulates him into thinking his best friend would have wanted the earth destroyed. Gerald tried to tarnish the memories of a trauma ridden child for his own gain (yes he was grieving too but instead of trying to work through it with Shadow, who would know that deep pain, he used him which made him no better than GUN.) and even after all that Shadow still managed to do the right thing and do right by Maria. Whenever Shadow comes back, I hope Stone takes him in since they seem to have had a decent bond. Get the poor guy some therapy and a few cookies because he deserves all the love and care after all the bs GUN and Gerald put him through.
Yesterday, on christmas day, I watched it sitting next to an old man who was alone. He cried VERY hard, even trying not to scream, on every scene about the stars and grief in general. Given his reactions and that he was alone in the theater on christmas watching a "kids" movie, I think he was going through some kind of loss and grief. And his reaction proves that the themes of the film are handled greatly.
It’s one of the films that does what others don’t, and what I mean by that is it balances the target audience. A lot of OG Sonic fans praised the film deeply by saying how it’s the best of the trilogy due to how it was written along with the action and references. As for the newer fans, the film is for all ages to enjoy but it does plot beats for them to understand like the pacing
It broke me when Shadow goaded Sonic to finish him off. He was so deep in the hole of depression, I feel like in that moment, Shadow thought the only way to stop the pain was to just cease existing and that Sonic was the only person who could accomplish that. There is genuine catharsis in this film that really connects with the audience. THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD! 😭😭😭
I feel like he said that because he thought they all were gonna die either way because of the death beam thing so he thought he already did everything he had to do and didnt have anything else to lose
I'm not going to say "actually, in the game..." I'm just going to say that the reason this movie is the way it is, is because the story is loyal to the game, not 100%, but in the core elements of it. Which makes me hate to my guts how videogame critics ridiculized and made fun of Sonic stories like they could not be more, and like it was stupid just because it's an anthropomorphic hedgehog. Now the movie can reflect the quality of the story, its characters and most importantly, what we can learn about it, and the fact that people are liking it reflects it was always a good story (not a life changing story, just a good one)
i really loved that shot of Gerald crying because it gives a sense that Gerald really loved Maria and wasn't always just some mustache twirling villain who view the loss of her as an excuse to rule over the world, no he genuinely HATED the world after taking away his grand daughter and he's what shadow could've been if he lets his grief go out of control
@@liamphibia It was kept on long. But we do see that he's sad and upset for his grand daughter being gone. Hell, just the ending of it is him going "I'm taking the world and everyone out with it, including me." It's just sad that it seems the only one he cared about was her and not his other family members.
you know I really appreciate how this movie surprisngly did a decent job of interpreating one's trauma and pain. But that's a must when adapting a character like Shadow
After Tom got hurt, Sonic became surprisingly scary. While the movie certainly didn't stop with the comedy, none of it came from Sonic. And to see this optimistic jokester who, even in the most dire situations, could crack a joke, turn into a vengeful, out for blood, warrior was very surprising.
It definitely made the moment of his rage all the more intense since throughout the movies, we see Sonic so happy all the time. It's all been built up for this moment, and I'm going to see the previous movies in a more different light knowing how Sonic can be versus whom he chooses to be.
He was very close to being like this when he fought Eggman/Robitnik in the second film after going Super. There was no joking and you can see the serious anger in his eyes when staring down Robotnik (since Pre-transformation, Robotnik just tried to kill not only him, but his family too). We just didn’t get to see the full extent of his rage since he defeated Robotnik fairly quickly (and nobody died/was seriously injured).
I like how this movie changed Maria Robotnik’s death and someone really tried his best to stop a GUN soldier, but it was too late. I genuinely had tears when I saw Gerald’s face. It’s a really good movie that deserves high praise.
It's handled alright. But compared to the original source materials, It's a lot more devastating. But in spite of that, I'm glad they I'm glad they killed her off anyway.
The tragic part of that it was Walters, who was friendly with her, let her in to the lab, and seemed to be at least more aware of her importance to Gerald..and who was also the one that had to lock Shadow away. Probably by orders from higher-up, and he’s the last one Shadow sees before falling asleep, thus the reaction when Shadow sees a disguised Tom.
her death in the movie was devastating in a different, but equal way to her game counterpart. the worst part about her death in the movie is that arguably _everyone_ besides her had a play in her death. the gun soldier who shot the gun, walters who changed the trajectory of said gun. gerald and the other researchers/ scientists who were collecting shadows chaos energy, and shadow, whose chaos energy was what exploded and killed maria, along with being the reason gun was there in the first place. in the games, maria had a lot more control over her death. it was devastating in the way that she willingly sacrificed herself for shadow, got to give him her last words, her final wish. in the movie, she got none of that. no last words, no final wish, no willing sacrifice. and idk which story makes me more sad
@@Lupus-iv7jpthey are *technically* correct, but that’s only because the thing that decimated them stateside has only just now started to release worldwide
i like how Gerald and Shadow harbor a deep resentment towards the people who harmed them and took Maria away from them, but differentiates with their levels of vengeance. -Gerald was left awake and alive for 50years behind bars. Everyday being tortured by the memories of his dead granddaughter while being forced to cooperate with the people who took her away from him. -Meanwhile Shadow was left asleep and in statis for 50yrs unaware of the World's development but retains the last good memories with Maria in his dream until he was reawakened to remind him how she was killed. I cant blame Gerald really, he was just a broken man, who lost faith from humanity and probably went insane to really wanting to destroy Earth leaving it to dust together with him. But Shadow fortunately kept the last good and innocent memories of Maria that gave him hope, to do the right thing and preserve the things she once view as precious and save the Earth together with Sonic. Such a good film with lessons to learn, specially Eggman's appreciation for Agent Stone before he saved the world.
