      The thing was they never needed to build lore around the origins of the Riders...the good part of the Japanese ones is that the title "Kamen Rider" has no multi-versal implication, it's just the title of the superhero of the version of Japan.
      Whenever Toei try to build lore around the riders, it just doesnt work (looking at Decade and Zio)

Network at the time, and the promo producers and jr execs (who averaged 24 years of age) built up a complete backstory to explain Hal and Barbara's marriage, and just how Albi got into the picture. I believe the real reason Kamen Rider Dragon Knight failed, was because it wasn't in the right time slot. It was on Saturday morning, which is primarily geared toward younger children. I think the show would have appealed more to the slightly older Toonami crowd.

    • @JohnDoe-wq5eu
      @JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The irony was that was right around the time that toonami basically ceased to exist. Cartoon Network was going through a lot of changes and one of the first things to get the ax was toonami. And there was a good I don't know 5 years before toonami became part of adult swim so it simply ceased to exist between like 2008 and 2012. I'm not entirely sure about those numbers but I know sometime in the 2008 range the toonami block got dropped for maguzi which was geared toward even younger kids and they pretty much phased out anything anime outside of adult swim.

I have to say it's been very eye-opening seeing just how much I had to be changed between the Japanese version and the US one I mean obviously there has to be some changes to adapt it to a totally different audience but tonally a lot of the changes are horrible and take a show that could have been one thing into something totally different. Also because of how little usable footage was available they really had to get creative or in a lot of these cases just reuse a lot of scenes over and over.

    5:55 another fun fact! in Kamen Rider shows, the 'costumes' were often... not costumes or suits that powered the characters up, but full on transformations or a mix and match thing (for example: original Kamen rider had implied body transformation, but their helmets/masks were still proper masks that had to be put on)
    Kamen Rider Amazon and the titular rider that was addapted, black/black RX in particular were full on transformations instead of costumes.
    Amazon turned into a violent lizard-bug man capable of biting and clawing at his enemies, with official art often showing him as an organic thing rather than a setting.
    As for black, you actually see the protagonist turn into a digusting bug man in the first episode (though in silhouetted form) before properly completing the transformation and taking the more costume/humanoid form... and every transformation sequence actually alluding to that, with a shot of his human head which flashes into a monstrous bug form before forming into the 'costume' helmet.
    This concept was brought to life more directly in the Shin Kamen Rider movie, were the protag just full on undergoes a gory transformation into an anthropomorphic murderous bug man.

    • @Getwright-
      @Getwright- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Maioly
      @Maioly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Getwright- Sentai actually varies sometimes.
      Its generally suits, but some are suits + extra
      and some are full transformation.
      The very second one has our 'rangers' getting full on surgically transformed into cyborgs and transforming into their more 'robotic' costume forms with a specific process
      the very first sentai is... weird about it, its like costumes but they can literally just change into them in a sec, and one of the seconds even has earings on it (explosive earings at that).
      Think Gekiranger was a full on transformation, considering some of the lore there.

    I have always believed that the second US Kamen Rider adaptation’s biggest stumbling block was that they chose to adapt a season of Kamen Rider that was already several years old. The Japanese Kamen Rider shows had significantly improved their special effects since then and the show would have looked far more impressive if they had adapted a newer series. My impression is that is that they chose to adapt Kamen Rider Ryuki into Kamen Rider Dragon Knight because Ryuki had one of the largest number of riders in a series. Plenty of toy potential. One up side to using Ryuki is that the Ryuki movie featured a female rider (an extreme rarity in the history of Japanese Kamen Rider) so they were able to feature a female rider in Dragon Knight.

    • @Levitz9
      @Levitz9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      By that logic, they should have brought Decade over. There wouldn't have been any need to expand on the legacy of the Riders Decade met, they could just make stuff up. Hell, the Dragon Knight fighting game they released on the Wii was actually the Kamen Rider Decade fighting game (which had featured the entire cast of Ryuki Riders as playable characters). They just axed all the other characters and tried to replace them with a brawler mode!

