- a simple question with a very complicated answer, there is no satisfying single answer at the end of this video, but I hope it will help you understand the complexities behind how best to position yourself for one of the most important activities you'll be doing during your day, your work. by getting this right, you will improve your concentration and performance. while no two rooms are alike, try your best and take a moment to look around you, feel the energy and environment around, and be sure you're sat in the best possible spot in your office!

seeing feng shui as "if someone were to attack me, would I see them coming? do I feel safe here?" is brilliant!!
And it doesn't have to be a literal attack, could just be a surprise visit or even the subconscious feeling of could there be someone?
Feng Shui goes back thousands of years - it honors our most primal perceptions and feelings. It helped me turn a bedroom I never felt comfortable in to one that is like a warm hug. I'm a big fan!
the same instinctual mechanism that drives the defense or the prey response, the fight or flight reflex, is at the foundation of so many complex upper emotions and mental states.
many people dont realize that they are instinctually more or less stressed by such subtle things as your position in a room.
@@Taolan8472 So true!
Having PTSD, I already gravitate towards that. Feng shui has really helped me figure out how to feel more comfortable and actually be able to function when I don't necessarily feel entirely safe
I feel attacked.
*rearranges furniture*
😂
😂
I have a guard cat so I can ignore the risk of getting attacked from behind.
But what if your cat turns on you?
@@doyouguysnothavephones8967 lmao that's a valid argument
Your cat will attack you from behind
@@lizhutchinson697850x before any outside threats get near
I always felt vulnerable if my back isnt against a wall while working. feng shui helped me understand that i really am not a fan of being attacked😂
i feel the same way! i even double checked that my door is locked when im working just to rest my paranoid self 😂
I used to have a desk facing the wall and I put a little hand mirror on the desk so I could see behind me at all times. It made me feel safer.
Feng Shui is the most interesting topic I don't need at the moment, but I still want to learn about it. I'll need it in the future anyways
GREAT video with all kinds of scenarios and considerations. I have a similar little square office like this. I placed the desk in command, for sure - but out my window is, yep, a BIG CONCRETE WINGWALL. Despite this, though, I can still see the sky and sunlight, so I added good energy outside to improve the view! The wall now has lattice work with green ivy covering it, there are bird feeders and a solar water fountain. The cats like to sit in the window, as well. So now I am in the command position, receiving opportunities or aware of attackers that come in from my door (usually my spouse, trying to steal my chocolate) and great energy from my window view.
What about arranging a desk and a bed? Will the bed impact the optimal position of the desk and vice versa?
I will have that exact problem in a couple months. Very interested to see the answer so I can optimize my room.
Yes. Here it becomes about priorities. Is it more important to have the bed or the desk in the command position? Whatever is more important to you should go into the command position.
Yes!!!! I was going to ask this! I have to fit a wardrobe, bed and desk
@@LittlebellgirLau same!
Yes! I was just going to ask the same thing.
Next level: get a desk with round corners so chi flows nicely
Get one of those U shaped tables like in kindergartens so you can have joyous energy and feel like you're the commander of a space ship.
@@Kikkatar. Yeeesssssss
@@Kikkatar. Whoa! I need that! Never seen such a desk. /off to serch for it
Thank you!
I love your Tipps and recommendations. It inspired me to finally renovate the last wall of my kitchen which I hated but had no ideas for.
I wish I could show you. Thank you for educating and giving such nice ideas 🎉
I have a super tricky floorplan. Every room feels like a disaster. Wanna have a look?
I feel like whoever designed my building ripped every page out of his book and wiped their butt with it 😭😭
All of your videos are great and helpful, but for me this was the most great and helpful of all. The explanation of the energy considerations make so much sense now!! Thank you!
1:15 and 2:42
I'm facing a similar situation right now with figuring out how to place my desk, except I realized my new bedroom is more cramped and putting a bed and the closet in the middle heavily limits how I can place my desk and rearrange my space. This video came at a good time.
similar place here, the corridor going straight to my room is very similar to my room, and I had been considering putting the desk in the corner away from the door and this only proves that I should do it like that
Can you do more studio/open floorplan 1 bed apartments? Where you have to have your kitchen, eating space, living room, and work desk all in the same room?