Imagine making sonic of all people SO mad that he doesnt come after you in his base form, but prioritize going super to come kill you, not "fight" you. That pretty scary even for sonic. Its like goku tranforming to his highest form just to make sure he kills you, not fight you lol
This movie isn't even the angriest I've seen Sonic. Back in season 3 of Sonic X, Sonic got so angry upon seeing his friends hurt that he even tapped into the negative energy of the chaos emeralds and his fur turned a very dark, almost black, shade of blue, and he was honestly scary. Eggman even came in to try and calm him down.
its crazy because he quite literally couldve stopped their plans right there and then, he was so deadset on killing him that he inadvertently caused the moon to get sliced in half, since gerald was able to fire the laser as a result
The fact a Sonic movie can be analyzed like this, the fact Shadows backstory was translated so well into film form shows the dedication to revitalize a series beloved by many but in terms of being mainstream doesn’t have the best reputation. I’m so happy this movie happend and is one of my favorite movies of the year as both a cinema lover and a Sonic fan
Knuckles could see Sonic was grieving; he himself went through that as well when his tribe was wiped out, so he knew the path that would be walked if he became too much of an obstacle for Sonic's anger to channel through. His character flourishes so much in that one scene, and I love it.
Ive watched Sonic X 13 years ago and I still remember that Maria dies in Shadow's backstory. So Maria's death is basically a canon event in all Sonic media
@@noobmasterruben5167 Yes, she is chilling with Thomas and Martha Wayne, Uncle Ben, and all the other friends, parents, relatives, parental figures, and lovers who die in the origin story.
I can't recall there ever being a game where two Super hedgehogs fight each other to the death, let alone to the extent of nearly ripping the world apart. This movie really went there. 👏
I think through the whole Franchise is the only other official Super Sonic VS Super Shadow fight we ever got was in the middle of Sonic X third season where there fought to hard it caused a black hole to emerge which killed one of the 4 main villains of that story as a casualty. And that was back in 2006.
@@rynobehnke8289 the closest in game that we get is Mecha Sonic using the master emerald to go super in Sonic & Knuckles. and thats assuming you had all the chaos emeralds to go super at that point
I didn't expect a great deep dive analysis on Sonic 3's themes. This was a really good study of 5 stages of grief, especially regarding Sonic and Shadow and what they went through in this movie. Kind of bums me out some people would dare say "This movie is for little children" when in actuality there's some excellent stuff to observe. Well done, Enchanted.👏🏻
Very much appreciated, this movie definitely had stuff for children to enjoy but it has so much for more than just that which makes it so entertaining and impactful
@Enchanted___ Hardcore agree and you're welcome. I'm just so happy we got a video game movie that has something to say while also embracing its source material. As a Sonic fan, I was so overwhelmed yet so overjoyed to the end.😄
The movie is kid friendly, and is also fun for adults, too. There’s language in it that I don’t allow my seven year old to repeat. And there’s adult jokes in there, too. I’m reminded of the scene where Agent Stone is tied up and Ivo Robotnik says “Why are you tied up? Do that on your own time. You disgust me.” 😳
Pretty much convinced me to watch it due to the tone hopefully four keeps it, but the final post credits gives me hope for a shadow the hedgehog adaptation.
Rather than being the '"erm, ackshually" guy, I'm going to instead say that Shadow's arc as it relates to his grief in the movie is about as faithful to SA2 as I could have asked for, and that if you want a game recommendation that explores those specific themes further, the recently released Shadow Generations tells a story about Shadow rechecking parts of his grief he thought buried, while also being one of the most fun games in the series.
@@rickyronny4019and the fact that they sneak in him crying is such a refreshing thing to see. Like let him get it out bro 😭 seeing him tear up in Sonic X was a pivotal moment of the series that I still remember years later
4:10 Gerald’s plan isn’t because he thinks Maria would have wanted it, it’s his way of getting back at the world in anger. Towards the end of the film when Shadow asked if this is what Maria would have wanted, Gerald says “It’s not about what she would’ve wanted. It’s about getting back at the world that took her from us” or something like that. Point is, he doesn’t care if this is what Maria wanted, he is acting out in anger.
I *LOVE* that the movies aren't the games. The games tell a story using that medium, and the movies tell a different, movie story. The two can't, and shouldn't be the same. The respect that the movies have shown, to the characters and to the viewers of both diehard fans and newcomers like Enchanted, is top-notch, and more studios should follow this model.
I liked the first two movies (yes, the Knuckles series too), but this, straight up cinema. I think I cried once watching this. Best Christmas gift ever.