    • @ErsatzYankel
      @ErsatzYankel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Levitz9 Decade certainly would have looked better, and there are a lot of Riders, but if I remember correctly Kamen Rider Dragon Knight predates Kamen Rider Decade by a year or two. Practically speaking, given when Dragon Knight was made, I think Kamen Rider Kabuto would have been the best choice to adapt. The main Rider suit looks really good and there are still a large assortment other Riders in the show. And using the much more recent Kabuto footage would have looked better than the Ryuki footage.

    The real problem with why Dragon Knight was cancelled was due simply to the fact that the CW, which frequently changed the name of the programming block which at the time was called Vortex, did NO ADVERTISING FOR IT. It also didn't help much that the toyline was a bit jumbled with the figures being great but the belt being extremely ugly and didn't function at all like the original one thanks to a revolving gimmick that the "deck boxes" which were now reduced to cardboard cutouts would slide into. It is worth noting that the series did get a release in Japan with the original English audio intact alongside a new Japanese dub. I hope we get one more shot at the shows as Build would be one of the best selling ones here just looking at the toyline alone.

    Back in '08 when Dragon Knight was about to premier, I remember OtakUSA magazine covering it and talking to some of the cast and crew. They explained they had to go to Toei in Japan and take a quiz on Kamen Rider to show that they were on the same page. And even as of a few months ago in an interview with Variety, a Toei producer mentioned Masked Rider off-hand and joked about how the recent efforts at bringing Kamen Rider to America (like the Kamen Rider W anime set to be released in the US) was "revenge" for Masked Rider. Toei is still very sore, and for good reason.
    As a side note, I remember back when Saban bought back the Power Rangers license from Disney and released Power Rangers Samurai that there was a lot of buzz over Saban taking a trademark out on the name "Power Rider". There was a lot of hope that this would lead to a second shot at adapting Kamen Rider, but evidently nothing came of it. A pity.

    Sometimes, I can't help but wonder if perhaps things might've turned out differently for this series had "Saban's Masked Rider" done just a few things instead of what they actually ended up doing with the show/
    First of all, no Ferbus. He was cute but completely unnecessary and caused the show's tone to be widely inconsistent. Get the most obvious thing out of the way.
    Have it be a two-season adaptation of both "BLACK" and "BLACK RX". The first season "BLACK", would take place on Edenoi suffering through a post-apocloyptic plague caused by the Gorgom cult. This would be all done with a tone very akin to the Judd Lynn scripted Post-Zordon era Seasons of "Power Rangers" including the orchestral music and more drama driven writing. Since the series aired weekly on Saturday mornings instead airing also on weekdays like the Rangers and Troopers, the show would also be serialized, thereby making it necessary for you to watch EVERY WEEK.
    The first season would end with Dex defeating the big bad, but despite that, the massive ecological and economic damage to the planet had already been done giving the season a cliffhanger/downer ending. Going into the second season "BLACK RX", as the Edonites try to rebuild, Dex's uncle Dregon is revealed to have betrayed the planet and used the remnants of Gorgom's cult to create the insectivore army which prompts the premise that we're familiar with from the show we actually got.
    I remember seeing the original trailer that included footage from "Masked Rider's" pilot, and it seemed to imply that the original intention was for Masked Rider's story to be similar to Superman's in the sense that after King Lexian sends Dex to Earth . . . Edenoi blows up. Instead of the "Masked Rider" warriors in the finale, Dex would be joined by the Power Rangers to defeat Count Dregon once and for all.
    They'd probably have to recreate that monster costume, but "VR Troopers" managed to make an adequate suit for their originally Japanese main villain. Maybe it could've worked. I know it's long past the point it matters, but I'm just coming up with my own ideas for fun. What do you guys think?

My friend and I were talking about Power Rangers yesterday, and I said “I’m surprised Saban never did anything with Kamen Rider.” I was 5 when Power Rangers came out, and I watched pretty much until high school. I also watched VR Troopers, Samurai Cyber-Squad, and Beetleborgs. I don’t remember a single frame of this.

