I've now watched all your videos and I have to say I'm incredibly appreciative of them. I know that you want to be a teacher in the future and mainly teach from own experience and I'm not sure if you've thought about it or not but personally I feel like this channel is a way for you to do that even though it's not the same thing, exactly. I feel like you're my life teacher in a sense because of how important knowing how your mind operates really is in order to get the most out of life. You mostly, along with a few other youtubers, have given me a sense of belonging I've never felt before, ever, and I can't even begin to express how much that means to me.
As far as wanting to teach from own experience goes I feel like you speak mostly if not fully from your own experience when sharing your insights with us regarding MBTI and enneagram etc, this video is a perfect example. Criteria = met.
Side note on this vid: I can really relate to wanting people to just be more educated on MBTI and understanding the concept better because that would ultimately mean they'd understand us better once we reveal we're INFJ. And 5:39 SO true.
Of course through this type of teaching you don't get to see all the reactions of the people you reach but I'm sure you've noticed by now almost every comment on here is positive and appreciative and also the view-to-comment ratio is huge, a lot bigger than what I tend to see on other channels which means that the content you actually do provide is extremely helpful and invigorating to the people watching it.
I also think that this is something that's healthy for you in many other aspects too, not only seeing the positive responses confirming and assuring you of how you've really inspired and lifted people up but also having this channel act as a platform where you too can feel at home and feel this sense of belonging just like us, as well as a place you can go to escape from every day life and experience a kind of mental stimuli many other activities wouldn't allow you.
I would love it if you could get back to me discussing some of these wild ideas and letting me know in which areas I'm correct, close, clueless etc.
Damn, this turned into a long ass message. Anyway, I guess what I wanted to convey and make sure you understand is YOU have given me more value than any other teacher has, in school or otherwise. I think you're absolutely amazing! Never ever sell yourself short in that regard.
    P.S MAKE MOAR VIDEOS :DD

you really got my interest with your video`s, How you stare at nothing and then stop talking for a second to find the right words.
and the exact same hand gesture`s, pff i see so much in you itttsss justtt insaaneee ive never had this
every video you make relate`s to specific problems in my life, i cannot express how much you look like me !! it is insane.
i have problems understanding dutch language and those label problems you talked about, for me your way of speaking is like listening to my own thoughts. i understand everything you say because allot of these things are in my journey to, but this is just a beginning. !!!!!
ive been wondering around the internet to look up all the personality test`s, i am doing this for 3 years now but these words make it very hard for me to understand it.
i have never learned how to form a sentence on my high school because i had the opportunity to steal the awnsers.
i have a real crazy way of using language i do not use rule`s to form my sentence, so when i message my friends on my cellphone, they get the wrong message from me because they follow a pattern in their language which i do not have and which i never fully understood why people do it that way.
Thank you so much for doing this i really needed this, i saw similarity`s in the words of what describe`d an INFJ but never understood them 100%.
for me this is a very rare moment which i did not expect to happen very soon.
this means so much for me !!! really really thanks !!!
you can explain me something in an instant, while other people will only be the cause of more question marks in my eye`s.
your complexity is my simplicity, haha
    sounds weird
pff i am to enthusiastic aigan my mind is going overload, hahaha
( sorry that my grammar is not very well i hope you understand what i say ! )

HELL TO THE F’n YEAH ! My most sincere kudos for taking time and effort needed to reflect and vocalize the results of your reflection in a structured and logical manner. The fact that this was inherently personal while wholly contrite was not lost on me and is also appreciated. It is immediately apparent that you were/are approaching this in good faith , in the spirit of always being in the pursuit of learning and always being open to the betterment of oneself when possible.....
You said it all better than I could... And just think of the wasted time, wasted effort, energy, lost productivity, and the immense trade off costs associated with the labeling obsession!

As a general comment: your videos are having an impact. I'm a fellow INFJ, also recently out of university, and also in a phase of self-reflection. Just knowing that there are others like you out there is comforting. As you say, that's one of the strong appeals of MBTI.
Just so you know, I think you do a great job of articulating your thoughts. You've definitely made me consider things from another angle. Thanks for putting these up!

Thank you for addressing the drawbacks of personality labels. Personally, I always wanted to be known as and judged for being me, Billie, and not as an INFJ, Bipolar, female, childhood abuse survivor, Ect.... I feel I am the sum of all these things and not just any one part of me.