I personally think Shadow was done better in the movie more than any of the games because of one change, he smiles. Even in flashbacks of his past in the game canon, he is haunted by living up to expectations, which does make a parallel to Sonic being natural gifted while Shadow trained to be that strong, them being at odds with each other really feels off when Shadow should be asking Sonic how he’s strong more than once to better help in Maria’s wish. The movie makes their characters as parallels rather than just their circumstances, as Shadow used to be just as happy as Sonic in the movies, but his happiness was taken away, giving a better reason to put Sonic and Shadow at odds. The scene where Shadow tells Super Sonic to finish it by putting Sonic’s fist on his heart was gut wrenching, heck the way Shadow also became Super just to lose it just to Sonic at his angriest just sells the trauma and grief both are going through. And the way both get back up again and even smiled in their Super forms were amazing as you know the talk they had on the moon got their sense of compassion back, as they both got people worth fighting for.
To better state. Both Shadow and Sonic have gone through grief. Sonic lost the owl and shadow lost his Maria. It’s how you handle your grief is what sets you apart and unfortunately Shadow wasn’t even able to process his feelings being put into stasis
I applaud this movie for showing me a scenario where Sonic could genuinely want to kill someone despite his usual attitude towards life, AND to use his connection to his human family as his guiding principle stopping him from going too far. I super appreciate how sonic's relationship to his human family is used.
I'm happy this movie did so well and respected Sonic music more compared to the previous movies. The storyline was done better here than in Sonic Adventure 2's story. It was great. Keanu Reeves really knocked it out of the park as Shadow.
@mandalorianhunter When it comes to the music, FR!! I said to myself before seeing the movie that the first two movies didn’t utilize the music from the games well. I applaud the developers for making good use of the music. Overall, amazing movie for a die hard Sonic fan like myself, and even those not acquainted with franchise can enjoy it.
@noahf.1127 yeah live and learn was welcomed but during the Sonic vs Shadow fight, For True story(Generations) should have come on. City escape and mechanical resonance should have been used in the first movie. The Knuckles theme Should have been used in the second movie. I like uptown funk but less pop music is better.
@mandalorianhunter Indeed, for the second movie, in the scene where Sonic snowboards down a mountain, a musical homage to Ice Cap should’ve been played. For the first movie, when Sonic is traveling the world with the rings, Spagonia-Day, Dragon Road-Day, and Sandopolis could’ve been hinted at musically, and die hard fans could’ve recognized them.
Still wish the biolizard was there so it could have been the full four minutes orchestra mixed instead of one minute just made the final deadline seem less impact besides Sonic almost dying that was tense. So the story is kind of better in the og to me.
It’s impressive how this movie touched the likes of a non fan so much to the point where a character like Shadow is able to resonate with him enough for him to make a whole video dissecting his character. Impressive
Thank goodness they didn't. Killing off Tom would've cheapen the movie. We already have so many dead characters in the movie, why would we need him on the list as well? To raise the stakes and do nothing else? Besides, it would've leave sour taste for people when Shadow got reintroduce in the future movie/series
@@boiledpopcorn9193 we got like ,3 major deaths in the movie, 4 if you count gerald, but that was more of a funny death. I don't see how 5 major deaths would be cheap
It's interesting to see some people actually giving this movie thematic analysis. I will say sonic did touch on bargaining when trying to convince knuckles and tails he needed to go super.
“There are no winners in revenge” is a message I wish more movies, video games, TV shows told their audience. Games like The Last of Us 2 failed simply because it’s another pointless revenge story that we’ve seen being told for years. Sonic is different because while it’s built on characters finding revenge, the characters make amends and realize it’s pointless before it’s too late. And I find that extremely powerful
@@campersparadise12I was thinking of Red Dead as well! One of my favorite revenge themes simply because it makes it clear to the audience how pointless it is.
Damn its crazy to think my childhood hero is getting praise for its third installment by non-sonic fans. Its honestly amazing to feel. If you are curious and I wont harp on this too much... In the games Shadow's story is very different but i think i like this adaptaion because they trimmed down a lot of the elements while they were able to keep what was essential. Namely Maria, Shadow and the tragedy around them both.
You might enjoy this too but as someone who isn’t a Sonic fan I just bought for myself Sonic x Shadow Generations and Sonic Adventure 2 so pretty excited to learn more
@@Enchanted___ Hey that's cool to hear. Honestly this is what videogame movies should be doing more often. Getting people interested in the source material. Kinda like how Lord of the Rings does for the books.
This movie was so incredible, I haven't had a movie hold me so tightly in years, everything about it was awesome I honestly didn't even notice much about the message of grief as I was just too excited to see my childhood in a movie, but from this video, I clearly see it now, they did an excellent job on that The moon scene is literally my absolute favorite scene, it was so lovely, for both Shadow and Sonic in that moment
Some notes from a Sonic Fan. First of all, as many people have pointed out, this movie is based on (But not a one-to-one) of Sonic Adventure 2's story. Maria dying at the hands of GUN, Shadow seeking vengeance, Gerald planning to destroy the world in his grief? All that is game stuff, though there's also a lot of differences (Most notably, Gerald is already dead by the time SA2 happens) Second, there's a lot of references to SA2 specifically, but I think the most thematic one would be the little tune that Maria plays at the start. The song is called "Live and Learn" and it's the main theme song of SA2, but the fact that the movie connects it directly to Maria is just. Oh it's a gut punch alright. That and Maria rollerskating connects Shadow using his hoverskates(Which is something he's always shown in his running animation in the games) to his memories of Maria is just *Chef's Kiss* Perfectly on theme. Also, for the people who watched the mid credits scene and were extremely confused: the Robot character is Metal Sonic, who is a robot doppelganger of Sonic who's only goal is to kill Sonic to prove that he's "The real Sonic". The fact there was *Multiple Metal Sonics* was terrifying for me, not gonna lie. The Pink Hedgehog on the other hand is Amy Rose, another ally of Sonic's from the games, which, given that both her and Metal both debuted in the same game (Sonic CD) definitely gives some theory fuel for the fourth movie, but doesn't directly tie into this movie.
