Financial Literacy: Mellody Hobson at TEDxMidwest

  • Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, delivers an energetic, thought provoking "Talk" that inspires the audience to determine their own financial destiny. Coming from a not so stable home environment, Hobson's ascension in the academic and business worlds offers a clear example of what's possible when one decides to want more for themselves in life.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

She is absolutely right and my friends and I have been talking about this forever. We need unnecessary subjects like woodshop, physics, trigonometry, etc. to be taken out of the curriculum and instead be replaced by REAL financial literacy classes. Let's face it, when are we ever going to use radicals and slopes in real time?
TEACH ME HOW TO BALANCE A CHECK BOOK. TEACH ME HOW TO START SAVING FOR COLLEGE, A HOUSE, A CAR. TEACH ME HOW TO MANAGE A BANK ACCOUNT AND HOW MONEY WORKS. TEACH ME THINGS I CAN ACTUALLY USE IN REAL LIFE.

I love listening to this....I always seem to be chasing the dollar....working over time or 2 jobs to make ends meet... as single woman in my 40's....I would like to be able to be financially secure (well off) so that I can maybe take a breath and starting enjoying my life, instead of treading water......the part about "what if no one is coming" resonated with me, I had that very thought in the summer of 2000 at my brothers wedding, I was a brides maid....and I remember thinking that very thing...."what if nobody is coming? what are you going to do girly?"....and the answer for me was...save thy self)...if Mellody has written a book about finances, I am going to buy it...this has been helpful and really inspiring!

Amazing! Love her sincerity. Everybody male and female face the temptation of expecting a saviour but the sooner we realize that the only true saviour lies within, the better we take charge and attract the necessary resources to achieve our dreams. Financial Literacy is very important, let's propagate it more, especially among the young.

    Excellent speech.
She discussed the importance of financial education.
I cannot stress how important this subject is.
Sadly this important subject will never be taught in any school, university, or most homes.
We have to make the conscious decision to find this information ourselves.
The book Rich Dad, Poor Dad will point you in the right direction.
    Thanks for the video.

    2. I'm a student and thank fuck I've finished. Im glad I've started my job after graduation (didn't use my degree) to earn money.
    3. The issues...: what she learned. The girl always gets rescued. Guys who are entrepreneurs have to think this way as well. We all try live on our own accord to get where we think we want to. "any thing is possible" so don't let people get in the way. (I'm not disagreeing with what this woman is saying).