Same same
My biggest brain moment: making a space divider and now I have a little bedroom
In my old house I had space to hang a small mirror in my kitchen. I just startle easily. But if you feel like that too, check for inexpensive or magnetic mirrors when it's 'back to school/dorm' time, I've had good luck with that. Love ya Cliff
This is so helpful. Why don’t more people know about this.
This is great! We need your Feng Shui genius in our lives! Would love to see a few examples of real life spaces that you think have really good Feng Shui energy so we can see what it should look like when it is good.
Loving the longer videos. Great explanations 🎉😊
0:06 bro why do you have a plan of my room?
It's a common room layout
@@hmyesmoment1683 😁
Thank you for suggesting the mirror, it makes such a huge difference!
Such a great description. i understood exactly what you meant. Thank you!
Thank you very much for all the tips. Very helpful. 🙏
I've been waiting for this!! Good to know my intuitions were correct and my desk is in a great spot 😉
right. moved my desk. thank you. now looking for bookshelf placement tips. 😊
You showed an example like my office and I'm pleased to say I got it correct 🎉
I wish I could put my desk like this! I can really feel that this is so true, even without knowing anything about feng shui, it feels weird to not have something behind me to support / protect me, but I never had the words for it
But after seeing this video I realise my desk is still in the best position that’s possible :)
That artwork behind you with the buildings in blue and pink is beautiful! Would you mind sharing the name of the artist?
Andrew Mockett!
I was thinking I disagreed on the best spot because I was prioritizing keeping an eye on the door, but then realized I subconsciously agreed with you 😅 When I started my job, I got to pick between a desk facing the wall with a peripheral view of the door or the desk facing the window with my back to the door. I picked the window with the nice view and good energy. Feng Shui knows best 😂
This is almost exactly my home office. I'm glad that I chose the best position for my desk intuitively. 😎
I like diagonals. Desk in diagonally in left lower corner, the desk facing the rest of the room and window. if small window, desk on wall between window and door, but the chair is toward the wall, desk facing outwards to see door and window, but maintain security behind back.
Thank you for this again, I removed an attachment to my desk so I could put it in the real command position as in the first example. Though the whole door and that wall is made of glass, I feel a lot less exposed and I don't have to turn around to check if someone is there. Fortunately it is a relatively calm corridor but there is some traffic happening sometimes.
can someone explain to me why are we assuming that we're going to be attacked when the door is open like what is going on in this house??
in some of the other videos he mentions it's bad to have your back facing windows incase you get attacked by monkeys lol
its dark humor lol
It's humor. And/or he has a cat. My cat loves to run up to me and smack me out of nowhere when she wants to play. Literally I get attacked in my own home.
My new office (in an office building in a suite of offices) is very similar to the small window option.
I have an L shaped desk. It will go in the “dark corner” but I have a lamp on my desk. This is both the best option feng shui wise and just the practicality. I am putting a plant near the window as well.
2:15 this is exactly the setup my boss had to switch to recently (no windows in the room and it's about half the size of that room. Split it in half vertically essentially) for the office/washroom (food service and the sinks are in the office...) I told her this exact same thing thanks to your tutelage :) Unfortunately her boss wants it that way so she's kind of screwed.
This I why I have a “Please Knock” sign on my door. I absolutely want to have my desk in front of the window, but I’m easily startled 🤣
Feng sui helped me with the placement of my two desk, wardrobe and bed. The door and window is exactly like in the video.
I place the bed next to the window so I can catch the early sun, see the door and also because I don't want my electronics exposed under the sun (window to the East)
The desk go next to the wall, I can see the entrance, turn right to enjoy the sun from the window and have my back against a second desk so I can just turn my chair and have access to another work surface.
The wardrobe is placed between my bed and desk, giving me easy access to all my stuff such as documents and personal items.
Feng shui once again being tactical interior design mixed with eastern mysticism. Love it.
Hey man you should do a review of style theories episode on organizing your closet. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it.