I really love that despite his grief, they didn't make Sonic unlikeable. Sonic being irritable with Tails was understandable since Tails was honestly pretty dumb for saying that "It'll be okay" when Tom could possibly die. Also, despite arguing with Knuckles for the Master Emerald, Sonic was never aiming to take out his grief on his loved ones or brush them off. Honestly the whole Master Emerald conflict was contrived so that Tails & Knuckles could have less screen time in order to focus on Sonic and Shadow as well as Sonic not going Super all the time. While the character development wasn't great, it was still good. This may be the best written version of Sonic that we've ever had.
I loss a really close relative last year and still I can't believe I cried with the line of Shadow "The light still remains" and Sonic words that love is more powerful, I came to theater expecting to distract myself about this pain and came out touched. Wasnt expecting that from my last movie of 2024, but im glad it happen, I needed to hear something different of what people close to me keep saying that this pain just go away with time when I know it won't.
The juxtaposition of the message from the movie to the games is a fun thing to talk about. The movie talks about revenge and the pain of loss while the games talk about how everyone deserves a shot at freedom, a shot at happiness. People can be selfish, they hurt others but even they deserve a second chance. Shadow never forgave those that killed Maria, but he did make peace with it. I think that may be where Shadow's character is headed in the future of the movies.
There are a couple of moments in this film that stick out to me. All of which are pivotal character decisions. Knuckles relenting to Sonic and telling him where the master emerald is was one of them. It shows massive character growth from the last movie, and also is likely the sole reason their family survived this movie without breaking apart. A fight in that moment would have done irreparable damage. There was also Shadow asking Sonic to finish him. It not only showed how deeply hurt Shadow was, but also showed that he wasn't all gone. In his final moment, when the chips were down, he tried to help somebody. It's messed up, but he was being generous and giving Sonic what he himself wanted, revenge. It's the final moment that really locks in his redemption for me. Lastly, I really loved the way Sonic helped Shadow in the end. The lesson of the movie is great, and probably the most mature commentary I've seen in youth media on revenge and grief. Also, it goes great with the song that plays afterward. Shadow wished to die, but Sonic saved him instead. By choosing instead to live, Shadow learns acceptance. Same goes for Sonic. They literally live and learn right before the song plays.
I've dealt with hurt and grief for most of my life; partly because I obsessed over Sonic when I was young (and still do) but also from simply being different from everyone else because of my Asperger's. Seeing Sonic 3 adapt Shadow and explore his pain so well honestly made me cry and probably will make me cry every time I watch it.
This movie is up there with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish for me. It’s a kids movie that doesn’t dumb itself down into key jingling because the audience is primarily made of children, it actually has emotion and something to teach.
I am so happy sonic the hedgehog 3 is beating mufasa because as a sonic hedgehog fan who loves the games and shadow the hedgehog and his character in the games and this movie was amazing in my opinion.
not to be the "actually in the games" but there is one thing that they skipped over in the movie that I think makes a bit of a difference it's probably already been mentioned but in the games the reason gerald was researching shadow was to try and find a cure to some type of disease that Maria had (some speculate to be cancer, or a degenerative disease), and I think that's something that makes his decent into villainy a bit more understandable, GUN not only was responsible for taking Maria's life, they manipulated him, they took all his years working to try and do good, and used then to make weapons, and they forced him to work on then. his reasons for doing what he doesd in the games is simply hatred, because of what GUN made to him, he just like shadow had the world take everything from him, but he was too far gone in his vengeance to the point he could not go back. Overall I love the movie, and I few that's one of the few things that they really should've included somehow, because it turns him even more empathetic even if just by a little bit.
I especially loved seeing the parallels with Shadow and Stone, which I won’t state how in the comments (due to spoilers ofc) but it’s genuinely amazing how well they work in sync to one another. I love Stone, he’s a character I genuinely wanna learn more about, and I absolutely love Shadow, he’s a character that (given prior knowledge) while I already know what’s going on with him am more than excited to explore some more in the future. I really hope that if anything, Stone and Shadow both have moments together in the future movies I also love how this movie goes a slightly different route with Movie Shadow’s characterization than his game characterization. While the games do show Shadow as a cool and (debatably) emotionally distant character (although that’s not a bad thing), Movie Shadow is, given the amalgamation of things) very clearly a child. A confused, and broken child, someone who’s innocence was taken away from him, who was treated as a monster and a freak when he was nothing but a sad young boy who wanted to be treated well by others, and if anything, still does. He seems to carry more grief than anger, and grief that Sonic is able to empathize with. Praying and hoping that Shadow is able to find himself in the future, that Sonic and Shadow grow closer both as rivals AND as friends (slightly different from the games), and that Shadow and Stone do find some peace in each other, or just interact more, MUCH more, in the movie verse here on out. This movie was beautiful, and made me love these little fluffballs so much more then I already do 😭👏
I really liked how Sonic 3 rearranged and played around with Sonic Adventure 2's story, yet still maintained its emotional core and message. Seeing Gerald alive and still maintaining his scorn towards humanity was an interesting angle. It was especially cold when he was willing to walk over his own Grandson because of Maria. Even ALIVE Gerald was still a vengeful spirit.
