    i could see this as the predecessor for peekaboo style, dempsey roll, and shoulder roll.

      @@PugilisticusBritannicus the crouching attitude style could have been the grappling version for Mike's peekaboo. it could be a great combo for mma to mix those two

    i think a mix of middle school and new school would be best for a real fight

    Really enjoyed this video, you explained the different attitudes very clearly. I think I prefer the upright attitudes but I can definitely see the old school attitude being very effective in a fight and so I'll probably practice using a mix of the different stances just to get familiar with them.

    Did the new school style pretty much continue into the days when the London Prize Ring rules replaced Broughton's rules? Say Sayers v Heenan.

    • @PugilisticusBritannicus
      @PugilisticusBritannicus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The new school was squarely in that era - the LPRR were originally introduced in 1837 and continued to be used until the 1880s

      You probably know that a common 18th century style was to stand with the lead hand high in front of the face and guard hand across the stomach (kind of the opposite of modern boxing.) Have you tried this, and if so what do you think of it as a style?

    Interesting to see maces and clubs in the background. Did pugilists of Britain use them for training as well?

      Scientific pugilism by my friend Dan Kanagie is good - brief but covers the basics. Otherwise, you are going to have to consult the old manuals from the 18th and 19th centuries

    Interesting im training kungfu and boxing and i see the difference between street and ring. Also its interesting to see that boxing has similar posture like in kungfu. They come from a similar idea
    I noticed the old boxing style are outdated. U cant have a close guard like boxing in the street and u have to punch with wrist alignment like u said. But if ur in low stances and flat footed you are to slow and it consume a lot more energy.
    The todays mma style are the best because they incorporate the fast foot movement and grappling

      I think that pugilism works in a street setting, as it is direct and hard hitting. You don't want to throw kicks, as you can get taken down and you don't want to initiate grappling, as there may be more than one person attacking you.
      I have taught Muay Thai for close to two decades and train in Jiu Jitsu, so I certainly recommend learning more than one style of fighting.

    I wonder if a modern muay thai stance would work well here, it seems like a variation of the old school attitude you show