      Yeah when this thing flopped it was buried very deep never to be seen again. And from the sound of it I can see why if the Japanese company involved yanked the license and basically said it could never be touched again. I mean you know you effed up bad when the Japanese just completely ban any other versions of the show ever. I was barely aware of the 2008 version although again it aired at a horrible time that made it very easy to miss and it sounds like it got very limited video releases so it's kinda lost too.

      That's strange, because Power Rangers cross-promoted Masked Rider in its third season premiere! So that led me to watching several Masked Rider episodes, but I was only vaguely aware of VR Troopers and weirded out by what little I saw of Big Bad Beetleborgs, and I don't think I even heard of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad until sometime last decade.

    I really loved the introduction of the character in Power Rangers and I loved the idea of him having his own group of rebels with the hoods and gas masks, doing hit and run attacks on Count Dregon's forces. If that was the show, it would have been awesome. Unfortunately, they put him on Earth in the suburbs with dumb comedy and villains of the week. With that said, his armor, armory and vehicles were awesome, and that opening theme was so damn great and epic that I can't hate on the show, I wish it were on DVD or streaming. I think if they had him mainly on Edenoi and then had him occasionally save an Earth-like colony (to explain the Japanese footage where he's in the city) but mainly tell the story of the Edenoi rebellion it probably would have gotten a bigger fanbase.

    I don't know if "DuckBears" is something he came up with just for this episode, but I'm honestly shocked that *wasn't* a thing at some point in the 80s or early 90s. But golly, I'll have to watch the first episode again because I assumed the ZO and J stuff would have happened towards the end... sheesh!
    Saban must have had a small hope to reuse Kamen Rider back in 2011 when he trademarked... but it was abandoned in 2014...

      That's true for quite a few of these type of shows. To see they were heavily adapted is a deep understatement. Obviously they removed as much cultural stuff as they could but the tone of a lot of these was completely different in the Japanese version. I mean they usually make these a lot more light compared to their Japanese counterparts. I guess they pretty much have to considering they're going for a very young audience for the most part.

      I think a lot of it has to do with children's programming in general and S&P and basically what's allowed in kids TV which violence and death especially are big no-nos.
      Which does pretty much destroy any sense of steaks or tension in a show like this but maybe that was the whole point. Like I said the American versions always seem to make it much more light and really no one's in true danger no one gets injured really everything's downplayed so significantly. It is a shame because it just takes any and all tension and drama out of it. But then again look at what a lot of early anime and stuff did as well or at least stuff during the '80s and '90s where you just couldn't have characters "dying" even characters bleeding or drinking were big problems as was anything remotely suggestive for the most part. Again it's definitely a cultural thing where Japan just doesn't see any of this as a problem whereas America is way over the top as far as what's allowed and what isn't. And there's very little wiggle room. I know there was some version of power rangers recently where you can tell one of the monsters was drinking sake but they kept referring to it as his "medicine" or something.
      Again it's just kind of ridiculous and I feel like we're not getting any closer to the original versions than we ever did.

      Well there was samurai and super samurai but yeah they do the best they can with what they're given.
      I mean I remember Naruto used terms during it's original toonami run like "elixir" and stuff like the toonami dub/version of tenchi muyo it was "tea" but alcohol use is a tricky one.
      It's right up there with nudity and a few other things that aren't the hardest to paper over but can be very difficult. I mean famously we had the "shadow realm" on the 4kids dub of Yu-Gi-Oh!. As much as I love to crap on them I have to say that was an absolutely brilliant way to work around not being able to technically "kill" characters. And then of course on the opposite side of that spectrum you have the classic sent to another dimension from the early dubs of DBZ. I still think it's funny how characters in The '80s and '90s couldn't use kill or similar terminology she had a lot of characters even the bad guys saying things like "destroy them" or things of that nature. It's so funny to me because children's TV is always been a tightrope walk. They always want to see how far they can take it before there's pushback. Of course even on cable they don't really seem to even try to keep a lot of this stuff anywhere near close to the original.