As a huge Sonic fan whose favorite character is Shadow and whose favorite game is Sonic Adventure 2, it's been so incredible seeing Sonic 3 resonate with non-fans. I think it really goes to show how compelling Shadow's story is, and I'm so glad that more people are getting to experience it.
Even if someone isn't knowledgeable about the games, I'm glad this can bring people together and enjoy a fun movie franchise! I applaud the fans for the work they did in getting them to change the design. Imagine if paramount had spat on their fans the way the House of Rat does.
While I agree the 5 stages of grief have a part to play, I don’t think that was solely Shadow’s character arc. The reason he broke out wasn’t because of an emotional trigger, but literally Gerald shutting down the security systems in GUN’s Japan base. It’s a theme that the people you surround yourself with also have a part to play in how you experience loss: for Sonic, he lost Longclaw and nearly Tom but came over those feelings of vengeance because he had other people who loved and believed in him. But with Shadow, he wasn’t given that love by anyone but Maria, because he was seen as a weapon used to fuel this nuclear device. Gerald only gave Shadow false pretences at getting back at people, because he himself was under this same illusion of making his grief stop, even if it meant killing himself. And after Sonic and Shadow’s talk on the moon, it’s implied that he hasn’t finished his cycle of grief because he didn’t have loved ones to confide in like Sonic did, which he’ll probably have to go through if he gets his own solo movie. But that’s just how I see it, please don’t kill everyone in a 25,000ft radius 🙏
Spoiler warning The scene where Jim Carrey breaks the 4th wall while meeting himself is funny as hell. Also Jim Carrey saying goodbye feels like Charles Martinet in the mario movie🥹🥹
Part of me wishes I hadn’t gone into the movie knowing some details of Shadow’s video game backstory. It made it harder for me to appreciate the movie for what it was, rather than what I wanted it to be. This video helped put the movie into a new perspective for me, and I do appreciate that I will say, the part of the movie that has really stuck with me in an “Oh, what the fuck…” kind of way is the fact that Gerald and Shadow’s plan was a murder-suicide pact (albeit, involving the whole world for the murder part). We don’t get a lot of detail about Shadow and Gerald’s relationship in the past, but we can assume that Gerald was important to Shadow as Maria’s grandfather. It makes me kind of sick to think of Gerald manipulating Shadow down the this self-destructive path due to their shared grief, especially when it’s implied Shadow is just a kid (He and Maria are collectively referred to as “kids” in the death flashback by Gerald, and I don’t interpret Shadow has having aged physically or mentally during his 50 year-long stasis, but the latter are just my thoughts) The fact that Shadow seems to goad Sonic into hurting/killing him on the moon broke my heart. Poor guy
It all boils down to the reason why everyone LOVES this movie and the message of it is because Sonic is legally not allowed to be sad or cry in games Like you KNOW dude is going through a lot In the IDW comics it shows him dealing with the internal struggle of not being able to save everyone, but we haven't gotten a fully fleshed out scene of Sonic just being sad and letting anger control him to this extent ever before (besides like once or twice in Archie) I've always wanted to see that mf SNAP and he sure did in this movie
I think the mandates are fake ngl. Sonic has showed anger in the games a few times, like with Shahra's death in secret rings when he took all the negative rings into himself to transform into darkspine, or at the end of unleashed when he displayed despair/dread, telling Chip to run. Sure they aren't common, but still there.
I'm happy that I've seen Sonic 3 in the cinemas, twice. There is a lot about the movie that has so much care, sincerity, passion and brilliance. The characters are on point, the acting is brilliant, the music choices is amazing, the story is wonderful and the message about grief is beautiful. Thank you for this video & may your future be brighter than the sun.
TBF about Mufasa (a movie which makes Scar unrelated to Mufasa even tough he was Simba's uncle in the 94 film). Just watch Transfomers One (seriously its a great movie that's also about a best friend/brother in arms relationship before it went upside down, done dirty by the marketing)
Comparing how Sonic 3 handles grief vs. Mufasa is so night and day it’s insane For those who didn’t watch it(I don’t recommend it’s not great) Mufasa has multiple storylines of lost parents and such and outright ignores them. There’s a whole thing about how Mufasa misses his parents and wants to see them again but we never actually see that he only tells us. He’s doing just fine in his adoptive family and when they’re killed he’s not sad at all, no denial, anger, bargaining, depression at all, he just all of a sudden really wants to find his birth parents and whoop Dee doo his mom is a ok and has been looking for him for years. Even when he hears his father is dead he’s sad for literally 30 seconds and immediately moves on after a little pep talk. Sonic 3(and the games as well) manage to handle grief with so much more delicacy and realism it’s hard to believe it’s about blue porcupine that goes fast😭
Don't wanna be *that* guy, but actually the games explore also the themes of grief and revenge with Shadow's arc, but I REALLY love the way it was adapted and polished for the big screen in a way that is both faithful to the source material and the established canon of the movies, simply amazing
Shadow Generations was even more detailed than Sonic Adventure 2, it explains all of Gerald's backstory and reveals what happened with the Biolizard. Sonic 3 did an excellent job of adapting SA2 though.
