The sonic image was actually intended to be a funny easter egg in Japan. However when the game came America, they changed all of the music for sonic cd. In the Japanese version, the music is the japanese boss battle theme (which is happy and bubbly). However when they made the US version it got changed to the American boss battle theme (which is the weird and creepy one).
@Luuf Music aside, that image is still creepy as hell, I don't care if you had the Kirby theme song play over it, that image is still nightmare inducing.
I remember Adult Swim had an add for the Sonic social media stuff and at the end of it, there's actually a reference to the "Fun is Infinite" screen. What's weirder is that when they uploaded the add on TH-cam they changed the text to "Follow the clues".
Ah, the sound of death. It only happens when the consoles bios is corrupted or the console is frozen and the graphics card is trying to unfreeze or something
Mine would go blue screen then what sounds like a crowded place with lots of people talking, little bit after someone trying to yell over everyone to shut up.
I think a lot of what was considered "creepy" back then was the childhood ignorance of how computers and game consoles worked. Doing something "wrong", and having the system react in a completely "unexpected" way imparted a sense of mystery. This is especially true with error messages (no disk, unreadable disk, etc.).
The weird "screeching" on Zool is actually the CD player trying to read the binary data of the game as audio. The same thing happens with any other game, it's the same thing as shoving a program cassette into an actual cassette player.
The "guitar solo" kinda gives me the impression that it's supposed to be the sound of the CD ruining the disc. Like, as a kid I would imagine that as the sound of the CD's laser ripping into the game and destroying my save data.
It’s funny because the frequencies of the riffs is actually thing that harms the player. It’s kinda like a “I’m not stuck in here with you, You’re stuck in here with me” scenario.
try pouring some baking soda on it. it worked for me, after a few minutes the screeching stopped and it never did it again. sometimes theres a gurgling noise but thats pretty much the worst of it as of now.
My god, this reminded me of when I was a kid, I'd always cry for my big brother to come turn on the ps2 because I was absolutely terrified of the red screen it did when it couldn't read a card, and was always paranoid because it usually didn't read the disc at first because it was kind of run down. When I did try it on my own, like if my brother was away, I'd always have like 10 of my stuffed animals, my huge blanket and my pillows, and would hide when it turned on Then I played Crash Nitro Kart and it was all cool
all i ever did was ask my dad what was wrong with it since i was just genuinely confused, and it’s actually pretty difficult to get the console to work with our current setup.
I am so glad that I'm not the only one who found the gamecube scary! As a kid I always hated whenever a disk wouldn't load and it went into the menu! The sound it made, the animation of the cube spinning, the ambient music, the pitch black background... it was the combination of all those things that freaked me out!
The "creepy" Sonic screen wasn't supposed to be as creepy. In the Japanese version it play different music which is a lot more goofy sounding. Obviously the picture is still uneasing but a different tune does wonders for atmosphere.

I think what makes these screens so creepy is that they hit a sort of Uncanney Valley of sound. A lot of the noises feel vaguely like things we’re familiar with, like human voices or animal noises or music, except corrupted or distorted that makes it sound worse than it is. Paired with a usually dark background and ambience, it feels a lot creepier. As for the ones that aren’t sounds and are just voices, I think what made it creepy as children is that the voices sound authoritative, like an angry parent, except it’s coming from your device.
2:32 When I was 5 I remember every time I turned on my ps2 I would run to the other room until the startup was finished cause I thought the roaring would kill me.
the beginning of this video just made me miss old console start ups. They had class, they had finesse they had some presentation to them. From the next gen on (PS3 and Xbox 360) it always felt cold, direct, immediate. That little extra bit of "hey yeah, this is a video game console and is therefore neat" was gone. I'll always miss the PS1's intro