My friend just rearranged her room, so I sent her this video. 😊
Thank you
3:13 omg thank you so much, my bedroom looks just like this and I'm trying to figure out how to fit a desk area in there and rearrange everything relatively comfortably. Its also so dark and ugly in most of the room, and even the window only provides a little light (though better than nothing). Well, I also have a small closet in the way that changes things a bit more, but idk I think that is the closest decent it can get. I still dont like the feeling of the desk facing the wall, but I think its likely it'll end up in that space so maybe gonna try out different layouts if I get the chance to see what the other ones are like. Cause I have some other ideas of how to angke the desk but, it just might make the space feel too small and cluttered though.
Speaking of desk placement, what would you say would an optimized open office space look like? (From small startup to large corporate) I really like your videos! Made me feel changing something about my living room/work space to the better.
I LOVE THIS GUY❤😂❤😂❤
hi cliff! could you do a short clip of let’s say if we have both a sofa + a study desk in the same room? which should we prioritise then? (i love sitting at the sofa to do work tho 🥲)
I have that exact room layout with the desk, door, and big window, slight difference is my bed is in the room as well and I have a small closet adjacent to my door (on the same wall).
I wonder what the best position would be, I have my desk facing the north wall, with the door on its left and the window on the right. My bed is on the opposite wall, laying across the south wall (feet facing the closet).
I hope that makes sense, I know you usually require people to pay for your advice so I’m happy to hear from the community whenever they are free :)
Thanks man, now I'm afraid even to place a table in my room :D.
I really love your videos and it is difficult to find insight like yours. Do you have any favorite books? Course? Or do you teach?
Wonder how you feel about L-shaped desks, considering they make the viewing angles aspect a bit more complicated.
My Living room is L shaped, has one wall of windows facing west, a door on the east to my kitchen which has a big window minimally obscured by my fridge freezer. The main door is on the same wall as the kitchen. All my power and Ariel sockets are on the same wall as my doors. They didn’t think it through in the 50s when it was built. ☺️
Thank you very much for this video! I know it's much to ask, but how does feng shui impact on an outdoor landscaping? I don't live in a flat and I have a small garden I'd like to "Feng Shui it up" :)
Rite on. Yes. Very complicated
I'm in a situation at work where two of the walls are full-length drawers and cabinets (no way to put a desk against them), one wall is mostly a long window and is opposite the door, and the last wall has the door opening onto it and is backing the window. Ultimately I chose to put my desk on the last one (so I can see out the window and down the hallway through the door), but I can't help but feel like there's a better feng shui answer, even given my limited options.
I think the command position (& the one on the wall when you can't position it in the middle) are the only ones that feel right
For L shaped desks do you need to consider the side part as well when placing the desk around the room?
THIS
6:00 is basically exactly my office (which is in fact also my living room) and i just protect myself from attacks by having a large dog at my feet!
What I learned from this video:
Put your desk in the command position and buy a new house for your stuff
ok finally I have an answer to my stupid room layout. I will turn my desk 180 degrees now.
Also, do you have an apartment tutorial where you could suggest a layout for a combined couch set up and desk set up in the living together 🥺💛
5:18 is basically my situation but there is also a window behind the desk on the back wall as well.
Unfortunately I have a bed too big for my room that tales up space behind my desk, that sits horizontally on the back wall.
I also have like 3 computer desks. I have a small room and I hate it. I also hate my bed for being too big. I actually thought about dismantling it and sleeping on the floor lol.
I'm currently setting up an office/bedroom combo. I'd love to send you a video when I'm all finished to hear your thoughts
youtube pls add more of this
Hey Dear Modern! My living room has a couch, loveseat and a single chair. It came as a 3-piece living room set. Could you make a video on how to feng shui this setup?!
I wish I could buy those little models
I have the alignment of small window directly in line with the doorway and a long hall and I have a cat so i dont want to close the door completely. So I bought a almost floor length noren curtain, the cat can come and go and my roommates cant see directly into the room (and to my desk, that is placed along the wall directly between the door and window). the room feels totally different, and way more exposed, when i pull it up!
I would have thought you’d put the desk with the short side directly side to the left wall, so you can see both door and window without being too close to the window. Can do or need to add Feng Shui proofing?
I just rearranged my desk so I can see the main door in my living room and I put some big plants behind me for the second door 😅
But I will try a mirror too ❤
I haven't been watching long enough, so maybe this has been answered, but what about placing the desk on a diagonal on the lower left corner of the room, offering you safety from the door and a direct view outside the window no matter how big or small it is?
i might have missed your video on this, but
what if i have a desk AND a bed in the same room? which of the two do i place in the command position?