Merry Christmas! 🎁 I just love the fact that this film is a wakeup call to modern companies to listen to the fans and actually respect your customers. Merry Christmas, and may the mouse cope and mald.
theres not even any 'but acsktually' moments to speak of. they adapted shadows story perfectly for this cinematic world and general movie audience. just goes to show how compelling the game characters can actually be when given the proper attention that a 33 year old legendary IP should be getting.
I’m sure it’s been stated but this movie adapted Sonic Adventure 2, which is considered one of the best Sonic games story-wise. While the film was dark at times, the events of project Shadow was darker. Gerald Robotnic’s journal details pretty much everything, but I recommend watching a video on it. There are words that are redacted and things that need some more context.
One of the scenes that really got to me was Sonic's dark turn towards the 3rd act of the movie. After Sonic witness Tom's Injury he immediately turns to vengeance to get back at Shadow and demands the master emerald from his friends. Now usually when Sonic goes Supersonic its mostly positive, impactful and encouraging because you know he's using them for the right reasons and to protect his love ones but here it feels dark, selfish, and out of vengeance because he's literally aiming to kill Shadow at this point. Another scene would be when Shadow starts cooking Sonic for making the same mistakes as he did. Sonic had gotten a taste of the same medicine that Shadow had already gotten but instead of sticking to his morals, values, friends, and family he abandons them for revenge. And Shadow throws it all back in his face with him saying: And here I thought you cared for them.
1:10 welcome to sonic where you go from blue guy goes fast to government conspiracy and coverups and a kid getting shot (sonic has a lot of brand leeway)
I absolutely loved this third film.My theatre was packed and I was chosen to do an interview and talk about it after it ended and if I would recommend it. I've adored Sonic and the games since I was a little girl and it makes me happy how we've now gotten 3 films to watch. I loved how they made Shadow, I was scared they would make him edgy, and I'm glad they did not. He is so flawed and didn't care for anyone as long as he got his revenge on Maria and Sonic being the only one truly understanding him despite them being very different.
You phrased it better than I could, was thinking about some of this but didn't know how to line it up. Only addition I'd make is that Shadow's Depression stage I think was present all throughout though arguably at it's biggest in the period of the Super fight where he's just trying to get Sonic to kill him.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!!! Tell me what you thought of Sonic 3!

Sonic 3 is the perfect movie to ever be brought into existence
Yeah for real. I love how he was honest and just told shadow “no” and that his pain after losing long claw never went away.
Respect
Mufasa unintentionally has the lesson that you should hold onto grudges, while Sonic 3 explicitly says that you should not hold onto your grudges and grief.
Good point

This may suggest Shadow may have a concept of afterlife, so he can reunited with Maria
He missed her too much (and undeniably so)
I am still recovering, why would you say this? 😭😭😭
@@Joeblowdowntheroad It's even sadder when you remember, Shadow is still just a kid. He's no older than Sonic, he was imprisoned 50 years ago but he never grew or aged in that time. One of the GUN soldiers even tells the others not to shoot because "They're children!"
Shadow was not only traumatized by the death of his best friend and sister figure, then kidnapped from the rubble of his home to be locked away for the rest of time.

@ yup
It broke me when Shadow goaded Sonic to finish him off. He was so deep in the hole of depression, I feel like in that moment, Shadow thought the only way to stop the pain was to just cease existing and that Sonic was the only person who could accomplish that. There is genuine catharsis in this film that really connects with the audience. THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD! 😭😭😭

@@joshshrum2764 😭😭😭
I feel like he said that because he thought they all were gonna die either way because of the death beam thing so he thought he already did everything he had to do and didnt have anything else to lose
I originally thought of it has a "C'mon, you are not a hero, you are just like me, kill me"
I'm not going to say "actually, in the game..."
I'm just going to say that the reason this movie is the way it is, is because the story is loyal to the game, not 100%, but in the core elements of it.
THIS!!
i really loved that shot of Gerald crying because it gives a sense that Gerald really loved Maria and wasn't always just some mustache twirling villain who view the loss of her as an excuse to rule over the world, no he genuinely HATED the world after taking away his grand daughter and he's what shadow could've been if he lets his grief go out of control
Really? I must've missed that shot cuz I was briefly looking around at other people's reactions in my theater when Maria died.

Ehhh, I dunno.
you know I really appreciate how this movie surprisngly did a decent job of interpreating one's trauma and pain.
Write me an article. 😂
Ngl, I was so scared he mightve somehow ended up turning into fleetway after being super pissed off

Lock in weakling
The tragic part of that it was Walters, who was friendly with her, let her in to the lab, and seemed to be at least more aware of her importance to Gerald..and who was also the one that had to lock Shadow away. Probably by orders from higher-up, and he’s the last one Shadow sees before falling asleep, thus the reaction when Shadow sees a disguised Tom.
her death in the movie was devastating in a different, but equal way to her game counterpart. the worst part about her death in the movie is that arguably _everyone_ besides her had a play in her death. the gun soldier who shot the gun, walters who changed the trajectory of said gun. gerald and the other researchers/ scientists who were collecting shadows chaos energy, and shadow, whose chaos energy was what exploded and killed maria, along with being the reason gun was there in the first place.
in the games, maria had a lot more control over her death. it was devastating in the way that she willingly sacrificed herself for shadow, got to give him her last words, her final wish. in the movie, she got none of that. no last words, no final wish, no willing sacrifice. and idk which story makes me more sad

i like how Gerald and Shadow harbor a deep resentment towards the people who harmed them and took Maria away from them, but differentiates with their levels of vengeance.
