Installing An AMERISTAR Heat Pump Package Unit...Are They Any Good??

  • This day was HOT!! I’m replacing a 17 year old Heil heat pump package unit with a new 14 SEER Ameristar. Though this was a fairly simple HVAC replacement, filming in 105 degree weather, by myself made it a job to remember. I think it turned out pretty good! What do you guys think??

Here in Canada 🇨🇦 well alberta anything over 6 ft has to be in conduit. Thats why pre-made whips are 6 ft. Anything longer has to be hard piped.

When you strap conduit ALWAYS put the screw through the strap hole under the Conduit it will help support it I just noticed in the video you screwed through the strap hole above the conduit on the wall

Thanks for doing this video. A lot of us don't realize how dangerous it is working in hot environments. I passed out and had to lie down inside my customer's living room for a while to recover. Techs out there please take necessary precautions.

  • @straightshooter8443
    @straightshooter8443 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Super clean and look great. The customer should be pleased that you took extra steps to give a quality install. Although, when you set that unit on the concrete pad I was screaming “No!!!! No sir!!!!” But then you put the vibration isolation under the unit.
The reason I was screaming is this is the first video of yours that I have watched. Time for some binge watching. I was a tech in my dads business for about 10 years. I was doing an install in an attic on a 105* day in Oklahoma with about 85% humidity. I was thinking, man there’s gotta be an easier way to make a living. Went back to school. Got my mechanical engineering degree. Now I design the buildings... in an A/C office. Did that for 28 years. Gotta love it. Great job.

Great thoughts on keeping cool and protective clothing for the heat index temperatures in mid TN. Glad you took the time to measure up an offset for the flashing. Most companies would just install a prefab 3 sided flashing. I made a custom 4 piece flashing because I've worked with sheet metal and to keep the critters out of my crawlspace. I can tell you have pride in your work.

I am a retired (3 years ago after 45 years in the biz) HVACR tech, mostly did supermarket refrig. All the stores we worked in we also serviced the HVAC from 100 ton units to 3 ton units and split systems. Your installs are top notch, clean, tight, level, clean and your knowledge and service skills are spot on. And you do this all solo. Wish your business was in my area, I'd hook you up with my whole community!!. Keep up the good work and the videos.

I really like the look of the ameristar split systems. My only beef is the ambient and coil temperature sensors go out like they’re going out of style. I’ve had some out of range right out of the box. The company I work for sold them as base model units. We now sell RunTru and they seem okay the outdoor unit cabinets are just comically huge for little is inside. Great video and a good looking install !

I really like the 1” EMT for the high voltage wiring, it looks really clean. To be honest, I would have just strapped some carflex to the wall but now that I see how much better the metal conduit looks, I think I’m gonna try your way next time. Btw, I’m in Eastern North Carolina and last week was brutal. We had 110 heat indexes every day except Friday. I changed a compressor and a reversing valve in an old Goodman split, don’t ask me why but they didn’t want to replace the unit, and I was really struggling with the heat. I had absolutely no shade the whole time and even though I drank over a gallon of water, I kept getting light headed and feeling like I was gonna pass out. I got it though and the unit is cooling like a champ. Stay safe out there Zack.

A couple of tips to help you out...
    1. Use 181 foil tape for duct "LINING", then pull up the insulation over it and zip tie it.. No need in wasting tape on duct insulation you will never see again for 10yr+ or that would have zero effect on it.
    2. Loose the whole solid conduit.. Stick with the liquid-tite stuff, easier to work with, less expensive, and you can make the runs look just as good, i mean you had to use a piece anyways, might as well had run it all the way to the box really.
    3. Sealants need to go man. Stick with the 181 tape and a good squeegee, will last 20yr+, only use sealants when you have to, mainly UL 181 Listed mastic in a bucket is best on those "HAVE TO" situations.. That rubberized tape stuff un-sticks, (TRUST ME), it will come undone over time especially when cold... Just a 181 foil tape approved for duct and you can use just a regular foil non 181 for "DRESSING UP" everywhere else that isn't critical and it's super cheap, like 11.00 per roll 3".. GET YOU SOME SQUEEGEES!!!, most time Distributors give them for free with their tape sales so there isn't no reason no to have a bunch in ya truck...
4 "S LOCK" is your friend! I noticed on your plenum you didn't use any in the corners, which makes it difficult in getting screws to start or secure even self tapping ones. S-lock also help flanges seal better by design as well not to mention stiffening up the edges giving you something to "BITE ON" for screws, etc.
I applaud you trying to make it all it can be, i really do... Go with RUUD/RHEEM brand, it is a FAR SUPERIOR product especially on work-ability and even aesthetics than Ameristar hell even Trane/A.S ever thought of being! I mean hell, that one made it through a Tornado and only twisted a suction line, and even then it kept running didn't it?!? Super easy to work on, and they improve it yearly now with bolt on TXV's for outdoor units.
Oh yeah, speaking on that video, man don't waste your time in heating up pipe when you can take a pipe cutter, you seen it ignite when it popped apart burning all that old oil that was in it. Use a pipe cutter when ya can, a lot cleaner after brazing and a lot faster also. Not to mention you can wipe the oil out before reassembling the new pipe together this way.
Those tips right there will save ya time, heartache, money, and still give you the same quality as you have in this one.
    Adam

Dude, i don’t know, there’s just something about watching your quality of work that I enjoy...it’s hard to find someone that’s been in the business as long as you that doesn’t take shortcuts everywhere they can; I believe that’s why so many good techs are called back out after another tech has already serviced...I’ve decided, at the age of 45, to go back to school for HVAC/R, and have two semesters left before my associates degree...I know it’s a young mans field of work, but you continue to make it look like something I’m excited and will be proud to be doing...keep up the amazing videos....maybe you need to do a sponsor financed week apprenticeship drawing in the future