Can you please suggest which way a bed should face in the southern hemisphere if you were designing an ideal house?
this is the new ochem drawing molecules
i love taht he always assume that someone is gonna attak me, cause thats how i feel lol
hahahahahahah I love when say people come and attack you hahahaha ... Pleaseeee I need to learn to place mirrors in an aparment
I have my home office in a small room (2x3m) on the north west side of the house.
Is it better to move it to the room (3x4m) on the south east side of the house?
My bedroom door entrance and window are on adjacent walls with my closet on the opposite wall of the window. What to do, Cliff?? What to do?
Make a video about the same room, but with a bed and a small window opposite the door, please.
My room is just like this with smaller window. We have L shape desk positioned at door wall and full wall. What if i put mirror on the door wall to reflect window?
I’m feeling a little smug that my desk is in the right place for my situation. 😊
I work in a mental health clinic. For safety reasons we are encouraged to arrange our desks so that we can be the first out of the room if a client becomes belligerent (so that the client can't block our exit and trap us in the room). This eliminates placing the desk in the usual command position as a option. I was wondering what recommendations you might have for this scenario. Is there such a thing as "inverse command position"?
Can you do this one with a corner desk?
what about if the door is perpendicular to the window, with a closet along the wall opposite from the window?
Completely agree with the first command position! However, I'd worry about Batman crashing thru the window & messing up my desk. 😁 "🦇,,
This is such good timing cuz I’ve been re designing my study for two people! But nonetheless I can’t follow feng shui I cuz the space is too small for two people. So danger come at me!
THIS IS SO MY ROOOM but the problem is i have a queen bed where do i put it?
3:52 This is exactly what I use in my office. The setup of my computer + machine just doesn't warrant the command position or the door/window view. I'm in the middle of the hallway style room, I'm facing a wall, with the door and window each on my left and right side.
what if we had the door and the window on the same wall, but you cannot float your desk? which one is "better"?
I feel like I have to learn more about fend-shui cause if I sleep in the “wrong direction”, facing the room in my case, I get a lot of sleep paralysis, which s*cks, but if I sleep facing the wall it barely happens…so weird!
What if your office is long and thin? Like 6.5m long by 2.5m wide. There is glass on all 4 sides - three of those windows face outside and the other window is facing onto a living room. There is a door from the living room in the middle of the long narrow room and a door to outside on the end of the opposite long wall.
This is real, it's my office :D
I watch these videos trying to work out how best to make my office work.
i'm curious: If the door is barely used (I've a piece of furniture in front of it with caster), it's always locked and it open on an desert corridor of the flat;
how this influence the desk position ( chair back facing the door) as nobody is expected to enter from it ?
Moving into a new house next week and this answered my questions! Thank you
my bedroom/office is very long, very long, and i have two corner windows but they're high up and small so i can't see much but trees, i have two doors in the opposite corner, one to the living room and one to the shared bathroom, it's difficult to arrange
Was that LEGO at the end?? 😁
6:12 command position :)
I put my desk in the door wall but I also have a bed and 2 wall mounted tvs one monitor and one TV.
Hey Cliff where is the best place to secure a high anxiety dog? I need to make an indoor pen for him because we don't have a separate place to keep him safe. Our dining room is attached to the kitchen with our main entry back door and a window. Directly across is the archway to the living room. On the back wall in the corner is a door that goes to my office ( was once the carport). Thinking in the corner next to the door and window but wondering if this might be too much energy movement for him.
The office door is next to the archway at a right angle.
Glare ads a new element
In some of these cases, I'm wondering if a rotated command position would make sense. Like facing the window, but alongside the bottom wall. He didn't mention that... Is that a dumb idea?
What if you need to fit 2 desks in the same space with the large window?
What about open concept, loft apartment?
What if your office desk needs 2 monitors and there's a bunch of cables everywhere on the ground because it's in the middle of the room?
“People can you know, can come and attack you.” Family turns to me, “Bruhhh where’s your office?”
“I knew you were a secret agent!”
