If a caller said: "We have no home, $280K in savings, make $175K per year and are looking to purchase a house worth around $350k" Dave Ramsey would congratulate them and tell them to go for it on a 15 yr fixed. I don't see how this is any different.
We've been working from home for over a year. My wife's desk is in a part of our L-shaped rec room. I just don't use the room when she's working. You make it work. You don't go into debt just for that.
Hey neighbor, fellow Springfield Missourian here! Going from working in a professional office to working from home can take a toll on you mentally. I enjoyed working in the office & having a different social group outside of the home. I think she almost needs a refreshed workspace. I was feeling the struggle of newly working from home, and was working from the kitchen table as well. I went to Home Depot and bought a work bench on wheels and parked it in the sunniest corner of our living room. When we have company come over I roll my desk into the back bedroom. With her working from home on that income, you could possibly save as much as your can for the time being, then build when prices go down so she can get the layout she wants. We built in the Willard area, best decision we made. Yes we have a mortgage, but we enjoy our space and the peaceful scenery of our property. There are a lot of great towns around Springfield within a 20-30 minute drive. Also there are several excellent programs the kids could go to during the summer. Just a thought, good luck to you all! 😊.
Sheesh, these comments. Working from home, at the kitchen table, with kids is hard. And housing prices are crazy. Not unreasonable to want a different house
Don't pay for a mortgage... but go pay for an office which will never be yours. Terrible advice. They make enough to roll their current home into a better bigger house and still have minimal/ insignificant about of debt.
Agree with the shed option. you can get some lovely 'garden rooms' for a few thousand. Kit it out with electric and furniture. That way you have a separate quiet space and can watch the kids if they play in the garden.
I’m in the same situation. I decided to get a “she-shed” for $2,400 and it’s decked out... 😂 simple fix plus if my situation changes and I don’t need a home office anymore I can use it for other things or sell it... some people just don’t think...
It was a 150k home when they bought it that’s not that big of a house. They have 280k if they sell this house and a 175k income which is a lot. They can definitely and should if they want to move up in house
I turned my sun room into an office and my house is small so if I can find room they can too. I’m sure they have an extra bedroom or walk-in closet or even a large room that’s not used that often they can put temporary wall barriers up to create an office. Do they have a space in the back yard they can put up a little shed and add heat and a/c to? Those portable fire places work really well.
Part of the problem is that they are using mom as a child care provider during work hours. Just because she's working from home doesn't mean she can also look after the kids because... SHE'S WORKING!
Mortgage rates are near zero, there's no reason they can't upgrade their house and go into a little mortgage debt (assuming they get fair price for their current house). Telling him to rent an office instead of using the rental payment for a mortgage is foolish in my opinion
They make $175K/yr, are debt free, and can't afford a bigger house? What have they been doing with their money??? Does private school really cost that much??? Dave missed a big one here.

She wants a bigger house and most likely is making the bulk of the money. So, the decision is in turn gonna go her way if she wants the bigger home. And she doesn't care going back into debt doing it.
I'm not a relationship expert, but from what I've heard Dave and others talk about, there is no "bulk of the money". Their income is shared between the two of them, it's not like the one making more money gets a bigger say.
Hey a nice 10 or 12 for square shed, finish the inside, add electric and a hard wire connection, or good wireless access point. Put in a heat exchange for AC and heat, and boom, she has a private office.
This is just one example of how things are breaking down. The first 10 years of a marriage is when the potential for divorce is 50%. If you can make it past about 10 years the odds start to swing in your favor. But women tend not to stay with a man if she out earns him, especially by much.
Working from home full time without the proper set up is miserable. I've been there, I can see the wife's point of view. Dave's solution: go rent an office for the same or more amount than you would pay for the mortgage on an upgraded house - but at least you're "debt free". Never mind that you will pay thousands to rent an office and at the end of the lease, you have NOTHING. This caller indicated that working from home is not a temporary condition. So what if you have to take on a small mortgage to get what you want. Happy wife, happy life.
There's something else going on for sure though. A quick search of prices in his immediate price range in their area reveals plenty of large places for around 250. They'd be able to sell, move and have some left over for a full office kit out.
Honestly for 170k they should just buy a better house. This isn't a bunch of broke people on 40k per year. They could buy an 800k house and still do perfectly fine.
Did he say that the callers wife, an HR consultant, can work out of starbucks. Wow. Either convert some room in their house into an office, like the garage, rent N office or get a new house. There should be a house somewhere at a similar price where she can have an office. If they want a more expensive house, they could save the money to expand their budget.
reminds me of a story of an opera singer whose side hustle was voice acting. She was recording a children's book in the closet when she accidentally got locked in.
You can work outside on a deck, patio, backyard, wherever for a change of scenery. Now if they BOTH decide that they want a new house, change the budget since $175k / year and a $280k paid for house could be a lot more house in 6-12 months.
I feel like they could do a lot of things to make the house they got work. Maybe make a space in the basement, a shed outside, a corner of a bedroom, etc. ALSO, what makes her think a bigger house is going to change the dynamic of kids bothering you while you're working from home? Lol.