I wonder if being an INFJ is synonymous to being bipolar? I feel like I am bipolar and wish I was more consistent in my mood and behaviour as the instability drives me crazy.
I am also a childhood abuse survivor, I wonder how much our childhood experiences shape our mbti type?

That's why as an INFJ, it's feels almost crucial to me to watch INFJ videos because it helps me connect with people I feel and believe will immediately understand me. I feel in a way my being has found a safe place in an otherwise pretty unfriendly world.

sometimes i feel like a kaleidoscope and i unravel different parts of myself when i see through "objects" (people) and the characteristics they possess.. though at times i struggle to really connect with what i really feel is me, or who i really am. it's a bit unsettling for me to be so in-tune with how other people feel based on their moral codes and values, yet in turn i have no idea how to define myself. for example, I would not say that I am a vegan even when I am one and talking to someone I know is a vegan and takes it as a very large part of their identity, simply because i want for there to be a lot more room for other myriads of who i am.. it's like i want to connect, but not just based on boxes us humans put ourselves in. Joyce Carol Oates said something that I really relate to; “I feel very transparent in myself. I’m more of an observer. I’m interested in what’s going on. I’m not sure that I really have a personality. Some people think I do have a personality. I have a personality when I am with certain people - but when I’m not with them I don’t have that personality. I just sort of go back to resembling a transparent glass of water.”

I can relate to what you're saying, as I don't know anyone else in my circle that knows anything about MBTI. So I find that I get excited about personality types and functions and what not and I have no one to relate to about it. So true! A lot of personalities could care less about MBTI labels. My ESTP dad (I think estp - he doesn't have time for boring mbti tests! lol) and ISTJ brother could care less about MBTI. They both define who they are by what their jobs, and how manly they are - material/physical things. On the other hand, my INFP sister and I (INFJ) sit and analyze everyone according to MBTI, Enneagram, birth order, or whatever. My INTJ brother does too. I want to know what makes people "tick". What do you do when people judge you by your job, education, or whatever instead of who you really are? Do you accept their perception of you and roll with it? Or do you try to redefine yourself? I'm often am afraid to tell certain people what I do for a living, because I'll classified as an idiot (i work a gritty blue collar job) before they get to know me. But at the same time, it is what I do, and if that's the framework they think of me in, so be it.
Also, great vids! You're very articulate and informative.

I have a weird relationship with empathy, I seem hyper aware of making people uncomfortable but I don't always know why I am having that affect - it wasn't apparent to me that people have a label for themselves which is how they want to be seen and me saying "Oh, I think you are XYZ" isn't going to feel like it's them, so thankyou.

HI! (staunch INFP here). You mentioned in a previous video (INXJs: Surrendering to Se), "acceptance is more powerful than succumbing to the wants of your Ni." As far as how this relates to labels, why should you seek definition of yourself if ultimately others will place their own on you? You will find out how to relate to others intuitively by accepting yourself as you feel to be but not by labels (assuming you haven't already). An ESTP can be into MBTI and not get you regardless of labels. Be true to yourself and people/things will fall into place. Perhaps this is easy for an INFP to say with all of our "value systems" and "moral compasses" and what not, but perhaps there is an INFJ version of this. Venture out and discover it!.. emotionally speaking.

Sometimes I wish people came with their personality type written on a name-tag they wear all the time. It would make life a lot easier for me. Everyone seems to be a part of some 'group' nowadays. When someone says they are vegan, it could mean so many things. They might be a PETA member who really cares about animal rights, or it could mean their favorite celebrity told them to do so and they're just following the trend. So at the end of the day it's hard for me to really 'get in tune' with anybody based off what social group(s) they say they belong to. So I'm always asking stuff like "So what made you get into that?"
It's weird cause I've adapted to how everyone does labeling. I just introduce myself like everyone else "Hey I'm Brian, I like pizza, libertarian ideals, and surfing". If I said I was an INFJ people would look over all confused... "A what?" Haha maybe someday! Congrats on 800

Have you heard about Dario Nardi's work? He's found that personality is actually visible in the brain. For example he can scan a INFJ and a INTJ without knowing beforehand what types they are and he can know based on brain scans. Just curious.

I feel like there's something wrong with me. I am the most easy going person I've ever met. I'm fine with too much. I don't mind being called names or labels. I'm also an INFJ as it happens. I've heard a couple of people who don't like to have a label placed on them. I also am torn when it comes to God and others. I'm kind of double sided. I want to help people know God, but I know that many will either ignore me or outright fight me. I sometimes take things too personally, and other times, I'm completely insensitive. I'm basically a walking contradiction. I also have no confidence in my own God-given abilities. I don't know. I have problems. Sorry for the rant. I had to tell someone.