Im glad Knuckles relented honestly because seeing Sonic get a second thrashing after watching Tom gets hurt would've been insult to injury
Knuckles could see Sonic was grieving; he himself went through that as well when his tribe was wiped out, so he knew the path that would be walked if he became too much of an obstacle for Sonic's anger to channel through. His character flourishes so much in that one scene, and I love it.

It made my Christmas hope Eggman didn’t die, but poor agent stone ugh.
Couldn't have said it better myself
Holy yap, but I’ll still read it cuz it’s interesting
To better state. Both Shadow and Sonic have gone through grief. Sonic lost the owl and shadow lost his Maria. It’s how you handle your grief is what sets you apart and unfortunately Shadow wasn’t even able to process his feelings being put into stasis

@mandalorianhunter Indeed, for the second movie, in the scene where Sonic snowboards down a mountain, a musical homage to Ice Cap should’ve been played.

I absolutely agree with this. Red Dead Redemption 2 also does this with Arthur, it shows you can the make right choices before it is too late.

The moon scene is literally my absolute favorite scene, it was so lovely, for both Shadow and Sonic in that moment
All that is game stuff, though there's also a lot of differences (Most notably, Gerald is already dead by the time SA2 happens)
Second, there's a lot of references to SA2 specifically, but I think the most thematic one would be the little tune that Maria plays at the start.
How is it compared to Frontiers' sonic?
Good analysis. This movie actually has a fantastic message, it taught me a lot about grief.
Hopefully shadow can move on, perhaps in the 4th movie
I loss a really close relative last year and still I can't believe I cried with the line of Shadow "The light still remains" and Sonic words that love is more powerful, I came to theater expecting to distract myself about this pain and came out touched.
Wasnt expecting that from my last movie of 2024, but im glad it happen, I needed to hear something different of what people close to me keep saying that this pain just go away with time when I know it won't.
Sonic almost went full Fleetway on Shadow during their Super form fight.
He doesn’t know these deepcuts xd.
He almost went Dark Sonic at that moment (imo)
Ngl the biggest reason to why i cried 3 TIMES in the movie is because how it perfectly connects with entire story arcs from the games
"1:57 - 2:01 MAKES ME WANT TO SPREAD THE HOLIDY SPIRIT"
for a free heart!!!
I actually cried in the theater. I relate to Shadow so much, and they poured so much passion into the entire movie. They deserve an award.
Erm, in the games, Sonic is actually a blue hedgehog
I've dealt with hurt and grief for most of my life; partly because I obsessed over Sonic when I was young (and still do) but also from simply being different from everyone else because of my Asperger's. Seeing Sonic 3 adapt Shadow and explore his pain so well honestly made me cry and probably will make me cry every time I watch it.
suprisingly dr. robotink had the best arc/emotional story which was a pleasnt surprise
It FUCKING WAS YES
7:35 yeah i think so in the games he eventually accepts what happened and also had time to greave in the new game sonic x shadow generations
Yeah, if you played that game, yeah
This movie is up there with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish for me. It’s a kids movie that doesn’t dumb itself down into key jingling because the audience is primarily made of children, it actually has emotion and something to teach.
I am so happy sonic the hedgehog 3 is beating mufasa because as a sonic hedgehog fan who loves the games and shadow the hedgehog and his character in the games and this movie was amazing in my opinion.
not to be the "actually in the games" but there is one thing that they skipped over in the movie that I think makes a bit of a difference
it's probably already been mentioned but in the games the reason gerald was researching shadow was to try and find a cure to some type of disease that Maria had (some speculate to be cancer, or a degenerative disease), and I think that's something that makes his decent into villainy a bit more understandable, GUN not only was responsible for taking Maria's life, they manipulated him, they took all his years working to try and do good, and used then to make weapons, and they forced him to work on then.
his reasons for doing what he doesd in the games is simply hatred, because of what GUN made to him, he just like shadow had the world take everything from him, but he was too far gone in his vengeance to the point he could not go back.
I really hope that if anything, Stone and Shadow both have moments together in the future movies
I also love how this movie goes a slightly different route with Movie Shadow’s characterization than his game characterization.
This movie was beautiful, and made me love these little fluffballs so much more then I already do 😭👏
3:12 Shadow on the way to find latinas
I really liked how Sonic 3 rearranged and played around with Sonic Adventure 2's story, yet still maintained its emotional core and message. Seeing Gerald alive and still maintaining his scorn towards humanity was an interesting angle. It was especially cold when he was willing to walk over his own Grandson because of Maria. Even ALIVE Gerald was still a vengeful spirit.
When Gerald dropped the comedy he was legit terrifying.
3:20 I thought you were about to say “Shadow has a problem with guns” considering what happened to Maria
Shadow himself has no problem using a gun
Yeah and shooting it at the devil lol.