@Lady Wharton so by that logic first time homebuyers shouldn't buy a house until they can pay cash?
So...instead of buying a whole new house maybe do some renovations to the current one? Add on an office towards the back of the house or convert the garage into an office space...that's what my Mom and Dad did years ago when my Mom started her business at home...
Consider re-modeling/re-configure the current house?
160k back then they are probably in a gehtto neighborhood
I bought my house in '07 for $166k. I do not live in the ghetto. I live in a suburb community with highly sought after schools. It's a twin, so not a large house, but nowhere near a ghetto.
Make the kids share a bedroom. Instant office!
@@johndone8045 no house costing 280k in the ghetto. You sound dumb
Why is it so bad to want a new home with an office space? As long as you don’t go into debt and pay cash for the house, why not? Sounds like they have the money and I don’t think it’s a lame excuse to want a home office.
This is a good time to sell a good house but a bad time to buy a good house. Pick your poison.
Exactly
I agree. I've thought about selling my house cause I will get a pretty good chunk of change from it. But then the question is, where do I live?? LOL All the extra I make off of the house won't make up for extra I have to pay for another house cause they have all went up in price.
So he said that she can’t work because of the kids but he says we pay for private school ??? How are they home and attending school during the day.
It’s summer bro

^^^This.
Time for people to go back to the office.
She is a professional and contributing $$ to the family unit and you want her to operate from the kitchen table? I agree about creating a work environment that is healthy and productive.
Rent an office.
@Jarod Armstrong He said at the start that this would be permanent. WFH will be a MUCH bigger thing in the future.
They're called cloffices..& don't knock em till ya Pinterest em!