Ruby Ruby Yeah. It's kind of weird. Whenever I write a comment on a video, I always have to rewrite it several times to make it concise because I will think about how the person will read it and try to think how'd they respond. It does makes us very well-rounded in terms of making decisions, when we can decide to make one. (; It helps us to see multiple angles to a situation.
Don't worry about it. It gets better with time. You'll learn to mellow out, hopefully. God has helped to keep me sane. It's really because of God's influence in my life that I am as positive as I am. It'll be alright in the end, trust me. :)
Thanks for responding and reading this comment, and I hope you have a great rest of the day. :)

It sucks that almost no one knows about mbti! I wish that it was way more mainstream and that people knew some of the lingo or at least knew what their type was along with some basics. I also sometimes wish that ppl would walk around with name tags with their types displayed on it lol, would make it easier to understand why certain ppl act in certain ways, but one day I aspire to be able to type people quickly enough to make their name tags for them shortly after meeting them! ^_^

Great video! Question: do you think it's possible to have a healthy sense of identity without labels of any kind?

    • @solohouette494
      @solohouette494  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hmm. This is a tough question to answer. I've spent a lot of time dissociating myself with labels because I felt like they kept me from connecting with certain individuals. But when I did that, people would either 1) label me anyway or 2) behave in ways that I found inappropriate (like making racist comments). So I think there's a benefit to identifying with certain labels to set boundaries with people.
I've realized that I care more for personality labels because I want to understand people deeply and I want them to do the same for me. Perhaps it's ignorant of me to assume that personality labels can make you more open-minded to understanding why some people identify with the labels that they do.
I hope that answers your question. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts as well!

    • @thecurtismorgan
      @thecurtismorgan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It does answer my question. I agree that sometimes it's necessary to play along with the labels that others put on us. Labels do create healthy boundaries, and I think that sometimes the best way to overcome unhealthy labels is by by allowing them for a time. As a fellow INFJ type 4, I also enjoy some labels and find some of them usefully descriptive.
On the other hand, I have found in my own personal, subjective experience an incredible amount of freedom by recognizing that on the level of "being" or existence, I absolutely cannot be defined by any label whatsoever. Subjectively, only words like "being" and "life" can come close to describing what I experience myself to be. So in a nutshell, that's my take on labels. Thanks for the response!

What a great question!! How would you describe yourself to someone that doesn't know you then? I have had trouble all my life feeling like I don't fit in with a " crowd ", because I have such varied interests- but I always feel authentic to myself. (Infj). People have a complete stereotype waiting for you before you even open your mouth, and God help you if you prove them wrong!!!

Though I'm an INFJ and because of that I'm said to be very emotional and connected with others, but that isn't really the case. I think that if I were a healthy INFJ (in mind) then I might be. I am super awkward and often can't stand talking to people. I don't like to always be alone, but I'm fine with it I'd need be. I'm a walking contradiction, basically.

  • @hejdingamleraev
    @hejdingamleraev 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You say that by knowing someones type you can learn more about a person. I do not fully agree with that. The philosopher Martin Buber has written (anyone who's interested in people and relating should read his work "I and thou") that there are different ways of relating to each other. What I take away from it is that you can either relate to another person as an It, meaning that what you perceive is their labels and your theories about them (fe stereotypes) or you can relate to another person as a Thou meaning that what you perceive is their presence and hopefully their true intentions, in other words not so much your preconceived ideas about who they are.
There is also something in the field of psychology known as Confirmation bias, which basically means that you will rather ignore proof against your theories than change your mind. The implications this has on the I and thou idea is that once you form and apply a theory about a person that will likely be what you will see that person as, even if that persons behavior is expressing something else. You will then no longer allow that other person to be who they are in your eyes, only what you think that person is. Therefor I believe that there is a point in not putting too much emphasis on labels, such as types, as we still are unique individuals even if we prefer the same functions. It is easy to be caught in stereotypes and people prefer to be seen as who they are, not what you think they are. I think there is a place for types and labels I just think that it is important to remember that even if we fit into their descriptions we can not be entirely defined by them as they are generalisations.
I'm pretty sure you were heading in the same direction for a while when you said that people don't like to be labeled and prefer to chose their own labels, except I don't think people want to be labeled at all and that getting to know someone means moving away from the labels we put on people we don't know.