The red blur, the sinking chimes and tunes, the ambiance... I don't know how it's possible, but somehow that shit is nightmare fuel. I'm now a 27 year old man and I still feel really uneasy everytime I see it. Not even Personified Fear scared me like that, and I do know I had it a few times on my PS1 too. Probably because Personified Fear had no visuals ?
The dead silence of ps3 sometimes unnerved me as a kid, just the feeling that I wasn’t supposed to linger here, that it wasn’t built to be stayed on got to me. Almost like I’d trifled with something I shouldn’t have. There were games that I wasn’t supposed to play, y’know, my parent’s games, so it sorta felt like wandering would be foolish. But maybe it’s just my autism speaking🤗
Sometimes when I see the gamecube start up thing just gives me a huge wave of nostalgia, I remember when I'd play my gamecube games on a blue disney tv and I'd sit on the floor in a nest of pillows and blankets with my mom on the couch next to me. I miss those times (and I want a gamecube again)
Everyone gangster until their Xbox starts talking to them in NASA. No, seriously, it was so exceedingly creepy as a kid that I would actively race to stick disks in that console if the room was dark.
It just sounds and looks cool. I can see why some people get creeped out, but I love that little sound so much. Idk why but it gives me Silent Hill vibes. The red screen sucks though f that
I recommend stopping the background music for moments when have to listen to sounds or video. Very good video man. Love watching these videos at 2 am 👌👌
I actually have a GameCube, the only time it legitimately scared me was when I was younger, my parents turned the sound up all of the way so they could hear when I got up at night to play the console and then making me get in trouble lol
The Game Boy Player error noise always freaked me out as a kid. I don't know anyone who's ever been scared by the bios- you're the first person who I've ever seen who got scared by the main menu. I always found it serene.
Whenever the GameCube had a disk error I was HORRIFIED of it as a kid, and I still don't know why lol Even in your video I jumped a bit when it started rotating
The Sonic CD one was supposed to be funny actually, the mood really changes when you hear the Japanese version, which has a different OST and the song played in that moment was like reeeally funky.
Was like "I'll watch this one since I somehow missed it," and I REALLY wish I didn't watch this one at night. Literally reminds me of my childhood paranoia.
Xbox is the creepiest of that generations startup, Dreamcast, if you wanna count it as that generation, is the most peaceful, and if you don't then it's PS2 P.S. aw YEAHHHHH SOTN BABY
when i was a kid i used to sit on the basement stairs and hide, watching my brother play xbox. i remember being really scared by the startup sequence, and some of the other sounds it made. one time, i think it was my sister who turned it on while we were both down there, and seeing it up close didn't help.
that game cube opening also scared me. I literally jumped and turned the console off first time I heard it, to this day whenever the startup screen takes longer than usual to start up I hurry to turn the console off out of habbit.
I really love these kill screen/ weird bootup videos. Even as a kid I always thought that the only way you could make something scary was disturbing audio or just super fuckin amazing sound engineering, Still I think that the easiest way to scare someone is with good creepy audio and I never thought other people acknowledged that or thought of it as interesting but now I do so thank u for talking abt my favorite part of internet horror !
More on the subject of game CDs having messages telling you not to play them in a CD player, Puyo Puyo CD (for the TurboGrafx-CD) actually has a unique Japanese message from the main character warning you not to play it. It starts out calm enough, but if you continue to listen, towards the end she'll start to get more urgent, a siren plays, and the track ends with an explosion sound effect. Pretty weird, huh? I heard about it on TCRF, so you can go there if you want a transcript of the message.
The funniest thing about the sonic one is that in the Japanese version, it's supposed to be fun and silly, but since the US version uses a different soundtrack, it completley changes the tone of the image

It just sounds and looks cool. I can see why some people get creeped out, but I love that little sound so much. Idk why but it gives me Silent Hill vibes. The red screen sucks though f that
I love the PS2 startup screen, it's like "WOOOOOOOSH, you have now entered the video game realm"
I wonder if Goose will review a good or crappy horror movie that be cool or do a video about tv shows or movies that scared him
I recommend stopping the background music for moments when have to listen to sounds or video.
Very good video man. Love watching these videos at 2 am 👌👌
I actually have a GameCube, the only time it legitimately scared me was when I was younger, my parents turned the sound up all of the way so they could hear when I got up at night to play the console and then making me get in trouble lol
Lol even when I'm home alone I always turn on the TV and check the volume first before starting up a console or my BD player
I love the PS2 startup, it’s like part of a classical melody.
DAMN IM EARLY AF, LOVE THIS
The Game Boy Player error noise always freaked me out as a kid. I don't know anyone who's ever been scared by the bios- you're the first person who I've ever seen who got scared by the main menu. I always found it serene.
Whenever the GameCube had a disk error I was HORRIFIED of it as a kid, and I still don't know why lol
Even in your video I jumped a bit when it started rotating
2:58 "NOW ALL OF CHINA KNOWS YOU'RE HERE"
The Sonic CD one was supposed to be funny actually, the mood really changes when you hear the Japanese version, which has a different OST and the song played in that moment was like reeeally funky.
Was like "I'll watch this one since I somehow missed it," and I REALLY wish I didn't watch this one at night.
Literally reminds me of my childhood paranoia.
Xbox is the creepiest of that generations startup, Dreamcast, if you wanna count it as that generation, is the most peaceful, and if you don't then it's PS2
P.S. aw YEAHHHHH SOTN BABY
Finally :)
Lady: please eject this CD
Some dude in the background with a guitar: THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLAMES WE CARRY ON
Daaaaamn xdd i'm so early-
those noises off the xbox when you leave it on are the scariest shit ever when it's late at night and pitch dark
the creepy gamecube post-start up sound always made my stomach churn and made me hesitant to even play a game after hearing it 😭
Castlevania: Do not play this cd on foreign device or else
Also Castlevania: (plays straight fire when you play cd on foreign device )

when i was a kid i used to sit on the basement stairs and hide, watching my brother play xbox. i remember being really scared by the startup sequence, and some of the other sounds it made. one time, i think it was my sister who turned it on while we were both down there, and seeing it up close didn't help.
The wii's disc used to make my run to my mum when I was 5. The fact that it was just a black screen with no sound and white text was eerie to me
I didn't expect to see Skies of Arcadia on this series but now I'm crying because of how much I love that game.
the guitar riffs are actually the sound system trying to translate it into sound
I'm glad you're cultured enough to add in State if Emergency gameplay in this. Used to be addicted to that game as a kid.
I’m gonna be so sad when this traumathon is over, i look forward to these videos every day lol
Thanks
Im probably not gonna be able to sleep now
I’m enjoying this series, glad I found you!!
This is why I have a sceptical fear of technology mainly at night. If I get an error at night I'm hiding under the covers.
0:37 have you ever noticed how the boot up screen for Xbox series x is shitty but the old Xbox still has the best boot up screen
When I played the classic Xbox, those noises creeped me out as a kid
“This disk has computer data so don’t play it. You probably won’t listen to me, will you?”
**Sick disco music plays**
During the parts with the "Please Remove This Disk" I kept getting cold chills each time that woman talked.
3:07, that error screen had terrified me as a child just as much as the book covers of the Ghost Dog from Goosebumps and the Mewtwo Strikes Back book.
that game cube opening also scared me.