LOL. Some people do have a huge closet that they can use. At least use them for phone calls so the kids aren't bothering you while your on the phone.
I love how there’s always something to learn from watching these videos
It's a choice: Stay out of debt or go for a financier house. End of story.
Or save and pay cash.
@@Lon1001 With their income, saving to pay cash is very possible option. That's the option I would probably pick.
If the office would be rented for $500 for a decade, what is the problem putting that 500 into the house instead? It would most likely be returned in home price appreciation.
Yeah renting is a terrible idea. It's just a flease for a Mortgage.
If a caller said: "We have no home, $280K in savings, make $175K per year and are looking to purchase a house worth around $350k" Dave Ramsey would congratulate them and tell them to go for it on a 15 yr fixed. I don't see how this is any different.
No house versus already having a house - big difference.
We've been working from home for over a year. My wife's desk is in a part of our L-shaped rec room. I just don't use the room when she's working. You make it work. You don't go into debt just for that.
Get her a she shed for the backyard. She gets her own office space and you guys don’t have to move. Win win.
When you appreciate what you have then you can get out of debt. Pick a room that you can shut the door and be happy that you are home in your PJ’s
Being from Springfield, MO - I loved when Dave said that price is a nice house cause it's true lol
Don't pay for a mortgage... but go pay for an office which will never be yours. Terrible advice. They make enough to roll their current home into a better bigger house and still have minimal/ insignificant about of debt.
Anyone else feel like just because you are listening to Dave, you are getting richer?
Agree with the shed option. you can get some lovely 'garden rooms' for a few thousand. Kit it out with electric and furniture. That way you have a separate quiet space and can watch the kids if they play in the garden.
I’m in the same situation. I decided to get a “she-shed” for $2,400 and it’s decked out... 😂 simple fix plus if my situation changes and I don’t need a home office anymore I can use it for other things or sell it... some people just don’t think...
A paid for home?!? She’s unbelievable 🤯
It was a 150k home when they bought it that’s not that big of a house. They have 280k if they sell this house and a 175k income which is a lot. They can definitely and should if they want to move up in house
It's not her it's him.
They make 175k per year. Sale the house and put an additional 30-50k on a new house instead of wasting money on renting office space
I don't understand why if you pay for private school then they are in school most of the work day. Only 2-3 hours they are home.
They are using that as an excuse to get a bigger fancier house.
People use kids for every excuse for everything in life.
Private school isn't year round so there's that. Their private school may also still be operating online.
Part of the problem is that they are using mom as a child care provider during work hours. Just because she's working from home doesn't mean she can also look after the kids because... SHE'S WORKING!
I see a problem here that I wont mention.
Since no one said it yet
Dave: Sell the wife
😂🤣 Can you deduct the depreciation from "princess syndrome" on your taxes?
Ding ding ding ding.
$175K/year and debt free. Build an office.
I work from home in my bedroom. My friend gave me a desk and I make it work. And I live in a 2 bedroom apartment.
Do you have noisy kids?
Mortgage rates are near zero, there's no reason they can't upgrade their house and go into a little mortgage debt (assuming they get fair price for their current house). Telling him to rent an office instead of using the rental payment for a mortgage is foolish in my opinion
Daves advise is brain damaged
In uncertain times, you try to be out of debt than to go into bigger loans.
They make $175K/yr, are debt free, and can't afford a bigger house? What have they been doing with their money??? Does private school really cost that much??? Dave missed a big one here.
We bought a 4BR house, and one BR was "half width", essentially it was a big closet with a window, and *perfect* as my office.
Very poorly handled call. They should've immediately asked about income. They act like he's broke. Renting an office is the dumbest thing I've ever heard
I totally agree! I don't know why you guys could not see. Just rent an office space that's such an easy solve. I would never go back and get another mortgage to stay in your house and this is the way to make it work.
I love you Ramsey!! Bravo!!
I hate people who are so blessed to make 175k a year but don’t know how to manage their money smh it’s almost like they are just flexing
Build a mini office shed.
Can they not add on their existing house? Add a 10x10 room... they EASILY make the money to do that.
@@saulgoodman2018 it can take months to move... find a contractor who is expensive but can make it happen quickly then.. always options then selling the entire home and uprooting life lol.
Shed, garage, basement. Think outside the box.
All this criticism about her not needing work space. Yes she bloody well does. You can’t work with children in the same area. Impossible. But idk why they can’t rearrange their bedroom or something
Get a small insulated shed and run power to it. Then add a small electric heater that also has AC
Throw a couple of walls up and make an office

This is just one example of how things are breaking down. The first 10 years of a marriage is when the potential for divorce is 50%. If you can make it past about 10 years the odds start to swing in your favor. But women tend not to stay with a man if she out earns him, especially by much.
Divorce.
Desk in the bedroom??? Office space in the garage? Buy a shed plop a heater/ac box and put it in the back yard??
Sorry but if she's making half the income it's a big deal for her to have a home office.
The answer to this question is simple; why did he have to call DR?
He can turn a shed into an office space in the back yard
I dont like this advice. He could move up in home for the price of renting an office
170k with no mortgage save up to pay the difference with cash, build an addition, build a shed/garage and work out of that.
Just set up a small desk in the bedroom.
I think I’ve been shadow banned, comments not appearing or getting replies plz respond
Dave ... straight talk no chaser!
Lol.
Never again........
Convert the garage to an office dude..
That is not the problem though. She is BORED..be careful!!
Upgrade the freaking HOUSE dude. People cant think for themselves and need "advices" for everything. Mortgage should not even be considered debt. Its an awesome investment.
Yes, mortgage is a great investment
They can't afford and office because of private school but they can afford a mortgage?
I work from home and have a desk in my bedroom where I can close the door for quiet phone time. Rearrange a room to put a small desk behind a door. Problem solved.
The children are at school all day long so how is that an issue? Tell her employer to pay for a rental office.
There’s plenty of solutions to this problem.
How much more is need to purchase the house they want. At there income it seems like they could save the additional amount in a short period of time. Or add a building they is wired, heated, etc.. that she can work from. I did this for my wife and it was not very expensive.
I don’t understand why so many haters on this thread. They make good money.....they have good jobs, I don’t know why having a 280k house is that big of a deal. They aren’t buying the moon
Exactly! A $280k house is CHEAP by me. Not extravagant on their salary AT ALL. Plus, they live in MO, where they get so much more for their money than most states.
I have some relatives in this situation................... believe me, they should be happy they have got a decent house right now, in these times.
