    The voice acting in SH2 seems 100% on purpose. It reminds me of a David Lynch film where the delivery seems surreal and dream like.

      Beside of James, Laura and Eddie (which are literally voiced by a dude, his daughter and his buddy), Monica Horgan (voice of Mary/Maria) actually did a great job voicing two different character, alternating between the two flawlessly in the prison scene. Even Donna Burke (voice actor of Angela) who got roasted badly in the SH HD Collection press event, later voiced the SH3 main antagonist and her latest gig is voicing MGSV's iDroid and singing MGSV'S main theme.

      @@remisan7214 In the SH HD Collection press announcement, I remember that Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (the new voice for Mary and Maria) talked about the sub-par voice acting of the original, specifically bringing up Angela's "lost?" bit, and everyone chuckled.

    I feel like almost the entire genre of horror is just people trying to recapture the absolute spark of brilliance that was this game. There are so many horror game tropes I always thought were dumb and did not understand why people insisted on holding onto them on their games that were done so well in Silent Hill it made me realise why people so rarely discard them.
    The other Silent Hills may be decent horror games, but Silent Hill 2 specifically is an absolute masterpiece that could only exist in an environment of complete creative freedom.

    Spoilers and Opinion warning!!
    I always considered the abstract daddy appearing in the hotel was James Taking on Angela’s trauma. James seeing first hand what the consequences of doing what he desired, forcing himself into a woman, would cause. It was just compounding his guilt after he helped Angela but ultimately wouldn’t ever be able to save her because the abstract daddy was never his to fight.

    • @SquabsMcGee
      @SquabsMcGee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also masahiro didn’t decide where monsters went more often than not, it might have been one of those things of not having time or space to implement a new monster. It would be to the game designers to explain.

    • @terminalillness1542
      @terminalillness1542 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I would personally rationalize as part of James and Angelas' own versions of Silent Hill overlapping some. Considering that, when James last sees her, it's in the hotel, and he can see a glimpse of what her particular Otherworld is like, I would assume that the Abstract Daddies are probably just another manner in which her world overlaps with his.
      That's my two cents, any way. Both explanations would make sense, IMO.

    • @wired4933
      @wired4933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that in Silent Hill, just like in real life, you meet others who are suffering and two worlds become one. The AD and the story of Angela are an incredibly well expressed depiction of what someone like Angela feels like. At the start, she's looking for her "Mama", in the graveyard. You can clearly tell, she's a bit distraught and not alright at all. Since she couldn't find her mother at the graveyard, she realises that she's all alone and nowhere to turn to. You meet her again, depressed and suicidal on the floor with a knife. You help her out, she leaves the room and with the AD depicting what happened to her in her childhood, we know why she's so broken. She has endured this all by herself, her mother proably dead for a longer time than the abuse was going on or maybe she couldn't take it and ended her own life. Either way, Angela is completely alone, broken and tired. We see her at the end on the stairs "for me, it's always like this", accepting her pain and giving in, embracing the flames. This is my opinion but I'm not the only one who appreciated the character of Angela because after all, this is a story about a surviver of CSA and it's important to make people aware of things like this happening, how awful it is being a child who has to suffer through horrors like this.

    Even the best person can hold the darkest aspects of themselves-
    A hero can solve problems, but a villain can’t easily solve their own problems
    But what about a hero who can save everyone else but themselves?
    I believe James Sunderland has redeemed himself greatly in the “true” ending of Silent Hill 2, but even now just seeing how monsters are just the repressed personalities, emotions, rage, etc. of ourselves really puts into perspective how we all should face our demons- guilt, regret, anguish, trauma, and especially RAGE

    Silent Hill is honest to goodness, one of the most daunting, terrifying, hellish experiences in entertainment history. Part of that is thanks to its sound effects, which are random, unpredictable, and worthy of a nightmare mental asylum. This is a fantasy based on reality, and not the other way around. I even felt mentally exhausted from having to listen to the sound effects in this series. Resident Evil is for babies, compared to silent hill.

    It's really interesting analizing the mosnters, bosses and subtle aspects of Silent Hill 2
    My take is not that he HAD an affair, since Silent Hill explores James' subconcious is more accurate to assume that he was heavingly considering it, being that the nurses are more defined in appearance that other type of monsters that are not a pile of barely femenin shapes(sans Pyramid Head or Maria) that also are there to resemble his frustrations against his wife and against himself. If James outright cheated on Mary the game would bluntly tell you outright which is not the case.
    While PH is his inner desire of self punishment for his crime and Maria his wish to just basically get a new more "perfect" Mary, is more likely to assume that he was about or was really considering it having an affair, but since he was trying too hard to be the good husband he never followed through, even though it just caused more frustration and pain.

    I finally got the chance to play the game as an adult and regret not playing it when I was younger. Time and the popularity of this game did soiled it for me where I don't find pyramid head scary since he's such a big icon, but nonetheless an amazing masterpiece

    Nah, the true hidden theme behind Silent Hill 2 is the traumatization of circumcision.

    I don't think SH2 has bad controls. Silent Hill 1 - 4 were absolutely amazing and in my opinion the best psychological horror games of all times.

    I love that you're using footage from LIQUIDSNAKEz28's movie edit of Silent Hill 2. I've recently discovered him not too long ago and his movie edits of the Silent Hill games are very amazing and unique. It was also interesting to see how different his movie edit of Silent Hill 2 was compared to Fungo's. The only downside is that, unlike Fungo, liquidsnakez28 used the HD collection versions of Silent Hill 2 & 3, something that even LIQUIDSNAKEz28 admitted weren't the best versions to use for gameplay footage, but thankfully it never ruined the experience, especially with his editing and combination of footage from other sources outside the game.

    The monster design in Silent Hill was great. Personally the Twin Victim from Silent Hill 4 terrified me.

    Pyramid Head should've stayed as a Silent Hill 2 exclusive monster. I mean it was James's monster....it didn't make sense to see him appear in other Silent Hills since it didn't make sense, but for the character of James....it had a purpose you know