@ you too, man
As a huge Sonic fan whose favorite character is Shadow and whose favorite game is Sonic Adventure 2, it's been so incredible seeing Sonic 3 resonate with non-fans. I think it really goes to show how compelling Shadow's story is, and I'm so glad that more people are getting to experience it.
Amazing to see an analysis video of Sonic 3 from someone who isn't a Sonic fan! Excellent video, keep up the good work!
Spoiler warning
The scene where Jim Carrey breaks the 4th wall while meeting himself is funny as hell. Also Jim Carrey saying goodbye feels like Charles Martinet in the mario movie🥹🥹
Those two scenes were great
When I heard Jim Carrey was going to be Gerald and Ivo, I knew it was gonna be funny!
Christmas with Sonic and family is special thing guys!! 1:59
I really love seeing Jim Carrey playing more serious scenes in movies. He's such a talented person.
Honestly this movie was really fateful to shadow's character
Part of me wishes I hadn’t gone into the movie knowing some details of Shadow’s video game backstory. It made it harder for me to appreciate the movie for what it was, rather than what I wanted it to be. This video helped put the movie into a new perspective for me, and I do appreciate that
I will say, the part of the movie that has really stuck with me in an “Oh, what the fuck…” kind of way is the fact that Gerald and Shadow’s plan was a murder-suicide pact (albeit, involving the whole world for the murder part). We don’t get a lot of detail about Shadow and Gerald’s relationship in the past, but we can assume that Gerald was important to Shadow as Maria’s grandfather. It makes me kind of sick to think of Gerald manipulating Shadow down the this self-destructive path due to their shared grief, especially when it’s implied Shadow is just a kid (He and Maria are collectively referred to as “kids” in the death flashback by Gerald, and I don’t interpret Shadow has having aged physically or mentally during his 50 year-long stasis, but the latter are just my thoughts)
The fact that Shadow seems to goad Sonic into hurting/killing him on the moon broke my heart. Poor guy
It all boils down to the reason why everyone LOVES this movie and the message of it is because Sonic is legally not allowed to be sad or cry in games
Like you KNOW dude is going through a lot
In the IDW comics it shows him dealing with the internal struggle of not being able to save everyone, but we haven't gotten a fully fleshed out scene of Sonic just being sad and letting anger control him to this extent ever before (besides like once or twice in Archie)
I've always wanted to see that mf SNAP and he sure did in this movie
Thankfully, it seems like the movies are free from SEGA's idiotic mandates.
@docvoygx3788 Also, the fallout in Transformers didn't happen because one of the characters was a simp.
Someone needed to play sonic adventure 2
I just bought the game so I can understand a bit more

Comparing how Sonic 3 handles grief vs. Mufasa is so night and day it’s insane
For those who didn’t watch it(I don’t recommend it’s not great) Mufasa has multiple storylines of lost parents and such and outright ignores them.
It's weird that the cartoonish character has more nuance than the realistic animal but here we are
Don't wanna be *that* guy, but actually the games explore also the themes of grief and revenge with Shadow's arc, but I REALLY love the way it was adapted and polished for the big screen in a way that is both faithful to the source material and the established canon of the movies, simply amazing
Shadow Generations was even more detailed than Sonic Adventure 2, it explains all of Gerald's backstory and reveals what happened with the Biolizard. Sonic 3 did an excellent job of adapting SA2 though.
No one lazered the moon eggman pissed on it
Finally someone gets it
I was never a sonic fan but after watching sonic 3 i turned into one. i even have a sonic wallpaper now!
Hell yes that’s live, and learn, but listen to frontiers boss music.
Amazing video, subbed, I am punped for the future of the franchise, this novie was so worth seeing on opening night, happy new year!🙌🏾😃
Merry Christmas! 🎁
I just love the fact that this film is a wakeup call to modern companies to listen to the fans and actually respect your customers.
Dropping a like just for "i didn't know there was child murder" 😂
not had that SA2 experience, loved you saw it without intense expectations 😅
I’m sure it’s been stated but this movie adapted Sonic Adventure 2, which is considered one of the best Sonic games story-wise. While the film was dark at times, the events of project Shadow was darker. Gerald Robotnic’s journal details pretty much everything, but I recommend watching a video on it. There are words that are redacted and things that need some more context.
I’m so excited to play it, I’ve gotten so many comments telling me that this game is so good
One of the scenes that really got to me was Sonic's dark turn towards the 3rd act of the movie.
1:10 welcome to sonic where you go from blue guy goes fast to government conspiracy and coverups and a kid getting shot
(sonic has a lot of brand leeway)
Cant wait to Watch it the next day ! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah ✌️
Right back at you, Happy Holidays!
Oh my gosh i almost heard the spoiler 0:50
Gettin involved in sonic without ever looking into Sonic Adventure 2 and the early games because those are the best era is absurd.
I’ve played through half of the game since I uploaded this video
1:36 -1:56
Best 20 seconds of this channel 👌
You phrased it better than I could, was thinking about some of this but didn't know how to line it up. Only addition I'd make is that Shadow's Depression stage I think was present all throughout though arguably at it's biggest in the period of the Super fight where he's just trying to get Sonic to kill him.
1:57 - 2:01 makes me want to spread the holiday spirit! 🌲❄️
