    What are you thoughts on modern bareknuckle (BKB, BKFC) and how classical pugilistic tactics could/should apply? Sounds like a video.......

      Good question.
      It seems to me that modern bare knuckle boxing is a lot closer to gloved boxing than actual bare knuckle boxing from 130 years ago.
      When I say "bare knuckle", I'm not talking about boxing with wrapped knuckles, I mean actual bare knuckle like the BKFC which has bare, not wrapped, knuckles.
      Almost no modern bare knuckle fighters punch with a vertical fist (which is why so many of them, especially ex-(gloved) boxers, break bones in their hand in the first round)..you just can't punch the same way you do with gloves on and not expect to damage your hands which is why all bare knuckle boxers up until gloves were introduced, punched to the head with a vertical or diagonal fist so they didn't break their hands and could fight next week.
      Also most of modern bareknuckle boxers use a high tight guard, which works well with gloves, but leaves holes with bare knuckle fighting as well as the fighter with the high tight guard can be punched through their guard causing damage (which is why 17th and 18th century boxers kept their hands lower, chin low and relied to stopping punches before they were thrown (grappling, holding), intercepting (parries, long blocks, etc) and by using footwork to evade the attack.....except Daniel Mendoza, according to this video which is puzzling to me
      The stance described in Mendoza's book is different to what is suggested in this video.

    Modern boxers do it for a living too, a much better living on average I'm sure than boxers of old. They mostly turn their fist, so my question is why? Why would the new boxers do that if it's not as good for power? It it's not anatomical that could make sense because of gloves, but surely it's better for power.

    • @uexkeru
      @uexkeru 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      One reason for the turned over fist is that it assists with defense by helping to get the shoulder hunched up to close off one line to the chin. This is a true corkscrew punch and not everybody understands it anymore. Another is that the twist adds a little extra motion that's like ripping (and originally was meant to cut the face) and it can extend all the way into a palm-down vertical fist cross or overhand.
      But many novice boxers in gyms are just being taught to turn the fist palm down. So this detracts from their power because they're winging their elbow out instead of making it a short sharp rip at the end of the chain. Some time spent on vertical fist punching would help them to stop winging their elbows when they punch, but when the fighter is experienced I wouldn't say one way is objectively better than another, it's more about how it fits into that fighter's whole gameplan

      Vertical punching to the head is for bare knuckle fighting as it helps protect the hands from getting broken (as the impact area on the fist is larger as contact is made with the middle two or the lower three knuckles...as opposed to a horizontal bare knuckle punch which focuses all the impact on usually just one knuckle, maybe two...and also, a horizontal BK punch, if it partially misses the head and the pinkie knuckle connects then it's easy to break a hand bone), when gloves were introduced (to protect the hands and cut faces less) , they worked out that a twist from vertical to horizontal on impact helped cut the opponent (because the padding prevented bone breakages)...and there are several other reasons why bare and gloved boxing has different fist positions.

    Is this the early version of peek a boo?😂

    • @TommyMooreww2combatives
      @TommyMooreww2combatives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You could argue that, but head movement would have been more front to back as opposed to lateral or led by the waist like modern Peek a Boo

    • @chaxologist2024
      @chaxologist2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely the head movement with that stance is both front to back and lateral since his footwork may have been circular in which after he leans back, he would return from a different angle to evade a head punch feint that sets up a body punch.
